Abstract:Dual-motor Electric Drive Tracked Vehicles (DDTVs) have attracted increasing attention due to their high transmission efficiency and economical fuel consumption. A test bench for the development and validation of new DDTV technologies is necessary and urgent. How to load the vehicle on a DDTV test bench exactly the same as on a real road is a crucial issue when designing the bench. This paper proposes a novel dynamic load emulation method to address this problem. The method adopts dual dynamometers to simulate both the road load and the inertia load that are imposed on the dual independent drive systems. The vehicle’s total inertia equivalent to the drive wheels is calculated with separate consideration of vehicle body, tracks and road wheels to obtain a more accurate inertia load. A speed tracking control strategy with feedforward compensation is implemented to control the dual dynamometers, so as to make the real-time dynamic load emulation possible. Additionally, a MATLAB/Simulink model of the test bench is built based on a dynamics analysis of the platform. Experiments are finally carried out on this test bench under different test conditions. The outcomes show that the proposed load emulation method is effective, and has good robustness and adaptability to complex driving conditions. Besides, the accuracy of the established test bench model is also demonstrated by comparing the results obtained from the simulation model and experiments.

Abstract:Active safety control of a multi-wheel independent drive electric vehicle was tested on a research test bed scheme with a four wheel independent drive electric vehicle based on an existing off road vehicle chassis.After the vehicle design and performance simulations,the four wheel independent drive electric off road prototype was put through preliminarily road tests on the test bed,which shows that the test bed is applicable.The single-bridge dual-decelerator structure designed by the authors is reliable with the bridge structure entity still remaining and the main decelerator being fully used.

Abstract:The load simulation methods for comprehensive performance test bench of drive axle are discussed.First,the vertical load is directly applied on tested axle by hydrocylinder through level;and for modification axle,equivalent load should be applied instead.Second,for simulating vehicle moving with maximum traction force,the road resistance moment is simulated by applying a torque through a current-excited magnetic powder brake.Third,for emergency braking performance test,the translational inertia of complete vehicle is simulated by the moment of inertia of a flywheel.Tests show that the loading scheme can rather accurately simulate the actual loads exerting on a vehicle and hence can relatively exactly evaluate the comprehensive performance of drive axle.

Abstract:In this paper an in-wheel motor drive is chosen for a micro electric vehicle with its system configuration and key parameters design investigated.Firstly a distributed control system consisting of vehicle control unit,motor control units and battery management system and a parallel compound braking system coordinately matching the energy feedback braking with hydraulic braking are configured.Then the parameters of key components are designed.Based on the objective performance parameters of vehicle defined,the parameters of in-wheel motors and power battery are determined according to the results of vehicle dynamic calculation and Matlab/Simulink simulation.Finally the simulation and vehicle test verify that the vehicle performance meets the design indicators.

Abstract:Test-bed is a powerful tool for powertrain integration and control strategy development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper focuses on developing a test-bed controller, which includes seven work modes, among them N/α and RG/v is studied deeply. To expand the torque-speed range of one motor, dual-motor is adopted as the load system of the test-bed and its torque distribution algorithm was developed. Road load simulation (RLS) algorithm was developed to meet the test requirement of RG/v mode and penalty function was added to improve test accuracy. PCI extensions for instrumentation (PXI) developed by National Instruments was chosen as controller hardware and appropriate boards were selected according to the actual needs. Eventually, the developed controller was tested on the test-bed and test results showed that the controller could respond command accurately, and meet the steady testing and dynamic testing requirements well.

Abstract:This paper evaluates a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with concentrated fractional-slot winding and winding switching technology. Such a PMSM is an attractive solution for direct drive in-wheel motor, in which high power density and high efficiency over wide constant power range can be simultaneously achieved. Methods to design in-wheel PMSM with concentrated fractional-slot winding and winding switching technologies are discussed in this paper. A prototype design for a specific application is proposed.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation into the performance of in-wheel motor (IWM) based electric vehicles (IWM-EV) in the longitudinal direction. The design of IWM-EV is an innovation of the conventional go-kart vehicle with slightly modifications in steering, suspension, and braking system, which then makes use three-phase permanent magnet synchronous in-wheel motor (PMSM-IWM) at both of the rear axle wheels. An extension of that is a simulation of IWM-EV vehicle using a 5-degree-of-freedom vehicle longitudinal model that has been developed by incorporating PMSM-IWM as a drive wheel located at the rear axles. Using the simulation, vehicle dynamic control in the longitudinal direction-based Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller has also been strategized. As the intention to confirm the capability of the IWM-EV, experimental studies-based real IWM-EV hardware have been conducted. Three dynamic tests that generalized from SAE standard SAE J866-199908, namely acceleration performance at the level pavement (include acceleration tests and acceleration then braking tests) and road gradient tests at constant speeds of 10, 15 and 20 km/h, were used as the testing method. The performance areas evaluated were vehicle body speed, wheel speed, distance travel experienced by the vehicle, IWMs current, drive torque as well as the battery voltage capacity used by the vehicle. The finding indicate that the simulation results and experimental data are similar with less than 5 % error. The outcomes from this study will be considered in the design optimization of a torque vectoring control in the next research study.

Abstract:Multimotor drivetrain systems utilizing more than one electric machine for propulsion can provide possibilities to improve energy efficiency and vehicle dynamic performance of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, laboratory testing of such drivetrain systems using a dyno test bench can be costly. A solution can be to use a mechanical-hardware-in-the-loop (MHIL) test bench, which combines real-time simulations of the intended working environment with the dyno test bench. To utilize the MHIL approach for multimotor drivetrain systems, one drivetrain is implemented in the dyno test bench, while the remaining are simulated using a real-time simulator, therefore, providing a less expensive solution for laboratory testing of drivetrain components and control methods in their intended environment. In this work, an MHIL test bench for a multimotor drivetrain system is designed and experimentally verified. A BEV with two independently driven front wheels is considered for modeling. To interface the dyno test bench with real-time simulation, two different methods, namely, open loop and closed loop, are proposed and verified in experiments by prototyping an MHIL test bench. In addition, an anti-slip control is implemented and evaluated experimentally to demonstrate the suitability of the proposed MHIL test bench in the verification of control methods.

Abstract:Taking the driving wheel force as input and driving wheel angular acceleration as output, the kinemics model of track vehicle was built and the whole vehicle was equaled to wheel inertia based on actual pavement condition and test platform structure. Transmission function of test bed was recognized. The strategy of speed track, combined with single side speed closed-loop and both sides loaded control, was proposed. Test results showed that there was no abrupt change in speed during shift and slope process. The change of output torque was accord with actual road situation. The proposed method was proved to be valid and precisions in vehicle test.

Abstract:The electrical driving system is crucial to the performance of electric vehicles (EVs). It is problematic for an in-wheel motor (IWM) driven by a single motor to satisfy certain dynamics requirements or to remain highly efficient at full operating conditions. In this paper, a novel IWM driving system driven by two permanent magnet synchronous disc motors (PMSDMs) with a planetary differential gear train (PDGT) is put forward. The PMSDMs are designed based on the parameters and dynamic indicators of the vehicle. Thereafter, the PMSDMs are optimized from aspects of the rotor skewing angle and pole arc coefficient and verified by finite element analysis (FEA). Then the characteristic coefficient of PDGT is optimized through non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) combined with dynamic programming (DP). The economic performance improves by 5.0% and dynamic performance improves by 4.4% with the characteristic coefficient optimized from 3 to 1.65. Meanwhile, the economic performance of the novel dual-motor IWM shows significant improvement compared to the traditional single-motor IWM in simulation. Furthermore, a prototype is developed and tested. Both the simulation and experimental results reveal the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed novel IWM driving system.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. In order to solve the problem of motor performance degradation caused by torque ripple and large cogging torque of in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicles, Taguchi is used to optimize the magnetic pole of built-in Permanent magnet synchronous motor, and the orthogonal optimization matrix of magnetic pole parameters is established. Through the parameter optimization matrix, the workload of pole optimization is reduced and the optimization speed is improved. The optimization results show that the orthogonal matrix optimization can not only improve the output torque of permanent magnet synchronous motor, but also further control its torque ripple and cogging. The orthogonal matrix optimization method used in this paper for V-I type built-in permanent magnet synchronous motor has a certain positive significance, and provides a certain reference value for the subsequent motor performance optimization.

Abstract:To increase the driving comfortableness and reliability of electric vehicles, multi-phase fault-tolerant permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are becoming promising candidates, especially for the vehicles adopting in-wheel PMSM schemes. In this paper, a novel five-phase fault-tolerant modular in-wheel PMSM is proposed and investigated. The applicable slot/pole combinations are recommended for five-phase PMSM, and the 40-slot/42-pole scheme is selected for the wheel driven application in this paper. The electromagnetic structure was designed, and the fault-tolerant tooth was optimized to obtain better torque curve. The fault-tolerant ability was analyzed under some fault conditions, including one phase open-circuited, two adjacent phases open-circuited, two non-adjacent phases open-circuited and one single phase short-circuited. The results indicate that the drive system can survive these fault conditions; through proper current control strategies, different fault-tolerant performances can be obtained. The proposed scheme is proved to have satisfying electromagnetic and fault-tolerant performances.

Abstract:An experimental research platform based on dynamic testbed is developed and applied for electric motor test and analysis . Fieldbus including CAN, LAN and RS-232 are used to share data between motor controller, testbed control computer and dynamic testbed controller. A serial of program based on LabVIEW is developed to record and process data. Motor characteristic curve is acquired through experiments on this testbed. Abstract:Due to the low inertia, low damp, and high stiffness, in-wheel-drive system has vibration problems, especially under off-road conditions. Mechanical approaches such as applying additional inertia to wheels can effectively reduce the torsional vibration, however, that increases unsprung mass and brings more severe vertical vibration. In this article, electronic inertia is designed for the system to realize the same function of mechanical inertia. Joint simulation is conducted between Carsim and Matlab/Simulink, which shows that this method can suppress the torsional vibration to a satisfying level without extra cost.

Abstract:The dynamic test-bed is a powerful tool for the powertrain integration and control strategy development of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper focuses on developing a test-bed controller with driver simulation, road load simulation (RLS), and engine simulation. The main factors that influence the RLS accuracy are analyzed, especially inertia of test-bed and torque signal sampling frequency, and the RLS algorithm with penalty function based on a forward model is proposed. The engine model is developed and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is adopted to realize engine start-up/stop, torque control, and inertia simulation. The simulation platform was built in MATLAB/Simulink to verify its accuracy. The simulation results present the developed RLS with a penalty function based on a forward model that can reduce the speed and torque error. The developed controller is applied to the single-axis parallel HEV test-bed. The experiment results show that the developed test-bed controller can precisely emulate the road load and improve the efficiency of the development of HEV powertrain.

Abstract:This paper presents a redundant PMSM system topology based on four sub-motors for electric vehicle applications. The sub-motors have separate three-phase stator windings and share the only rotor. The sub-motors can be controlled independently, so that the failure in one sub- motor has little influence on the others, which makes the whole system having good fault tolerance performance. In the paper, the hybrid motor of two different sub-stator structures are designed by FEM, and the operating performance are simulated. The simulation results show that the hybrid motor can achieve higher efficiency and smaller torque ripples.
Design and experimental verification of self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system for in-wheel motor electric vehicles

Abstract:A self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system integrated with a magnetorheological damper and a linear motor is designed to attenuate the negative effect of vertical vibration caused by the increased unsprung mass for in-wheel motor electric vehicles in this article. The magnetorheological damper is used as a suspension damper to suppress body vibration, and linear motor is used as a dynamic vibration absorber, namely, linear electromagnetic dynamic vibration absorber, to absorb tire vibration, and regenerates the vibration power to drive the magnetorheological damper, realizing self-power. Based on power flow theory, the power transfer mechanism of the vertical vibration for in-wheel motor electric vehicles and the regeneration potential are analyzed. The negative effect on the dynamic performance of in-wheel motor electric vehicles is analyzed through the root mean square of dynamic responses. Moreover, the specific structure scheme of the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system is provided. The influence of system mass, stiffness, and damping of the linear electromagnetic dynamic vibration absorber on the dynamic performance is analyzed, and these parameters are optimized by particle swarm optimization. Simulation results show that in comparison with a passive damper, the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system can reduce the body acceleration by 17.05%, which is better than the magnetorheological damper (10.08%). The self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system increases the tire dynamic load by 5.62%, but it is 8.68% less than the magnetorheological damper. Additionally, the regenerated power can offset the consumed power adequately to realize self-power. Finally, a bench test is conducted to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the self-powered electromagnetic vibration suppression and absorption system.

A New Electric Wheel and Optimization on Its Suspension Parameters

Abstract:Hub-driven technology with its many advantages has become a potential transformation technology in the automotive industry. In order to inhibit the negative effects of the in-wheel motor, a new electric wheel configuration was presented with two-stage suspensions, and optimization was conducted for the suspension parameters. With the specially introduced flexible transmission elements and motor suspension, the electric wheel is capable of achieving power transmission and vertical vibration isolation simultaneously. A quarter-vehicle model was established, and vehicle performance-related indices were defined to evaluate the applicability of the new electric wheel. An optimization problem was then constructed for suspension parameters, where constraint conditions were derived according to vehicle dynamics. The optimal solution was sought by a genetic algorithm, aiming at utilizing the full potential of the configuration. Simulations were carried out taking the optimal suspension parameters into account, and comparison was made with vehicles equipped with other electric wheel configurations in terms of these performance indices. The results show that the proposed electric wheel reduces motor vibration, and increases wheel dynamic load and vehicle body acceleration.
