Abstract:Pollution levels, spatial distributions and main sources of 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments collected from Jinzhou Bay in August of 2009 were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results showed that the total PAHs concentrations ranged from 133.44 ng/g to 593.91 ng/g with a mean value of 262.15 ng/g. Concentrations in this coastal area were relatively higher than outer sea, and the highest content of PAHs was found in the estuary of the Wuli River. The content of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) ranged from 0.19% to 0.85%. A good liner correlation between PAHs and TOC (r=0.687, p<0.01) suggested TOC played an important role in controlling the PAHs level. Concerning the compositions of parent PAHs, 4∼6 rings PAHs were the dominant species in sediment samples, accounting for 52.35% ∼ 64.93% of ςPAHs, 2∼3 ring PAHs were relatively lower (35.07%∼ 47.65%). Analysis of isomeric ratios reflected a mixed pattern of pyrolytic inputs of PAHs in Jinzhou Bay. As to the risk assessment results, all compounds were lower than the ERL, except Fle in station N9, indicating that Jinzhou Bay had little potential adverse life impact.
