This study seeks to determine characteristics of aerosol mass concentration (AMC) and discuss the influence of local meteorological parameters including wind direction, wind speed, rainfall and rain frequency on the AMC in a rural region of southeast China. For this, six particulate samples per month were collected onto glass fiber filters and 24h meteorological parameters per day were recorded with an automatic weather station (VSALA-M52, Finland) at the Red Soil Ecological Experiment Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences (RSES) during 2005-2006. The monthly mean concentrations varied from 6.64 μg m 3 (March 2006) to 238.75 μg m-3 (February 2005), with two peak hours and one valley hour every study year. The first peak hour was during the two months (January, February) and the other during the two months (October, November). The valley hour was in the four months of April to July 2005 and March to June 2006, respectively. Seasonal mean±SD for AMC were from 14.91±7.56 to 195.00±51.34μg m-3, showed a pronounced seasonal pattern, with a maximum observed during autumn-winter. AMC had positively significant-marked correlations with N-NE winds (n=24, p<;0.01) from aerosol main sources such as the Yingtan Industrial Park (YIP), the Guixi Coal-Burning Power Plant (GCBPP) and the national NO.320 road and negatively marked relations (n=24, p<;0.05) with S-W winds where located large areas of farmlands and the Honghu lake. Both wind speed and rain- all had relatively marked anticorrelates with AMC (n=24, p=0.0502<;0.10; p=0.054<;0.10).
