Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal based on a directly modulated chirp-managed laser (CML), without requiring any differential encoder and optical phase modulator (PM). It shows better fiber chromatic dispersion tolerance and comparable nonlinearity tolerance, compared with a LiNbO PM-based RZ-DPSK signal using 2(31) - 1 pseudo-random bit sequence data.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:Directly modulated laser (DML) with direct detection (DD) dominates the commercial optical short reach applications. When upgrading the DML-DD to higher data rate, the frequency chirp is commonly regarded as a performance barrier. On the contrary, in this letter, we take advantage of the chirp to generate phase modulation along with the intensity, namely, realize complex modulation at transmitter using a single DML. Coherent detection (CD) is applied to recover this 2 dimensional (2-D) signal. A modified Viterbi algorithm (VA) conducts maximum likelihood decoding utilizing the signal intensity and differential phase in receiver digital signal processing (DSP). By making decision using 2-D information, VA provides more than 9-dB optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity advantage over the conventional DML-CD with intensity only decision, in a 10-GBaud pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 system. We demonstrate the first PAM-8 experiment over 160-km standard single mode fiber using the phase diversity DML.

Abstract:We proposed single-sideband (SSB) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) vector radio-frequency optical signal generation enabled by a single directly modulated laser without precoding technology, which can reduce the system cost and tolerate fiber dispersion. Based on our proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrated 8-Gbaud SSB QPSK signals generation at 10 GHz, and the generated signals are transmitted over 50-km single-mode fiber without power penalty. Our experimental results show that an equal power SSB signal can tolerate fiber dispersion and have the highest receiver sensitivity. 10Gb/s Direct Modulation of Widely Tunable V-Cavity-Laser with Chirp Managed Laser Technology

Abstract:We report direct modulation results in a simple and compact widely tunable V-cavity laser. Chirp managed laser technology has been successfully applied to the V-cavity laser with an optical spectrum reshaping filter. The tunable V-cavity-laser employs a half-wave coupler to obtain single-mode operation with high side-mode suppression ratio and the Vernier effect to extend its tuning range. It does not require any grating structure and regrowth steps. In this experiment, we achieved single-electrode controlled wavelength tuning of about 18 channels at 100GHz spacing with a fixed temperature, and 32 channels using 2 temperature settings. Well-open eye diagrams with extinction ratio above 4.3dB in all channels are observed when the laser is directly modulated at 2.5Gb/s. Although the measured small-signal frequency response is only about 5.7GHz, more than 6.7dB extinction ratio under 10Gb/s modulation rate is achieved by using the chirp managed laser technology with an optical spectrum reshaping filter placed after the output of the laser to convert the frequency chirp accompanying the direct modulation to amplitude modulation. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, easy wavelength control algorithm, and simple direct modulation offer great potential for the chirped managed V-cavity laser to be used in low-cost WDM links.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for high-frequency quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) photonic vector signal generation based on a single directly modulated laser (DML) employing photonic frequency quadrupling and balanced pre-coding technologies. In order to realize frequency quadrupling, a wavelength selective switch (WSS) is intruded in our experiment. The intruded WSS combined with DML can not only realize high-frequency vector signal generation but also simplify the architecture. We experimentally demonstrate 1-or 2-Gbaud QPSK vector signal generation at 88GHz based on our proposed scheme. The generated 1-Gbaud balanced pre-coded QPSK vector signal is transmitted 0.5-m wireless distance with the bit-error-ratio (BER) below hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3. To our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate W-band mm-wave vector signal based on a single DML with quadrupling frequency and pre-coding technologies.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:The generation of differential-phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals is demonstrated using a directly modulated passive feedback laser at 10.709-Gb/s, 14-Gb/s and 16-Gb/s. The quality of the DPSK signals is assessed using both noncoherent detection for a bit rate of 10.709-Gb/s and coherent detection with digital signal processing involving a look-up table pattern-dependent distortion compensator. Transmission over a passive link consisting of 100 km of single mode fiber at a bit rate of 10.709-Gb/s is achieved with a received optical power of -45 dBm at a bit-error-ratio of 3.8 × 10(-3) and a 49 dB loss margin.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:This letter proposes and experimentally demonstrates a simple scheme for generating 40-GBaud carrier-suppressed return-to-zero differential quadrature phase shift keying (CSRZ-DQPSK) modulation signals with tunable pulsewidths using two dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DPMZMs). The duty cycle of the generated 40-GHz CSRZ-DQPSK pulse train is continuously tuned from 31% to 62%, with the full-width at half-maximum tuned from 7.8 to 15.5 ps, by electrically tuning the delay between the two sine-clock signals in one of the DPMZMs. Error-free performance is achieved after 320-km transmission.

Abstract:An all-optical return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) signal regeneration scheme is experimentally demonstrated. Thanks to the gain saturation effect, common quantum-well semiconductor optical amplifiers have the ability to regenerate the amplitude distorted RZ-DQPSK signal, so amplitude noise can be reduced while phase information will not be distorted. A significant eye-opening improvement and a negative power penalty of about 1 dB can be achieved for an 80 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signal.

Abstract:This paper proposes a chirp-free optical return-to-zero (RZ) modulator using a double coupled microring resonator. Optical RZ modulation is achieved by applying a clock (CLK) driving signal to the input coupling region and a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) driving signal to the output coupling region. Static and time-domain coupled-mode theory (CMT) based dynamic analyse are performed to theoretically investigate its performance in RZ modulation. The criteria to realize RZ modulation are deduced. Various RZ modulation formats, including RZ phase-shift-keying (RZ-PSK), carrier-suppressed RZ (CSRZ), and RZ intensity modulation formats, can be implemented by using CLK and NRZ signals with different combinations of polarities. Numerical simulations are performed and the feasibility of our modulator at 10 Gbit/s for the multiple RZ modulation formats is verified.

Abstract:We review recent patents on a chirp managed transmitter comprised of a DML and the subsequent optical bandpass filter. Large dispersion tolerance of this transmitter is realized by chirp control through the phase correlation between adjacent bits for the destructive interference in order to erase the power of"0" bits and enhance the extinction ratio. The reach of this transmitter without dispersion compensation is superior to the best reported DML-based and duobinary transmitters. The results show that this is a promising solution to meet the size, power, capacity and cost requirements of the optical links simultaneously in the today and tomorrow's metro and access networks.
