Abstract:Most people spend more than 80% of their time indoors; thus, indoor air pollution has a significant influence on an individual's exposure to air pollution. In this study, PM2.5 concentrations in both indoor and outdoor air were simultaneously measured in urban residences in Nanjing, China. The measurements were carried out using MicroPEM personal exposure monitors during summer, winter and transition seasons from March 2016 to February 2017. Information on building characteristics, occupants' activities and socioeconomic status (SES) variables was obtained through questionnaires during the sampling period. Significant seasonal variations in indoor and outdoor PM2.5 levels were observed in this study, with the highest PM2.5 concentration in winter and the lowest in summer. The correlation between indoor and outdoor PM2.5 concentrations in transition seasons was higher than that in winter and summer. Linear regression models were fitted to log-transformed indoor PM2.5 concentrations to determine potential influencing factors. Outdoor PM2.5 was found to be the major source of residential indoor PM2.5 pollution. The household activity of cooking was an indoor determinant of PM2.5 concentrations in homes with open-plan kitchens or when the kitchen door was open during cooking. More frequent building ventilation could increase indoor exposure to outdoor PM2.5 in transition seasons and winter or when the outdoor air quality is poor. SES variables such as dwelling ownership and household income were associated with indoor PM2.5 concentrations.

Abstract:Eighteen dormitories, naturally ventilated, in a certain university in China were chosen for investigation of indoor air quality and the relationship of indoor and outdoor air quality in the fall. Parameters, such as temperature, relative humidity (RH), air velocity, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) particulate matters (PM1, PM2.5, PM10, TSP), and TVOC were monitored at indoors and outdoors intermittently. Indoor CO concentrations of the most dormitories were lower for no indoor sources. Indoor CO2 concentrations often exceeded 1000ppm in the condition of the doors and window closed indicating inadequate ventilation. Indoor particulate matters concentrations were affected by outdoor vehicle emission. The indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratio of CO and particles were less than 1 generally, and the I/O ratio Of CO2 and TVOC were higher than 1 generally.

Abstract:To understand the present situation of indoor air quality in commercial buildings, physical measurements and questionnaire investigations were carried out in Beijing. Results show that air temperature and humidity should be given more attention, although most of the contaminant concentration standards are not exceeded. The measurement results are reflected in the questionnaire, but there do exist some deviation. As to the design and operation of HVAC systems, unreasonable indoor district separation causes bad fresh air distribution, and air humidification should not be ignored in transition seasons in North China.
A Preliminary Study on Indoor Air Pollution in Three Districts of Beijing

Abstract:Objective To understand the indoor air pollution in Beijing. Methods Based on the data from epi-demiological investigation and air pollution monitoring, the investigation was carried out by choosing 3 districts in Beijing including Dongcheng, Shijingshan and Haidian during Jan-Mar in 2000. 70 houses were selected in each district randomly by cluster sampling, the indoor concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and SO2 in bedroom and kitchen were monitored. The data on concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and SO2, and the environmental conditions of each sampling place were all recorded in the unified questionaires. Results The total average concentrations of pollutants in indoor air of 3 districts were 0. 555 mg/m3 for PM10 and 0. 512 mg/m3 for PM2.5 respectively. The total average concentration of 0.052 mg/ m3 for SO2 was below the ralated National Stardard. The concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 in the bedrooms and kitchens in each district all exceeded the related national standards, and revealed no significant differences between bedrooms and kitchens. The SO2 levels in kitchens in Dongcheng District and Haidian District were significantly higher than those in bedrooms(P 0. 05), and also exceeded the related National Standards. Conclusion The indoor air pollution by PM10 and PM2.5 in observed residences had hazardous effects on the residents' health at a certain degree in winter of Beijing.

Abstract:Indoor air quality (IAQ) has been concerned since 1970s in some western countries. Many researchers have studied the effects of air pollution on children's health and evidence suggested that it did contribute significantly to the risk of adverse health in children. Children spend the majority of their time indoors, mostly at home. To study health effects of long-term exposure to indoor air, we conducted a questionnaire survey about indoor environment and children's health status in 2012 on the 4-5 grades children of a primary school in Beijing. The questionnaire was used to collect data on general information of children, living environment, residential equipments and lifestyle and children's health status. We classified the investigated families into several categories according to residential surrounding air pollution, decoration and smoking. Then we observed respiratory symptoms like cough, dyspnea with phlegm, nasal obstruction, asthma and some allergy symptoms in different categories. The results of this survey suggest that indoor air quality is associated with children's health. Morbidity of children's respiratory system symptoms and some allergy symptoms is higher in relatively poor indoor environment.

Abstract:This study investigated the indoor air environment of office buildings in different climate zones of China, including the indoor air pollutant concentrations, and its associated interactions with the staffs' feelings and health symptoms, which could provide basis to improve the indoor environments of office buildings. Thermal parameters and pollutant (including CO2, formaldehyde and TVOC) concentrations were monitored in different floors of sampled office buildings. Questionnaire were also surveyed to investigate humans' perception to the indoor air quality and the associated sick building syndrome. Furthermore, cancer risk assessments of these office buildings were carried out based on onsite air pollutants data. The results showed that indoor and outdoor pollutant concentrations are highly correlated, and the pollutants concentration levels vary over the time of the day, with poor indoor conditions observed in the morning and the afternoon. The questionnaire results suggested that actions should be taken to improve the indoor air environment of office buildings, and ventilation appears to be the most desirable strategy. The risk assessment results showed that health problems could exist even though the pollutant concentration levels in the indoor environment were within the standard limits. This paper investigated the discomfort reasons in the office buildings by providing pollutant concentrations and health risk assessment data together with information about the human's perception on the indoor environment. Finally, we noted that outdoor fresh air with purifiers/filters should be used to reduce the indoor pollutant concentrations.

Abstract:Indoor air quality (IAQ) has a significant impact on human health and comfort. The impact of indoor microorganisms on IAQ has recently been taken into account. However, microbial contamination of microapartments in developed coastal cities, where microorganisms tend to breed, has rarely been investigated. Therefore, this study evaluated the IAQ of two microapartments in Shenzhen in spring, summer, and winter and conducted a questionnaire-based survey and pollution measurement on the residents of the microapartments to analyze the differences in their subjective evaluation. During the period of study, 863 answers to questionnaires were collected, including 403 in spring, 238 in winter, and 222 in summer. The IAQ of microapartments was evaluated and analyzed. It was found that indoor mold breeding was serious, and the air quality was poor. Through gene sequencing analysis, it was concluded that air conditioning was the main source of indoor microbial pollution, and the indoor area with high humidity was the main site of microbial aggregation. In addition, the types of indoor microorganisms were also correlated with seasons. The results of this study can promote the betterment of air quality to improve the comfort of residents.

Abstract:Average exposures to SO2, NO2, CO2, CO, Inhalable Particles (IP), common bacteria and streptococci were monitored in 1986 in 24 new and old village households in the northern suburb of Beijing. Four hundred and fifty school children were also measured and observed for chronic and acute respiratory symptoms and illnesses, pulmonary function, immune response, carboxyhemoglobin level and eye response time to signals so as to evaluate the effects of rural indoor air pollution on human health. The results of air monitoring data showed that the new heating systems were effective in reducing the indoor concentrations of the measured pollutants by 23 to 76% in winter, but present concentrations still exceed China's Standard because of inadequate house design. Health outcomes suggested that children in the new village demonstrated signs of improvement for better health. The implications of different factors affecting indoor air pollution are evaluated and discussed.

Abstract:Indoor air pollutants were monitored in 138 households in urban Xi'an that were recently decorated, and the concentrations of formaldehyde, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), amines, benzene, methylbenzol, xylene, and radon were monitored in the bedrooms, sitting rooms, dinning rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and studies of the houses. The most seriously elevated pollutants were TVOC and formaldehyde, whose rates exceeded standards by 69.8% and 60.8%, respectively. Ammonia was 13.2% above the standard, and xylene was 8.7% above the standard. The level of radon in 100% of the rooms was below the standard. Only for formaldehyde were there statistically significant differences in concentrations in the sitting room, bedroom, and study (P < 0.05). Concentrations of TVOC, amines, and xylene were positively related to the concentration of formaldehyde in the same room. The concentrations of the major pollutants in summer were highest and had a statistically significant difference with those in other seasons. TVOC and formaldehyde were the most serious pollutants indoors after decorating in an urban area of Xi'an. The concentrations of formaldehyde in the sitting rooms were different than in other types of rooms. Formaldehyde can be a representative of the levels of pollutants indoors; rooms with a higher concentration of formaldehyde tend to have higher levels of other pollutants. In addition, pollutants in the decorated rooms have a strong positive dependence on the monitoring seasons. Summer was the peak time of indoor pollutant levels. Households should pay extra attention to ventilation and take other effective measures to avoid health problems caused by indoor air pollutants.

Abstract:Because people spend most of their time indoors, the characterization of indoor air quality is important for exposure assessment. Unfortunately, indoor air data are scarce, leading to a major data gap in risk assessment. In this study, PM2.5 concentrations in both indoor and outdoor air were simultaneously measured using on-line particulate counters in 13 households in Haidian, Beijing for both heating and non-heating seasons. A bimodal distribution of PM2.5 concentrations suggests rapid transitions between polluted and non-polluted situations. The PM2.5 concentrations in indoor and outdoor air varied synchronously, with the indoor variation lagging. The lag time in the heating season was longer than that in the non-heating season. The particle sizes in indoor air were smaller than those in ambient air in the heating season and vice versa in the non-heating season. PM2.5 concentrations in indoor air were generally lower than those in ambient air except when ambient concentrations dropped sharply to very low levels or there were internal emissions from cooking or other activities. The effectiveness of an air cleaner to reduce indoor PM2.5 concentrations was demonstrated. Non-linear regression models were developed to predict indoor air PM2.5 concentrations based on ambient data with lag time incorporated. The models were applied to estimate the overall population exposure to PM2.5 and the health consequences in Haidian. The health impacts would be significantly overestimated without the indoor exposure being taken into consideration, and this bias would increase as the ambient air quality improved in the future.

Abstract:Because humans spend much of their time in indoor microenvironments, the air quality indoors has attracted significant attention. This study simultaneously conducted real-time indoor observations and comprehensive outdoor measurements of O-3, CO and PM2.5 in suburban Nanjing in eastern China from September to December 2018. The O-3, CO and PM2.5 exhibited median indoor concentrations of 3.2 ppb, 395.8 ppb and 17.3 mu g m(-3), respectively, based on measurements in a room with closed windows and relatively regular daily indoor human activity, and median outdoor values of 30.5 ppb, 386.1 ppb and 37.2 mu g m-3, resulting in median indoor-outdoor (I/O) ratios of 0.14, 1.01 and 0.46. Moreover, the indoor concentrations traced the outdoor variations with correlations of approximately 0.68, 0.82 and 0.82 for the O-3, CO and PM2.5, respectively. During pollution episodes, the indoor O-3 and PM2.5 concentrations reached about 30 ppb and 130 mu g m(-3), respectively. Both meteorological conditions (e.g., wind speed or relative humidity) and human activity indoors influenced the relationships between the indoor and outdoor concentrations, including the I/O ratios and time lag. A simplified indoor-outdoor massbalance equation was developed to simulate the indoor concentrations, and the predictions fitted the observed data for most of the testing period, especially after considering the human activity indoors and limited penetration of particles. This study enhances our understanding of the indoor-outdoor relationships for gaseous and particulate matter concentrations in polluted areas such as the Yangtze River Delta and highlights the urgent need for improving indoor air quality in the megacities of China.
Indoor air quality analysis of residential buildings in northeast China based on field measurements and longtime monitoring

Abstract:Outdoor air contamination was frequently observed and focused in northeast China in winter when severe cold days are common and understanding dynamic characteristics of indoor air quality in this area is essential for occupants' ventilation strategies. Herein, using spectrophotometric method, GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer) method, TSI DustTrak particle tester and Telaire 7001 CO2 tester, we investigated the concentration change of formaldehyde (HCHO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PM2.5 and CO2 of 21 houses for 4 seasons under 2 conditions (airtight and natural ventilation). Moreover, 6 houses were selected to install convenient sensors for longtime monitoring. Outdoor temperature, concentration of PM2.5, residents' opening window behavior, indoor infiltration rate, temperature, relative humidity and the furniture surface area were also recorded for comparison and correlation analysis. According to the detected results, worst indoor conditions were revealed that average concentrations of HCHO (autumn), TVOC (summer), PM2.5 (winter) and CO2 (winter) were 0.094 mg/m3, 0.924 mg/m3, 0.073 mg/m3, and 883 ppm, respectively. Indoor concentration of PM2.5, TVOC and CO2 exceeded the standard limit and they changed with seasonal characteristics. The observed 4 factors have different effects on indoor air quality. Based on this research, it is recommended that outdoor condition be considered while opening and closing window in winter and ventilation be strengthened in summer.

Abstract:In this study, the indoor air quality (IAQ) was investigated in a subway station with fully enclosed platform screen doors in Beijing, China. Eight indoor air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), NH3 (ammonia), CO (carbon monoxide), CH2O (formaldehyde) and TVOC (total volatile organic compound), were measured for six consecutive days in October 2019. The results indicated that the IAQ in the subway station was basically stable at good levels for most times during the whole measurement period. All eight indoor air pollutants were far below their corresponding maximum allowable concentrations, except for the PM2.5 concentrations, which occasionally exceeded the concentration limits. The concentrations of indoor air pollutants in the subway station were basically within the corresponding standards. The correlation analyses showed that outdoor air pollutants have important influences on indoor air pollutants. The concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2 and CO in the subway station were positively correlated with their corresponding outdoor concentrations. PM10 was statistically significantly correlated with the passenger flow and train frequency, but the other air pollutants were less impacted by the passenger flow and train frequency.

Abstract:There has been an increased concern on indoor air quality (IAQ) in residences since the majority of individuals' time is mainly spent indoors. We inspected and measured indoor environmental parameters in 399 homes in northeast China in order to study IAQ. We systematically measured multilevel environmental parameters (physical, chemical, and biological) in children's bedrooms during all seasons. The results indicated that the median values for indoor temperature, relative humidity, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and formaldehyde concentrations throughout the year were within the Chinese national standards. However, the median carbon dioxide concentrations exceeded 1000 ppm during spring, autumn, and winter. In the same seasons, the air change rate (ACR) was below the minimum required level of 0.5 h −1 . Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were predominantly detected in settled dust, displaying median concentrations of 126.9, 41.5, and 16.3 μg/g, respectively. Notably, phthalate concentrations were significantly higher in urban houses as compared to rural houses. Furthermore, median concentrations of Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f) and endotoxin were 689.4 ng/g and 3689.1 EU/g, respectively, trending higher in winter than summer. There was a negative correlation between ACR and chemical pollutants (TVOC, formaldehyde, and DiBP). In conclusion, northeast Chinese homes had poor indoor air quality with ubiquitous exposure to modern chemical compounds and insufficient ventilation.

Characterizing the Indoor-Outdoor Relationship of Fine Particulate Matter in Non-Heating Season for Urban Residences in Beijing

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution is currently a major public health concern in Chinese urban areas. However, PM2.5 exposure primarily occurs indoors. Given such, we conducted this study to characterize the indoor-outdoor relationship of PM2.5 mass concentrations for urban residences in Beijing.METHODS: In this study, 24-h real-time indoor and ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations were concurrently collected for 41 urban residences in the non-heating season. The diurnal variation of pollutant concentrations was characterized. Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the correlation between indoor and ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations. Regression analysis with ordinary least square was employed to characterize the influences of a variety of factors on PM2.5 mass concentration.RESULTS: Hourly ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations were 3-280 μg/m3 with a median of 58 μg/m3, and hourly indoor counterpart were 4-193 μg/m3 with a median of 34 μg/m3. The median indoor/ambient ratio of PM2.5 mass concentration was 0.62. The diurnal variation of residential indoor and ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations tracked with each other well. Strong correlation was found between indoor and ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations on the community basis (coefficients: r ≥ 0.90, p < 0.0001), and the ambient data explained ≥ 84% variance of the indoor data. Regression analysis suggested that the variables, such as traffic conditions, indoor smoking activities, indoor cleaning activities, indoor plants and number of occupants, had significant influences on the indoor PM2.5 mass concentrations.CONCLUSIONS: PM2.5 of ambient origin made dominant contribution to residential indoor PM2.5 exposure in the non-heating season under the high ambient fine particle pollution condition. Nonetheless, the large inter-residence variability of infiltration factor of ambient PM2.5 raised the concern of exposure misclassification when using ambient PM2.5 mass concentrations as exposure surrogates. PM2.5 of indoor origin still had minor influence on indoor PM2.5 mass concentrations, particularly at 11:00-13:00 and 22:00-0:00. The predictive models suggested that particles from traffic emission, secondary aerosols, particles from indoor smoking, resuspended particles due to indoor cleaning and particles related to indoor plants contributed to indoor PM2.5 mass concentrations in this study. Real-time ventilation measurements and improvement of questionnaire design to involve more variables subject to built environment were recommended to enhance the performance of the predictive models.

[Measurement Analysis and Superposed Effect of Residential Indoor Air Pollutants in Xi'an].

Abstract:To understand the levels of indoor air pollution and protect public health, our research group conducted monitoring of the concentrations of indoor pollutants (formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), n-butyl acetate, ethylbenzene, styrene, and undecane) and a health effect assessment for 830 households of Xi'an City from December 2017 to December 2020. Simultaneously, the superposed effect of pollutants was analyzed. The results showed that the exceedance rates of formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, TVOC, and xylene were 92.1%, 39.7%, 11.7%, 8.9%, and 1.2% respectively, among which formaldehyde was the most serious pollutant. There was no significant difference in pollutant concentration and exceedance among different room types. The concentration of pollutants was the highest in summer due to the influence of temperature, humidity, and other factors. The results of the human health risk assessment showed that there were carcinogenic risks of formaldehyde and benzene for different age groups (children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly); children and the elderly were more at risk, whereas xylene, ethylbenzene, and toluene were at low risk (HI<1). The superposed effect of pollutants showed that superposition between indoor pollutants did exist, resulting in the obvious increase in pollutant toxicity. This study provides data reference and scientific basis for the characteristics and healthy effects of indoor residential pollutants in Xi'an City.
The Current Status and Influence Factors of Indoor Air Pollution in Urban Area in Beijing

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status of the indoor air pollution in urban area in Beijing and find the influence factors for the concentrations of formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides (NOx) indoors. Methods 463 persons were chosen randomly from Xicheng district of Beijing to complete the questionnaires about their indoor environment condition. The levels of formaldehyde and NOx were monitored in the bedrooms and the kitchens of 91 households. And we used the multi-regression model to find out some influence factors that related to formaldehyde and NOx concentration. Results The average daily concentration of formaldehyde in the bedrooms was about 0.049 mg/m3 and the rate of excess standard was 13%. The formaldehyde pollution in the decorated rooms (0.058 mg/m3) was more serious than that in the control rooms (0.034 mg/m3) and there was statistically significant difference between them (P0.001). The average concentration of NOx in the bedrooms and in the kitchens was 0.053 mg/m3 and 0.090 mg/m3 respectively and the rate of excess standard was 9%and 48% respectively. There was statistically significant difference between the concentration of NOx in bedrooms and kitchens (P0.001). Decoration, monthly natural gas consumption and exhaust channel were selected into the regression equation of bedroom formaldehyde; net height of house and smoking were selected into the regression equation of bedroom NOx; floor space, net height of house and frequency of cooking were selected into the regression equation of kitchen NOx. Conclusion The formaldehyde and NOx pollution in the indoor is very serious in the concerned area in Beijing. The decoration of house is the most important factor for the indoor formaldehyde concentration. Natural gas for cooking is the primary source of NOx in kitchens and is also one of the important sources of formaldehyde in bedrooms. Smoking is one of the main sources of NOx in bedrooms.
Indoors Air Pollution and Respiratory Health of the Peoples in Beijing: A Community-Based Pilot Study

Abstract:The air quality in Beijing and associated health effects have been of some concern to the world for many years. Chinese researchers have undertaken a series of studies related to health effects. Evidence suggests that the air quality has improved vastly in recent years. The annual levels of ambient SO2, NO2 and PM10 were 36, 49 and 122 mcg/m3 in 2008, respectively, showing a 43.8%, 30.9% and 26.1% reduction in the 2001 levels. A 10 µg/m3 decrease in ambient SO2 and PM10 has resulted in the daily cardiovascular death rate being reduced by 0.71% (0.13%∼1.31%) and 0.35% (0.13%∼0.57%). This implies that the measures implemented to control air pollution have been successful. The health of Beijing’s urban residents has benefited.

Abstract:Indoor and Built Environment, Ahead of Print. This study utilized a questionnaire survey to collect data from 265 residents in Changchun, encompassing building characteristics, ventilation frequency and overall satisfaction with the indoor environment. Statistical analysis revealed significant disparities in ventilation frequency and satisfaction with indoor temperature. The survey results indicate that the primary mode of indoor air exchange amongst Changchun residents is window ventilation, accounting for 93%. Field tracking was conducted to measure indoor air concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in residential buildings during winter and summer seasons. The study revealed a significant increase in the average indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratio of the targeted 25 VOC concentrations in winter, rising from 10.8 to 17.7. The findings underscore indoor sources as predominant contributors to the measured VOCs. Temperature, humidity and room functions are the main factors affecting VOC concentration. Higher temperatures and increased relative humidity both contributed to elevated indoor VOC levels. This study recommended the opening of more windows during high temperature and high humidity in summer, to maintain good indoor air quality and effectively age the emission of VOCs from furniture. This study contributes to the enhancement of the database on indoor air quality and effective ventilation strategies in cold regions for safeguarding public health.
