Abstract:Small strain shear modulus G(max) is a key parameter together with the state of stress and shear strain amplitude for predicting the dynamic behavior of granular soils. Experimental test results indicated that G(max) of sand under the influences of high amplitude seismic cyclic loading history is moderately lower than the corresponding value of non-cyclic loading effects at the same effective stress. However, the micro-mechanism of this effect remains unclear. With the implementation of shear wave propagation in DEM simulation, shear wave velocity is obtained by employing the method of cross-correlation analysis. The value of G(max) of granular soils under the influences of cyclic loading history was investigated by measuring the shear wave velocity at a number of certain effective stresses during a cyclic triaxial test using DEM, and that of G(max) without such effects was examined for comparison. Their microscopic information including coordination number, microscopic fabric, as well as contact sliding was compared and carefully studied to interpret the micro-mechanism of cyclic loading effects on G(max).
