Abstract:By changing the charge compositions(the EGR or injecting inert gas into intake pipe), the effects of charge compositions on diesel combustion and emission characteristics were investigated experimentally and numerically. Results show that with the increase of CO2 proportion in charge, soot emissions decrease remarkably which is due to the chemical and thermal effects of CO2. The dilution effects of CO2 and N2 give a similar effectiveness to the reduction of NOx. Thus, the oxygen volume fraction is the key reason for the reduction of NOx Simulation shows that the combustion can not avoid NOx and soot forming regions with the oxygen volume fraction of 13% for N2. While with the oxygen volume fraction of 15% for CO2, the combustion can simultaneously avoid NOx and soot forming regions. With the increase of CO2 proportion in charge, the in-cylinder temperature distribution becomes more homogeneously due to longer ignition delay. Charge compositions also influence the combustion path.
