Abstract:Gray mold disease is one of the most serious plant diseases affecting tomato seedling and identifying its attacked time is important for loss control. This study employed a new detection technique, electronic nose (E-nose), to predict the attacked time of tomato seedlings with gray mold disease and introduced a way to seek the best parameters of Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) to receive the best prediction results. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) combining Principal Component Analysis (PCA) performed well in discriminating different attacked times, which proved the feasibility of E-nose in this area. Three crucial parameters of KPCA, including the type of kernel, kernel parameter, and the accumulated contribution rate, were optimized based on the correct classification rate obtained from LDA. The results showed that when the type of kernel was Gaussian, the kernel parameter (width of Gaussian Ï2) was 1, and the accumulated contribution rate of KPCA reached to 91.61%, the highest correct classification rate was gotten, which was as high as 98.4%. Furthermore, multiple linear regressions (MLR) models were constructed and showed a good correlation between the results of KPCA and attacked time. This study demonstrated that E-nose was a good instrument to predict the attacked time of tomato seedling with gray mold disease and presented the way of optimizing parameters of KPCA. Hopefully, this study can provide a new method for attacked time prediction of tomato seedling, as well as adjacent areas.
