Abstract:According to the records of China Earthquake Data Center and the earthquake information,the article analyses the earthquake data of Shaanxi since 2001.Using the statistics,contrast,diagram and other research methods,the earthquake’s spatial-temporal feature has been reveoled.From the research,the article indicates that there have been 846 times of earthquakes,87 times above the 3 magnitude,with 10 times on average in each year.Since 2001,most of the earthquake were levels,but due to the Wenchuan earthquake and the aftershock which happened in 2008,the earthquakes of Shaanxi were of a high frequency.The earthquake region of Shaanxi is distributed in the Guanzhong plain and the southern area of Shaanxi.It is of low frequency of earthquakes in the northern area of Shaanxi.

Abstract:The relationships between energy, amplitude and frequency of eanhquake are correlative with the property of the seismic source. And the grade of the correlativity can be used as an index to distinguish the types of strong earth quakes. Primarily the strong earthquake can be divided into three types of main-after earthquakes, double-main earthquakes and swarm of strong earthquake. There are similarity and a certain repeatability at the quantificational indexes of hypocenter property between the same type of strong earthquakes, which supply basis for the forecast of subsequent strong shocks. The reference indexes of after strong shock forecast which are valuable for the applica tions of the method of type-divided forecast come from the analysis about more than fifty strong shock wide-band (BPZ wave) recording data of CDSN from 1988 to 1997.

Abstract:Based on detailed studies of paleoearthquakes along major active faults in the transition area between the northeastern margin of Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos block, this paper discusses temporal and spatial distribution of paleoearthquakes and their regional recurrent behavior. The regional paleoearthquake recurrence model in the area exhibits features of temporal and spatial clustering, which may be divided into two kinds. One has a time span about 300 years, and the other has about 1 000 years.

Abstract:In order to push forward the study of Shanxi region,it is the most urgent task to integrate relevant works of researchers and clarify the structure of this discipline at the moment.The author of this paper emphasizes that Jin Xue should means a sort of giant body of academic research.According to different status and features of administrative division,the body of Jin Xue could be divided into three main component parts as follows:(1)the study on Sanjin culture during the pre-Qin periods;(2)the study on Bingzhou region from Qin to Yuan Dynasty;(3)the study on Shanxi society since Ming Dynasty.There are different research focuses within these different components.For example,the main task of Sanjin culture study is to investigate the relation between the primitive civilization and geographical environment in Sanjin region.

Abstract:China is one of countries suffering from most serious earthquake disaster. During the study of earthquake losses, we find the problems which exist in the current earthquake damage and losses assessment practice based on the parameters obtained from rapid determination of earthquake location, A group of 175 rapid seismic location data and relevant macroscopic epicenter ones since 1989 in main land China which distributed in East and West of China are collected and the statistical parameters of probability distribution of the deviation of rapid seismic location from the macroscopic epicenter are obtained, which obeys the two-dimensional normal distribution.

Abstract:Wavelet multi-scale analysis is applied to the research on Bouguer gravity field and the explanation of tectonic structure and deep faults in northeast China.Based on Bouguer gravity anomaly,the gravity field is decomposed into four scale by multi-scale wavelet decomposition method.Extracting the second and third order details which reflect the anomalies correlated with deep faults and enhancing faults' linear features by calculating the horizontal gradient in different directions.The results indicate 12 deep faults.Meanwhile,the paper interprets the characteristics of deep faults with the power spectrum method and the information of seism distribution,focal mechanism and geology.The result shows that 12 deep faults are divided into two types.One is the suture zone between massifs.The other plays a significant role in distribution and evolution of basin groups.Deep faults system has a predominant direction in NE,NNE and most of faults are strike-slip faults.According to the characteristics of wavelet multi-scale decomposition and the deep faults system,the paper divides the Bouguer gravity in to first-order and secondary anomaly regions and describes the characteristics of their Bouguer gravity fields.Xing' an massif and Erguena massif was first separated.The first-order gravity anomaly regions contains Erguena massif,Xing'an massif,Songnen massif,Kiamusze massif,Huabei massif.The secondary anomaly regions contains Erlian basin,Greater Khingan region,Lesser Khingan region,Songliao basin,Zhangguangcai region,Nadanhada block,Sanjiang basin,Huanan-muling region,Liaotung peninsula region,Huabei massif,Fracture zone.The result depicts the framework of tectonic units in northeast China.

Abstract:Using the intensity data of historical destructive earthquakes in Sichuan such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the Lushan earthquake, and the Jiuzhaigou earthquake, according to the statistical relationship of each seismic center intensity, magnitude, and radius of each intensity circle, this paper established attenuation relationships of the seismic intensity along the long axis, the short axis, and the average axis. Combining the regional seismotectonic characteristics and previous research results, the seismic intensity attenuation relationships have regional characteristics in the high mountains of northwest Sichuan, the Sichuan Basin and surrounding areas, the Southern Sichuan to the Sichuan–Yunnan junction, and the surrounding areas of the Xianshuihe fault. The result of this paper can be used in the practice of rapid assessment of the impact and loss of earthquake disasters.

Abstract:Based on the high quality ETM images and combining with macroscopic and outcrop-scale observations in the field, the authors proposed a new interpretation of the eastern section that past the Qilian Shan of the Altyn Tagh Fault. Four branch faults attached to the main fault are found with a considerable scale and left-lateral strike -slip. This paper concludes that the Altyn Tagh Fault, in a form of arborization, disappeared in the Jiuxi Basin and Huahai Basin.

Abstract:Shear-wave splitting is the most simple and direct seismic method to understand the anisotropic property of the earth.The result has important meaning in geodynamics and valuable in the research of earthquake prediction.The authors use the methods proposed by SC1991 and WS1998 to constrain the splitting parameters by analyzing SKS and SKKS phases.The records from 2001 to 2005 are provided by Chinese Seismology Network Center (CENC).Great discrepancies are observed.The splitting time in South-West,South,and North-West part of China is shorter than Middle and Middle-West part of China.Similar patterns between fast direction and GPS velocity direction show coupling effect between lithosphere and asthenosphere.Fast directions are also parallel to plate boundaries in convergent regions and identical to the strike of transcurrent fault.This may imply the coherent deformation between crust and mantle.The length of time window,the possibility of ray-splitting and the dependence of fast direction to back-azimuth are also discussed.

Abstract:By the analysis of the six conventional seismic phases(Pg,PmP,Pn,Sg,SmS,Sn,etc.) of earthquakes in the north China region,this article researches on its basic seismic phase characteristics.It analyzes the clear seismic-phase characteristics on the Eastern and Western Divisional regions in the north China region.By means of the layered structure characteristic of the earth's crust and the theoretical calculation of travel time,the paper analyzes and compares the results of the artificial seismic phase readings.It also points out the seismic network of conventional phase analysis should pay close attention to the depth of phase sPn in the north China region.The paper discusses the possibility of promoting the accuracy in determining focal depth.

Abstract:There exist several groups of seismogenic active faults at the conjoined areas of the Chuandian, Bayankala and Huanan active blocks along the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Owing to existence of transverse secondary active faults, the Chuandian Block can be further divided into the Middle Yunnan and Northwestern Sichuan sub-blocks, and the Longmenshan sub-block at the easternmost end of the Bayankala Block. Joint exploration of the crustal structure shows that low-velocity layers exist in the crust of the Chuandian and Bayankala Blocks. These low velocity layers correspond also to high conducting layers and they are the cause of frequent earthquake occurrence in the upper crust. Geologic study and GPS surveying indicate that the tectonic motion of the blocks in this region is accounted to be a complex or superimposition of three basic types of motions: southeastward sliding, rotating on vertical axis, and uplifting, but there is difference in the geologic slip rate and GPS rate. Besides, this paper collects the database of the geologic slip rates and GPS slip rates for the active faults in the region and major scientific problems are also discussed at last.
PRIMARY STUDY ON CORRELATION OF M_S≥7.0 EARTHQUAKES IN QINGHAI-TIBETBLOCK AND OTHER AREAS

Abstract:The correlation of the M-S≥7.0 earthquakes in Qinhai-Tibet block, Burma transform tectonic region and the southwestern of Yunnan region has been studied. The results show that the occurrence of earthquakes in Qinhai-Tibet block is not isolated, and the spatial-temporal correlation is very obvious. The main features are the clustering in time, the migrating in space and the orderliness in migratory route. In each cluster, the events usually first occurred in Burma transform tectonic region and the southwestern of Yunnan, then migrate to SN Seismic Belt or to Tibet. The migration has a complete pattern. This conclusions has a practical value for judging regional seismic tendency.
Study on the distribution of landslides triggered by the May 12,2008 Wenchuan earthquake in two square typical regions

Abstract:Tens of thousands of landslides were triggered by Wenchuan earthquake.The purpose of this study was to find correlations of landslide occurrence with formation lithology,slope gradient,elevation,peak ground acceleration,and distance from seismogenic fault in two selected landslide incidental areas(A /B),using spatial analysis methods.The results show that rock groups of graphite schist and quartzite had the most concentrated landslide activities in area A,while siltstone,sandstone,and chert rock groups in area B.The landslide susceptibility levels have a positive correlation with slope steepness in both the areas.The advantage slope gradient is 44°in area A and 38° in area B.There were also relations between elevation and earthquakeinduced landslide distribution.Peak ground acceleration has no positive or consistent correlation with earthquake-induced landslide occurrence,but the distance from seismogenic fault shows approximate positive correlation with landsliding.There is a higher landslide distribution area ratio on the upper plate than on the lower plate.

Abstract:Using continuous waveform data from 27 fixed seismic stations in Ningxia spanning nearly a decade from 2013 to September 2022, the automatic detection matching method (PALM) was employed to capture 34,373 seismic events across the region, which is twelve times more than manual cataloging during the same period. The events were used as a template to search for smaller seismic events in the Haiyuan-Liupanshan region. After location, a total of 14,741 microseismic events were detected. Based on this expanded dataset, we calculated b value and analysis the depth profiles of seismic. The findings indicate that the distribution of microseismicity has characteristics of zonation, clustering and interruption. Seismic activity aligns with active faults and closely correlates with tectonic zones. The areas with seismic gaps and low b -value zones indicate a higher stress level on the north side of the middle section of the Haiyuan Fault, which was also the epicenter of the magnitude 4.9 Pingchuan earthquake on December 31, 2023. The seismic profiles show that the regional earthquakes mainly occur at a depth of more than 30 km. The depth distribution of these earthquakes reflects the inclination of the fault and thus corresponds exactly to the actual conditions.

Seismic Potential Research along the North Fuyu Fault in Songyuan City

Abstract:The Fuyu—Zhaodong Fault is an important buried seismogenic fault in the Songliao Basin.In 1119A.D.an MS6.75 earthquake occurred on the fault,the largest ever recorded before the Haicheng earthquake of Northeast China in 1975.In 2006 and 2014 several earthquakes below MS6 .0 occurred along the fault;these recent earthquakes were mainly centralized on the north-east segment and the Chaganhua segment.Active faults were detected in Songyuan city from 2012 to 2014 and the northeast segment of the Fuyu—Zhaodong Fault was proven to cross downtown with a near-EW trend and showed obvious segmentation and independence.The urgency and importance of meticulous detection of the fault is obvious for this urban environment.Using three-dimensional geophysical data from oilfield and shallow geophysical prospecting,the space distribution and profile characteristics of this fault (named the north Fuyu Fault ) were determined.The combined methods of borehole detection and optical stimulated luminescence dating were also used to confirm the seismicity along the fault since late Pleistocene.Using the rupture scale of bedrock surface from the three-dimensional geophysical data,this paper estimates the seismic potential along the north Fuyu Fault and studies its probabilistic seismic risk using a probabilistic calculation method.A Poisson probability model is adopted and quantitative parame-ters,such as maximum magnitude,recurrence period,and occurrence probability in the coming 50~200 years,are calculated.This presents a breakthrough in the study of potential seismogenic faults that have few historical earthquake records and long return periods.
Bayesian probabilities of earthquake occurrences in Shanxi rift system (China)

Abstract:China has a long history of earthquake records. The Shanxi rift system (SRS) is situated along the axial zone of the domal uplift of the Shanxi Highlands and is the boundary between the Ordos block and the North China Plain block. Strong earthquakes in the SRS have been recorded since the thirteenth century. In our work, we applied the Bayesian probability method using extreme value distribution of earthquake occurrences to estimate the seismic hazard in the SRS. The seismic moment, slip rate, earthquake recurrence rate, and magnitude were considered as the basic parameters for computing the Bayesian prior estimates of the seismicity. These estimates were then updated in terms of Bayes’ theorem and historical estimates of seismicity in the SRS. The probability of occurrence of M_s = 5.0 for Z 1, Z 2, and Z 3 is less than 0.3, 0.1, and 0.6, respectively ( T = 5 years). The probability of the occurrence of M ≥ 8.0 is small for the whole SRS. The selection of upper bound magnitude probably influences the result, and the upper bound magnitude of Z 1, Z 2, and Z 3 may be 7.5, 7.0, and 8.5, respectively. We obtained the values of the magnitude of completeness M c (3.2) and the Gutenberg–Richter b value before applying the Bayesian extreme value distribution of earthquake occurrences method.
Research of seismicity simulation method and its application in Taiyuan Region of China

Abstract:In this study, we improved the seismic activity simulation method by using the fault rupture velocity derived from GPS data as stress loading to simulate the seismicity of the region. The new model was applied to simulate the seismic activity in the Taiyuan region of Northern China. A synthetic catalogue over 20000 years was simulated with the simplified fault model of Taiyuan Region, and the magnitude-frequency curve of the simulated catalogue matches well with that of observed catalogue. According to the analysis of the simulated synthetic seismic catalogue, occurrence of strong earthquakes with magnitude over 6. 0 was rather random and very close to the Poisson process with seismic rate 0.0129a(-1). The time process of simulated earthquakes of magnitude over 6. 0 showed a confidence level up to 99. 0% as regarding the correlation with a Poisson process of lambda=0.0129. However, the simulated earthquakes on individual faults in the region cannot be approximated by Poisson model. The confidence level was about 90% on some faults, but it was almost zero on other faults. Thus, it was reasonable to estimate the long-term seismicity for the whole region rather than to estimate that for an individual fault in the region. In terms of the result of seismicity simulation, the recurrence period of strong earthquakes with magnitude over 7. 0 in Taiyuan Region was 4000 years.

Abstract:2158 Pn phase arriving times have been picked from the earthquake waveform recodings of Heilongjiang Digital Seismic Network for 2000—2010,and 10641 Pn phase arriving times have been collected from Annual Bulletin of Chinese Earthquakes for 1985—2008.Pn velocity structure in Northeast China has been inverted.The main results show that the relation between Pn velocity structure and regional tectonic structure is close.The Pn velocities in the areas with the volcano activities are obviously low.The Pn velocity of the songliao basin is higher than of its neighboring areas.Most of strong earthquakes occurre in low Pn velocity areas,which implies that the visco-plasticity of the top-mantle material might play an important role on transferring the tectonic stress to the upper crust.

Abstract:Quantitative study on the geomorphic indices has been carried out on five gullies in the middle of northern front of Liulengshan Mountain.The abnormal values of the indices,including stream length-gradient index(SL index),hypsometric integral(HI),and index of drainage basin shape(Bs),reveal that the evolution of the five gullies has obvious relationship with the neotectonic movement along the northern front of Liulengshan Mountain and the drainage basins are currently in the mature period of geomorphic evolution.The field investigation of the Qiulin gully tests demonstrates the Late Quaternary activities of the fault along the northern front of Liulengshan Mountain.
