Abstract:In China,development of metropolitan areas has become one of the most significant strategies for its future planning.But as the spatial structure and organization of urban system turn on some systematical,complicated and self-organized regularity,which makes researches on it difficult.Fractal theory,being the leading and hotspot of current urban geography studies,has a strong ability for analysis of spatial evolution and transformation.It is also very useful when we investigate the complex spatial evolution rules of urban system.This paper takes Wuhan metropolitan area as an example,firstly,we build an economic contacts intensity model to demonstrate the intensity and effect scope of the external contact of Wuhan city,and then we compute the economic attaching degree of each city of it.Basing on the results of these two indices,with reference to spatial changes of flux,distance and connectivity of these cities,the scope of Wuhan metropolitan area is finally defined as “3 circles 15 cities".With the aid of GIS,we then analyze the rank-size and spatial distribution structure of the urban system of Wuhan metropolitan area by two fractal dimensions:the first one is urban system rank-size fractal dimension which can help us to evaluate its equilibrium degree.it was turned out that the size distribution of its urban population and constructed area fits well to Zipf rule,Wuhan metropolitan area is on the phase of low-grade polarization;the second fractal dimension is correlation dimension which is used to deeply analysis its urban system spatial distribution.It is found that in special spatial-temporal scope,the spatial extension of Wuhan metropolitan area is stochastic fractal and its fractal dimension is intergraded.In the end,we investigate the spatial organization of Wuhan metropolitan area.It is proved that the rank and size of it are multi-polar and the scope of it is extended through many different axis,its layers are zonal propelled So we can conclude that the characters of Wuhan metropolitan are as follows:(1)its changes of economic attaching degree and spatial scope are mutual coupled;(2)the primary ration of this urban system is a little high,cities' hierarchies don't match their sizes with the centripetal system as the main trend and Wuhan as its core;(3)its cities are significantly distributed along axis and a little highly dense,with an uneven and relative compacted spatial structure.In the future,in order to realize the abrupt rising of the middle part of China,we should:(1)prompt the development of the outer layer of wuhan metropolitan area such as Xingyang city,Yueyang city,Jiujiang city and so on;(2)encourage city alliance to promote Multi-Polarization development of urban system;(3)construct 3-level development axis,they are east-west main city aggregation axis,south-north subaltern city aggregation axis and northwest-southeast development axis;(3)speed up the development of spatial organization strategy of Wuhan metropolitan area.Which means promote the development progress of cities around Wuhan city.
