Abstract:A modified perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is presented to improve maximum power point tracking (MPPT) performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. This modified algorithm is applied to a single-phase PV system based on deadbeat control in order to test the tracking accuracy and its impact on the reliability of the whole system. Both simulations and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm offers a fast response as well as smaller steady-state oscillations even under low irradiance condition compared with classical methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel solution to the equivalent resistances of a photovoltaic (PV) cell was developed. The simulation model of a PV array is established using a matlab/s-function. In addition, popular MPPT algorithms for PV systems-perturb and observe algorithm (P&O) and incremental conductance algorithm (INC) are investigated. A modified P&O algorithm is proposed for the improvement of P&O algorithm. Both simulation results and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the model of PV array and the advantages of the proposed P&O MPPT algorithm.

Abstract:The perturb & observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is widely used in photovoltaic (PV) systems due to its simplicity and reliability. To optimize the performance, a tradeoff between static and dynamic efficiencies should be made. Yet, present design methods are not efficient enough for practical use. As for the prior-art calculation-based methods, they only focus on the problem of direction confusion under dynamic conditions, while the static efficiency will be low. Although the experience-based methods consider both static and dynamic efficiencies, they cannot give a clear result, and the parameters still need to be set in a trial-and-error process. As such, in this paper, an analytical model is established based on the operation principles to provide clear characteristics of key indices (i.e., static and dynamic efficiencies, and the requirement of the DC voltage range), and the impact of parameters on the efficiency is revealed. Subsequently, a robust design is proposed for the optimum design, which can set the key parameters, achieving relatively high tracking accuracy. Finally, simulations and experimental tests are performed, verifying the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed design.

Abstract:To improve the tracking accuracy of the maximum power point of photovoltaic cells can improve the operational efficiency of photovoltaic power generation system and reduce the cost of photovoltaic electricity. Because the common perturbation and observation (P&O) runs at a low speed, this paper proposes a new dual-mode control maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on improved genetic algorithm and P&O method. Then this method was used in the experiment. From the experimental results can be seen, the algorithm overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional P&O method can quickly and accurately tracking the maximum power point of photovoltaic cells output, you can improve system output power.

Abstract:The idea of perturbation and observation has been widely applied in PV power regulation strategies. However, the conventional Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm has an optimal trade-off in choosing efficient step size to balance steady-state oscillations and dynamic response. Modified P&O algorithms improve the performances but increase the computational complexity. This paper develops a concise PV control method taking dp/dv as a control variable calculated in the spatial-domain. The spatial-domain dp/dv calculation is based on the current moment data and the spatially adjacent data to avoids zero denominator problem. This control method achieves oscillations-free in steady-state and has a fast dynamic tracking speed with high-frequency control signal updating. Moreover, it unifies both MPPT (dp/dv = 0) and power reserved modes (dp/dv < 0). The simulation test system with different scenarios is established to highlight its benefits. Also, experiments on a micro-boost converter combined with a PV panel in the practical set-up are carried out to verify its effectiveness. Performance of an spatial-domain dp/dv calculation based control method is compared with the popular and recent state-of-the-art methods. The satisfactory dynamic and steady-state performances show the superiority over state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Conventional global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) control for photovoltaic (PV) systems shows certain limitations in terms of convergence speed and tracking accuracy, resulting from the sophisticated searching mechanism to ensure the operation under partial shading conditions (PSCs). To address these issues, in this paper, a high-performance GMPPT (HP-GMPPT) method is proposed with a modified explicit PV model to express the global maximum power point directly, thus, effectively reducing the invalid searching in conventional solutions. Notably, in this paper, the requirement for irradiance measurement in the conventional explicit PV model is eliminated after sufficient modification by integrating a low-cost irradiance estimation mechanism. It is cost-effective for the existing PV systems. To validate the proposed HP-GMPPT method, simulation evaluations and comparisons are carried out under various PSC scenarios.

Abstract:An analog MPPT controller suitable for DMPPT solar array is presented in this paper. In order to achieve an accurate tracking, “Perturb and Observe” tracking algorithm is applied. PWM+ burst dual mode control strategy is adopted in the controller to obtain a high efficiency in both high and low irradiation intensity. Finally, simulation results and experimental results are reported and discussed. It shows that in DMPPT topology the output power is 15% more than that in CMPPT topology.

Abstract:The output power of PV (photovoltaic) array is highly nonlinear, time-varying and have multiple local power extreme points in particle shadow, which leads to the failure of traditional MPPT (maximum power point tracking) algorithm. A composite MPPT algorithm is proposed to solve the problem, in which an improved PSO (particle swarm optimization) is combined with an adaptive P&O (perturb and observe) method. The improved PSO algorithm is used to implement the fast search for the approximate GMPP (global maximum power point), and then adaptive P&O method is employed to search accurately, in order to make the PV array work stably at the maximum power point. The MATLAB / Simulink model is established to show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a better MPPT performance under different shadows even when the illumination intensity changes suddenly, compared with the traditional PSO and P&O method.

Abstract:This paper proposed an analog controller without multiplier to realize the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for PV applications based on an improved perturbation and observation (P&O) method. Comparing with traditional analog MPPT controller designs which need a multiplier to calculate the power value to implement P&O, the proposed method only perturbs and observes single variable to get the same effects, therefore the circuit is simplified and the cost is decreased. The controller uses classical and simple functions of electronic circuits. This design is applicable for most PV applications and is easily made into an IC. The whole circuit has been implemented and validated on both simulation and hardware platforms. The results show good tracking accuracy and high efficiency of MPPT (more than 99%) under variable solar irradiation.

Abstract:To mitigate the challenges posed by the non-linear multi-peak power-voltage output characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) systems operating under partial shading conditions, which often lead to suboptimal performance of conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms, a novel approach was introduced. We introduce the LGWGCA-P&O method, which synergistically combines an modified Great Wall Construction Algorithm (LGWGCA) with the Perturbation and Observation (P&O) technique. The LGWGCA is refined with a positional update mechanism inspired by the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm, optimizing the distribution of solution agents, while a Levy flight strategy is employed to reduce excessive randomness during agent replacement and recombination, thereby accelerating the tracking process. As the algorithm approaches the maximum power point, it seamlessly transitions to the P&O method, leveraging its rapid convergence to ensure precise and efficient power point identification. Experimental results demonstrate that the LGWGCA-P&O method achieves a PV conversion efficiency exceeding 99.96%, significantly minimizing power losses during MPPT. Furthermore, the method enhances convergence speed by approximately 40% compared to traditional GWO-P&O approaches, and it consistently outperforms Particle Swarm Optimization and Cuckoo Search Optimization algorithms under extreme conditions, demonstrating superior computational efficiency and robustness.

Abstract:In practical engineering applications, factors like dust adhesion and environmental changes can cause photovoltaic arrays to exhibit multiple peaks in output power. An optimization algorithm with global optimization capability is needed to track its maximum power. In this regard, this paper proposes an improved marine predator algorithm (IMPA) to extract the maximum power point of photovoltaic system under complex solar irradiation conditions. To overcome the issues in the traditional marine predator algorithm (MPA), the opposition-based learning(OBL) strategy is introduced in IMPA, and the sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is integrated into the iteration stage to enhance the search ability of the algorithm. Furthermore, the low-order converter in the traditional MPPT control system is replaced by the Zeta converter, which increases the operating voltage range. Ultimately, simulation results demonstrate that the MPPT based on IMPA has higher tracking efficiency and shorter response time.The experimental results also indicate the practical feasibility of this method, as well as its high level of stability and robustness.

Abstract:The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is generally implemented in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power plants to maximize the energy yield. However, as the penetration level increases, challenging issues such as overloading and overvoltage arise in PV applications. Accordingly, a constant power generation (CPG) operation, in which the PV output power is limited to a specific value, has been imposed by some grid regulators to alleviate the integration challenges. In that case, the combined operation of MPPT and CPG is required, which increases the complexity of the controller design. To generalize the two control objectives, a flexible active power control algorithm that combines both MPPT and CPG operating modes is proposed. The proposed algorithm can optimize the performance in both modes (i.e., MPPT and CPG). By adjusting the voltage-step between two consecutive operating points, fast dynamics and low-power oscillations can be obtained. The performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated through simulations and experiments under different irradiance and power reference profiles.

Abstract:Photovoltaic arrays operating under partial shading conditions (PSCs) may exhibit multiple peaks in the power-voltage curve of the PV system output. The conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm cannot address the multipeak problem and demonstrates slow convergence speed, often falling into a local optimum. Consequently, this study proposes a collaborative and cosine arithmetic optimisation algorithm (CCAOA). First, a cosine factor is introduced into the mathematical optimisation. Circle chaotic mapping and cross-variance strategy were incorporated to boost the diversity and randomness within the algorithm population followed by a cooperative search strategy involving addition and subtraction to enhance the algorithm's local search capability, thereby accelerating its convergence speed. We assessed the effectiveness of the CCAOA using six IEEE standard test functions. The CCAOA outperforms other algorithms in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. Furthermore, when applied to the MPPT control strategy, the CCAOA's performance is validated through simulations and experiments. MPPT can be performed within approximately 0.3 to 0.4 s under static conditions, with 99.98% efficiency. Under dynamic conditions, only approximately 0.4 s is required for MPPT, thereby achieving a maximum efficiency of 99.99%. Conversely, the AOA, TSO, and PSO algorithms require over 0.4 s for MPPT and can be trapped in local optima under these two conditions. Experiments were conducted using a PV simulator and DC/DC converter, and the algorithm achieved efficiencies of 99.22%, 99.33%, and 99.54% under uniform irradiation and two PSCs, respectively.

Abstract:Considering that the output of the photovoltaic panel is dependent upon the irradiation and environmental temperature, a novel MPPT controller chip based on Perturb and Observe (PO)-arithmetic was proposed to maximize its output power and optimize its efficiency. It features the improved control strategy and is implemented by analog circuits. The core modules including the multiplier and differentiator were optimized to simplify its structure and improve the control performance. It is easy to apply and its area as well as its cost is reduced.

Abstract:Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems under partial shading conditions (PSCs) have a nonmonotonic P V characteristic with multiple local maximum power points, which makes the existing maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms unsatisfactory performance for global MPPT, if not invalid. This paper proposes a novel overall distribution (OD) MPPT algorithm to rapidly search the area near the global maximum power points, which is further integrated with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) MPPT algorithm to improve the accuracy of MPPT. Through simulations and experimentations, the higher effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed OD-PSO MPPT algorithm in solar PV systems is demonstrated in comparison to two existing artificial intelligence MPPT algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, photovoltaic industry is introduced briefly. For the shortcomings of the fixed-step perturbation and observation (P&O) method in the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technology, a variable-step P&O method is proposed and the algorithm is further improved. In the PV system, the MPPT is realized by changing the duty cycle of switching tube in the Boost converter. The simulations were conducted in the Matlab/Simulink platform. At last, the experimental results on the 3kw prototype showed that the new MPPT algorithm is effective.

Abstract:This paper presents the analysis, design and implementation of a high-performance step-up Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system for grid-connected Photovoltaic (PV) generation. The high-achieved MPPT control method, which is an important essential part of the efficient and low-cost PV system, needs to solve two main problems: wrongly tracking the local maxima under partial shading, and tracking in the direction opposite to reality under rapid atmospheric changes. Furthermore, the MPPT strategy should have the following traits: practical, ability to reach the global maxima in a minimum of time, costless and high efficiency. A simple boost topology using radiometer and a voltage sensor is proposed with the MPPT algorithm and the operation characteristics are analyzed. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Photovoltaic (PV) systems frequently suffer disproportionate impacts on energy production due to mismatch cases. To remedy this, academia proposed a distributed Max Power Point Tracking (MPPT) solution and has been implemented commercially. Taking the trend of the “distributed MPPT” concept a step further, this paper discuss and analysis an MPPT converter that connects to each PV cell string, called a Sub-Panel MPPT Converter (SPMC), to better address the real-world mismatch issues. The SPMC system with a unified output MPPT control structure is also proposed in order to reduce the cost and simplify the distributed MPPT system. The proposal saves A/D units, current sensors and MPPT controllers on the premise of guaranteeing that all the PV cell strings working on its individual maximum power statue regardless of the mismatch case. This is favorable for further integration and makes the whole SPMC system less expensive and easier to realize. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposal is confirmed experimentally.

Abstract:Since the BP neural network has poor performance and unstable learning rate in the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm of photovoltaic (PV) system, an adaptive particle swarm optimization BP neural network-fuzzy control PV MPPT algorithm (APSO-BP-FLC) is proposed in this paper. First, the inertia weight, learning factor and acceleration factor of particle swarm optimization (PSO) are self-updating, and the mutation operator is adopted to initialize the position of each particle. Second, the APSO algorithm is used to update the optimal weight threshold of BP neural network, where the input layer is irradiation and temperature, and the output layer is the maximum power point (MPP) voltage. Third, the fuzzy logical control (FLC) is employed to adjust the duty cycle of Boost converter. The inputs of FLC are voltage difference and duty ratio D(n-1) at the previous time, and the output is duty ratio D(n). Moreover, D(n-1) is optimized by |dP/dU| to improve the search range of FLC. The irradiation, temperature and MPP voltage of PV cell are adopted as the datasets for simulation in a city in Shaanxi province, China. Simulation results show that the proposed MPPT algorithm is superior to the APSO-BP, FLC and perturbation and observation (P&O) algorithm with tracking performance, steady state oscillation rate and efficiency. In addition, the efficiency of proposed MPPT algorithm is improved by 0.37%, 6.2%, and 6.8% as compared to APSO-BP, FLC and P&O algorithm.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and perturbation observation (P&O) method, this paper proposes a novel hybrid approach called the improved chaotic whale optimization combined with perturb and observe (ICWOA-P&O) method for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to solve the challenge of low efficiency in photovoltaic (PV) power generation under local shadows. First, the ICWOA is used for a global search to quickly locate the position of the maximum power point (MPP). Then, the P&O method is used for a fine-grained local search to quickly track the position of the global maximum power point (GMPP) with low oscillation. To ensure accuracy, the tracking performance of the ICWOA-P&O method is comprehensively compared with the WOA-P&O, WOA, and PSO models under four conditions: uniform irradiance, static local shading, dynamic shading, and sudden changes in irradiance and temperature. The simulation results verify that under the above four conditions, the ICWOA-P&O method can track the MPP continuously and stably and greatly improves the convergence time and accuracy. Compared with the other three methods, the ICWOA-P&O method can effectively obtain the fastest tracking speed (less than 0.1 s), the highest tracking accuracy (more than 99.97%), the smallest relative error (less than 0.03%), and the smallest oscillation fluctuation. Finally, this study integrated the ICWOA-P&O algorithm into the designed MPPT controller hardware and established a practical PV experimental platform based on the ICWOA-P&O control algorithm for practical tests.
