Abstract:The localization of a duststorm source is one of the most difficult scientific problems on numerical simulation of the long distance transport process of airborne dust. Traditionally, the duststorm sources are analyzed with a chemical composition analysis method. However, sampling error and uncertainty problem of the composition variation during the large￣scale and long distance transport process in the atmosphere makes the operability of traditional method not strong. In this paper, using a new Lagrangian backward tracing method based on the observed and forecasting data of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the numerical simulation for a duststorm event on April 9, 2003 has been analyzed. The results indicate that the main airborne dust for the duststorm event comes from Kurban Tonggute desert.

Abstract:The numerical simulation on the long distance process of a dust-storm event based on conputer science need us to couple a long distance transporting model with a meteorological model. Here we show a numerical simulation study for a dust-storm event in 2003. In this study, a long distance transporting model, called Hysplit-4 model by NOAA,USA, has been coupled with a meteorological model,called MM5v3 by NCAR,USA.The simulation results show us that the simulated concentration fields in 24h can be regard as an acceptable numerical simulation result, however, with the integration time increasing up to 48hours, the numerical simulation results can not be acceptable as a good simulated result. After checking the vertical structure of the simulated concentration field, we found that the discontinuity of the concentration field in space may be responsible for this bad performance of numerical simulation results. Some discussions about solving this problem are also explained at the end of this paper.

Abstract:The model HYSPLIT-4 is used to simulate the long distance transportation of a dust storm occurring on 9 April,2003 in Northwest China.The track and concentration of this event are analyzed.Results show that:(1) The original airborne dust,which is responsible for the dust storm event on 9 April,2003,came from more than one desert area.(2)In the process of the long distance of this dust storm event,there are two high concentration centers transporting eastward.One is located in the latitude 35 degrees north,which transfers at an altitude between 1 500 and 3 000 meters which the other is located in the latitude 40 degrees north which transports below 1 500 meter.At last they merged.

Abstract:This paper presents the two-dimensional numerical simulation of dust transport by wind, which makes use of the software FLUENT according to the feature of sand-dust storm — gas-solid two-phase flow. At the same time, the influence of flow boundary condition is analyzed. This paper develops a new volume concentration expression of jump-starting sand, which is also as the boundary condition in the course of simulation. The simulating results, such as the distributions of sand volume concentration, bring the behavior of gas-solid two-phase flow to light. At the same time, show out the alteration regulars of sand volume concentration under the effects of particle size and wind velocity.
Numerical Simulations of Dust Weather in China Using a Regional Climate Model

Abstract:Most recent numerical prediction models of dust storm are based on mesoscale numerical model and are nested in one-way mode within dust emission scheme.These models are not suitable to simulation of long-range transport process of dust events and feedback of dust aerosol on meteorological field.In this paper,temporal and spatial characteristics of dust weather in 2001 were simulated using a high resolution regional climate model.Simulation results show that the model has well performance on simulation of the sand source distribution and the seasonal variation of dust events.Vertical distribution of four dust grain size groups shows that both the soil particle size and the topography have significant effect on dust emission.The main components of dust in north China are macro particles exceed 5 m and in south China are particles less than 1 m.The model also has well performance on simulation of transmission paths from different sand sources and on different time scales.
Numerical Studies on a Severe Dust Storm in East Asia Using WRF-Chem

Abstract:Dust storm is one of the important natural disasters, which can have significant impact on terrestrial ecosystem, global climate, air quality and human health. In Mar. 19-23, 2010, a serious dust storm occurred over East Asia. It started from Mongolia, initially extending to the east, turning to the South of China, then back to the Northeast Asia. About 20% of the areas in China suffered from this severe dust event and the air was heavily polluted with massive airborne particulates. The Air Pollution Index (API) in many cities exceeded 500 when dust storm passed by, while the maximum surface PM10 concentration reached 1900 µg/m3 in east area. The coarse particles were dominated in PM10, with fine particles named as PM2.5 only accounting for 5% - 20% at cities along the dust moving track in South and East China. MODIS and CALIPSO satellite data were used to investigate the horizontal and vertical patterns of optical parameters of dust aerosol. The average AOD reached 2 - 2.5 on dust days in most southeast regions. The dust can be transported up to 5 Km with maximum aerosol extinction coefficient of 0.35 - 0.4 at 1 - 3 Km in vertical. Synoptic weather was analyzed to understand the meteorological conditions and the backward trajectories were calculated to investigate the movements of air mass. The WRF-Chem model (Version 3.2) was applied to simulate the transport and deposition of the dust aerosols. The performance of Shaw (2008) and Chin (2002) parameterization schemes for dust emissions in WRF-Chem were evaluated. Modeling results were compared with the CUACE-Dust and RegCCMS. Investigations show that WRF-Chem has capability on simulations on dust emission, long range transport and deposition. Shaw (2008) scheme gives more reasonable spatial distribution of dust aerosols, while Chin (2002) scheme presents more better results in terms of PM10 surface concentration simulation. It is suggested that two schemes can be used at the same time in terms of simulation of dust pattern and concentration.

Abstract:Sandstorm is a catastrophic natural phenomenon. To quantitative modeling and realistic rendering of sandstorm are of great significance in environment protection, disaster rescue, urban traffic and special effects synthesis in films & TV, etc. This paper presents a parametric modeling method of sandstorm based meteorology. In particular, by analyzing the correlation between the up-flow and temperature field, we provide a simplified model to simulate the process of sand raising and flow. Different sandstorm under various circumstances can be simulated by specifying their corresponding parameters such as air pressure, temperature, dust density, the type of surroundings, etc, To real-time render the sandstorm scene, we adopt the half-angle slice based volume rendering method, which greatly reduces the computation cost. Our simulation results of different degree sandstorms in deserts and cities demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Finally, we employ the meteorological computing model to evaluate the air visibility of the synthesized sandstorm scenes.
Numerical simulation on climate characteristics of global dust aerosol transport process

Abstract:Dust-storm events during March and April in 2001 are simulated by a global aerosol transport model (MATCH) coupled with the Dust Entrainment and Deposition Model (DEAD). The results show that the simulated dust sources and transmission paths in spring agree with observation. Analysis of dust emission and deposition shows that dry deposition process is the major mode for the decrease of dust concentration, and the turbulence settling amount is greater than the gravitational deposition. Wet deposition is the fundamental mode to affect the regions far away from dust source area. As for global dust storm, the size of the dominant dust particles is 1-2.5μm, and particles of 0-1μm and 2.5-5μm take the second place. However, the size of dominant dust particles over China is 1-2.5μm, 2.5-5um and 5-11μm. Dust particles of 0-1μm have little contribution to total dust emission. Comparison of simulated result and EP-TOMS aerosol index also shows that the MATCH&DEAD coupled model has well simulation performance on the characteristics of synoptic-scale dust-storm events. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:Based on an advanced dust devil-scale large-eddy simulation (LES) model, the atmosphere flow of a modeled dust devil in a quasi-steady state was first simulated to illustrate the characteristics of the gas phase field in the mature stage, including the prediction of the lower pressure and higher temperature in the vortex core. The dust-lifting physics is examined in two aspects. Through the experimental data analysis, it is verified again that the horizontal swirling wind can only make solid particles saltate along the ground surface. Based on a Lagrangian reference frame, the tracks of dust grains with different density (material) and diameter are calculated to show the effect of dust particles entrained by the vertical swirling wind field. The movement of solid particles depends on the interactions between the aloft dust particles and the airflow field of dust devils, in which the drag and the centrifugal force component on the horizontal plane are the key force components. There is the trend of the fine dust grains rising along the inner helical tracks while the large dust grains are lifting along the outer helical tracks and then descending beyond the corner region, resulting in the impact between different-sized dust grains in the swirling atmospheric flow. This trend will make the dust stratification, developing a top small-sized grain domain and a bottom large-sized grain domain in dust devils.

Abstract:Dust storms that occurred in East Asia during the spring of 2002 and 2003 were simulated by a regional dust deflation and transport model. Particular focus was placed on dust incursion events over Taiwan. Two of the events were analyzed in detail to give a complete picture of the three dimensional transport patterns. The general characteristics of dust incursion events were summarized, including the source locations, transport route and distribution pattern in three dimensions, traveling time, duration of incursion, and the seasonal spatial distribution of dust concentration. Significant differences were also found in these characteristics between the two years, the main cause of which was a change. in regional climate patterns. The performance of the model developed for this study was evaluated against other dust forecast models, and found to have superior capability for forecasting in the Taiwan area.

Abstract:On 2 June 2014, at about 13 UTC, a dust storm arrived in Tehran as a severe hazard that caused injures, deaths, failures in power supply, and traffic disruption. Such an extreme event is not considered as common for the Tehran area, which has raised the question of the dust storm’s origin and the need for increasing citizens’ preparedness during such events. The analysis of the observational data and numerical simulations using coupled dust-atmospheric models showed that intensive convective activity occurred over the south and southwest of Tehran, which produced cold downdrafts and, consequently, high-velocity surface winds. Different dust source masks were used as an input for model hindcasts of the event (forecasts of the past event) to show the capability of the numerical models to perform high-quality forecasts in such events and to expand the knowledge on the storm’s formation and progression. In addition to the proven capability of the models, if engaged in operational use to contribute to the establishment of an early warning system for dust storms, another conclusion appeared as a highlight of this research: abandoned agricultural areas south of Tehran were responsible for over 50% of the airborne dust concentration within the dust storm that surged through Tehran. Such a dust source in the numerical simulation produced a PM10 surface dust concentration of several thousand μm/m3, which classifies it as a dust source hot-spot. The produced evidence indivisibly links issues of land degradation, extreme weather, environmental protection, and health and safety.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:Fluid flow and dust transportation in a realistic urban residential community under dust storm weather conditions are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a grid resolution of several meters. The dust transportation and concentration distribution are obtained through the Lagrangian-formulated discrete particle model by integrating the particle velocity between certain time intervals. The fluid flow is solved by the realizable k - epsilon model. It is found that the dust transportation and distribution are very closely related to the flow field. The flow field in a real residential community is very complicated. When the building axes are perpendicular to the wind direction, the flows resemble the classic street canyon flow. Places with a low wind speed and high vorticity usually have a high dust concentration. As the wind direction changes, the fluid flow and dust distribution differ from case to case, but the general features are kept. In addition, the building shape and particle-wall interaction conditions have additional effects on the dust distribution, which need further study in the future.

Abstract:This study conducted real-time and synchronous measurements on the wind velocities and dust concentrations at various heights during several dust storms passing through the desertified land in northwest China. Under near-neutral stratification conditions, Original data were filtered strictly with the anomalous-point exclusion method and stabilization analysis. Wavelet analysis on the stream-wise wind energy spectrum reveal that there exist Large Scale Motions (LSMs) and Very Large Scale Motions (VLSMs) in the flow fields of dust storms, and the VLSMs above 8m dominate the transport of PM10 in the near-surface layer during dust storms.

Abstract:Dust emission refers to the spatial displacement process of soil particles with the influence of wind. The quantitative and accurate description of dust emission is the basis of dust simulation in the modeling. The previous studies always employed static land cover in the numerical models, ignoring dynamic variations in the surface bareness and leading to large uncertainties in the dust simulation. We build six sets of dynamic dust sources functions, which shows a pronounced monthly and annual variability with the influence of seasonal change. Compared that in July, the dynamic dust source in March shows an expanding pattern to the edge of the deserts. Moreover, the dust source function in the Taklimakan Desert and Gobi Desert decrease at an annual rate of 2.42 × 10 -4 and 3.06 × 10 -4 . The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled to Chemistry (WRF-Chem) coupled with dynamic dust sources can effectively reproduce the spatiotemporal distribution of aerosol within satellite and ground-based observations. Our results show that the surface bareness and topographic characteristics jointly control the spatial distribution and value of dynamic dust sources. Further, the dynamic change of dust source further affects the dust emission and dust cycle. This study highlights the importance of surface bareness and the topographic characteristics on the dynamic dust source, and effectively improves dust cycle simulation over East Asia.

Monte Carlo Simulation of the Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in the Duststorm

Abstract:Monte Carlo simulations of the extinction rate of electromagnetic wave propagation in the duststorm were presented. The numerical procedure was based on the multiple scattering and independent scattering. The calculated multiple scattering attenuation rate is in good agreement with the measured one, but differs significantly from those obtained under the independent scattering assumption. At the same time, the factors of size parameter, frequency of incident wave, the angle of incident, and sands permittivity and water content have been considered in the attenuation of electromagnetic wave propagation in the duststorm. Numerical results obtained showed that the attenuation rate increases as the fractional volume, frequency of incident wave and sands permittivity increase, and as the angle of incident increases, the attenuation rate decreases.

Abstract:A numerical model of single-particle fog-dust collision coupling in a high-speed airflow based on three-phase flow theory. The effect of the fog-to-dust particle size ratio, relative velocity between the fog and dust particles, collision angle and contact angle at the wetting humidity function of dust particles is investigated. Different particle size ratios are determined for achieving the optimal wetting humidity for the interaction of high-velocity aerosols with dust particles of different sizes, for differ, that is, kPM2.5 = 2:1, kPM10 = 3.5:1 and kPM20 = 1.5:1. The optimal humidity increases with the relative velocity U between the fog and dust particles in the high-speed airflow. The larger the collision angle is, the lower the wetting rate is.The smaller the contact angle between the solid and liquid is, the better droplet wetting on dust is. The fine kinetic mechanism of single-particle fog-dust collision-coupling in a high-speed airflow is elucidated in this study.

Abstract:Dust storms in North China result in high concentrations of airborne dust particles, which cause detrimental effects on human health as well as social and economic losses and environmental degradation. To investigate the impact of land surface processes on dust storms, we simulate two dust storm events in North China during spring 2002 using two versions of a dust storm prediction system developed by the Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Beijing, China. The primary difference between the IAP Sandstorm Prediction System (IAPS 1.0) and more recent version (IAPS 2.0) is the land surface modeling. IAPS 1.0 is based on the Oregon State University (OSU) land surface model, whereas the latest version of the dust storm prediction (IAPS 2.0) uses NOAH land surface schemes for land surface modeling within a meteorological model, MM5. This work investigates whether the improved land surface modeling affects modeling of sandstorms. It is shown that an integrated sandstorm management system can be used to aid the following tasks: ensure sandstorm monitoring and warning; incorporate weather forecasts; ascertain the risk of a sandstorm disaster; integrate multiple technologies (for example, GIS, remote sensing, and information processing technology); track the progress of the storm in real-time; exhibit flexibility, accuracy and reliability (by using multiple sources of data, including in-situ meteorological observations); and monitor PM10 and PM2.5 dust concentrations in airborne dustfalls. The results indicate that with the new land surface scheme, the simulation of soil moisture is greatly improved, leading to a better estimate of the threshold frictional velocity, a key parameter for the estimating surface dust emissions. In this study, we also discuss specific mechanisms by which land surface processes affect dust storm modeling and make recommendations for further improvements to numerical dust storm simulations.

Abstract:Introducing the surface properties [initial vortex, ground temperature and surface momentum impact height (SMIH)] for the boundary conditions, dust-devil-scale large eddy simulations (LES) were carried out. Given three parameters of initial vortex, ground temperature and the SMIH based on Sinclair’s observation, the dust devil physical characteristics, such as maximum tangential velocity, updraft velocity, pressure drop in the inner core region, and even reverse flow at the top of the core region, are predicted, and are found to be close to the observations, thus demonstrating the ability of the simulation. The physical characteristics of different modeled dust devils are reproduced and compared to the values predicted by Renno et al.’ theory. Even for smaller temperature differences or weaker buoyancy, severe dust devils may be formed by strong incipient vortices. It is also indicated that SMIH substantially affects the near-surface shape of terrestrial dust devils.

Abstract:A model, coupling metrological dynamic model MM5 and dust transport model, is developed for the atmosphere-particle two phases flow of dust storm. The simulations of the dust storm events in north China with a geographic information database are performed using the model, and represent an overview of dust transport pathways and particles concentration distribution over the north China. The comparison between computations and practical observations shows that the simulations succeed in description of dust storm evolvement and particle transport behavior. Based on the computations and analysis, the characteristics of particle transport, especially well-concerning the factor of the particle thermal diffusion, are studied. A new definition of mass transfer Grd is put forward to discover the internal principle of particle thermal diffusion at various atmospheric layers. Several phenomena, such as thermal diffusion item QT–Grd distribution, and relationships, Particle Grd probability function, are obtained. The investigation indicates particle thermal diffusion can be not ignored in mesoscale atmospheric-particle multiphase flow.

Abstract:Dust storms have occurred frequently in northwest China and can dramatically reduce visibility and exacerbate air quality in downwind regions through long-range transport. In order to study the distribution characteristics of dust particles sizes, structures and concentrations in the process of dust storm, especially for the vertical distributions, the multi-observation platform composed of six Lidars and nine aerosol analytical instruments is first used to detect a severe dust storm event, which occurred in Northwest China on 3 May 2020. As a strong weather system process, the dust storm has achieved high intensity and wide range. When the intensity of a dust storm is at its strongest, the ratios of PM2.5 (particulate matter with diameter < 2.5 μm) and PM10 (particulate matter with diameter < 10 μm) (PM2.5/PM10) in cities examined were less than 0.2 and the extinction coefficients became greater than 1 km−1 based on Lidar observations. In addition, the growth rates of PM2.5 were higher than that of PM10. The dust particles mainly concentrated at heights of 2 km, after being transported about 200–300 km, vertical height increased by 1–2 km. Meanwhile, the dust concentration decreased markedly. Furthermore, the depolarization ratio showed that dust in the Tengger Desert was dominated by spherical particles. The linear relationships between 532 nm extinction coefficient and the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 were found firstly and their R2 were 0.706 to 0.987. Our results could give more information for the physical schemes to simulate dust storms in specific models, which could improve the forecast of dust storms.
