Abstract:The large object (container etc.) inspection systems have been researched and developed by INET (Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology) for anti-smuggling since 1990. At first, the research work was on the LINAC (linear accelerator) system, which then turned to γ(60Co) DR (digital radiography) inspection systems after 1996. To fight against terrorism, the container γCT (computed tomography) system, which possesses the ability of material determination, has been researched and constructed since 2001. INET also had begun to research luggage DR-CT system with similar material determination ability in 2003. The γ (60Co) DR container inspection systems include many types, such as fixed type, relocated type, mobile type and train-cargo inspection system. All these types of 60Co DR system have been put in mass-production and settled in many Chinese customs and harbors or in other countries. These apparatus have been working very well now. An important inspection problem, which bothers Custom officers all along, is how to determine the material of goods inside container. We have suggested a way to solve this problem γ applying CT technology to inspect container, pallet, car or other large objects. The sample machine of container CT system using 60Co γ-ray source had been constructed in 2003. The practice experience for more than two years has convinced that, the container CT system is really possesses the ability of material determination and can heighten the inspection performance to a new level. Some new luggage inspection systems possessing CT performance have been developed in U.S. to fight against terrorism since 2001. X-ray machine is the only type of radiation source used inside these systems. INET has researched and constructed a new type of luggage DR-CT inspection system, which uses an x-ray machine at DR subsystem and a 192Ir γ-ray source at CT subsystem.
