Abstract:The cross-coupling reaction of unsaturated carbons is one of the most important methods in organic synthesis. It has been widely used in the manufactures of dyes, pharmaceuticals, polymers, and many other fine chemicals. Due to their low price and toxicity, Cu salts have recently emerged as novel catalysts in cross-coupling reactions of unsaturated carbons, whose replacement of toxic and expensive Pd or Ni catalysts will greatly improve the chemical industry in both the economic and environmental aspects. In this review the newest development of the Cu catalysts in cross-coupling reactions was summarized. C-C, C-N, C-O, C-S, as well as C-X coupling reactions were reviewed. The article also provided detail information about the effects of Cu salts, ligands and solvents on the efficiency of the cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract:We have successfully developed an example of copper-catalyzed decarboxylative C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) coupling reactions via C-H functionalization for the first time. It is noteworthy that our catalytic system is very stable, low-cost, palladium-free, ligand-free, and easily accessible.

Abstract:Cooperative bimetallic catalysis is a fundamental approach in modern synthetic chemistry. We report bimetallic cooperative catalysis for the direct decarbonylative heteroarylation of ubiquitous carboxylic acids via acyl C-O/C-H coupling. This novel catalytic system exploits the cooperative action of a copper catalyst and a palladium catalyst in decarbonylation, which enables highly chemoselective synthesis of important heterobiaryl motifs through the coupling of carboxylic acids with heteroarenes in the absence of prefunctionalization or directing groups. This cooperative decarbonylative method uses common carboxylic acids and shows a remarkably broad substrate scope (>70 examples), including late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and streamlined synthesis of bioactive agents. Extensive mechanistic and computational studies were conducted to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction. The key step involves intersection of the two catalytic cycles via transmetallation of the copper-aryl species with the palladium(II) intermediate generated by oxidative addition/decarbonylation.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed selective coupling of C(sp3)-H bonds with C(sp2)-H bonds has been developed. An aniline module was used as a directing group to generate an aminyl radical, which selectively cleaves the secondary and tertiary C(sp3)-H bonds via a 1,5-HAT process to forge six-membered carbocyclic rings.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed borylative multicomponent reactions (MCRs) involving olefins and C-N electrophiles are a powerful tool to rapidly build up molecular complexity. The products from these reactions contain multiple functionalities, such as amino, cyano and boronate groups, that are ubiquitous in medicinal and process chemistry programs. Copper-catalyzed MCRs are particularly attractive because they use a relatively abundant and non-toxic catalyst to selectively deliver high-value products from simple feedstocks such as olefins. In this Minireview, we explore this rapidly emerging field and survey the borylative union of allenes, dienes, styrenes and other olefins, with imines, nitriles and related C-N electrophiles.

Abstract:Sonogashira coupling involves coupling of vinyl/aryl halides with terminal acetylenes catalyzed by transition metals, especially palladium and copper. This is a well known reaction in organic synthesis and plays a role in sp2-sp C-C bond formations. This cross coupling was used in synthesis of natural products, biologically active molecules, heterocycles, dendrimers, conjugated polymers and organic complexes. This review paper focuses on developments in the palladium and copper catalyzed Sonogashira cross coupling achieved in recent years concerning substrates, different catalyst systems and reaction conditions.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed reaction of diazo compounds generates copper carbene intermediates that undergo diverse transformations. In recent years, the selectivity and efficiency of these important conversions have been further improved. In particular, breakthroughs have been made in catalytic asymmetric polar X-H bond insertion reactions. Moreover, novel transformations based on copper carbene, namely copper-catalyzed cross-couplings of diazo compounds, have emerged as powerful methods for carbon-carbon bond formations. This feature article summarizes the most recent developments in this area.

Abstract:We report a redox-neutral P(O)-N coupling reaction of P(O)-H compounds with azides via photoredox and copper catalysis, providing new access to useful phosphinamides, phosphonamides, and phosphoramides. This transformation tolerates a wide range of nucleophilic functionalities including alcohol and amine nucleophiles, which makes up for the deficiency of classical nitrogen nucleophilic substitution reactions. As a demonstration of the broad potential applications of this new methodology, late-stage functionalization of a diverse array of azido-bearing natural products and drug molecules, a preliminary asymmetric reaction, and a continuous visible-light photoflow process have been developed.

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed the great progress of copper-catalyzed C — H functionalization reactions, which have shown great potential in synthesizing multi-functionalized organic compounds. In the present review, the recent devel-opment of Cu(I)/Cu(II) catalyzed sp, sp 2 and sp 3 C — H bond functionalizations since 2008 is systematically summarized. Be-sides of the reaction conditions and substrate scopes for different C — H functionalizations, the reported mechanistic studies were also summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Research on coupling reactions is an important challenge in chemistry science due to their numerous applications in industrial, chemical, biological and pharmaceutical processes. Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions to form carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds has emerged as an extremely general technology for the preparation of compounds containing C–C and C–X bonds in numerous areas of basic and applied research. In recent times, the activation of strong C–O bonds in cross-coupling catalysis can open up new oxygenate-based feed stocks and building blocks for complex-molecule synthesis. Abstract:Carbonylation reactions have been widely used to construct carbonyl-containing molecules or carbon enhancement reactions, which are mostly catalyzed by noble metals (Pd, Rh, Ru, Ir). In this review, we introduce the copper-catalyzed carbonylation reactions that have been developed in our group. Abstract:Aryl nitriles can be efficiently synthesized through transition-metal-mediated cyanation of aryl halides, arenes, aryl boronic acids, and so on. Among those most commonly used transition-metals, copper catalysts are surely much more inexpensive and easier to handle, compared to any other metal catalysts. Considering the high-efficiency of copper catalysts in the activation of C–X, C–H, and C–B bond as well as in the formation of C–CN bond, this Letter summarizes various copper-mediated cyanations based on the different kinds of cyanide reagents, such as metal cyanides, potassium hexacyanoferrate(II), acetone cyanohydrins, DDQ, AIBN, benzyl cyanide, malononitrile, nitromethane, and DMF. Our group’s recent contributions to this area are also demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract Copper-mediated carbon–heteroatom bond-forming reactions involving a wide range of substrates have been in the spotlight for many organic chemists. This review highlights developments between 2010 and 2019 in both stoichiometric and catalytic copper-mediated reactions, and also examples of nickel-mediated reactions, under modified Chan–Lam cross-coupling conditions using various nucleophiles; examples include chemo- and regioselective N-arylations or O-arylations. The utilization of various nucleophiles as coupling partners together with reaction optimization (including the choice of copper source, ligands, base, and other additives), limitations, scope, and mechanisms are examined; these have benefitted the development of efficient and milder methods. The synthesis of medicinally valuable or pharmaceutically important nitrogen heterocycles, including isotope-labeled compounds, is also included. Abstract:Decarboxylative C(sp2)-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions hold extraordinary potential for the sustainable preparation of biologically active scaffolds. Herein, we report a copper sulfate/1,10-phenathroline catalytic system for the decarboxylative intramolecular C(sp2)-O, C(sp2)-S, and C(sp2)-N coupling reactions leading to the construction of a series of benzo[b]furans, benzo[b]thiophenes, and indole derivatives from the corresponding coumarins, thiocoumarins, or quinolones, respectively. Our mechanistic study based on benzo[b]furan formation suggests a three-step process of the transformations, which consists of (i) base-mediated hydrolytic ring opening of coumarin, (ii) copper-oxygen co-initiated radical decarboxylation, and (iii) copper-catalyzed C-heteroatom cross coupling. Application of this method in the total synthesis of egonol, a bioactive natural product, was demonstrated successfully, with an overall yield of 51.7%.

Abstract:Over the decades, photochemistry has received great attention and become a powerful tool in organic synthesis. The heterogeneous photocatalysts present complementary advantages in production separation, catalyst recycling, and stability compared to the traditional homogeneous photocatalyst. In this review, we choose the C-N bond formation as a typical coupling reaction and summarize the development of the heterogeneous catalytic system and its advantage. The titanium dioxide, semiconductor quantum dots, covalent organic frameworks, and carbon nitrides would be discussed in detail as important heterogeneous photocatalysts. The combination and electron transfer pathway between heterogeneous catalysts and transition-metal catalysts are the focus of this review. These advances do not only limit the C-N coupling but also extend to the other coupling reactions.

Abstract:As inexpensive and relatively nontoxic metals, Fe and Co are ideal elements for the development of catalysts. Because they have multiple redox states, Fe and Co are also anticipated to have very rich catalytic chemistry. Nonetheless, very little attention has been paid to the catalysis of Fe and Co. The present review surveys reaction conditions, yields and selectivity of the C-C coupling reactions. Possible mechanisms of these intriguing reactions are discussed. Applications of these new reactions to complex molecule synthesis are also described.
