Abstract:We demonstrate specular photonic "lattices" with random index variations at disordered positions of lattice sites. These amorphous lattice structures, optically induced in a bulk nonlinear crystal, remain invariant during propagation since they are constructed from random components residing on a fixed ring in momentum space. We observe linear spatial localization of a light beam when probing through different "defect" points in such specular lattices, as well as the nonlinear destruction of localized modes. In addition, we illustrate the possibility of image transmission through the disordered lattices, when a self-defocusing nonlinearity is employed.

Abstract: The past decade has witnessed the emergence of abundant topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, such as topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) [1, 2]. Recent discoveries of higher-order [3-6] and fragile [7-10] TCIs illustrate that gapless edge states may not be a universal feature of TCIs, and therefore request alternative experimental signatures. Here, we demonstrate that disclinations, i.e., rotational topological defects in crystals, can serve as a novel probe of TCIs without invoking edge boundaries. Using photonic crystals, i.e., artificial periodic structures giving access to versatile manipulations of light [11], we observe topologically-protected photonic modes localized at disclinations in photonic TCIs. We create physical realizations of photonic TCIs and disclinations using macroscopic dielectric structures based on hexagonal lattices. By driving the photonic system across a topological transition via tuning the unit-cell geometry, we find that the topological disclination modes disappear in the trivial phase. The experimental discovery of the bulk-disclination correspondence unveils a new horizon in topological physics, while its photonic realization provides a pathway toward topological photonics [12-22] beyond the bulk-edge correspondence.

Abstract:Periodic structures structured as photonic crystals and optical lattices are fascinating for nonlinear waves engineering in the optics and ultracold atoms communities. Moiré photonic and optical lattices — two-dimensional twisted patterns lie somewhere in between perfect periodic structures and aperiodic ones — are a new emerging investigative tool for studying nonlinear localized waves of diverse types. Herein, a theory of two-dimensional spatial localization in nonlinear periodic systems with fractional-order diffraction (linear nonlocality) and moiré optical lattices is investigated. Specifically, the flat-band feature is well preserved in shallow moiré optical lattices which, interact with the defocusing nonlinearity of the media, can support fundamental gap solitons, bound states composed of several fundamental solitons, and topological states (gap vortices) with vortex charge s = 1 and 2, all populated inside the finite gaps of the linear Bloch-wave spectrum. Employing the linear-stability analysis and direct perturbed simulations, the stability and instability properties of all the localized gap modes are surveyed, highlighting a wide stability region within the first gap and a limited one (to the central part) for the third gap. The findings enable insightful studies of highly localized gap modes in linear nonlocality (fractional) physical systems with shallow moiré patterns that exhibit extremely flat bands.

Two-dimensional defect modes in optically induced photonic lattices

Abstract:In this article, localized linear defect modes due to band gap guidance in two-dimensional photonic lattices with localized or nonlocalized defects are investigated theoretically. First, when the defect is localized and weak, eigenvalues of defect modes bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands are derived analytically. It is shown that in an attractive (repulsive) defect, defect modes bifurcate out from Bloch-band edges with normal (anomalous) diffraction coefficients. Furthermore, distances between defect-mode eigenvalues and Bloch-band edges decrease exponentially with the defect strength, which is very different from the one-dimensional case where such distances decrease quadratically with the defect strength. It is also found that some defect-mode branches bifurcate not from Bloch-band edges, but from quasiedge points within Bloch bands, which is very unusual. Second, when the defect is localized but strong, defect modes are determined numerically. It is shown that both the repulsive and attractive defects can support various types of defect modes such as fundamental, dipole, quadrupole, and vortex modes. These modes reside in various band gaps of the photonic lattice. As the defect strength increases, defect modes move from lower band gaps to higher ones when the defect is repulsive, but remain within each band gap when the defect is attractive, similar to the one-dimensional case. The same phenomena are observed when the defect is held fixed while the applied dc field (which controls the lattice potential) increases. Lastly, if the defect is nonlocalized (i.e., it persists at large distances in the lattice), it is shown that defect modes can be embedded inside the continuous spectrum, and they can bifurcate out from edges of the continuous spectrum algebraically rather than exponentially.

Abstract:Synthetic photonic lattices provide unique capabilities to realize theoretical concepts emerging in different fields of wave physics via the utilization of powerful photonic technologies. Here we observe experimentally Anderson localization for optical pulses in time domain, using a photonic mesh lattice composed of coupled fiber loops. We introduce a random potential through programmed electro-optic pulse phase modulation, and identify the localization features associated with varying degree of disorder. Furthermore, we present a practical approach to control the band-gap width in photonic lattices by varying the coupling between the fiber loops, and reveal that the strongest degree of localization is limited and increases in lattices with wider band-gaps. Importantly, this opens a possibility to enhance or reduce the effect of disorder and associated localization of optical pulses.

Abstract:Introduction of controllable deformations into periodic materials that lead to disclinations in their structure opens novel routes for construction of higher-order topological insulators hosting topological states at disclinations. Appearance of these topological states is consistent with the bulk-disclination correspondence principle, and is due to the filling anomaly that results in fractional charges to the boundary unit cells. So far, topological disclination states were observed only in the linear regime, while the interplay between nonlinearity and topology in the systems with disclinations has been never studied experimentally. We report here bon the experimental observation of the nonlinear photonic disclination states in waveguide arrays with pentagonal or heptagonal disclination cores inscribed in transparent optical medium using the fs-laser writing technique. The transition between nontopological and topological phases in such structures is controlled by the Kekulé distortion coefficient $r$ with topological phase hosting simultaneously disclination states at the inner disclination core and spatially separated from them corner, zero-energy, and extended edge states at the outer edge of the structure. We show that the robust nonlinear disclination states bifurcate from their linear counterparts and that location of their propagation constants in the gap and, hence, their spatial localization can be controlled by their power. Nonlinear disclination states can be efficiently excited by Gaussian input beams, but only if they are focused into the waveguides belonging to the disclination core, where such topological states reside.

Abstract:Unintentional but unavoidable fabrication imperfections in state-of-the-art photonic-crystal waveguides lead to the spontaneous formation of Anderson-localized modes thereby limiting slow-light propagation and its potential applications. On the other hand, disorder-induced cavities offer an approach to cavity-quantum electrodynamics and random lasing at the nanoscale. The key statistical parameter governing the disorder effects is the localization length, which together with the waveguide length determines the statistical transport of light through the waveguide. In a disordered photonic-crystal waveguide, the localization length is highly dispersive, and therefore, by controlling the underlying lattice parameters, it is possible to tune the localization of the mode. In the present work, we study the localization length in a disordered photonic-crystal waveguide using numerical simulations. We demonstrate two different localization regimes in the dispersion diagram where the localization length is linked to the density of states and the photon effective mass, respectively. The two different localization regimes are identified in experiments by recording the photoluminescence from quantum dots embedded in photonic-crystal waveguides.

Abstract:In sufficiently strong scattering media, light transport is suppressed and modes are exponentially localized. Anderson-like localized states have long been recognized as potential candidate for high-Q optical modes for low-threshold, cost effective random lasers. Operating in this regime remains however a challenge since Anderson localization is difficult to achieve in optics and nonlinear mode interaction compromise its observation. Here, we exhibit individually each lasing mode of a low-dimension solid-state random laser by applying a non-uniform optical gain. By undoing gain competition and cross-saturation, we demonstrate that all lasing modes are spatially localized. We find that selective excitation reduces significantly the lasing threshold while lasing efficiency is greatly improved. We show further how their spatial location is critical to boost laser power-efficiency. By efficiently suppressing spatial hole burning effect, we can turn on the optimally-outcoupled random lasing modes. Our demonstration opens the road to the exploration of linear and nonlinear mode interactions in the presence of gain, as well as disorder-engineering for laser applications.

Observation of higher-order time-dislocation topological modes

Abstract:Topological dislocation modes resulting from the interplay between spatial dislocations and momentum-space topology have recently attracted significant interest. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate time-dislocation topological modes which are induced by the interplay between temporal dislocations and Floquet-band topology. By utilizing an extra physical dimension to represent the frequency-space lattice, we implement a two-dimensional Floquet higher-order topological phase and observe time-dislocation induced $\pi$-mode topological corner modes in a three-dimensional circuit metamaterial. Intriguingly, the realized time-dislocation topological modes exhibit spatial localization at the temporal dislocation, despite homogeneous in-plane lattice couplings across it. Our study opens a new avenue to explore the topological phenomena enabled by the interplay between real-space, time-space and momentum-space topology.

Rather than using the spatial dimension to mimic time, here we design and implement an acoustic temporal lattice with time-varying couplings to demonstrate a unique type of strongly localized Floquet pi modes that are gauge independent and can be robustly excited at the frequency in the nontrivial band gap. We observe the topological phase transitions by changing modulation frequency, consistent with the calculated quasienergy spectra. Our work paves the way for investigating intrinsic characteristics of various temporal systems and may inspire other intriguing discoveries in topological systems, such as higher-order temporal Floquet topological insulators.
Observation of reentrant metal-insulator transition in a random-dimer disordered SSH lattice

Abstract:The interrelationship between localization, quantum transport, and disorder has remained a fascinating focus in scientific research. Traditionally, it has been widely accepted in the physics community that in one-dimensional systems, as disorder increases, localization intensifies, triggering a metal-insulator transition. However, a recent theoretical investigation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 106803] has revealed that the interplay between dimerization and disorder leads to a reentrant localization transition, constituting a remarkable theoretical advancement in the field. Here, we present the experimental observation of reentrant localization using an experimentally friendly model, a photonic SSH lattice with random-dimer disorder, achieved by incrementally adjusting synthetic potentials. In the presence of correlated on-site potentials, certain eigenstates exhibit extended behavior following the localization transition as the disorder continues to increase. We directly probe the wave function in disordered lattices by exciting specific lattice sites and recording the light distribution. This reentrant phenomenon is further verified by observing an anomalous peak in the normalized participation ratio. Our study enriches the understanding of transport in disordered mediums and accentuates the substantial potential of integrated photonics for the simulation of intricate condensed matter physics phenomena.

Abstract:A set of localized basis orbitals are presented to locally represent electromagnetic field in photonic crystals. These orbitals are different from the optical Wannier functions. They are the optical parallelism of quasiatomic orbitals in the context of electronic problems. We demonstrate the utility of these localized optical orbitals by recapturing eigenmodes in defected structures. Calculations for cavity modes and dispersion relations of waveguides agree well with the results from plane-wave expansion calculations. This approach also offers interesting physical insight to understand the state of light in ideal photonic crystals as well as defected structures.

Localization-delocalization Transition in an electromagnetically induced photonic lattice

Abstract:We investigate the localization-delocalization transition (LDT) in an electromagnetically induced photonic lattice. A four-level tripod-type scheme in atomic ensembles is proposed to generate an effective photonic moiré lattice through the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism. By taking advantage of the tunable atomic coherence, we show that both periodic (commensurable) and aperiodic (incommensurable) structure can be created in such a photonic moiré lattice via adjusting the twist angle between two superimposed periodic patterns with square primitive. Furthermore, we also find that by tuning the amplitudes of these two superimposed periodic patterns, the localization-delocalization transition occurs for the light propagating in the aperiodic moiré lattice. Such localization is shown to link the fact that the flat bands of moiré lattice support quasi-nondiffracting localized modes and thus induce the localization of the initially localized beam. It would provide a promising approach to control the light propagation via the electromagnetically induced photonic lattice.

Abstract:We prove Anderson localization in a disordered photonic crystal waveguide by measuring the ensemble-averaged localization length which is controlled by the dispersion of the photonic crystal waveguide. In such structures, the localization length shows a 10-fold variation between the fast- and the slow-light regime and, in the latter case, it becomes shorter than the sample length thus giving rise to strongly confined modes. The dispersive behavior of the localization length demonstrates the close relation between Anderson localization and the photon density of states in disordered photonic crystals, which opens a promising route to controlling and exploiting Anderson localization for efficient light confinement.

Abstract:Emergent collective modes in lattices give birth to many intriguing physical phenomena in condensed matter physics. Among these collective modes, large-area modes typically feature small-level spacings, while a mode with stable frequency tends to be spatially tightly confined. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a spectral-isolated photonic topological corner mode with a tunable mode area and stable frequency in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. This mode emerges from hybridizing the large-area homogeneous mode and in-gap topological corner modes. Remarkably, this large-area homogeneous mode possesses unique chirality and has a tunable mode area under the change of the mass term of the inner topological non-trivial lattice. We experimentally observe such topological large-area corner modes(TLCM) in a 2D photonic system and demonstrate the robustness by introducing disorders in the structure. Our findings have propelled the forefront of higher-order topology research, transitioning it from single-lattice systems to multi-lattice systems. They may support promising potential applications, particularly in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

Abstract:We investigate the localization and delocalization transition in a synthetic mesh lattice (SML) with the hybrid modulations comprising of a gradient phase and phase disorders that are utilized to induce Bloch oscillation and Anderson localization, respectively. On the basis of Bloch oscillation, phase and coupling disorders are introduced in the SML by randomly altering the longitudinal phase and transverse coupling. The results shows that the phase disorder generally washes out the Bloch oscillation with the enlarging randomness. Whereas, the coupling disorder results in increasing number of oscillations initially and causes strong localization with a large random value. When two kinds of disorders are simultaneously added, the optical transition between localization and delocalization are realized by modulating the two strengths of disorders. Our work reveals the interaction of Bloch oscillation and disorders in two discrete systems, which provide a method to achieve optical localization.

Abstract:The discovery of the quantised Hall effect, and its subsequent topological explanation, demonstrated the important role topology can play in determining the properties of quantum systems. This realisation led to the development of topological band theory, where, in addition to band index and quasimomentum, Bloch bands are also characterised by a set of topological invariants. This topological theory can be readily extended to periodically-driven systems. In the limit of fast driving, the topology of the system can still be captured by the topological invariants used to describe static systems. In the limit of slow driving, however, situations can arise where standard topological invariants are zero, but yet, topologically protected edge modes are still observed. These "anomalous" topological edge modes have no static analogue, and are associated with a distinct topological invariant, which takes into account the full time-evolution over a driving period. Here we demonstrate the first experimental observation of such anomalous topological edge modes in an ultrafast-laser-inscribed photonic lattice. This inscription technique allows one to address each bond of a lattice independently and dynamically, generating a rich band structure with robust anomalous chiral edge modes and the potential for perfectly localised bulk states.

Abstract:Photonic lattices have emerged as an ideal testbed for localizing light in space. Among others, the most promising approach is based on flat band systems and their related nondiffracting compact localized states. So far, only compact localized states arising from a single flat band have been found. Such states typically appear static, thus not allowing adaptive or evolutionary features of light localization. Here, we report on the first experimental realization of an oscillating compact localized state arising from multiple flat bands. We observe an oscillatory intensity beating during propagation in a two-dimensional photonic decorated Lieb lattice. The photonic system is realized by direct femtosecond laser writing and hosts most importantly multiple flat bands at different eigenenergies in its band structure. Our results open new avenues for evolution dynamics in the up to now static phenomenon of light localization in periodic waveguide structures and extend the current understanding of light localization in flat band systems.
