Abstract:Abstract We study the strengths of various notions of higher randomness: (i) strong ${\rm{\Pi }}_1^1$randomness is separated from ${\rm{\Pi }}_1^1$randomness; (ii) the hyperdegrees of ${\rm{\Pi }}_1^1$random reals are closed downwards (except for the trivial degree); (iii) the reals z in $NC{R_{{\rm{\Pi }}_1^1}}$ are precisely those satisfying $z \in {L_{\omega _1^z}}$ and (iv) lowness for ${\rm{\Delta }}_1^1$randomness is strictly weaker than that for ${\rm{\Pi }}_1^1$randomness.

Abstract:One of the main lines of research in algorithmic randomness is that of lowness notions. Given a randomness notion R, we ask for which sequences A does relativization to A leave R unchanged (i.e., R^A = R)? Such sequences are call low for R. This question extends to a pair of randomness notions R and S, where S is weaker: for which A is S^A still weaker than R? In the last few years, many results have characterized the sequences that are low for randomness by their low computational strength. A few results have also given measure-theoretic characterizations of low sequences. For example, Kjos-Hanssen proved that A is low for Martin-Löf randomness if and only if every A-c.e. open set of measure less than 1 can be covered by a c.e. open set of measure less than 1. In this paper, we give a series of results showing that a wide variety of lowness notions can be expressed in a similar way, i.e., via the ability to cover open sets of a certain type by open sets of some other type. This provides a unified framework that clarifies the study of lowness for randomness notions, and allows us to give simple proofs of a number of known results. We also use this framework to prove new results, including showing that the classes Low(MLR;SR) and Low(W2R;SR) coincide, answering a question of Nies. Other applications include characterizations of highness notions, a broadly applicable explanation for why low for randomness is the same as low for tests, and a simple proof that Low(W2R;S)=Low(MLR;S), where S is the class of Martin-Löf, computable, or Schnorr random sequences. The final section gives characterizations of lowness notions using summable functions and convergent measure machines instead of open covers. We finish with a simple proof of a result of Nies, that Low(MLR) = Low(MLR; CR).

Abstract:Theories of random sets and fuzzy random sets are useful concepts which are frequently applied in scientific areas including information science, probability and statistics. In this paper strong limit theorems are derived for random sets and fuzzy random sets with slowly varying weights in separable Banach spaces. Both independent and dependent cases are covered to provide a wide range of applications.

Abstract:One approach to understanding the. ne structure of initial segment complexity was introduced by Downey, Hirschfeldt and LaForte. They define X <=(K) Y to mean that (for all n) K( X vertical bar n) <= K(Y vertical bar n) + O( 1). The equivalence classes under this relation are the K-degrees. We prove that if X circle plus Y is 1-random, then X and Y have no upper bound in the K-degrees (hence, no join). We also prove that n-randomness is closed upward in the K-degrees. Our main tool is another structure intended to measure the degree of randomness of real numbers: the nu L-degrees. Unlike the K-degrees, many basic properties of the nu L-degrees are easy to prove. We show that X <=(K) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y, so some results can be transferred. The reverse implication is proved to fail. The same analysis is also done for <=(C), the analogue of <=(K) for plain Kolmogorov complexity.Two other interesting results are included. First, we prove that for any Z is an element of 2(omega), a 1-random real computable from a 1-Z-random real is automatically 1-Z-random. Second, we give a plain Kolmogorov complexity characterization of 1-randomness. This characterization is related to our proof that X <=(C) Y implies X <=(nu L) Y.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of returns and well-aligned sets for closed relations on compact metric spaces and then use them to obtain non-trivial sufficient conditions for such a relation to have non-zero entropy. In addition, we give a characterization of finite relations with non-zero entropy in terms of Li–Yorke and DC2 chaos.

Abstract:We survey the Kolmogorov's approach to the notion of randomness through the Kolmogorov complexity theory. The original motivation of Kolmogorov was to give up a quantitative definition of information. In this theory, an object is randomness in the sense that it has a large information content. Afterwards, we present parts of the work of Martin-Lof, Schnorr, Chaitin and Levin which supply a mathematical notion of randomness throughout diverse theories from the the 60' up to recently.

Set Descriptive Complexity of Solvable Functions

Abstract:In a recent article, we introduced and studied a precise class of dynamical systems called solvable systems. These systems present a dynamic ruled by discontinuous ordinary differential equations with solvable right-hand terms and unique evolution. They correspond to a class of systems for which a transfinite method exist to compute the solution. We also presented several examples including a nontrivial one whose solution yields, at an integer time, a real encoding of the halting set for Turing machines; therefore showcasing that the behavior of solvable systems might describe ordinal Turing computations. In the current article, we study in more depth solvable systems, using tools from descriptive set theory. By establishing a correspondence with the class of well-founded trees, we construct a coanalytic ranking over the set of solvable functions and discuss its relation with other existing rankings for differentiable functions, in particular with the Kechris-Woodin, Denjoy and Zalcwasser ranking. We prove that our ranking is unbounded below the first uncountable ordinal.

Abstract:PurposeIn this two‐part series, this paper seeks to consider certain intriguing aspects of randomness, the basic mathematical concept used to model financial risk and other unknown quantities in the physical world.Design/methodology/approachPart 1 applies concepts from quantum physics and algorithmic information theory to distinguish between knowable complexity and unknowable complexity.FindingsIn Part 1, it is found that Heisenberg's uncertainty principle can be used to provide concrete examples of random variables, and that the Kolmogorov/Chaitin notion of algorithmic complexity can be used to define the formal concept of randomness.Originality/valueThe two‐part series explores the underlying nature of randomness in terms of both its physical/mathematical properties and its role in human cognition.

Abstract:A set A is a base for Schnorr randomness if it is Turing reducible to a set R that is Schnorr random relative to A, and the notion of a base for weak 1‐genericity can be defined similarly. We show that A is a base for Schnorr randomness if and only if A is a base for weak 1‐genericity if and only if the halting set K is not Turing reducible to A. Furthermore, we define a set A to be high for Schnorr randomness versus Martin‐Löf randomness if and only if every set that is Schnorr random relative to A is also Martin‐Löf random unrelativized, and we show that A is high for Schnorr randomness versus Martin‐Löf randomness if and only if K is Turing reducible to A. Results concerning highness for other pairs of randomness notions are also presented.

Abstract:The topological entropy of a topological dynamical system, introduced in a foundational paper by Adler, Konheim and McAndrew [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1965], is a nonnegative number that measures the uncertainty or disorder of the system. Comparing with positive entropy systems, zero entropy systems are much less understood. In order to distinguish between zero entropy systems, Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] introduced the concept of maximal pattern entropy of a topological dynamical system. At the heart of their analysis is a Sauer-Shelah type lemma. In the present paper, we provide a shorter and more conceptual proof of a strengthening of this lemma, and discuss its surprising connection between dynamical system, combinatorics and a recent breakthrough in communication complexity. We also improve one of the main results of Huang and Ye on the maximal pattern entropy of zero-dimensional systems, by proving a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma, which unifies and enhances various extremal results on VC-dimension, Natarajan dimension and Steele dimension.

Abstract:A series of papers by Hickey (1982, 1983, 1984) presents a stochastic ordering based on randomness. This paper extends the results by introducing a novel methodology to derive models that preserve stochastic ordering based on randomness. We achieve this by presenting a new family of pseudometric spaces based on a majorization property. This class of pseudometrics provides a new methodology for deriving the randomness measure of a random variable. Using this, the paper introduces the Gini randomness measure and states its essential properties. We demonstrate that the proposed measure has certain advantages over entropy measures. The measure satisfies the value validity property, provides an adequate extension to continuous random variables, and is often more appropriate (based on sensitivity) than entropy in various scenarios.

Abstract:In this work, we address the question of the impossibility of certain single-letter formulas by exploiting the semi-algebraic nature of various entropy-constrained sets. The focus lies on studying the properties of the level sets of relative entropy, mutual information, and Rényi entropies. We analyze the transcendental structure of the set of states in which one of the aforementioned entropy quantities is fixed. Our results rule out (semi)algebraic single-shot characterizations of these entropy measures with bounded ancilla for both the classical and quantum cases.
