Abstract:microRNAs (miRNAs) are a group of evolutionally conserved single chain non-coding RNA molecules of 17-25 nucleotides in length regulating targeted gene expression post-transcriptionally. miRNAs are involved in the regulation of physiological processes including cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis and metabolism, and some of them may function as oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes, which are implicated in the genesis and progress of cancer. Now miRNAs are expected to be used as novel biomarkers for the diagnosis, prognosis assessment and targeted treatment of esophageal carcinoma. This article reviewed the characteristics of miRNAs and the progress in the study of miRNAs in esophageal carcinoma.
