Abstract:This paper investigates upstream resource allocation problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access Passive Optical Networks (OFDMA-PON). One assignment problem with subcarrier channel utilization and Total Grant Time (TGT) is analyzed and formulated. The Shortest Request First Scheduling (SRF) algorithm and Greedy Scheduling Algorithm (GSA) are demonstrated and evaluated through simulations. The results show that the proposed algorithms achieve less TGT and higher channel utilization compared with traditional sequence scheme.

Abstract:Scheduling algorithm for OFDMA system plays an important role in supporting users' diverse QoS requirements, especially for real-time service. In this paper, we propose a delay-aware opportunistic scheduling algorithm (DAOS) that can guarantee QoS requirement for real-time service and provide effective fairness among all users. The benefit is attained from utilizing queue state information (QSI) and channel state information (CSI) jointly and updating scheduling parameters during subchannel allocation procedure. Simulation results illustrate that the max packet loss ratio and delay are both improved by the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a heterogeneous network framework involved an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) network with an out-of-band Ad Hoc network, which maybe a promising architectural upgrade and has not been studied so far. In the heterogeneous system, the mobile stations (MSs) are dual-mode with both cellular OFDMA and Ad Hoc radios. And MSs communicate with the base station by cellular OFDMA mode, while they communicate with each other by Ad Hoc mode. An active MS can choose multiple inactive MSs as its relay stations (RSs). And each RS operates in a full duplex mode, that is, it can receive data through Ad Hoc network in the first hop and transmit data through the OFDMA network in the second hop, simultaneously. Based on this heterogeneous system, the problem of joint relay selection, subcarrier and power allocation with the objective of maximizing the system capacity under individual rate and transmit power constraints is addressed. We propose a dual-based resource allocation scheme to solve the problem fairly and efficiently, and then we propose a fully distributed resource allocation scheme to decrease the computational complexity. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed dual-based resource allocation scheme, in terms of the system capacity and the outage probability, is better than that of the fully distributed resource allocation scheme. However, the performance improvement is at the expense of a high computational complexity.

Abstract:We propose a resource allocation algorithm for OFDM system to provide QoS guarantee for unicast and multicast service concurrently. The optimization objective is to maximize the sum rate of the unicast service under the constraint of both the total power and the minimal rate provision of the multicast service, which can be solved by traditional two-step approach. To decrease the complexity, a greedy-based algorithm is proposed. According to the theoretical analysis and the simulation results, the performance of the proposed algorithm is close to the two-step approach meanwhile the complexity is effectively decreased. In conclusion, the proposed algorithm can balance the performance and the complexity well and so is suitable to be applied to practical scenario.

Abstract:The adaptive subcarrier and bit allocation in OFDMA systems supporting multiple services is investigated. A suboptimal algorithm is developed, which aims to maximize the system throughput under the overall transmit power constraint while guaranteeing the QoS requirement of realtime users and supporting proportional fairness among non-realtime users. Firstly, the algorithm allocates subcarriers and power to realtime users so that the required power for them is minimized and the average power per subcarrier of realtime users is approximately equal to that of non-realtime users. Then, the remaining subcarriers and power are allocated to non-realtime users by a proposed rate adaptive resource allocation algorithm, which achieves a suboptimal overall throughput while providing proportional fairness among users. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performances than existing algorithms.

Abstract:Adaptive resource allocation algorithms for single and multi-user uplink OFDM access system are addressed. Firstly, the optimization problem of rate-sum capacity is formulated, considering the restriction of integer bit constellation in practice. Then, a fast bit allocation algorithm is proposed for single user OFDM system, which allocates a certain number of bits using water-filling approach and distributes the remaining power via greedy method, subsequently. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is much lower than that of the greedy algorithm. Finally, a novel subcarrier and bit allocation algorithm is proposed for the multi-user case. It first determines the assignment of subcarriers to different users and then allocates bits to the assigned subcarriers via the above fast bit allocation algorithm for each single user. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher spectral efficiency, in comparison with the other existing algorithms.

Abstract:An efficient power allocation algorithm for OFDMA-based cognitive radio (CR) systems with the total power limitation, interference constraint, and proportional fairness requirement is proposed. While solving the optimization problem with multiple constraints is computationally infeasible, we exploit the structure of the nonlinear equations to obtain an approximate solution. It can fairly allocate power among the second users (SUs) with significantly reduced complexity. Furthermore, we replace the traditional water-filling (WF) algorithm with a much faster alternative that can avoid repeated iterations to facilitate subcarrier power allocation within a single SU. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm can maintain a higher capacity, while effectively ensure the fairness among SUs compared with the referenced algorithms.

Abstract:A novel cross-layer wireless resource allocation scheme is proposed for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) system based on IEEE 802.16e Wireless MAN. With the assumption of a finite queue model, a distinct scheduling priority is defined for each user integrates MAC QoS requirements, queue status and PHY Channel State Information (CSI). Using these scheduling priorities, a scheduling rule for mixed traffics is proposed. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is efficient in terms of average system throughput, packet losing probability, and system fairness, while improving each user's QoS performance.

Abstract:OFDM modulation and multihop transmission are two important techniques for future wireless networks. This paper discusses the adaptive subcarrier and power allocation in OFDM based multihop networks. Both OFDM-TDMA and OFDM-FDMA access methods are considered. For OFDM-TDMA based multihop networks, a power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the end-to-end capacity for the constraint of the overall transmit power of all hops. For OFDM-FDMA based multihop networks, a joint subcarrier and power allocation algorithm is proposed. The performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated, in both symmetric case (each hop has same average channel gain) and asymmetric case (the hops have different average channel gain). The results show that the OFDM-FDMA access method achieves a higher end-to-end capacity than the OFDM-TDMA access method, and the proposed adaptive resource allocation algorithms perform better than the fixed resource allocation strategy, in both cases

Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is an efficient multiple access method for the future wireless systems. This paper studies the adaptive subcarrier and bit allocation problem in OFDMA systems to support heterogeneous services. The goal of the considered resource optimization technique is to maximize the total system throughput under the overall transmit power constraint while guaranteeing the QoS requirement of realtime users and supporting proportional fairness among non-realtime users. First, we introduce a Rate Adaptive (RA) resource allocation algorithm for non-realtime users and a Margin Adaptive (MA) algorithm for realtime users. Then, based on the previous algorithms, a novel algorithm is proposed to allocate the resource to both classes of users, which makes an efficient tradeoff between the resource usage of realtime users and non-realtime users. The algorithm is locally optimal solution provided that the MA and RA algorithms are utilized. Also, to reduce the computational complexity, a suboptimal method based on the balancing of the average power per subcarrier is also introduced. Monte Carlo simulation results show that all the proposed algorithms outperform the existing counterparts. The results also show that the suboptimal method for heterogeneous services can efficiently reduce the computational complexity at the cost of very little performance degradation.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA-PON) has being considered as a promising solution for next generation PONs due to its high spectral efficiency and flexible bandwidth allocation scheme. In order to take full advantage of these merits of OFDMA-PON, a high-efficiency medium access control (MAC) dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme is needed. In this paper, we propose two DBA algorithms which can act on two different stages of a resource allocation process. To achieve higher bandwidth utilization and ensure the equity of ONUs, we propose a DBA algorithm based on frame structure for the stage of physical layer mapping. Targeting the global quality of service (QoS) of OFDMA-PON, we propose a full-range DBA algorithm with service level agreement (SLA) and class of service (CoS) for the stage of bandwidth allocation arbitration. The performance of the proposed MAC DBA scheme containing these two algorithms is evaluated using numerical simulations. Simulations of a 15Gbps network with 1024 sub-carriers and 32 ONUs demonstrate the maximum network throughput of 14.87Gbps and the maximum packet delay of 1.45ms for the highest priority CoS under high load condition.

Abstract:With rapid growth of Internet applications, supporting differentiated service and enlarging system capacity have been new tasks for next generation access system. In recent years, research in OFDMA Passive Optical Networks (PON) has experienced extraordinary development as for its large capacity and flexibility in scheduling. Although much work has been done to solve hardware layer obstacles for OFDMA PON, scheduling algorithm on OFDMA PON system is still under primary discussion. In order to support QoS service on OFDMA PON system, a novel dynamic wavelength bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Per-stream QoS service is supported in this algorithm. Through simulation, we proved our bandwidth allocation algorithm performs better in bandwidth utilization and differentiate service support.

Abstract:Joint subcarrier, power and rate allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) scheduling is investigated for both downlink and uplink wireless transmissions. Using a time-sharing argument, a convex formulation is obtained avoiding the NP-hardness of the usual 0-1 integer program solution. It is rigourously established that the optimal allocation can be obtained almost surely through a greedy water-filling approach with linear complexity in the number of users and subcarriers. Stochastic approximation is further employed to develop on-line algorithms which are capable of dynamically learning the underlying channel distribution and asymptotically converges to the off-line optimal solution from arbitrary initial values.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the downlink resource scheduling with quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning in orthogonal-requency-division multiplexing (OFDM) networks. In homogeneous networks, the multi-user diversity gain is achievable through exploiting the independent fading among users. However, in heterogeneous networks, the different priorities and QoS constraints of heterogeneous services, especially delay sensitive services, bring to inferior system performance. To solve this problem, a utility-based adaptive multi-frame iterative (AMI) algorithm aware of both channel and queue state information is proposed. The AMI algorithm contains two parts: the core and the iterative shell. In the core, the problem of dynamic subcarrier assignment (DSA) is modeled as the weighted independent set (WIS) problem in graph theory. Through joint optimization among subcarriers, a higher spectral efficiency is achieved. In the iterative shell, intra-frame and inter-frame iterations exploit the time diversity, thus a lower packet loss is achieved.

Abstract:The paper discusses the fair resource sharing of adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The multi-channel nature of OFDM and the variance of the wireless channel make it difficult for efficient resource scheduling algorithms to maximize the total system throughput while providing fairness among all users. Thus, a suboptimal fair resource scheduling (FRS) algorithm is proposed. At each step of the algorithm, the user with the least normalized transmit rate is allowed to choose a subcarrier, and the subcarrier with the highest utilization efficiency to that user is selected. Numerical simulation results show that a high throughput is achieved, and that the service fairness index is guaranteed to be within a hard upper bound. Furthermore, it is observed that the throughput is degraded when a user in poor channel condition has a large resource share weight. To mitigate the inefficiency, a subcarrier number limited fair resource scheduling (SNL-FRS) algorithm is proposed.

Abstract:The rate adaptive resource optimization problem in OFDMA systems is addressed. A novel cross-layer subcarrier and bit allocation algorithm is proposed, which aims to maximize the system throughput with the overall transmit power constraint and user rate proportionality constraint. Different from existing non-cross-layer methods, the algorithm makes allocation policy based on not only channel condition but also queue status of each user. The algorithm consists of two steps. Firstly, subcarriers are assigned to users under the proportional rate constraint and queue length constraint, assuming that the power is uniformly allocated on each subcarrier. In the second step, the overall power is allocated via a proposed proportional greedy algorithm, with the consideration of buffer state information as well, which can increase the power usage efficiency in some cases. Simulation results show that the proposed cross-layer algorithm achieves a better performance than existing non-cross-layer algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a new resource management algorithm with delay constraints in cognitive OFDMA Systems. Our objective is to give priority to the high real-time cognitive user in the allocation of the channel in the first scheduling slot, maximize multiple cognitive users' weighted rate sum by jointly adjusting their frequency and power resource, under the constraints of multiple primary users' interference powers. Let cognitive users with high delay demanding avoid to participate in the high complexity competition of the channel or easier to get more bandwidth, in which cognitive users have a bigger transmission rate. So it can be faster to access to the channel which means it cost less time to prepare to transmission or has a faster rate. The results show that you can effectively prevent the ineffective resource allocation because of the delay, thus, optimize network transmission.
