Abstract:Permanental polynomials are computed for all fullerenes C-<= 50(that includes 812 isomers). Properties of their coefficients and zeroes are investigated statistically using the data obtained. New properties are found, and exceptions are also discovered comparing with the results by Cash through the data of C-<= 36 (that includes 35 isomers). More linear patterns of zero clusters can be identified as some smaller fullerenes are ignored.

Abstract:The permanental polynomial of buckminsterfullerene C-60 is computed in parallel in this paper. The basic idea of the method is simply divide-and-conquer to achieve both computational precision and speed. The load balancing strategies for the permanental polynomial computation are further improved with the help of the theory of parallel machine scheduling in combinatorial optimization. The special structural properties of the matrices are considered intensively so that very high parallel efficiency is, acquired. The algorithm developed in this paper can handle the permanental polynomial of C-60 and even larger fullerenes, which are of interest in applications.

Abstract:An efficient numerical method for computing permanental polynomials of graphs is proposed. It adapts multi-entry expansion of FFT, and is parallel in nature. It is applied to fullerene-type graphs, and works for C56, while the largest fullerene computed before is C40. Extensive numerical computations show that the algorithm is fast and stable.

Abstract:The permanental polynomial of IPR fullerene C-70(D-5h) is computed with quadruple precision arithmetic based on sparse graph on PC in acceptable time. The computing adopts 128 bits to store one float and works well for C-70, while the largest fullerene computed before is C-60, which can be easily obtained now. Some properties of the coefficients and zeroes of the permanental polynomials of IPR fullerenes C-60 and C-70 are also investigated. Computational results show the quadruple precision method can handle permanental polynomial of C-70 and even larger fullerenes, which are of interest in applications.

Abstract:The permanent of the adjacency matrix of a fullerene C-n is related to structural parameters involving the presence of contiguous pentagons p, q and r, so that the permanent of the adjacency matrix can be predicted through those structural parameters. This is more meaningful for n large, since the computation of permanent is proved to be a #P-complete problem in counting. However structural parameters p,q and r become all zero for isolated-pentagon isomers when n is large (say n >= 60). New structural parameters v, v and w; are introduced in this paper, which count two or three contiguous hexagons. The stepwise regression model is used to predict the permanents of adjacency matrices of fullerenes. Computational results show that our new models are simple, reliable and efficient.

Abstract:By using combinatorics, we give a new proof for the recurrence relations of the characteristic polynomial coefficients, and then we obtain an explicit expression for the generic term of the coefficient sequence, which yields the trace formulae of the Cayley-Hamilton's theorem with all coefficients explicitly given, and which implies a byproduct, a complete expression for the determinant of any finite-dimensional matrix in terms of the traces of its successive powers. And we discuss some of their applications to chiral perturbation theory and general relativity.

Abstract:A partially structure-preserving method for sparse symmetric matrices is proposed. Computational results on the permanents of adjacency matrices arising from molecular chemistry are presented. The largest adjacency matrix of fullerenes computed before is that of C60 with a cost of several hours on supercomputers, while only about 6 min on an Intel Pentium PC (1.8 GHz) with our method. Further numerical computations are given for larger fullerenes and other adjacency matrices with n=60,80. This shows that our method is promising for problems from molecular chemistry.

Abstract:Fullerenes, as characteristic carbon nanomaterials, offer significant potential for diverse applications due to their structural diversity and tunable properties. Numerous isomers can exist for a specific fullerene size, yet a comprehensive understanding of their fundamental properties remains elusive. In this study, we construct an up-to-date computational database for C20-C60 fullerenes, consisting of 5770 structures, and calculate 12 fundamental properties using DFT, including stability (binding energy), electronic properties (HOMO-LUMO gap), and solubility (partition coefficient logP). Our findings reveal that the HOMO-LUMO gap weakly correlates with both binding energy and logP, indicating that electronic properties can be tailored for specific uses without affecting stability or solubility. In addition, we introduce a set of novel topological features and geometric measures to investigate structure-property relationships. For the first time, we apply atom, bond, and hexagon features to effectively predict the stability of C20-C60 fullerenes, surpassing the conventional qualitative isolated pentagon rule, and demonstrating their robust transferability to larger-size fullerenes beyond C60. Our work offers guidance for optimizing fullerenes as electron acceptors in organic solar cells and lays a foundational understanding of their functionalization and applications in energy conversion and nanomaterial sciences.

Abstract:The interlayer interactions in nonpolar graphite and other BeCeN layered materials involving polar covalent bonds (h-BN, g-C3N4, graphite-like BC3 and BC2N) have been investigated by dispersion-corrected density functional calculations. Lattice parameters, bulk moduli and interlayer binding energies of these layered materials have been calculated using different dispersion correction schemes for comparison. Charge density difference plots have also been presented to elucidate the charge transfer behaviors along the nonpolar/polar covalent bonds as well as in the interlayer region. At first, graphite and h-BN were examined as benchmarks; the former contains planar graphene layers regardless of the interlayer binding, while the monolayers in the latter exhibit an asymmetric charge distribution along the BeN polar bonds, leading to a slightly puckered feature induced by the interlayer interaction. Similar geometric deviations have also been observed in other layered structures involving CeN and/or BeC polar bonds, but with distinct characteristics directly related to their specific interlayer stacking situations. By contrast, all of the isolated monolayers free from interlayer binding show a pristine planar feature in despite of the polar covalent bonds involved. Our theoretical findings further address the necessity of considering the electron-density variations induced by specific bonding environments in polar BeCeN layered materials, which can be properly described by the Tkatchenko-Scheffler correction.

Abstract:In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that per[(sic)2j-k/n(sic)](1 <= j,k <= n) = 2(2(n+1)-1)Bn+1, where B-0, B-1, B-2, . . . are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that per[sgn(cos pi i+j/n+1)](1 <= i,j <= n) = {-Sigma(m)(k=0)((m)(k))E2k+1 if n = 2m+1, Sigma(m)(k=0)((m)(k))E-2k if n = 2m, where sgn(x) is the sign function, and E-0, E-1, E-2, . . . are the Euler (zigzag) numbers. In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic - the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. In this note, we present a relationship between Fowler-Manolopoulos predictor and another hexagonal parameter, which could give Fowler-Manolopoulos predictor a graphical explanation. Abstract:The quantitative relationship between the surface chemistry of carbon materials and the compatibility with polymers is a fundamental and vital physical chemistry problem in the field of polymer nanocomposites. Traditional experimental methods are difficult to solve this problem, so no theory has been formed to guide the functionalization of carbon materials. In this work, the quantitative relationship between functional groups and Hildebrand (delta(T)) and transformed Hansen (delta(vdW) and delta(ele)) solubility parameters of fullerene (C60) was determined by molecular dynamics simulation. Besides, which solubility parameter can more accurately predict the compatibility between C60 and three typical polymers with different polarity as a function of grafting ratio is investigated. Very interestingly, no matter which group is grafted, delta(T) and delta(vdW) of C60 show a slight increase first and then a decrease with the grafting ratio, whereas delta(ele) first increases abruptly and then decreases slightly. The introduction of polar groups (-OH, -COOH, and -NH2) is conducive to improving the compatibility between C60 and polymers, whereas the introduction of the nonpolar group (-CH3) is not. In terms of predicting compatibility, the Hildebrand solubility parameter is better than the Hansen solubility parameter due to the nonpolar nature of the polymers, even for nitrile butadiene rubber. Finally, the optimum grafting ratios corresponding to the maximum binding energies of C60/polymers mixtures were obtained. This study provides a new understanding of the functionalization of C60 at the molecular level and promotes the development of the theory of the thermodynamics of mixing.

Abstract: In this paper, we will develop more character varieties for a finite group $G$ by generalizing original character theory of Frobenius to good partition algebras. In the view of this generalization theory, we will reformulate the refined McKay conjecture and part of Navarro' conjecture on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture in the form of equality of polynomials. We will define the Frobenius polynomial, degree polynomial and prove that the ordinary character table of $G$ is equivalent to the Frobenius polynomial of the center of $FG$. We find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. As an application of this new invariants, we prove that the normal series of a finite pure perfect group is determined by the lengths of its conjugate classes.

Abstract:The universal variation pattern of the total energy of various fullerenes including single-walled carbon nanotubes with respect to their extra charge is revealed by the density-functional-theory calculations. The parabolic energy-charge curve with its lowest energy value corresponding to a negatively charged fullerene indicates that these carbon materials have positive electron affinity and are not in the most stable state. The positive electron affinity seems to originate from the pi-electrons and is found to be related to the aggregation property of fullerenes.

Abstract:Graph polynomials is one of the important research directions in mathematical chemistry. The coefficients of some graph polynomials, such as matching polynomial and permanental polynomial, are related to structural properties of graphs. The Hosoya index of a graph is the sum of the absolute value of all coefficients for the matching polynomial. And the permanental sum of a graph is the sum of the absolute value of all coefficients of the permanental polynomial. In this paper, we characterize the second to sixth minimal Hosoya indices of all bicyclic graphs. Furthermore, using the results, the second to sixth minimal permanental sums of all bicyclic graphs are also characterized.

Abstract:In this paper we study the resonance graphs of benzenoid systems, tubulenes, and fullerenes. The resonance graph reflects the interactions between the Kekul e structures of a molecule. The equivalence of the Zhang-Zhang polynomial (which counts Clar covers) of the molecular graph and the cube polynomial (which counts hypercubes) of its resonance graph is known for all three families of molecular graphs. Instead of considering only interactions between 6-cycles (Clar covers), we also consider 10-cycles, which contribute to the resonance energy of a molecule as well. Therefore, we generalize the concepts of the Zhang-Zhang polynomial and the cube polynomial and prove the equality of these two polynomials.

Abstract:This work explores the complicated realm of fullerene structures by utilizing an innovative algebraic lens to unravel their chemical intricacies. We reveal a more profound comprehension of the structural subtleties of fullerenes by the computation of modified polynomials that are customized to their distinct geometric and electrical characteristics. In addition to enhancing the theoretical underpinnings, the interaction between algebraic characteristics and fullerene structures creates opportunities for real‐world applications in materials science and nanotechnology. Our results provide a novel viewpoint that bridges the gap between algebraic abstraction and chemical reality. They also open up new avenues for the manipulation and construction of materials based on fullerenes with customized features. Topological or numerical descriptors are used to associate important physicomolecular restrictions with important molecular structural features such as periodicity, melting and boiling points, and heat content for various 2 and 3D molecular preparation graphs or networking. The degree of an atom in a molecular network or molecular structure is utilized in this study to calculate the degree of atom‐based numerics. The modified polynomial technique is a more recent way of assessing molecular systems and geometries in chemoinformatics. It emphasizes the polynomial nature of molecular features and gives numerics in algebraic expression. Particularly in this context, we describe multiple cages topologically based on the fullerene molecular form as polynomials, and several algebraic properties, including the Randić number and the modified polynomials of the first and second Zagreb numbers, are measured. By applying algebraic methods, we computed topological descriptors such as the Randić number and Zagreb indices. Our qualitative analysis shows that these descriptors significantly improve the prediction of molecular behavior. For instance, the Randić index provided insights into the stability and reactivity of fullerene structures, while the Zagreb indices helped us understand their potential in electronic applications. Our results suggest that modified polynomials not only offer a refined perspective on fullerene structures but also enable the design of materials with tailored properties. This study highlights the potential for these algebraic tools to bridge the gap between theoretical models and practical applications in nanotechnology and materials science, paving the way for innovations in drug delivery, electronic devices, and catalysis.
