Abstract:Abstract In order to scientifically predict the passenger throughput of civil aviation airports. The paper taked Hefei Xinqiao International Airport as the research object, comprehensively considers multi-source data such as GDP, permanent population, airport competition, and spatial distance, used multiple linear regression, gravity-regression and other methods to construct a prediction model, and the results were obtained by different methods. The prediction result errors were compared and analyzed. The results of the study show GDP and population are important factors affecting the passenger throughput of civil aviation airports. The multiple linear regression model that considers the factors affecting airport competition can improve the accuracy of prediction, and the gravity-regression model can effectively predict the passenger throughput of civil aviation airports.

Abstract:In recent years, China’s economy has developed rapidly and the people’s living standards have continued to improve. A high-end means of transportation, airplanes, is favored and accepted by more and more people with its advantages of comfort, speed, and safety. Accompanying it is the increase in pressure on passenger transportation in the aviation industry. The development of China's civil aviation industry is relatively late and relatively immature. It has only ushered in a development frenzy after the reform and opening up. Therefore, the method of predicting airport passenger throughput is also imperfect. The outdated forecasting method cannot predict the situation of the airport well, so it is very important to seek a more scientific, more complete and systematic forecasting method of airport passenger throughput. This article has conducted a certain review and research on the prediction methods of airport passenger throughput, and hopes to have further research in this aspect.

Abstract:The intelligent sensing and communication technology in the airports’ grid information system provides a multidimensional big data set for analyzing flight delays. These data from air traffic control, weather, and multiple determinants will cause initial flight delays. Due to the influence of adjacent flight time correlation, the initial delay causes the delay of subsequent flights, discovered by mining information sensing data, forming the phenomenon of flight delay diffusion. Different determinants will lead to the delay diffusion form of different regions, and more seriously, it will lead to “disaster area” delay in the whole regional grid information structure. To analyze the spatial impact of each factor on flight delay and explore the regional distribution of delay determinants, this paper combined the spatial regression model and determined the key explanatory variables by statistical and processing of the aviation system data. The case study showed the spatial airport delay characteristics in terms of aircraft movements in China. After processing intelligent sensing and communication data, the results show that there is a spatial effect between airports in terms of delay and determinants. The high-delay clusters of delay constraints principally occurred in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebe and Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations. Direct flights, weather, new flight routes, take-off, and landing capacity have a more critical impact on spatial airport delays. The use of Internet of Things technology to perceive, analyze, and integrate multiple information of airport delay and combine spatial analysis models can accurately mine delay characteristics and effectively achieve digital and intelligent flight delay management.

Effects of Infrastructure on Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC): the Case of Hangzhou International Airport, China

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the land use and land cover change (LUCC) of major infrastructure construction as exemplified by the case of Hangzhou International Airport (HIA, Hangzhou, China), which is one of the busiest airports in Eastern China. The airport’s effect on LUCC is evaluated by comparing the actual pattern from 1996 to 2001 with a counterfactual simulated land use pattern that would have occurred without the intervention of airport construction. This research is based on land use maps from Landsat images that were analyzed by supervised classification and visual interpretation. To simulate the land use pattern occurring without airport construction, the counterfactual, we applied a cellular automata (CA)–Markov model. Through before and after comparison, we found that cultivated land has decreased and that constructed land has increased because of airport construction. However, according to the counterfactual scenario, airport construction to some extent prevented a decrease in cultivated land and decelerated the expansion of constructed land at a small scale and in the short term. We discuss several reasons for this result, including governmental regulations, such as the setting of the airport clearance area for the safety of plane take-off and landing, the adverse effects of aviation noise or pollution, which may limit the construction activities in the surrounding areas of the airport, and, importantly, the unique land use and land management system in China, mainly the cultivated land requisition-compensation balance policy. We conclude that (1) the counterfactual CA–Markov model simulation is a suitable and unbiased way of evaluating the effect of infrastructure on LUCC that can solve the deficiency in the previous literature relying on before and after comparisons and (2) regulatory, economic, and institutional factors should be considered when explaining and assessing the LUCC due to large infrastructure projects, such as airports, in China and in other countries.

Abstract:Currently applied prediction methods of regional freight traffic and freight ton-kilometer forecasting were analyzed using typical Chinese regional goods transportation characteristics. The review of prediction methods showes that practical planning experts tend to apply the traditional methods which are easier to implement. The comparison also demonstrates that a combination of traditional methods is more effective than the simple models for practical planning. Research using the statistical data for the Yangtze Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Bohai Rim areas shows that ignoring differences between transport modes impacts the prediction accuracy. The four main transport modes suit different methods. The results show that the power model is better for railways, and the linear model is better for highways and waterways. Thus a combined model gives better results for all modes. The results for regional systems can be generalized to national transportation systems.

Abstract:Globalization has resulted in increases in air transportation demand and air passenger traffic. With the increases in air traffic, airports face challenges related to infrastructure, air services, and future development. Air traffic forecasting is essential to ensuring appropriate investment in airports. In this study, we combined fuzzy theory with support vector regression (SVR) to develop a fuzzy SVR (FSVR) model for forecasting international airport traffic. This model was used to predict the air traffic volumes at the world's 10 busiest airports in terms of air traffic in 2018. The predictions were made for the period from August 2014 to December 2019. For fuzzy time series, the developed FSVR model can consider historical air traffic changes. The FSVR model can suitably divide air traffic changes into appropriate fuzzy sets, generate membership function values, and establish fuzzy relations to produce fuzzy interpolated values with minimal errors. Thus, in the prediction of continuous data, the fuzzy data with the smallest errors can be subjected to SVR to find the optimal hyperplane model with the minimum distance to the appropriate support vector sample points. The performance of the proposed model was compared with those of five other models. Of the compared models, the FSVR model exhibited the lowest mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute error, and root mean square error for all types of traffic at all of the airports analyzed; all of the MAPE values were below 2.5. The FSVR model can predict future growth trends in air traffic, air passenger flows, aircraft flows, and logistics. An airport authority can use this model to analyze the existing operational facilities and service capacity, find bottlenecks in airport operations, and create a blueprint for future development. The findings revealed that implementing a hybrid modeling approach, specifically the FSVR model, can significantly enhance the performance of the SVR model. The FSVR model allows airlines to predict traffic growth patterns, identify viable new destinations, optimize their schedules or fleet, make accurate marketing decisions, and plan traffic effectively. The FSVR model can guide the timely construction of appropriate airport facilities with accurate predictions. Rapid, cost-effective, efficient, and balanced transportation planning enables the provision of fast, cost-effective, comfortable, safe, and convenient passenger and cargo services while ensuring the proper planning of the airport's capacity for land-side transportation connections.

Abstract:Based on the GARCH-MIDAS model, this paper explores the forecasting power of four transportation sub-sectors. The empirical results show that the freight volume and passenger traffic of air aviation outperform other models during MCS and DoC tests. This illustrates the important role of air aviation in the operation of a country's economy. The findings of this paper could help the government to formulate infrastructure planning and provide insights into the allocation of different resources to different transportation sectors.

Abstract:In order to forecast the scale of logistics demand for a new-built airport, economic indicators are used to forecast the scale of logistics demand and the measuring indicator of the scale of logistics demand is studied. The factor analysis and back propagation (BP) artificial neural network theory are applied to set up a model to forecast the scale of the logistics. The application of factor analysis is to reduce the number of indicators of the input layer in the BP artificial neural network, and to reduce complexity. Then a model is introduced to fit historical data of the scale of new-built airport logistics demand .Finally,a third-layer BP artificial neural network is constructed. This model is applied to predict the scale of the logistics demand in an example and the forecasting result shows that forecasting accuracy of the model is good. It also provides a new way of the logistics demand forecasting for a new-built airport. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Rail transport can be recognized as the main artery of the national economy. Therefore is very useful and important to forecast the rail cargo more accurately. In this paper, we first review the development of cargo forecasting methods, which have been studied for about 50 years. The character of each model will be analyzed and summarized. Then, on the basis of existing models of study, we adopt an improved stepwise regression model and Grey Model to forecast the rail cargo in Beijing. According to the analysis of related factors, we improve the stepwise regression model by adding average transport distance into the parameters. At last, we compare the two models, of which the basic ideas are completely different, and finally give their scopes of application. We hope it is a meaningful pursuit in the area of rail cargo estimation. © 2011 ASCE.

Abstract:This research focused on the relationships among 34 major airports in China, analyzing how these relationships are influenced by spatial dependence and heterogeneity. Using a spatial econometric model, it found that passenger traffic in China's airports displays a mutually driven aggregation effect. Furthermore, the study revealed that the airport relationship changes from complementarity to competition as the geographic distance between them decreases. The study also classified the main airports in China into three hierarchical levels and found significant complementarity and competition among those within the hub-and-spoke network structure. Specifically, this study identified a complementary relationship among regional trunk and local branch airports, as-well-as significant competition among hub airports. Crucially, the study suggests that the absence of a hub airport weakens the collaborative interactions between different types of airports, emphasizing the critical importance of hub airports for the connectivity and operational efficiency of China's airport network.

Abstract:Unreasonable traffic structure is proven to be a great contributor to environmental problems in Beijing. In order to make suggestions for traffic structure optimization, a two-step numerical research combining the regression analysis and the BP neural network has been made in this study. The first step is to establish the regression analysis model for the transport mode shares and, more importantly, to identify the relevant factors influencing the share rates of transport modes. The other step is to build a forecasting model based on a BP neural network, taking the identified relevant variables into account. The data of the involved variables are collected from Beijing Transport Annual Reports. We use the data from 2000 to 2011 to build the models, and use the data of 2012 to validate the models. The prediction results are shown to be accurately consistent with the real-gained data, and therefore the models are validated.

Abstract:<p>For better airport planning and air traffic management, local airport authority in a multi-airport region (MAR) often needs to consider the impacts of competition and collaboration with nearby airports on its own airport traffic. This paper proposed a dynamic spatial panel regression model to test the regional effects on airports in a MAR. The proposed model is applied to four closely situated airports in the Pearl River Delta region (PRD), China, to analyze their interactions, identify the determining factors, and evaluate the impact of these factors on airport capacity. PRD is one of the most prosperous areas in Asia, and competition among the four airports has intensified, due, in part, to the rapid growth of Guangzhou airport and Shenzhen airport. Together with the fact that Hong Kong airport reached 98% of its runway capacity in 2016, it is of great interest to understand the interactions among the airports in this region. The findings show that airport degree, flight frequency, airport capacity utilization, income, population, GDP, and fuel price are significant factors affecting airport's capacity. Furthermore, there is a spatially lagged effect in income and population, and a time-lagged effect in airport capacity, GDP, and fuel price.</p>
Study on the Location of China's Air Logistics Hub Airport Based on TOPSIS Model1

Abstract:With the economic globalization and integrated development, the air logistics industry has been upgraded, and the phenomenon of coupling and coordinated development of airports and regional economies have become more and more obvious. The business volume of the air logistics industry, which mainly focuses on air cargo, has surged and the development prospects are good. However, at present, a good freight development channel has not yet been established in China to support the rapid development of air logistics. The development of air logistics needs to implement the cargo priority strategy through the cargo hub airport, realize the priority of air cargo, and gather the air carrier flow to create an air logistics ecosystem. Based on China's air logistics development market, This study builds a location model for China's air cargo hub airport, and uses the TOPSIS model evaluation method to conclude that it is more suitable to establish a national air logistics hub airport in Wuhan City Circle, Hubei Province.

Analysis of Airport Risk Propagation in Chinese Air Transport Network

Abstract:In recent years, due to the close coupling between airports, airport risk propagation has become a huge challenge. However, it has not been fully understood on the network level. Airport risk can be transferred through other airports owing to connected resources. In this study, we consider two risk factors including airport delay and saturation and propose a risk coupling model based on a clustering algorithm to fit the index and form risk series. To understand the risk propagation mechanism, we build risk propagation networks based on the Granger Causality test, and we apply complex network theory to analyze the evolution of the risk propagation network. We study the regular pattern of risk propagation from perspectives of time and space. Through network analysis, we find four time stages in the risk propagation process and the participation of airports in risk propagation has a positive correlation with airport sizes. In addition, more large airports tend to prevent risk propagation in unoccupied and normal situations, while small airports perform better than large airports in busy situations. Via the conclusion, our work can assist airlines or air traffic managers in controlling the scale of risk propagation before its key time turning point. By identifying the critical airport level and related factors in risk propagation, they can also reduce single airport risk and risk participation through corresponding risk control measures, finally avoiding the large-scale spread of risk and reducing delay or cancellation of more flights.

Abstract:Before making travel plans, people often use the Internet to collect relevant information to help themselves make better decisions. Among the numerous information search channels, Internet search engine is used by the vast number of travelers because of its low cost and high efficiency. To a large extent, Internet search behavior is the external manifestation of users’ psychological activities, reflecting their concerns, needs and preferences. Therefore, Internet search data can reflect the air passenger demand information to a certain extent. In this manuscript, a novel decomposition ensemble model is proposed to discuss the role of Internet search data in air passenger demand forecasting. In the empirical study, the relevant data of Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport are taken as samples. The results show that the proposed forecasting model can integrate the advantages of decomposition-ensemble strategy and deep learning algorithm, and achieve more accurate and reliable prediction results than all benchmark models. This further indicates that adding Internet search data into the forecasting model can effectively improve the prediction performance of air passenger demand, and can provide scientific and reliable decision support for air transport management.

Abstract:The large airport terminal is the city's transportation hub and logistics center, and its building electricity consumption is twice or even higher than that of general large public buildings. Energy-saving and consumption reduction of the terminal building is not only the need to improve the operational efficiency and reduce the operation cost of the airport but also the need to realize the goal of "double carbon" in China. In this study, a large airport terminal in Beijing is taken as the research object. According to the characteristics of its main electrical equipment system, and the measured data of passenger flow from January 2020 to February 2023, combined with Pearson correlation analysis, K-means cluster analysis and multiple regression analysis, the influence and correlation characteristics of building scale, passenger flow and outdoor meteorological parameters on its electricity consumption are analyzed. The results show that: 1) The daily electricity consumption of the terminal can be analyzed by five levels according to the daily passenger flow, namely, 10,000 < N ≤ 30,000,30,000 < N ≤ 50,000, 50,000 < N ≤ 70,000, 70,000 < N ≤ 100,000, and 100,000 < N ≤ 130,000; 2) The electricity consumption of the terminal can be divided into three categories: basic electricity consumption related to the building scale of the terminal, variable electricity consumption I related to passenger flow, and variable electricity consumption II related to outdoor air temperature and passenger flow. Based on this, the terminal's daily electricity consumption prediction model is constructed, and the measured data verify the model's effectiveness. 3) Put forward the evaluation reference value of the daily electricity consumption of different passenger flow in this terminal, When the year passenger flow reaches the design value of 45 million, the normal daily electricity consumption level ranges from 0.44 to 0.48 kW·h/(m 2 ·day). The research results can provide methods and evaluation reference for electricity consumption prediction, and accurate control of electricity consumption of main equipment systems in airport terminal.
The Influence of the Air Cargo Network on the Regional Economy under the Impact of High-Speed Rail in China

Abstract:There is little research on the impact of air cargo networks on regional economic development, which is especially notable considering that Chinese airlines gradually adjusted their networks after the introduction of high-speed rail (HSR). This empirical study aims to fill this research gap. Firstly, we used the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to study the effect of the air cargo network on the regional economy. The results show that, in eastern and central China, the higher the clustering coefficient of the domestic air cargo network, the more significant their promotion effect becomes on the GDP per capita, with cities in eastern China benefitting the most from this effect. However, for super-scale cities, the clustering coefficient of the domestic air cargo network has a significant negative effect on the GDP per capita, which is likely because both the air and HSR passenger services crowd out the development opportunities for air cargo. Secondly, we applied the Difference-in-Difference (DID) method in order to measure the impact on the regional economy caused by air cargo under the impact of HSR. The results show that the aviation network adjusted for the impact of HSR produces heterogeneous effects on cities for different regions and scales, and that the international aviation network has greater impacts on cities than the domestic network. In eastern China, HSR and air cargo (both international and domestic networks) promote economic growth simultaneously; in central China, only domestic air cargo has a positive effect on the regional economy; in western China, neither HSR nor air cargo has an obvious effect on the regional economy. Policy implications—such as encouraging the cooperation of HSR and civil aviation—are discussed, and could help bring the functions of the air cargo network in regional economic development into full play.

Research on Port Throughput Prediction of Tianjin Port Based on PCA-SVR in the New Era

Abstract:By selecting nine indicators related to Tianjin Port throughput in the new era, a PCA-SVR prediction model is constructed and the throughput of Tianjin port in 2017–2018 years is predicted. Based on the predicted results, the growth rate and influencing factors of Tianjin port throughput are analyzed. The research shows that the growth rate of Tianjin Port throughput has a downward trend in the next two years. In numerous influencing factors, the three indicators of the total value of imports and exports of foreign trade commodities, the added value of tertiary industry and Hebei port throughput accounts for the percentage of total throughput of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei port have a significant impact on Tianjin Port throughput.
Application of a Gray Econometric Model in Traffic Volume Prediction

Abstract:Traffic volume is affected by social,economical and environmental factors.However,the mechanism is too complex to be well investigated.Furthermore,the lack of on-site traffic survey brought difficulty in traffic volume prediction.Considering the advantages of grey theory on correlated factors analysis,and the benefits of linear regression model on the development law investigation,a gray econometric model,which combine the grey theory with linear regression,has been proposed to predict the traffic volume in this paper.Such method has been applied in agriculture area for the grain yield prediction.The gray econometric model is established based on statistic data related to development of society,economy and annual average daily traffic volume of the national highway network of Hebei Province.Comparing with other traffic volume prediction models,this model affords higher prediction accuracy and better rationality.As the prediction value of 2007 according to this model agrees very well with the measured value of the highway net work,the applicability and reliability of this model is verified.
