Abstract:Conventional elastic-plastic theory can determine the displacement and stress fi elds of a stable structure under proper boundary and loading conditions but cannot deal with unstable structures. Therefore, it is diffi cult to determine effective reinforcements associated with structural instability. As an extension of conventional elastic-plastic theory, Deformation Reinforcement Theory (DRT) presents stability criterion for elastic-plastic structures and suggests effective reinforcements to prevent instability. The core of DRT is the principle of minimum plastic complementary energy (PCE): elastic-plastic structures deform trending to the state of minimum PCE, or to take full advantage of their bearing capacities while minimizing the required reinforcements. DRT is easily implemented in fi nite element method (FEM) while also improving FEM by revealing the physical meanings of the unbalanced force and the modifi ed Newton-Raphson algorithm. The engineering signifi cance of DRT is illuminated that the conventional action-resistance system in engineering design is promoted to the action-resistance-reinforcement system, where reinforcement fully describes the difference of action and resistance.
