Abstract:In recent years, offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities have increased dramatically in deep waters. The offshore pipelines have to be laid to the seabed of corresponding water depth to gathering and transporting the products. The safety of offshore pipelines in complicated loading conditions such as high ambient pressure, axial tension and bending moment during deepwater installation has drawn more attentions than shallow waters. The present study is focused on mechanical analysis of S-lay pipeline from the lay barge over the stinger to the seabed. The commercial finite element analysis software OFFPIPE is applied to calculate the configuration, bending moment and strain of the pipeline for different laying depth and parameters. Some crucial positions in the pipeline where the strain is comparatively large and the configuration changes dramatically are detected. At the same time, the effects of laying parameters such as the tension of top end of pipeline, the stinger radius, the pipe diameter and wall-thickness on the mechanical behavior of the pipeline are analyzed. Based on these studies, a few significant conclusions are drawn, providing the design and installation monitoring of deepwater pipeline with theoretical basis.
