Abstract:Exciting solid materials with femtosecond lasers enables the study of many-body interactions in quantum materials during non-equilibrium processes for the time scales of different degrees of freedom in materials may vary, and such nonthermal methods can lead to the realization of new or hidden states. As one of the frontier research areas in condensed matter physics, ultrafast electronic dynamics in quantum materials after photoexcitation can be studied using time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as the key experimental tool. In this review, we focus on the use of nonlinear optical crystals and high-harmonic generation for time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We cover recent advances in the field, including (1) the probing of unoccupied electronic states in quantum materials, (2) the observation of light-induced ultrafast electronic phase transitions, (3) the measurement of microscopic electron-phonon coupling strength, and (4) the discovery of light-induced new states.

Abstract:Whether photoemission probes surface or bulk properties has long been a topic of interest and debate. This work employs angle-resolved photoemission to map the electronic structure of Ag films of varying thicknesses prepared on Si(111). As expected, the discrete quantum-well states or subbands observed at small thicknesses merge into a continuum as the film thickness approaches the bulk limit. However, a number of discrete states remain isolated within gaps or pockets in the bulk continuum. While these Ag surface states have been predicted previously by calculations, most are experimentally identified herein only for the first time. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

Abstract:The issue of surface sensitivity and its relationship with the interpretation of spectral features observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments is investigated. Rather than attempt to make an explicit connection to bulk electronic structure calculations, we take the approach of exploring this issue within the natural context of a vacuum-terminated crystalline slab. Doing so, we reconcile the empirical reality of reliable kz fidelity with acute surface sensitivity of this technique. High-accuracy bulk electronic bandmapping with eliminated diffraction effects using hard X-ray photoelectron momentum microscopy

Abstract:Abstract A key benefit of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) in the X-ray range is the significant increase of the information depth, thanks to the large inelastic mean-free-path of the escaping photoelectrons. In practice hard X-ray ARPES (HARPES) faces severe challenges by low cross sections, large photon momentum transfer, and in particular strong phonon scattering and photoelectron diffraction effects. Here, we show that these challenges can be overcome by extending ultra-efficient time-of-flight momentum microscopy into the hard X-ray regime. Phonon scattering destroys the initial momentum distribution but subsequent diffraction at the lattice imprints a pronounced Kikuchi-type pattern on the background signal. Moreover, the pattern of the valence electrons is modulated by diffraction as well. For the examples of the medium-weight element materials Mo and layered TiTe 2 , we demonstrate how comprehensive valence-band and core-level photoemission data taken under identical conditions can be used to effectively remove photoelectron diffraction effects in HARPES band maps.

Element-specific electronic and structural dynamics using transient X-ray spectroscopy

Abstract:Transient X-ray absorption techniques can measure ultrafast dynamics of the elemental edges in a material or multiple layer junction, giving them immense potential for deconvoluting concurrent processes. However, the interpretation of the photoexcited changes to an X-ray edge is not as simple as directly probing a transition with optical or infrared wavelengths. The core hole left by the core-level transition distorts the measured absorption and reflection spectra, both hiding and revealing different aspects of a photo-induced process. In this perspective, we describe the implementation and interpretation of transient X-ray experiments. This description includes a guide of how to choose the best wavelength and corresponding X-ray sources when designing an experiment. As an example, we focus on the rising use of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy for understanding performance limiting behaviors in solar energy materials, such as measurements of polaron formation, electron and hole kinetics, and charge transport in each layer of a metal-oxide-semiconductor junction. The ability of measuring photoexcited carriers in each layer of a multilayer junction could prove particularly impactful in the study of molecules, materials, and their combinations that lead to functional devices in photochemistry and photoelectrochemistry.

Abstract:While recent experiments provided compelling evidence for an intricate dependence of attosecond photoemission-time delays on the solid's electronic band structure, the extent to which electronic transport and dispersion in solids can be imaged in time-resolved photoelectron (PE) spectra remains poorly understood. Emphasizing the distinction between photoemission time delays measured with two-photon, two-color interferometric spectroscopy, and transport times, we demonstrate how the effect of energy dispersion in the solid on photoemission delays can, in principle, be observed in interferometric photoemission. We reveal analytically a scaling relation between the PE transport time in the solid and the observable photoemission delay and confirm this relation in numerical simulations for a model system. We trace photoemission delays to the phase difference the PE accumulates inside the solid and, in particular, predict negative photoemission delays. Based on these findings, we suggest a novel time-domain interferometric solid-state energy-momentum-dispersion imaging method.

Abstract:Abstract Exploring the realms of physics that extend beyond thermal equilibrium has emerged as a crucial branch of condensed matter physics research. It aims to unravel the intricate processes involving the excitations, interactions, and annihilations of quasi- and many-body particles, and ultimately to achieve the manipulation and engineering of exotic non-equilibrium quantum phases on the ultrasmall and ultrafast spatiotemporal scales. Given the inherent complexities arising from many-body dynamics, it therefore seeks for a technique that has efficient and diverse detection degrees of freedoms to study the underlying physics. By combining high-power femtosecond lasers with real- or momentum-space photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), imaging excited state phenomena from multiple perspectives, including time, real space, energy, momentum, and spin, can be conveniently achieved, making it a unique technique in studying physics out of equilibrium. In this context, we overview the working principle and technical advances of the PEEM apparatus and the related laser systems, and survey key excited-state phenomena probed through this surface-sensitive methodology, including the ultrafast dynamics of electrons, excitons, plasmons, and spins etc., in materials ranging from bulk and nano-structured metals and semiconductors to low dimensional quantum materials. Through this review, one can further envision that time-resolved PEEM will open new avenues for investigating a variety of classical and quantum phenomena in a multidimensional parameter space, offering unprecedented and comprehensive insights to important questions in the field of condensed matter physics.

New Developments in Laser-Based Photoemission Spectroscopy and its Scientific Applications: a Key Issues Review

Abstract:The significant progress in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in last three decades has elevated it from a traditional band mapping tool to a precise probe of many-body interactions and dynamics of quasiparticles in complex quantum systems. The recent developments of deep ultraviolet (DUV, including ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet) laser-based ARPES have further pushed this technique to a new level. In this paper, we review some latest developments in DUV laser-based photoemission systems, including the super-high energy and momentum resolution ARPES, the spin-resolved ARPES, the time-of-flight ARPES, and the time-resolved ARPES. We also highlight some scientific applications in the study of electronic structure in unconventional superconductors and topological materials using these state-of-the-art DUV laser-based ARPES. Finally we provide our perspectives on the future directions in the development of laser-based photoemission systems.

Abstract:In this overview, I will briefly explore some of the basic concepts and observable effects in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, including references to some key first publications, as well as other papers in this issue that explore many of them in more detail. I will then turn to some examples of several present and promising future applications of this diverse technique. Some of the future areas explored will be the use chemical shifts, multiplet splittings, and hard X-ray excitation in the study of strongly correlated materials; photoelectron diffraction and holography for atomic structure determinations; standing wave and hard X-ray excited photoemission for probing buried interfaces and more bulk-like properties of complex materials; valence-band mapping with soft and hard X-ray excitation; and time-resolved measurements with the sample at high ambient pressures in the multi-torr regime.

Abstract:We present an experimental setup for laser-based angle-resolved time-of-flight photoemission. Using a picosecond pulsed laser, photons of energy 10.5 eV are generated through higher harmonic generation in xenon. The high repetition rate of the light source, variable between 0.2 and 8 MHz, enables high photoelectron count rates and short acquisition times. By using a time-of-flight analyzer with angle-resolving capabilities, electrons emitted from the sample within a circular cone of up to ±15° can be collected. Hence, simultaneous acquisition of photoemission data for a complete area of the Brillouin zone is possible. The current photon energy enables bulk sensitive measurements, high angular resolution, and the resulting covered momentum space is large enough to enclose the entire Brillouin zone in cuprate high-T(c) superconductors. Fermi edge measurements on polycrystalline Au shows an energy resolution better than 5 meV. Data from a test measurement of the Au(111) surface state are presented along with measurements of the Fermi surface of the high-T(c) superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8 + δ) (Bi2212).

Abstract:Angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been a widely adopted technique to investigate surface and shallow interface phenomena. An overwhelming majority of its use focuses on extracting the energy‐momentum dispersion (band structure) in momentum space. A new way of using ARPES is proposed to investigate wave function properties in crystalline solids and surfaces. Angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been a widely adopted technique in the studies of quantum materials. The surface sensitivity of photoelectric effect also makes it a powerful tool to investigate surface and shallow interface phenomena. While an overwhelming majority of its use focuses on extracting the eigenenergy of the electron Bloch states in momentum space, attempts to extract information of the wave function via ARPES has been limited to molecular systems. In this perspective, it is proposed and advocated use ARPES to investigate and unravel wave function properties, as opposed to only the electron energy‐momentum dispersion relation, in crystalline solids and their interfaces. This can help enhance the rapidly growing development of material properties based on the spatial and geometric properties of the electronic wave functions.

Abstract:Photon-based spectroscopies have had a significant impact on both fundamental science and applications by providing an efficient approach to investigate the microscopic physics of materials. Together with the development of synchrotron X-ray techniques, theoretical understanding of the spectroscopies themselves and the underlying physics that they reveal has progressed through advances in numerical methods and scientific computing. In this review, we provide an overview of theories for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering applied to quantum materials. First, we discuss methods for studying equilibrium spectroscopies, including first-principles approaches, numerical many-body methods and a few analytical advances. Second, we assess the recent development of ultrafast techniques for out-of-equilibrium spectroscopies, from characterizing equilibrium properties to generating transient or metastable states, mainly from a theoretical point of view. Finally, we identify the main challenges and provide an outlook for the future direction of the field.

Abstract:X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful experimental technique that yields invaluable information on a range of phenomena that occur in solids, liquids, and gasses. The binding energy and shape of a photoemission peak is sensitive not only to the atomic number, valence and orbital from which the electron is ejected, but also to complex many-body effects that accompany photoemission. Provided the influences of these different drivers of spectral line shapes can be disentangled, a great deal can be learned about the electronic structure of materials of interest. In addition to these largely local effects, the long-range electrostatic environment and resulting electric potential at the emitting atom also have a direct effect on the measured binding energies. This fact opens the door to extracting information about the dependence of the valence and conduction band minima on depth below the surface, which in turn allows both vertical and lateral electrical transport data to be better understood. One purpose of this Report is to summarize how the different physical forces described above impact the spectral properties of complex oxide epitaxial films. This class of materials typically incorporates transition metal cations in different valences and such ions exhibit the most complex core-level spectra of any on the periodic chart. A second purpose is to show how a comprehensive understanding of local physical effects in x-ray photoemission allows one to model spectra and extract from core-level line shapes and binding energies detailed information on built-in potentials and band edge discontinuities in heterostructures involving complex oxides.

Super‐Resolved Bulk States of Photonic Crystals With Cathodoluminescence Microscopy

Abstract:The spontaneous emission of an optical emitter is strongly affected by its surrounding radiative local density of optical states (r‐LDOS). Bulk states of a z‐direction asymmetric dielectric photonic crystal slab are probed with cathodoluminescence microscopy by characterizing r‐LDOS with super nanoscale resolution, benefiting the nanoscale manipulation of light–matter interactions and the optimization of quantum emission devices. Progress in photonic crystals (PhCs) enables the advanced manipulation of light propagation, leading to strong light–matter interactions and unconventional applications. To explore the physical nature and realize the precise and efficient control of position‐dependent light–matter interactions, the direct deep‐subwavelength characterization of PhC states is pivotal. Here, the super‐resolved visualization of bulk states in the z‐direction asymmetric dielectric PhC is realized by characterizing the radiative local density of optical states, including the etched hole area. An accelerating voltage scanning approach is proposed to selectively probe bulk states and substrates, elucidating the electron–matter interactions affected by the electron‐beam energy. The bulk state energy is demonstrated to be confined inside structure holes as shown by the cathodoluminescence intensity mappings of PhCs with different geometrical parameters, enabling the design of a silicon‐based high‐quality cavity in the visible range. This work provides a deep investigation of the depth‐dependent interaction between the electron beam and dielectric PhCs, promoting the characterization of PhC delocalized modes. The deep‐subwavelength detail of bulk state benefits the future nanoscale manipulation of light–matter interactions and the optimization of quantum emission devices.

Abstract:Development of a laboratory hard X-ray photoelectron spectrometer using excitations by monochromatic Cr Kα X-rays of 5.4keV and a high energy analyzer with a wide acceptance angle resolved objective lens is introduced. Wide applicability of the system as a powerful tool for the investigations of electronic and chemical states of materials are demonstrated by various examples including bulk sensitive valence band and core level spectroscopy, overlayer thickness determination by photoelectron take off angle dependence measurements, buried layer analysis, bulk sensitive photoelectron diffraction to determine surface polarity of compound single and poly crystalline films, interface state spectroscopy in MOS structures by applying voltage bias, and environmental cell for high pressure photoelectron spectroscopy. These results evidently show the laboratory HXPES system is going to be indispensable in wide varieties of targets. It also opens up opportunities of the analysis of materials which are not accessible to beamlines due to limitations by safety control regulation and avoidance of risks to the beamlines.

Hybrid Photoelectron Momentum Microscope at the Soft X-ray Beamline I09 of the Diamond Light Source

Abstract:Soft X-ray momentum microscopy of crystalline solids is a highly efficient approach to map the photoelectron distribution in four-dimensional (E,k) parameter space over the entire Brillouin zone. The fixed sample geometry eliminates any modulation of the matrix element otherwise caused by changing the angle of incidence. We present a new endstation at the soft X-ray branch of beamline I09 at the Diamond Light Source, UK. The key component is a large single hemispherical spectrometer combined with a time-of-flight analyzer behind the exit slit. The photon energy ranges from hv = 105 eV to 2 keV, with circular polarization available for hv > 150 eV, allowing for circular dichroism measurements in angle-resolved photoemission (CD-ARPES). A focused and monochromatized He lamp is used for offline measurements. Under k-imaging conditions, energy and momentum resolution are 10.2 meV (FWHM) and 0.010 angstroms^-1 (base resolution 4.2 meV with smallest slits and a pass energy of 8 eV). The large angular filling of the entrance lens and hemisphere (225 mm path radius) allows k-field-of-view diameters > 6 angstroms^-1. Energy filtered X-PEEM mode using synchrotron radiation revealed a resolution of 300 nm. As examples we show 2D band mapping of bilayer graphene, 3D mapping of the Fermi surface of Cu, CD-ARPES for intercalated indenene layers and the sp valence bands of Cu and Au, and full-field photoelectron diffraction patterns of Ge.

Direct resolution of unoccupied states in solids via two photon photoemission

Abstract:Non-linear effects in photoemission are shown to open a new access to the band structure of unoccupied states in solids, totally different from hitherto used photoemission spectroscopy. Despite its second-order nature, strong resonant transitions occur, obeying exact selection rules of energy, crystal symmetry, and momentum. Ab-initio calculations are used to demonstrate that such structures are present in low-energy laser spectroscopy experimental measurements on Si previously published. Similar resonances are expected in ultraviolet angle-resolved photoemission spectra, as shown in a model calculation on Al.

High energy photoelectron diffraction: model calculations and future possibilities

Abstract:We discuss the theoretical modelling of x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) with hard x-ray excitation at up to 20 keV, using the dynamical theory of electron diffraction to illustrate the characteristic aspects of diffraction patterns resulting from such localized emission sources in a multi-layer crystal. We show via dynamical calculations for diamond, Si, and Fe that the dynamical theory well predicts available current data for lower energies around 1 keV, and that the patterns for energies above about 1 keV are dominated by Kikuchi bands which are created by the dynamical scattering of electrons from lattice planes. The origin of the fine structure in such bands is discussed from the point of view of atomic positions in the unit cell. The profiles and positions of the element-specific photoelectron Kikuchi bands are found to be sensitive to lattice distortions (e.g. a 1% tetragonal distortion) and the position of impurities or dopants with respect to lattice sites. We also compare the dynamical calculations to results from a cluster model that is more often used to describe lower-energy XPD. We conclude that hard XPD (HXPD) should be capable of providing unique bulk-sensitive structural information for a wide variety of complex materials in future experiments.

Abstract:The structures, strain fields, and defect distributions in solid materials underlie the mechanical and physical properties across numerous applications. Many modern microstructural microscopy tools characterize crystal grains, domains and defects required to map lattice distortions or deformation, but are limited to studies of the (near) surface. Generally speaking, such tools cannot probe the structural dynamics in a way that is representative of bulk behavior. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction based imaging has long mapped the deeply embedded structural elements, and with enhanced resolution, Dark Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM) can now map those features with the requisite nm-resolution. However, these techniques still suffer from the required integration times due to limitations from the source and optics. This work extends DFXM to X-ray free electron lasers, showing how the $10^{12}$ photons per pulse available at these sources offer structural characterization down to 100 fs resolution (orders of magnitude faster than current synchrotron images). We introduce the XFEL DFXM setup with simultaneous bright field microscopy to probe density changes within the same volume. This work presents a comprehensive guide to the multi-modal ultrafast high-resolution X-ray microscope that we constructed and tested at two XFELs, and shows initial data demonstrating two timing strategies to study associated reversible or irreversible lattice dynamics.

Ultrafast extreme ultraviolet photoemission without space charge

Abstract:Time- and Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from surfaces can be used to record the dynamics of electrons and holes in condensed matter on ultrafast time scales. However, ultrafast photoemission experiments using extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) light have previously been limited by either space-charge effects, low photon flux, or limited tuning range. In this article, we describe space-charge-free XUV photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with up to 5 nA of average sample current using a tunable cavity-enhanced high-harmonic source operating at 88 MHz repetition rate. The source delivers $ > 10^{11}$ photons/s in isolated harmonics to the sample over a broad photon energy range from 18 to 37 eV with a spot size of $58 \times 100 \; \mu$m$^2$. From photoelectron spectroscopy data, we place conservative upper limits on the XUV pulse duration and photon energy bandwidth of 93 fs and 65 meV, respectively. The high photocurrent, lack of space charge distortions of the photoelectron spectra, and excellent isolation of individual harmonic orders allow us to observe the laser-assisted photoelectric effect with sideband amplitudes as low as $6 \times 10^{-4}$, enabling time-resolved XUV photoemission experiments in a qualitatively new regime.
