Abstract:Graphene, whose absorbance is approximately independent of wavelength, allows broadband light–matter interactions with ultrafast responses. The interband optical absorption of graphene can be saturated readily under strong excitation, thereby enabling scientists to exploit the photonic properties of graphene to realize ultrafast lasers. The evanescent field interaction scheme of the propagating light with graphene covered on a D-shaped fibre or microfibre has been employed extensively because of the nonblocking configuration. Obviously, most of the fibre surface is unused in these techniques. Here, we exploit a graphene-clad microfibre (GCM) saturable absorber in a mode-locked fibre laser for the generation of ultrafast pulses. The proposed all-surface technique can guarantee a higher efficiency of light–graphene interactions than the aforementioned techniques. Our GCM-based saturable absorber can generate ultrafast optical pulses within 1.5 μm. This saturable absorber is compatible with current fibre lasers and has many merits such as low saturation intensities, ultrafast recovery times and wide wavelength ranges. The proposed saturable absorber will pave the way for graphene-based wideband photonics.

Abstract:A fiber laser resonantly pumped 1.645 μm passively Q-switched Er:YAG laser is reported. Graphene on a silicon carbide was used as the saturable absorber for the Q-switching. The pulse energy of the 1.645 μm Q-switched Er:YAG laser was 7.05 μJ, with a pulse repetition rate of 35.6 kHz and an average output power of 251 mW.

Abstract:High-quality monolayer graphene films with large area were grown on Cu foils by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. For the first time, graphene saturable absorbers (SAs) with well-defined layer numbers were fabricated by controlling of transfer process precisely. Using the graphene SAs, stable Q-switched mode-locking pulse trains with a nearly 100% modulation depth were realized in a diode-pumped YVO4/Nd:YVO4 laser. At the pump power of 6.0W, the average output power reached a high value of 1.6W. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest output power of passively mode-locked solid-state laser using graphene SA, suggesting that the low-cost, broadband graphene SA could potentially be employed in practical high-power mode-locking laser system.

Abstract:Double-layer graphene epitaxially grown on silicon carbide was used to Q-switch a Tm:YAG laser. Stable Q-switched laser pulses at the central wavelength of 2.01 μm were obtained. The maximum average output power, pulse repetition rate, and single pulse energy were 38 mW, 27.9 kHz, and 1.74 μJ, respectively. Our results illustrate that graphene can be used as a saturable absorber at the 2 μm region.

Abstract:A Q-switched Er-doped fiber laser is demonstrated using graphene as saturable absorber (SA). The graphene SA is fabricated to the fiber end using optically driven deposition method. As we increase the pump power from 128 mW to 380 mW, the pulse repetition rate of the Q-switched fiber laser changed from 23 to 67 KHz and the pulse width varies from 5.2 to 0.9μs. A repetition rate of 67 KHz is obtained at the maximum pump power of 380 mW, with pulse width and pulse energy of 0.9μs and 179 nJ, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a passively Q-Switched solid state pulse laser based on silver-plated Graphene as a saturable absorber (SA). The pulsed laser operating at 1064.1 nm was realized at the threshold of 2.2 W. The pulse repetition rate of the laser can be widely changed from 0.102 to 1.29 MHz, the maximum output power and the narrowest pulse width are 509.2 mW and 280 ns, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the intrinsic properties of monolayer graphene allow it to act as a more effective saturable absorber for mode-locking fiber lasers when compared to multilayer graphene. The absorption of monolayer graphene can be saturated at lower excitation intensity compared to multilayer graphene, graphene with wrinkle-like defects, or functionalized graphene. Monolayer graphene has a remarkably large modulation depth of 65.9%, whereas the modulation depth of multilayer graphene is greatly reduced due to nonsaturable absorption and scattering loss. Picosecond ultrafast laser pulses (1.23 ps) can be generated using monolayer graphene as a saturable absorber. Due to the ultrafast relaxation time, larger modulation depth and lower scattering loss of monolayer graphene, it performs better than multilayer graphene in terms of pulse shaping ability, pulse stability, and output energy.

Abstract:We report on a nanosecond pulse generation in a diode end-pumped passively Q-switched Nd: GGG laser at the low-gain transition line of 1331 nm. A three-layer CVD graphene thin film was transferred from Cu foil to a BK7 glass substrate for the use of saturable absorber. A stable Q-switching laser operation was obtained with maximum average output power of 0.69W and slope efficiency of about 11.0% with respect to the absorbed pump power. The shortest pulse duration and the maximum repetition rate of the pulse trains were registered to be 556 ns and 166.7 kHz with corresponding maximum pulse energy 4.14 mu J and pulse peak power 7.45 W. This is the first demonstration of CVD-graphene-based Q-switched laser operation at 1.3 mu m, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:We introduce a saturable absorber by coating double graphene films on a fusion stretched microfiber waveguide, compare with employing graphene films sandwiched between fiber ferrules that stable Q-switched pulse disappeared at 240 mW pump, it shows feasibility for improved Q-switching operation at higher optical damage threshold (up to 600 mW), repetition rate increased from 50.38 to 73.06 kHz and pulse energy from 76.82 to 93.76 nJ, as pump power change from 300 to 500 mW. And our laser produced 1.94 ps mode-locked pulse at ~1560 nm by GMF. Bilayer chemical vapor deposition synthesized graphene was used to enhance the evanescent interaction with the microfiber.

Abstract:Here we report on the exfoliation of graphene by using femtosecond pulsed laser with the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) immersed in water. The size of the graphene flakes was demonstrated to be well regulated by controlling the peak-power density of the femtosecond laser irradiation on the HOPG. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify the morphology and crystalline phase of the graphene. As an application, the few-layers-graphene absorber with a modulation depth of 0.5% was used in a passive Q-switched Nd: YVO4 laser. A Q-switched nanosecond pulse train with the maximum pulse energy of 262.35 nJ and the narrowest pulse duration of 131.6 ns was obtained.

Abstract:Tunable continuous wave and passively Q-switched Nd:LuLiF4 laser performances were demonstrated. Employing a 2 mm thick quartz plate as the birefringence filter, three continuous tuning ranges from 1045.2 to 1049.9 nm, 1051 to 1055.1 nm and 1072.1 to 1074.3 nm could be obtained. Q-switched laser operation was realized by using a monolayer graphene as a saturable absorber. At an incident pump power of 5.94 W, the maximum average output power was 669 mW with the pulse duration of 210 ns and the pulse repetition rate of 145 kHz at T = 10%.

Abstract:The uniform-quality, large-area, monolayer graphene saturable absorber (SA) with sandwich structure was fabricated, tested, and successfully applied for the generation of diode-pumped Yb: Y2SiO5 mode-locked laser. Without extra negative dispersion elements, the shortest pulse with duration of similar to 883 fs was obtained at 1042.6 nm with an output power of similar to 1 W. These promising experimental results suggested that the low-cost, high-quality graphene SA could potentially be employed in practical, high-power, ultrafast mode-locking laser systems. Abstract:A 1123 nm ceramic Nd:YAG laser passively Q-switched by graphene grown on SiC wafer was demonstrated. With a pump power of 8.1 W, an average output power of 332 mW was obtained, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 4.1% and a slope efficiency of 7.8%. The pulse width was 875.7 ns with a pulse repetition rate of 46.8 kHz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a wideband-tunable Q-switched fiber laser exploiting a graphene saturable absorber. We get ∼2 μs pulses, tunable between 1522 and 1555 nm with up to ∼40 nJ energy. This is a simple and low-cost light source for metrology, environmental sensing, and biomedical diagnostics.

Abstract:The optical conductance of monolayer graphene is defined solely by the fine structure constant. The absorbance has been predicted to be independent of frequency. In principle, the interband optical absorption in zero-gap graphene could be saturated readily under strong excitation due to Pauli blocking. Here, we demonstrate the use of atomic layer graphene as saturable absorber in a mode-locked fiber laser for the generation of ultrashort soliton pulses (756 fs) at the telecommunication band. The modulation depth can be tuned in a wide range from 66.5% to 6.2% by varying the thickness of graphene. Our results suggest that ultrathin graphene films are potentially useful as optical elements in fiber lasers. Graphene as a laser mode locker can have many merits such as lower saturation intensity, ultrafast recovery time, tunable modulation depth and wideband tuneability.

Abstract:Abstract. A continuous wave (CW) Tm:YAP laser resonantly pumped Ho:YLF laser in CW mode and passive Q-switched (PQS) mode with multilayer graphene as a saturable absorber is reported. A comparison analysis of laser performances with two different output couplers is carried out. In PQS mode, an maximum average output power of 2.26 W is obtained, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 20.7%. The minimum pulse width observed is 651.9 ns with a center wavelength of 2057.16 nm with a 300-mm radius curvature and 50% transmission output coupler. Meanwhile, the maximum pulse repetition frequency of 59.2 kHz is obtained. The beam quality factor of M2 was 1.2, which is the near diffraction limit. The results show that multilayer graphene can be used as a saturable absorber in a Ho:YLF laser around a 2-μm wavelength.

Abstract:Two-dimensional material has been widely used in the emerging ultrafast solid-state lasers due to its saturable absorption properties. However, its constant absorption state makes it difficult to regulate the laser output performance. In this paper, the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method is used to prepare a few layer graphene (Gr) film on a glass substrate and a Gr-saturable absorber (Gr-SA) device is prepared through processes such as inkjet printing, coating, and drying. Raman spectroscopy and spectrophotometer are used to perform systematic optical characterization and analysis of Gr-SA devices, and the nonlinear transmission characteristics of Gr SA are measured by a balanced synchronous dual detector system. The results show that Gr SA devices have voltage-controllable nonlinear absorption characteristics. The Gr-SA device is applied to the Nd: YVO4 all-solid-state laser system, which can achieve a stable Q-switched output with a wavelength of 1064.1 nm. Keeping the pumping optical power constant, the laser output with adjustable pulse width from 900 ns to 395 ns can be achieved by changing the gate voltage , and the corresponding repetition frequency can he increased from 62 kHz to 158 kHz.

Abstract:An LD pumped Nd:LuGdAG (Nd:Lu2.9Gd0.1Al5O12) eye-safe laser is reported in this paper for the first time. Using a plano-concave resonator, maximum continuous wave output powers of 1.00 and 1.05 W were obtained under an absorbed pump power of 8.52 W for T = 2%-3% and 5%-7%, corresponding to an optical to optical conversion efficiency of 12.3% and 11.7% and a slope efficiency of 14.5% and 13.6%. With five to seven layers of graphene saturable absorber, passively Q-switched 1444nm operation was achieved for the first time. The maximum average output power found was 0.29 W with 324 ns as the shortest pulse width and a highest repetition rate of 64kHz.

Abstract:A 1.3 mu m passively Q-switched Nd:KLu(WO4)(2) laser under direct 880nm pumping is reported. Graphene on a silicon carbide is used as the saturable absorber.
