Abstract:We investigate lasing and output directionality of limacon-shaped microdisk lasers of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. The far-field patterns are shown to differ between lasing modes, unlike in large cavities where lasing modes exhibit universal emission directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics. Unidirectional emission is obtained for certain modes in the wavelength-scale cavities. It results from weak coupling of nearly isotropic high-quality resonances to anisotropic low-quality resonances, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. The latter is described by an extended ray dynamics which includes the Goos-Hanchen shift and the Fresnel filtering. Mode hybridization and wave effects in open cavities make it possible to control the output properties of individual lasing modes in wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:A recent development in the fabrication of quantum dot based microdisk lasers is the ability to reduce their dimensions to approximately the emission wavelength. In this chapter we show that deforming the cross-sectional shape of such disk lasers can lead to highly directional light output from high-quality modes. The directional emission results from weak coupling of isotropic high-quality modes to anisotropic low-quality modes, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. The fact that the quality factor stays high is explained by the existence of partial barriers in the phase space of ray dynamics. These two mechanisms make it possible to control the output properties of wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:Short thin cylinders can be the basic part of mesoscopic actuators powered by laser tweezers. We demonstrate that micro size birefringent colloidal coins can be positioned translationally and orientationally in advance of the prediction of current theoretical modeling. Circularly polarized laser tweezers keep driving the rotation of the microdisk. Viscous flow between a hard wall and a microdisk excites the disk to an oscillation orbit. These disks can be fabricated via solidification of emulsion drops by tuning temperature or solvent concentration so that molecules in the drop assuming a smectic phase.

Abstract:Optical microdisk is based on circularly symmetric micro-resonator and featured of the "whispering-gallery" modes with high quality of factor Q. However, the non-preferred directional emission and lack of high output from the disk al-e its drawbacks for application. Recently, a remarkable advance in the novel deformed microdisk laser at middle-infrared wavelength is highly attractive. In this report, as a preliminary try for microdisk at visible range, the InGaAIP quantum well (QW) circular cylindrical and deformed microdisks with radii about 2.5 to 10 mu m emitting at wavelength of 0.62-0.67 mu m were prepared by electron beam lithography and wet etching processing etc. The optical emission properties of these microdisks are studied by employing the scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fluorescence image microscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy etc. The preferential emission In these deformed microdisks was visually observed. When the cross section of microdisk was gradually deformed from circle, the change of fluorescence image from uniform ring towards 2 or 4 favorable emission along the circumference of microdisks was confirmed. The deformation could be caused by either the shape or etching profile of the disk waveguide. In addition, the microdisks patterned with some microstructures were proposed.

Abstract:To overcome the isotropic directional emission of an ideal circular microdisk, two kinds of cylindrical mesa-like InGaAlP single quantum well (SQW) microdisks emitting at a visible red wavelength of 0.66 mu m have been fabricated. An anisotropic luminescence pattern was revealed by the microscopic fluorescence (FL) image. FL intensity, preferentially enhanced with twofold symmetry, appeared at the circumference of the InGaAlP SQW microdisks. Our results demonstrated that anisotropic radiation can be achieved by geometry shaping of the disks on the top view two-dimensional boundary slightly deformed from circular shape and/or on the side-view cross-section of the circular mesa by wet etching anisotropic undercut. Abstract:We demonstrate a chaotic microcavity laser whose quality is comparable to typical nonchaotic microcavity lasers, yet it has the unique characteristic of unidirectional output. The cavity shape is a disk with the boundary defined by a curve called limaccedilon of Pascal. For a lasing mode of volume less than 0.2 mu m(3), the measured quality factor is 23 000. The record-high quality and small modal volume result in extremely low-lasing threshold. The spontaneous emission coupling efficiency is approximately 6% and is the reported value for a chaotic microcavity laser. All the lasing modes have one output beam in the same direction with a divergence angle less than 40 degrees. This universal directionality is determined by the chaotic ray dynamics in the open cavity.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate fabrication of a spiral-shaped polymer microdisk cavity by femtosecond laser direct writing via two-photon polymerization of dye-doped resins. This spiral microresonator supports highly directional emission from the notch with a high-Q factor exceeding 1.6 x 10(3) and a low lasing threshold at room temperature. Our numerical simulation results reveal that clockwise propagating high-Q whispering gallery-like modes may couple to the counterclockwise modes and give the directional output. Benefiting from the low cost and good chemical compatibility of polymer materials, the fabrication of such spiral-shaped polymer microlasers with high-Q and unidirectional emission holds great potentials for use as elements of integrated organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: Integrated single-mode microlasers with ultra-narrow linewidths play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication and LIDAR to metrology and sensing. Generation of such light sources in a controllable and cost-effective manner remains an outstanding challenge due to the difficulties in the realization of ultra-high Q active micro-resonators with suppressed mode numbers. Here, we report a microlaser generated in an ultra-high Q Erbium doped lithium niobate (LN) micro-disk. Through the formation of coherently combined polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths, the microlaser exhibits single mode operation with an ultra-narrow-linewidth of 98 Hz. In combination with the superior electro-optic and nonlinear optical properties of LN crystal, the mass-producible on-chip single-mode microlaser will provide an essential building block for the photonic integrated circuits demanding high precision frequency control and reconfigurability.

Abstract:We demonstrate the lasing action from a dynamically localized mode in a microdisk resonator with rough boundary. Although substantial boundary roughness and surface defects in our devices imply strong light scattering and destroy the regular whispering gallery modes, the destructive interference of the scattered light leads to the dynamical Anderson localization in the phase space of the system and the formation of a different type of high-Q modes. Using direct optical imaging of the lasing mode and theoretical calculations, we show that the lasing modes in our devices has dynamical localization origin. This behavior, although demonstrated here in GaAs-InAs microdisk laser, should be applicable to any lasers and sensors based on semiconductor or polymer materials. Abstract:A drawback of high-quality modes in optical microdisks is their isotropic light emission characteristics. Here we report a novel, robust, and general mechanism that results in highly directional light emission from those modes. This surprising finding is explained by a combination of wave phenomena (wave localization along unstable periodic ray trajectories) and chaotic ray dynamics in open systems (escape along unstable manifolds). The emission properties originating in the chaotic ray dynamics permit directional light output even from microlasers operating in the common multi-mode regime. We demonstrate our novel mechanism for the limacon billiard family and find directional emission with narrow angular divergence for a significant range of geometries and material parameters.

Abstract:In microdisk cavities, whispering-gallery optical modes are confined by total internal reflection at the boundary of the disk. The small mode volumes and the ultralow losses of the modes offer a high potential for several applications, such as low-threshold lasing. The uniform in-plane light emission from an ideal disk with circular cross section, however, is a significant drawback. In this chapter we review the recent progress in microdisk design for unidirectional light emission from modes with low losses. We compare and discuss the pros and cons of various approaches. One important aspect is the ray-wave correspondence in such deformed microdisks.

Abstract:Nonspherical particles can uniquely probe soft system dynamics. We show that laser tweezers stably trap thin coinlike microdisks in 3D with an edge-on orientation. Scattered light forms a streak that we track using a fast camera to measure the disk's angular displacement. Linearly polarized tweezers rotationally trap a birefringent disk, and we measure its harmonically bound Brownian rotation over 5 decades in time. Near a surface, the disk exhibits a translational-orientational switchback oscillation. Circularly polarized tweezers rotate the disk and streak, yielding a colloidal lighthouse.

Abstract:High-Q deformed silica microsphere cavities are fabricated by short CO(2) laser pulses, where the deformation is well controlled by adjusting the intensity and number of pulses. Using this method, directional emission from whispering-gallery mode (WGM) with a high quality factor of 10(7) in these microspheres is achieved, and a transition from two-directional to single-directional emission is observed. Such concentrated directional emission and high-Q of WGMs show high potential for future studies of the chaotic ray dynamics in deformed microcavity and cavity quantum electrodynamics and optomechanics.

Abstract:Based on the directional emission effect of semiconductor deformed microcavities, the fabrication of deformed microcavities in isotropic thin films will provide a new solution for multifunctional and highly integrated photonic active chips. Because the Limacon shaped microcavity has become one of the important configurations of single-mode, low threshold on-chip lasers,the directional emission properties of microdisks fabricated in thin film is investigated. Taking the TE 20,1 mode existing in the Z-cut lithium niobate thin film microdisk as an example, according to two-dimensional wave optics theory, the mode distribution, quality factor Q , and directional emission factor D of microdisk variations with different deformation factors ε are respectively analyzed through using the wave optics module of COMSOL; Adopting classical scattering theory, Poincaré surface of sections under different deformation factors are simulated by optimizing the DynamicalBillards.jl library in Julia. In the simulation realized by Julia, 200 particle collisions are used 200 times to simulate 200 reflections of rays and finally obtain PSOS images. Simulation results reveal that when the azimuthal quantum number of the light wave mode remains unchanged, although the shape of the microdisk varies, the ratio of the resonant wavelength inside the microdisk to the circumference of the microdisk is approximately a constant,which can provide predictions for the microdisk size and resonant wavelength estimation of microcavities . The corresponding PSOS shows that when ε ,the entire region is covered by chaotic sea area, therefore ε of 0, 0.16, 0.24, 0.28, 0.45 are selected to simulate the TE 20,1 mode distribution, far-field radiation flux angle distribution, and PSOS. Theoretical simulation results show that when the deformation factor is greater than 0.24, the microdisk has good unidirectional lasing properties, with a Q factor greater than 10 5 ; When the deformation factor is greater than 0.4, the PSOS is almost occupied by the chaotic sea area, with a Q factor below 10 3 . Therefore, when the deformation factor of the Limacon microdisk in the thin film can be chosen between 0.24 and 0.4, under which circumstance the microdisk not only carries high quality factor (about 10 3 -10 5 ), but also forms high laser directionality (about 6.45-8.32). The theoretical simulation results will provide a certain theoretical reference for the experimental research of thin film deformation microcavities.

Abstract:We report single-mode lasing in subwavelength GaAs disks under optical pumping. The disks are fabricated by standard photolithography and two steps of wet chemical etching. The simple fabrication method can produce submicron disks with good circularity, smooth boundary and vertical sidewalls. The smallest lasing disks have a diameter of 627 nm and thickness of 265 nm. The ratio of the disk diameter to the vacuum lasing wavelength is about 0.7. Our numerical simulations confirm that the lasing modes are whispering-gallery modes with the azimuthal number as small as 4 and very small mode volume.
