Abstract:CaCO3 is a typical biomineral found well arranged in organisms. A CaCO3 hierarchical architecture with a nacre-like structure has been synthesized by a solution reaction process in the presence of amine molecules. The architecture is composed of crystalline calcite nanolamellas similar to the structure of natural nacres induced by low molecular weight organic compounds in aqueous solution. The calcium carbonate platy units with a size of ca. 100 nm are arranged in 2-dimensions forming layers. The layers are tightly stacked on each other forming 3-dimensional regular architectures with a size on micrometer scale. The calcium carbonate platy nanocrystals are of single crystalline structure with the (110) basal plane. A formation mechanism of such nanolamellas is proposed on the basis of stereochemical complementarity by selective adsorption of organic molecules and the epitaxial growth of CaCO3 platy nanocrystals, which leads to the crystal growth and induce stacking in 3-dimensions to form hierarchical architectures.
