Abstract:Quantum teleportation is one of the most important protocols in quantum information. By exploiting the physical resource of entanglement, quantum teleportation serves as a key primitive in a variety of quantum information tasks and represents an important building block for quantum technologies, with a pivotal role in the continuing progress of quantum communication, quantum computing and quantum networks. Here we review the basic theoretical ideas behind quantum teleportation and its variant protocols. We focus on the main experiments, together with the technical advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of the various technologies, from photonic qubits and optical modes to atomic ensembles, trapped atoms, and solid-state systems. Analysing the current state-of-the-art, we finish by discussing open issues, challenges and potential future implementations.

Abstract:Thirty years after it was first proposed, quantum teleportation remains one of the most important protocols in quantum information and quantum technologies, enabling the nonlocal transmission of an unknown quantum state. Quantum teleportation can be used to overcome the distance limitation in directly transferring quantum states in quantum communication and the difficulty in realizing long-range interactions among qubits in quantum computation. Since 2015, experimental quantum teleportation has moved from simple to complex quantum states (multiple degrees of freedom, high-dimensional quantum states) and from proof-of-principle demonstrations to real-world applications. We overview these advances, in particular, the understanding of the nonclassical nature of quantum teleportation, the teleportation of complex quantum states, progress in experiments with photons, atoms and solid-state systems and applications to quantum communication and computation, and discuss the challenges and opportunities for future developments.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation is a core protocol in quantum information science. Besides revealing the fascinating feature of quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation provides an ultimate way to distribute quantum state over extremely long distance, which is crucial for global quantum communication and future quantum networks. In this review, we focus on the long distance quantum teleportation experiments, especially those employing photonic qubits. Abstract:Quantum teleportation(1) is central to quantum communication, and plays an important role in a number of quantum computation protocols(2,3). Most information-processing applications of quantum teleportation include the subsequent manipulation of the qubit (the teleported photon), so it is highly desirable to have a teleportation procedure resulting in high-quality, freely flying qubits. In our previous teleportation experiment(4), the teleported qubit had to be detected (and thus destroyed) to verify the success of the procedure. Here we report a teleportation experiment that results in freely propagating individual qubits. The basic idea is to suppress unwanted coincidence detection events by providing the photon to be teleported much less frequently than the auxiliary entangled pair. Therefore, a case of successful teleportation can be identified with high probability without the need actually to detect the teleported photon. The experimental fidelity of our procedure surpasses the theoretical limit required for the implementation of quantum repeaters(5,6).

Abstract:Abstract Quantum communication has made great breakthroughs in recent years. Because of its characteristics for strict information security transmission and high speed, it has received attention from related research fields around the world. This paper briefly reviews the progress in the field of quantum computing and communication. The basic functions of quantum mechanics related to the quantum communication are first introduced, including qubit, logic gates, postulates, polarization and quantum entanglement. Then the applications of quantum communication are discussed including teleportation, cryptography and quantum networks. Finally, advantages and disadvantages for the current applications are analyzed and the challenges remained in the current research are demonstrated.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation 1 is central to the practical realization of quantum communication 2 , 3 . Although the first proof-of-principle demonstration was reported in 1997 by the Innsbruck 4 and Rome groups 5 , long-distance teleportation has so far only been realized in fibre with lengths of hundreds of metres 6 , 7 . An optical free-space link is highly desirable for extending the transfer distance, because of its low atmospheric absorption for certain ranges of wavelength. By following the Rome scheme 5 , which allows a full Bell-state measurement, we report free-space implementation of quantum teleportation over 16 km. An active feed-forward technique has been developed to enable real-time information transfer. An average fidelity of 89%, well beyond the classical limit of 2/3, is achieved. Our experiment has realized all of the non-local aspects of the original teleportation scheme and is equivalent to it up to a local unitary operation 5 . Our result confirms the feasibility of space-based experiments, and is an important step towards quantum-communication applications on a global scale.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation scheme is undoubtedly an inspiring theoretical discovery as an amazing application of quantum physics,which was experimentally realized several years later.For the purpose of quantum commu-nication via this scheme,an entangled ancillary pair shared by Alice and Bob is the essential ingredient,and a quantum memory in Bob's system is necessary for him to keep the quantum state until the classical message from Alice arrives.Yet,the quantum memory remains a challenge in both technology and rationale.Here we show that quantum teleportation provides fresh perspectives in terms of an alternative scheme for global positioning system.Referring to fixed locations of Bob and Charlie,Alice can determine her relative position by comparing quantum states before and after teleporting around via Bob and Charlie successively.This may open up a new scene in the stage of the application of quantum physics without quantum memories.

Abstract:Very recently we have witnessed a new development of quantum information, the so-called continuous variable (CV) quantum information theory. Such a further development has been mainly due to the experimental and theoretical advantages offered by CV systems, i.e., quantum systems described by a set of observables, like position and momentum, which have a continuous spectrum of eigenvalues. According to this novel trend, quantum information protocols like quantum teleportation have been suitably extended to the CV framework. Here, we briefly review some mathematical tools relative to CV systems and we consequently develop the concepts of quantum entanglement and teleportation in the CV framework, by analogy with the qubit-based approach. Some connections between teleportation fidelity and entanglement properties of the underlying quantum channel are inspected. Next, we face the study of CV quantum teleportation networks where more users share a multipartite state and an arbitrary pair of them performs quantum teleportation. In this context, we show alternative protocols and we investigate the optimal strategy that maximizes the performance of the network.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation is a fundamental concept in quantum physics which now finds important applications at the heart of quantum technology including quantum relays, quantum repeaters and linear optics quantum computing (LOQC). Photonic implementations have largely focussed on achieving long distance teleportation due to its suitability for decoherence-free communication. Teleportation also plays a vital role in the scalability of photonic quantum computing, for which large linear optical networks will likely require an integrated architecture. Here we report the first demonstration of quantum teleportation in which all key parts - entanglement preparation, Bell-state analysis and quantum state tomography - are performed on a reconfigurable integrated photonic chip. We also show that a novel element-wise characterisation method is critical to mitigate component errors, a key technique which will become increasingly important as integrated circuits reach higher complexities necessary for quantum enhanced operation.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation 1 , a way to transfer the state of a quantum system from one location to another, is central to quantum communication 2 and plays an important role in a number of quantum computation protocols 3 , 4 , 5 . Previous experimental demonstrations have been implemented with single photonic 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 or ionic qubits 12 , 13 . However, teleportation of single qubits is insufficient for a large-scale realization of quantum communication and computation 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 . Here, we present the experimental realization of quantum teleportation of a two-qubit composite system. In the experiment, we develop and exploit a six-photon interferometer to teleport an arbitrary polarization state of two photons. The observed teleportation fidelities for different initial states are all well beyond the state estimation limit of 0.40 for a two-qubit system 14 . Not only does our six-photon interferometer provide an important step towards teleportation of a complex system, it will also enable future experimental investigations on a number of fundamental quantum communication and computation protocols 3 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 .

Abstract:For many decades since its inception in the early twentieth century, quantum mechanics seemed to be an exotic and peculiarly non-intuitive kind of physics that applied to matter at the smallest scales: the laws that govern atoms, photons and subatomic particles. All our engineering, meanwhile, was dominated by the familiar rules of classical physics, in which objects have definite positions, trajectories and properties. But, in the past several decades, scientists have started to harness quantum rules in practical technologies. In 1985, the physicist Richard Feynman suggested that computers governed by quantum rules might be capable of computations beyond the means of classical ones like those in use today. At much the same time, other researchers showed that information encoded in quantum states could be transmitted between a sender and receiver using a kind of encryption that could not be intercepted and read without that being detected. Quantum computers and quantum cryptography have now become central components of a real-world quantum-information technology that may soon find scientific, industrial and social uses. These applications could be increasingly enabled by a global information network with quantum capability: a quantum internet. China is at the forefront of that enterprise, and one of the scientific leaders in this effort is Jian-Wei Pan of the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei. Pan studied for his PhD with quantum-information pioneer Anton Zeilinger in Vienna before returning to China to implement these nascent technologies. In 2012, he won the International Quantum Communication Award and, in 2017, he was included in Nature's annual list of the 'ten people who mattered in science' over the past year. That July, he and his colleagues reported 'quantum teleportation' of photons from a ground-based station to a satellite 1400 km away. NSR recently interviewed Professor Pan about the current achievements and future prospects for quantum-information technologies.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation provides a way to transmit unknown quantum states from one location to another. In the quantum world, multilevel systems which enable high-dimensional systems are more prevalent. Therefore, to completely rebuild the quantum states of a single particle remotely, one needs to teleport multilevel (high-dimensional) states. Here, we demonstrate the teleportation of high-dimensional states in a three-dimensional six-photon system. We exploit the spatial mode of a single photon as the high-dimensional system, use two auxiliary entangled photons to realize a deterministic three-dimensional Bell state measurement. The fidelity of teleportation process matrix is F=0.596±0.037. Through this process matrix, we can prove that our teleportation is both nonclassical and genuine three dimensional. Our work paves the way to rebuild complex quantum systems remotely and to construct complex quantum networks.

Abstract:The quantum internet will give us an infrastructure able to distribute and process quantum information on a planetary scale. The core of that internet will be formed from quantum error corrected links able to distribute information over large distances all while maintaining their coherence for long periods of time. However, many of the applications at the edge of such networks may rely on raw unencoded data – not protected by error correcting codes due to the nature of how it was generated. In this presentation, we will describe an experiment in which quantum information encoded on a physical qubit can be teleported into an error-corrected logical qubit. Our demonstration shows how one can get information into and out of quantum processors and tomorrows large-scale quantum networks.

Abstract:Open quantum systems and study of decoherence are important for our fundamental understanding of quantum physical phenomena. For practical purposes, there exists a large number of quantum protocols exploiting quantum resources, e.g. entanglement, which allows to go beyond what is possible to achieve by classical means. We combine concepts from open quantum systems and quantum information science, and give a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration -- with teleportation -- that it is possible to implement efficiently a quantum protocol via non-Markovian open system. The results show that, at the time of implementation of the protocol, it is not necessary to have the quantum resource in the degree of freedom used for the basic protocol -- as long as there exists some other degree of freedom, or environment of an open system, which contains useful resources. The experiment is based on a pair of photons, where their polarizations act as open system qubits and frequencies as their environments -- while the path degree of freedom of one of the photons represents the state of Alice's qubit to be teleported to Bob's polarization qubit.
