Abstract:A considerable number of research works have been carried out to study the effects of electric current and frequency of Electromagnetic Stirring (EMS) on the quality of cast steels, but there are only a few studies available addressing the effects of EMS location on inclusion removal and steel cleanliness An ideal position of EMS will improve inclusion floatation and separation from liquid steel. However, inappropriate installation will lead to the entrapment of the slag into liquid steel, and impact the quality of cast billet. The current applied for these plant trials was 300A at a frequency of 3Hz, positions form axial centers of EMS to the top of the mold were 450mm, 510mm and 690mm respectively. 130 billets of medium carbon steel were produced and samples were taken for spectral analysis to study the effects of installation location of EMS on steel cleanliness. The experimental results show that the optimum position of EMS should be placed 510mm from the top end of the copper mold when the electrical current is 300A at frequency of 3 Hz. The three parameters of placement of EMS in paper were obtained from the simulation results, and this paper focused mainly on the effect EMS position on inclusion behaviors in billet.

Abstract:The effects of different electromagnetic stirring intensity on the inner quality of the middle carbon steel of the bloom are analysed by comparative experiment. The stirring currents that are executed in the experiment are 150A, 200A, 250A, 300A, and 350A respectively. The results have showed that the inner quality of the bloom can be improved by increasing the current intensity of M-EMS of 34Mn2V steel, the proportion of central equiaxed grain of the bloom can be increased to 33.65% from 22.50%; the effects of E-MES current on 34Mn2V steel in central segregation, and central looseness are not obvious, and the distribution of the carbon component in the bloom transect is homogeneity relativity. After using M-EMS, liquid-phase convection of solidifying front became more acute, the convection scoured the frontal solidification which grows from the columnar crystal. The mother liquid and the liquid in the two-phase region are mixed by the liquid-phase convection of solidifying front, in result, the solute chroma tend to be constant.

Abstract:During continuous casting production of square billet, the quality of steel billet is determined by equiaxed grain rate and defect grade of centerline segregation. The application of mold electromagnetic stirrer (M-EMS) can improve the quality, but it also brings some negative effects. Some researchers have attempted to make a swirling flow generated in submerged entry nozzle keep rotating in the mold to replace M-EMS. In this work, the influence of electromagnetic swirling flow in nozzle (EMSFN) on morphology of solidification structure and macrosegregation characteristics of carbon and sulfur was studied under different industrial test conditions, and the results were compared with those obtained by M-EMS. The results show that when the current frequency of EMSFN device is 50 Hz, with the current intensity increasing from 200 A to 600 A, the quantity of equiaxed grains increases gradually, while the severity of centerline segregation decreases first and then increases. The optimum value of centerline segregation was obtained when solidification structure was dominated by fine columnar crystals. Therefore, the swirling flow intensity of molten steel in submerged entry nozzle can be changed by adjusting the current parameters of EMSFN device, and thus the billets with different morphology of solidification structure and severity of macrosegregation can be obtained. Under the experimental condition, when the current parameters of EMSFN device reach certain values, EMSFN can achieve the same or even better effect as M-EMS in improving the quality of billet.

Abstract:A three‐dimensional model of fluid flow, heat transfer, solidification, and inclusion motion in a billet mold at ultrahigh casting speed under electromagnetic field is developed. The low Reynolds number k–ε model coupled with electromagnetic model, and Lagrangian discrete phase model is used to investigate the flow field, temperature field, solidification, and inclusions transport under different current intensities. The results show that mold electromagnetic stirring (M‐EMS) significantly alters the flow pattern of molten steel. The impact depth of the molten steel decreases as the stirring current intensity increases, and the horizontal swirl intensities of the molten steel increases with the stirring current intensity. As the current intensity increases from 500 to 700 A, the impact depth decreases from 0.637 to 0.575 m and the maximum tangential velocity increases from 0.477 to 0.898 m s‐1. When the stirring current is intense, the flow of molten steel near the mold exit is reversed, and the molten steel flows asymmetrically and unsteadily. The M‐EMS effectively improves the transverse heat transfer of the molten steel in the mold, contributing to the dissipation of the molten steel superheat and the growth of the solidified shell. Effect of Mould Electromagnetic Stirring on Innter Quality of Heavy Rail Steel Bloom

Abstract:The present paper analyzes the effect of different electromagnetic stirring intensities on the inner quality of the heavy rail steel bloom through comparison of the results out of different experiments.In the experiments 24 blocks of concasting bloom are used as the testing pieces and the stirring currents adopted are 250,350,400,450 and 500 A respectively.Results show that proportions of judging grade≤1.0 on the central segregation and central porosity of the bloom account to 95.83 %and 87.50 %,and the 500 A current of electromagnetic stirring intensity determined in the research is a key technological parameter for improvement in the inner quality of heavy rail steel.Liquid phase convection at the solidifying front can be intensified due to the action of the electromagnetic force after implermentation of the mould electromagnetic stirring and at this time the intensified convection may further scour and rinse solidification front,and as the results the liquid flow at the solidification front inevitably leads to a mixture of the matrix with the liquid of the dual-phase and thus the concentration of the solute tends to be more homogeneous.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The multiphase flow, initial solidification and solute diffusion and their interactions in a mold region of 380 × 280 mm<sup class="a-plus-plus">2</sup> casting bloom under different installation positions of in-mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS) were analyzed and compared by a multi-physical model. The results showed that the simulated electromagnetic field and solute carbon distribution in initial solidified shell are basically consistent with measurements. As the distance from EMS center to the meniscus increases (from 0.32 to 0.62 m), the level fluctuation decrease from 7.2 to 4.5 mm, while the volume of turbulent zone clearly expands. Additionally, the solidified shell thickness at the mold outlets increase from 12.90 to 16.32 mm and from 26.41 to 28.97 mm at outlets of computational domain as EMS center moves down, while the surface temperature decreases. The maximum negative segregation deteriorates from 0.95 to 0.83 at the bloom corner while increasing from 0.84 to 0.92 in the thickness direction, and the difference between the minimum and maximum carbon concentrations at center of computational outlets is only about 0.0029 pct. The EMS should be installed around 0.42 m below the meniscus, by which the disqualified rate of non-metallic inclusions and the level fluctuations are within a low level.</p>

Abstract:Non-metallic inclusions are the impurities that solidified during steel continuous casting. The compositions, sizes and shapes of inclusions significantly affect the steels’ mechanical properties such as ductility, formability and toughness. This paper mainly focuses on the observation and characterization of non-metallic inclusions in high strength low alloy steels, and especially is devoted to the homogenization of molten steel within the copper mold of continuous casters, as the primary purpose of this project is to discover the optimum operation parameters for electro-magnetic stirrers surrounding the copper mold. In this paper, non-metallic inclusions in high strength low alloy steel were observed and characterized, and separation of non-metallic inclusions from high strength low alloy steel by electromagnetic stirring was specifically studied. The nonmetallic inclusions in the billet can be greatly reduced when the electromagnetic stirring parameters of the mold are 300 A current and 3 Hz EMS frequency.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and mechanical reduction on the improvement of the internal homogeneity has been studied during the continuous casting of high-carbon steel billet. Plant trials were conducted with different parameters both for mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS) and final electromagnetic stirring (F-EMS), at the same casting condition and with a unified mechanical reduction process. As the stirring intensity of EMS increases, both the initiation and termination of columnar to equiaxed transition occur at an earlier timing. The results also indicate that, EMS could result in a decline trend for the compactness of the casting billet to a certain extent, especially in the pure equiaxed crystal zone at the core part of the billet. Under the proper intensity setting of M-EMS and F-EMS, the crack susceptibility of the high-carbon steel billet was markedly decreased by enlarging the mixed crystal zone, which is not arrayed with distinct directionality while featured with a relatively high compactness. The effect of EMS on the solidification behavior, and therefore on the crack susceptibility of the high-carbon steel billet was further explained with the numerical simulation. Consequently, a superior inner quality of high-carbon steel billet was successfully achieved with the effective synergy of EMS and mechanical reduction.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">To alleviate macrosegregation, it is the first time that an electromagnetic nozzle swirling flow is applied with a mold electromagnetic stirrer (M-EMS) during continuous casting of square and round billets. Compared with those by only M-EMS, the carbon ranges in square and round billets can be reduced to 0.022 and 0.046 pct, respectively, and the equiaxed crystal ratios are 18 and 33 pct, respectively, by using opposite nozzle swirling flow.</p>

Abstract:The effects of electromagnetic stirring on the flow field and level fluctuation were researched for 260mm ×300mm bloom molds by combining the finite element method with the finite volume method. The simulated magnetic field is consistent with measured data in a real plant. Molten steel swirls in the horizontal section and forms two pairs of recirculation zones with opposite circulation directions in the longitudinal section. When the current and frequency increase, the maximum tangential velocity increases, and the level fluctuation of the free surface aggravates. For 260 mm ×300 mm bloom continuous casting of bearing steel, the reasonable current and frequency of mold electromagnetic stirring are 300 A and 3 Hz, respectively.

Abstract:Due to its excellent creep rupture strength and low cost,superalloy GH2984 has becoming a promising material to be used as heat exchanger in the prospective 700℃fossil power plant.The mechanical strength,which is a particularly important indicator for the superalloy,strongly depends on the grain size and crabide distribution.In current study,we have investigated the influence of a rotating magnetic field(RMF)on the solidified microstructures and tensile properties of superalloy GH2984.RMF has been applied to provide a forced convection within the solidifying melt.The melt stirring by a sufficiently high magnetic field provides homogeneous grain size and elements distribution in the sample volume.Meanwhile,yield strength is found to be effectively enhanced for the sample solidified under magnetic field.The result has demonstrated that the RMF method on the melt solidification process shows a promising perspective for refining the grains and promoting the mechanical strength of superalloy GH2984.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>The solidification structure and macrosegregation are investigated in different current intensities of mold electromagnetic stirring (M‐EMS) and final electromagnetic stirring (F‐EMS) by a series of industrial trials during the 20CrMnTi bloom continuous casting (CC) process. With the current intensity of M‐EMS increasing from 100 to 390 A, the deflection angle of columnar dendrites increases from 25.0 to 32.49 deg. With the current intensity of M‐EMS increasing from 0 to 390 A, the equiaxed crystal ratio increases from 20.4% to 25.7% and center porosity varies little. With the increasing current intensity of M‐EMS, the negative segregation in the subsurface and positive segregation in the columnar‐to‐equiaxed transition (CET) zone deteriorate gradually. The M‐EMS has little effect on the center‐positive segregation, and the center‐positive segregation is maintained at 1.37–1.40. With the current intensity of F‐EMS increasing from 0 to 500 A, the equiaxed crystal ratio is within 25.3–25.8%, and the large center porosities disappear instead of numerous fine spots in the equiaxed zone. The degree of center‐positive segregation decreases from 1.48 to 1.30. For the CC process, to obtain a better internal quality of 20CrMnTi bloom, the optimal current intensities of M‐EMS and F‐EMS are 0 and 500 A, respectively.</p></section>

Abstract:A three-dimensional numerical model coupling the macrosegregation and magnetohydrodynamic simulations was developed to investigate the effects of electromagnetic stirring (EMS) on the macrosegregation. The results show that a significant swirling flow was induced by the in-mold EMS, which further changed the shape of the solidification shell and homogenized the solute elements in mold. However, the effects were only confined to the initial billet shell. The improvement in centerline segregation was observed with the usage of the final EMS (F-EMS), which led to the forced convection at the final solidification stage. The solute elements in the mushy zone were significantly even, with the maximum segregation degree of solute C reducing from 1.311 to 1.237. In addition, the effects of the stirrer positions and currents of F-EMS on the macrosegregation alleviation were numerically studied. Different values of centerline segregation were predicted with various stirrer positions and currents, and there is an optimum stirrer parameter to obtain the best macrosegregation alleviation. In the experimental conditions, the optimum position was about 7 m away from meniscus, and the optimum current was 300 A.

Abstract:Carbon segregation is the major and classical internal defect in the continuous casting process of carbon steel. Based on the combined electromagnetic stirring equipment for new billet in a steel plant, China, the influence of combined electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS + F-EMS) on the carbon segregation of 300 mm × 340 mm special-shaped billet was studied via numerical simulation and on-site industrialization tests. The Lorentz force and carbon solute distribution were simulated under different EMS parameters. The formation mechanism of the carbon segregation of medium carbon steel with different combined electromagnetic stirring processes was analyzed. The results show that: (1) with the combined action of “solute flushing” effect and gravity, the carbon concentration in the loose side of the medium carbon steel casting billet is gradually lower than the fixed side, while the carbon concentration on the fixed side gradually accumulates more; and (2) under the action of combined electromagnetic stirring, the segregation index of casting billet could be controlled to remain between 0.96–1.05 and shows an increasing change in solidification from the skin to the center. When the current and frequency of M-EMS are 250 A and 2.0 Hz and the F-EMS are 180 A and 8.0 Hz, the carbon segregation defects in the special-shaped (300 mm × 340 mm) casting billet can be significantly improved.
Numerical Simulation of the Effect of Solidified Shell Conductivity and Billet Sizes on the Magnetic Field with Final Electromagnetic Stirring in Continuous Casting

Abstract:Coupled with the results of a 2D heat transfer model, a 3D electromagnetic stirring round billet model is developed, which is considered for the difference in the conductivity of solidified shell and molten steel. The electromagnetic field distribution features of the billet and the effect of round billet sizes on the electromagnetic field are investigated. It is found that as the solidified shell conductivity of the Φ600 mm round billet increases from 7.14 × 105 S·m-1 to 1.0 × 106 S·m-1, the magnetic induction intensity decreases and the maximum value of electromagnetic force drops from 7976.26 N·m-3 to 5745.32 N·m-3. The magnetic induction intensity on the center axis of the stirrer rarely changes in the range of Φ100-Φ200 mm. With the increase in the round billet from Φ300 mm to Φ600 mm, the magnetic induction intensity and the electromagnetic force on the center axis of the stirrer decrease slowly and then significantly. In the range of 2-8 Hz, as the current strength reaches its maximum, the electromagnetic force can be increased by increasing the current frequency for round billets of Φ100-Φ500 mm, while there is an optimal current frequency for round billets larger than Φ600 mm.

Abstract:Many experimental results confirm that electromagnetic stirring (EMS) has a good purification effect on the melts, either degassing or removing inclusions, but the mechanism of electromagnetic purification still needs to be further explored. This paper takes M174 alloy as an example, and carries out a more in-depth study on the purification effect of electromagnetic field on the basis of numerical simulation, focusing on the amount of hydrogen present in the ingot, the enhancement effect of electromagnetic field stirring on the mechanical properties of the melt was investigated in terms of the treatment temperature, and the current intensity during electromagnetic stirring. The results show that the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy reached 195.3 MPa and 0.69% after electromagnetic stirring at a current intensity of 60 A, which are very close to the theoretical properties of the alloy of 200.3 MPa and 0.74%, respectively. At the same time, the effect of electromagnetic stirring on the presence of oxides and double oxide film in the melt is slightly explored.

Abstract:Knowing the effect of electromagnetic force on fluid flow and solidification within the molds of large-size round blooms is of paramount importance to minimize internal and external defects. In this regard, a three-dimensional coupling model is established, containing magnetohydrodynamics, fluid flow, and heat transfer within the mold, and a new approach for the uniformity of the initial shell is presented. Meanwhile, the effect of stirring parameters on fluid flow and solidification is discussed. The results show that M-EMS can significantly change the temperature and velocity distribution within the mold. These changes can stabilize the level fluctuations and make the initial shell uniform. The maximum industrial height fluctuation was reduced from 1.9 mm to 1.3 mm when the stirring intensity was 375 A/3 Hz. The stirring intensity of M-EMS is relatively ideal.

Abstract:Based on our previously proposed three-phase solidification model, a comprehensive analysis on the impact of the only electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and combined EMS on the microscopic structure evolution and solute segregation behavior in a 500 mm diameter 42CrMo steel of continuously cast round bloom. The results indicate that M-EMS has a notable impact on expediting the dissipation of superheat, enhancing the initiation of grain formation, and enlarging the equiaxed region. The percentage of equiaxed grains increased from 59.26 to 63.37% with the increment in current intensities of M-EMS from 250 to 350 A. However, higher M-EMS current intensities were found to enhance local positive segregation in the transition zone between columnar and equiaxed grains. The impact of M-EMS on improving center positive segregation was minimal, as the ratio of center positive segregation remained consistently around 1.17. Furthermore, the implementation of F-EMS demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing center positive segregation. The ratio of center positive segregation decreased from 1.14 to 1.10, when the current intensity increases from 150 to 250 A. However, it should be noted that F-EMS alone did not contribute to the expansion of the equiaxed zone. On the other hand, when M-EMS was combined with F-EMS (referred to as combined EMS), it showed potential in mitigating center segregation during continuous casting round blooms. The benefits observed with M-EMS in terms of promoting grain nucleation and expanding the equiaxed grain zone were also evident in this combined EMS process. Furthermore, a notable enhancement in the equiaxed grain ratio up to 60.13% was observed combined EMS models were simultaneously employed during continuous casting of round blooms. And, there was a reduction in center segregation ratio for round blooms to as low as 1.09.

Abstract:Mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS) has been introduced into the continuous casting of steel billets to promote the formation of a central equiaxed zone; however, the formation mechanism of the equiaxed crystals and the effect of M-EMS on crystal transport are not fully understood. Currently, a three-phase volume average model was used to study the solidification in a billet continuous casting (195 mm × 195 mm). The modeling results showed that the main function of M-EMS in this type of billet casting is to promote superheat dissipation in the mold region, leaving the liquid core out of the mold region undercooled. Although both, heterogeneous nucleation and crystal fragmentation, are considered to be the origins of equiaxed crystals, M-EMS appeared to impact crystal fragmentation more effectively. A small portion of equiaxed crystals could be brought by the M-EMS induced swirling flow into the superheated zone (upper mold region) and remelted; most equiaxed crystals settled in the lower undercooled zone, where they continued to grow and form a central equiaxed zone. These simultaneous phenomena represent an important species/energy transport mechanism, influencing the as-cast structure and macrosegregation. Negative segregation occurred in the central equiaxed zone, positive segregation occurred at the border of the columnar zone, and a trail of negative segregation occurred in the subsurface region of the billet. Finally, parameter studies were performed, and it was found that the shielding effect of the copper mold, electrical isolation at the strand-mold interface, and relatively high electrical conductivity of the strand shell affect the M-EMS efficiency.
