Abstract:Sensing technology is the key of intelligent packaging. A variety of different sensing systems for indicating freshness through intelligent packaging have been presented. Polyaniline (PANI) can change its color reversibly through the acid-base reaction with reactive compounds and has been widely used in different kinds of sensors. However, because PANI is insoluble in common organic solvents, this limits its practical usage in many applications. In this work, a highly stable polyaniline-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS) colloid has been developed as a facile colorimetric sensor of volatile amines. The results showed the PANI:PSS colloid is quite sensitive to changes in pH. When PANI:PSS colloids were homogenously deposited on filter paper, the paper are used as a sensor to detect triethylamine (TEA) vapor. The green color of the test paper changed to blue at a TEA concentration as low as 188 ppm.
Electrochemical DNA Biosensor Based on Conducting Polyaniline Nanotube Array.

Abstract:Most of the recent developments in ultrasensitive detection of nucleic acid are based on the gold nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes as a medium of signal amplification. Here, we present an ultrasensitive electrochemical nucleic acid biosensor using the conducting polyaniline (PANI) nanotube array as the signal enhancement element. The PANI nanotube array of a highly organized structure was fabricated under a well-controlled nanoscale dimension on the graphite electrode using a thin nano-porous layer as a template, and 21-mer oligonucleotide probes were immobilized on these PANI nanotubes. In comparison with gold nanoparticle- or carbon nanotube-based DNA biosensors, our PANI nanotube array-based DNA biosensor could achieve similar sensitivity without catalytic enhancement, purification, or end-opening processing. The electrochemical results showed that the conducting PANI nanotube array had a signal enhancement capability, allowing the DNA biosensor to readily detect the target oligonucleotide at a concentration as low as 1.0 fM (similar to 300 zmol of target molecules). In addition, this biosensor demonstrated good capability of differentiating the perfect matched target oligonucleotide from one-nucleotide mismatched oligonucleotides even at a concentration of 37.59 fM. This detection specificity indicates that this biosensor could be applied to single-nucleotide polymorphism analysis and single-mutation detection.
Fabrication of one dimensional polyaniline nanofibers by UV-assisted polymerization in the aqueous phase.

Abstract:At the room temperature, a novel and environmental friendly approach for synthesizing polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers on a large scale is presented firstly in the aqueous phase by ultraviolet (UV)-assisted polymerization using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the "soft-template." It is obvious that the polymerization process can be accelerated under the illumination of UV light and the preliminary mechanism has been pointed out. Furthermore, it also can be noted that the lower concentrations of CTAB and HCl are helpful for the fabrication of smooth and uniform PANI nanofibers. As observed with FE-SEM and TEM, the as-synthesized PANI nanostructures under the appropriate conditions are composed of uniform nanofibers with the average diameter of about 100 nm and the length of several micrometers. Subsequently, the synthesized PANI nanostructures are characterized with UV-vis, FTIR, XRD spectra, and the typical physical and chemical properties of PANI are displayed. In addition, the conductivity of the synthesized PANI nanofibers was also measured with the four probe method and the excellent conductivity was presented. In summary, the procedure presented here only involving exposure of an acidic aqueous solution of aniline to UV light illumination is so simple and the needed equipment is so low cost, from the viewpoint of technological applications, that the large-scale UV-assisted polymerization of PANI nanofibers from the monomer solution is feasible and promising.
Construction of Highly Ordered Polyaniline Nanowires and Their Applications in DNA Sensing

Abstract:A novel electrochemical active polyaniline (PANI) nanowire was fabricated and utilized for the construction of a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for hepatitis B virus gene. The uniform PANI nanowire was prepared by the enzymatic polymerization of aniline monomers on the amyloid-like nanofiber (AP nanowire), which was self-assembled from an aniline-attached nonapeptide, aniline-GGAAKLVFF (AP). The prepared PANI nanowires were characterized by electron microscopy, UV–vis absorption spectra, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). These ultra-thin nanowires displayed high electrochemical activity. Then the nucleic acid biosensor was constructed by modifying a glass carbon electrode with AP nanowires which were functionalized by a designed hair-pin loop DNA. Upon the presence of target nucleic acid and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled oligonucleotide, the HRP will catalyze the polymerization of aniline monomers conjugated in AP nanowires, leading to the formation of PANI nanowires which can bring about a dramatical increase in the current response of the biosensor. The dynamic range of the sensor for hepatitis B virus gene is 2.0–800.0fM with a low detection limit of 1.0fM (3σ, n=10). The biosensor also displayed highly selectivity and stability. All these excellent performances of the developed biosensor indicate that this platform can be easily extended to the detection of other nucleic acids.

Abstract:The determination of specific nucleic acid sequences is key in identifying disease-causing pathogens and genetic diseases. In this paper we report the utilization of Fe-nitrilotriacetic acid coordination polymer nanowires as an effective nanoquencher for fluorescence-enhanced nucleic acid detection. The detection is fast and the whole process can be completed within 15 min. This nanosensor shows a low detection limit of 0.2 nM with selectivity down to single-base mismatch. This work provides us with an attractive sensing platform for applications.

Abstract:In this article, we report on the facile and rapid synthesis of conjugation polymer poly(p-phenylenediamine) nanobelts (PNs) via room temperature chemical oxidation polymerization of p-phenylenediamine monomers by ammonium persulfate in aqueous medium. We further demonstrate the proof-of-concept that PNs can be used as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for nucleic acid detection for the first time. The general concept used in this approach lies in the facts that the adsorption of the fluorescently labeled single-stranded DNA probe by PN leads to substantial fluorescence quenching, followed by specific hybridization with the complementary region of the target DNA sequence. This results in desorption of the hybridized complex from PN surface and subsequent recovery of fluorescence. We also show that the sensing platform described herein can be used for multiplexing detection of nucleic acid sequences.
Dual-emissive polyaniline derived lotus-pod nano-hybrids for ultrasensitive and highly selective fluorescent recognition towards aniline

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with superior sensitivity, stability and molecular recognition capability are highly desirable for sensing applications in complex environments. Herein, a new strategy to fabricate confined CQDs within PANI-derived polymer dots is designed, based on solvothermal treatment of polyaniline (PANI) and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (2,3-DAN) using N,N-dimethylformamide as the solvent. The obtained hybrids demonstrates a unique stable “lotus-pod” structure, of which PANI-derived polymer dots functions as the pod room to confine the in situ grown CQDs. The hybrid exhibits dual-emission (blue-orange), and the existence of quinoid moieties in CQDs enables ultrasensitive fluorescent recognition of aniline with a detection limit of 12.46 pM. Its selectivity towards aniline is also outstanding in comparison of other aromatic interferents with similar structures and functional groups. The sensing mechanism could be owing to the interaction between the quinoid nitrogen and aniline molecule, resulting in fluorescence quenching. This work provides a novel design strategy to construct well-confined CQDs embedded in polymer dots with excellent sensing ability for promising fluorescent sensing applications, especially under complex conditions.

Abstract:Template-free, self-assembled polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes were prepared in a solution of poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEA) by oxidative polymerization using ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. The weight ratio of the polymeric acid to aniline in the solution had a significant effect on the size of the polyaniline nanotubes as determined by SEM. The outer diameter of the nanotubes increased from 65 nm to 160 run with increased levels of PMVEA in the reaction solution from 1 to 4 wt/v%. The PANI/PMVEA nanotubes were characterized by FTIR and cyclic voltammetry. The nanotubes were used to construct a simple electrochemical oligonucleotide (ODN) sensor where ODN probes were covalently grafted onto the residual carboxylic acid functionalities on the nanotubes. The potential pulse amperometry technique was used to obtain a direct and fast electrochemical readout.

Abstract:By using spectral analysis in the visible/near-infrared region, we demonstrate a single waveguiding polyaniline/polystyrene nanowire for highly selective detection of gas mixtures with a NH3 detection limit on parts-per-million level and relative humidity sensing ranging from 37% to 84%. Abstract:We describe here a sensitive sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence DNA biosensor based on a polyaniline–nanogold (PANI–AuNPs) modified platform with tris(2,2-bipyridyl)dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate ([Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ )–nanoporous gold (Ru–NPG) composite as a label. The PANI was obtained by electropolymerization of aniline on the surface of indium–tin oxide (ITO) glass and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were fabricated by the reaction of PANI. The fabricated AuNPs were further grown to a larger size in HAuCl 4 solution and the capture DNA was fastened onto the ITO glass on the basis of the interaction with AuNPs. NPG was prepared by a selective dissolution of silver from silver–gold alloy in nitric acid, which provided free-standing noble metal membranes with controllable three-dimensional porosity to immobilize more [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ . On the basis of a sandwich-type hybridization reaction, the Ru–PANI labeled reporter DNA was captured by the target DNA. The as-proposed DNA biosensor enables target DNA concentrations to be determined in the 0.05–1,000 fM concentration range, with a detection limit of 0.01 fM. Graphical abstract
Polyaniline Synthesized by Different Dopants for Fluorene Detection via Photoluminescence Spectroscopy

Abstract:The effects of different dopants on the synthesis, optical, electrical and thermal features of polyaniline were investigated. Polyaniline (PANI) doped with p-toluene sulfonic acid (PANI-PTSA), camphor sulphonic acid (PANI-CSA), acetic acid (PANI-acetic acid) and hydrochloric acid (PANI-HCl) was synthesized through the oxidative chemical polymerization of aniline under acidic conditions at ambient temperature. Fourier transform infrared light, X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrical analysis were used to define physical and structural features, bandgap values, electrical conductivity and type and degree of doping, respectively. Tauc calculation reveals the optical band gaps of PANI-PTSA, PANI-CSA, PANI-acetic acid and PANI-HCl at 3.1, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.9 eV, respectively. With the increase in dopant size, crystallinity is reduced, and interchain separations and d-spacing are strengthened. The estimated conductivity values of PANI-PTSA, PANI-CSA, PANI-acetic acid and PANI-HCl are 3.84 × 101, 2.92 × 101, 2.50 × 10-2, and 2.44 × 10-2 S·cm-1, respectively. Particularly, PANI-PTSA shows high PL intensity because of its orderly arranged benzenoid and quinoid units. Owing to its excellent synthesis, low bandgap, high photoluminescence intensity and high electrical features, PANI-PTSA is a suitable candidate to improve PANI properties and electron provider for fluorene-detecting sensors with a linear range of 0.001-10 μM and detection limit of 0.26 nM.
Composites of polyaniline nanofibers and molecularly imprinted polymers for recognition of nitroaromatic compounds.

Abstract:This paper reports a monomer strategy for imprinting of 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) molecules at the surface of conductive functional polyaniline nanofibers (PANI) for the first time. It has been demonstrated that the vinyl functional monomer layer on the PANI surface can not only direct the selective occurrence of imprinting polymerization, but can also drive DNB templates into the polymer through charge-transfer complexing interactions between DNB and functionalized PANI. These two basic processes lead to the formation of DNB-imprinted polymers at the surface of polyaniline nanofibers. The capacity to uptake DNB shows that selectivity coefficient in the nanofibers polymers is nearly three times as high as that of traditional imprinted materials and the nanofibers polymers also possess high selectivity toward DNB in comparison to similar nitroaromatic compounds. A linear response of DNB concentration between 2.20 x 10(-8) and 3.08 x 10(-6) M was exhibited with a detection limit of 7.33 x 10(-9) M (S/N = 3). These results reported here could form the basis of a new strategy for preparing various polymer-coating layers on polyaniline supports and the molecular imprinting techniques discussed could also find applications in the fields of separation, trace detection, and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A highly sensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor made of polyaniline (PANI) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) nanocomposite (AuNPs@PANI) has been used for the detection of trace concentration of Ag+. In the presence of Ag+, with the interaction of cytosine Ag+ cytosine (C Ag+ C), cytosine-rich DNA sequence immobilized onto the surface of AuNPs@PANI has a self-hybridization and then forms a duplexlike structure. The whole detection procedure of Ag+ based on the developed biosensor was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. On semi-logarithmic plots of the log Ag+ concentration versus peak current, the results show that the prepared biosensor can detect silver ions at a wide linear range of 0.01-100 nM (R = 0.9828) with a detection limit of 10 pM (signal/noise = 3). Moreover, the fabricated sensor exhibits good selectivity and repeatability. The detection of Ag+ was determined by Ag+ selfinduced conformational change of DNA scaffold that involved only one oligonucleotide, showing its convenience and availability. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. A Novel Electrochemical DNA Biosensor Based on Graphene and Polyaniline Nanowires

Abstract:A novel DNA biosensor based on oxidized graphene and polyaniline nanowires (PANIws) modified glassy carbon electrode was developed. The resulting graphene/PANIw layers exhibited good DPV current response for the complementary DNA sequences. The good electron transfer activity might be attributed to the effect of graphene and PANIw. Graphene and PANIw nanolayers film with highly conductive and biocompatible nanostructure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The immobilization of the probe DNA on the surface of electrode was largely improved due to the unique synergetic effect of graphene and PANIw. Under optimum conditions, the biosensor exhibited a fast amperometric response, high sensitivity and good storage stability for monitoring DNA. The current response of the sensor increases linearly with the concentration of target from 2.12×10−6 to 2.12×10−12moll−1 with a relative coefficient of 0.9938. The detection limit (3σ) is 3.25×10−13moll−1. The results indicate that this modified electrode has potential application in sensitive and selective DNA detection.

Abstract:In this communication, the application of coordination polymer nanobelts (CPNs) assembled from H(2)PtCl(6) and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) are explored as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for nucleic acid detection for the first time. The suggested method has a high selectivity down to single-base mismatch. DNA detection is accomplished by the following two steps: (1) CPN binds fluorecent dye-labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe via both electrostatic attraction and π-π stacking interactions between unpaired DNA bases and CPN. As a result, the fluorescent dye is brought into close proximity to CPN and substantial fluorescence quenching occurs due to photoinduced electron transfer from the nitrogen atom in CPN to the excited fluorophore. (2) The hybridization of adsorbed ssDNA probe with its target generates a double stranded DNA (dsDNA). The duplex cannot be adsorbed by CPN due to its rigid conformation and the absence of unpaired DNA bases, leading to an obvious fluorescence enhancement.

Abstract:The designed synthesis of new nanomaterials with controlled shape, composition, and structure is critical for tuning their physical and chemical properties, and further developing interesting analytical sensing devices. Herein, we presented that Pd nanowires (NWs) can be used as a new biosensing platform for high-sensitivity nucleic acid detection. The general sensing concept is based on the fact that Pd NWs can adsorb the fluorescently labeled single-stranded DNA probe and lead to substantial fluorescence quenching of dye, followed by specific hybridization with the complementary region of the target DNA sequence. This results in desorption of double-stranded DNA from Pd NWs surface and subsequent recovery of fluorescence. Furthermore, an amplification strategy based on Pd NWs for nucleic acid detection by using exonuclease III (Exo III) was demonstrated. The present dual-magnification sensing system combined Pd NWs with Exo III has a detection range of 1.0 nM to 2.0 mu M with the detection limit of 0.3 nM (S/N = 3), which is about 20-fold higher than that of traditional unamplified homogeneous assays.

Abstract:A sensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor was successfully realized on polyaniline nanofibers (PANI), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and chitosan (CHIT) modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) based on the synergistic effect between PANI and MWNT nanoparticles in chitosan film. PANI and MWNT nanocomposites resulted in highly enhanced electron conductive and biocompatible nanostructured film, which was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The immobilization of the probe DNA on the surface of electrode was largely improved due to the unique synergistic effect of PANI and MWNT. The DNA hybridization events were monitored with an EIS label-free detection strategy. Under the optimal conditions, the dynamic detection range of this DNA electrochemical biosensor was from 1.0 x 10(-13) to 1.0 x 10(-7)mol/L and a detection limit of 2.7 x 10(-14)mol/L for the detection of DNA specific sequence of the phosphinothricin acetyltransferase gene (PAT, one of the important screening detection genes for the transgenic plants). Simultaneously, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the terminator of nopaline synthase gene (NOS) from the sample of one kind of genetically modified soybean was also detected satisfactorily.

Abstract:Herein, coordination polymer nanobelts (CPNBs) were prepared rapidly and on a large scale, by directly mixing aqueous AgNO(3) solution and an ethanol solution of 4, 4'-bipyridine at room temperature. The application of such CPNBs as a fluorescent sensing platform for nucleic acid detection was further explored. CPNB is a π-rich structure, the strong π-π stacking interactions between unpaired DNA bases and CPNB leads to adsorption of fluorescently labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) accompanied by 66% fluorescence quenching. However, the presence of target ssDNA will hybridize with the probe. The resultant helix cannot be adsorbed by CPNB due to its rigid conformation and the absence of unpaired DNA bases. Thus, a significant fluorescence enhancement, 73% fluorescence recovery, was observed in DNA detection as long as the target exists. The present system has excellent sensitivity; a substantial fluorescence enhancement was observed when the concentration of the target was as low as 5 nM. It also exhibits outstanding discrimination ability down to a single-base mismatch.
