Abstract:Room-temperature ortho-arylation and acetoxylation of anilides have been achieved using cationic palladium (Pd[TFA](+)) as catalyst and (NH4)(2)S2O8 as oxidant. Preliminary investigation of the mechanism suggests that palladium may have different oxidation states in the catalytic cycles of these two transformations.

Abstract:The results from a direct palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between a variety of olefins with acrylate through vinylic C-H activation that give the corresponding butadienes in moderate to good yields and stereoselectivities are reported. Given the reaction's ability to tolerate a wide range of styrenes, aliphatic alkenes and acrylates, this atom- and step-economical methodology offers a straightforward method to forge new C-C bonds of the valuable diene products from readily available starting materials under very mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:A palladium/norbornene-catalyzed ortho acylation for the efficient synthesis of functionalized alkyl aryl ketones is reported. Studies on the electronic and steric properties of mixed aryl anhydrides indicated that the cross-coupling favored with the electron-enriched aryl acyl group. DFT calculation on the oxidative addition of Pd(II) with 2,4,6-(Cl)3C6H2CO2C(O)Ph suggested that 2,4,6-(Cl)3C6H2C(O)–O bond cleavage was more kinetically disfavored than that of the PhC(O)–O bond by 11.7 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Described herein is an efficient new method for ortho-olefination of anilides in the presence of AgSbF6 and NaOAc via rhodium(III)-catalyzed internal oxidative C–H bond activation based on hydroxyl as directing and oxidative group. The new reaction shows a good functional group tolerance and an exclusive mono-selectivity. Abstract:A method was presented for the acylation of arenes using various aldehydes through dual CH activation at room temperature. The Pd-catalyst is initially activated to a triple state by absorbing energy from blue light. Furthermore, the 3 Pd(AcO) 2 required lower activation free energy to transition state 3 ( TS-2 ) based on the DFT calculation to ensure the reaction being proceeded at room temperature. This aldehyde-derived acyl radical merged with Pd-catalyzed activation of arenes to afford the cross coupling products.

Abstract:A novel palladium catalyzed direct ortho-arylation of N-phenacylpyridinium bromide was developed. The amazing N-phenacyl group regioselectively activates the C-H bond of pyridine and automatically departs from the arylated products. A kinetic isotope effect study proved that the reaction went through a C-H-bond activation pathway and 2,6-diphenylpyridine was produced stepwise from 2-phenylpyridine.

Abstract:A copper/silver-mediated oxidative ortho-ethynylation of unactivated aryl C-H bonds with terminal alkyne has been developed. The reaction uses the removable PIP directing group and features broad substrate scope, high functional-group tolerance, and compatibility with a wide range of heterocycles, providing an efficient synthesis of aryl alkynes. This procedure highlights the potential of copper catalysts to promote unique, synthetically enabling C-H functionalization reactions that lie outside of the current scope of precious metal catalysis.

Abstract:AbstractDespite much progress has been made in the asymmetric α‐arylation reactions of cyclic ketones, lactones and lactams, the enantioselective α‐arylation of acyclic carbonyl compounds lagged much behind due to the in situ generated Z/E‐enolate intermediates leading to opposite enantiomers. Especially, the asymmetric α‐arylation of acyclic aldehydes is a long‐standing challenge, because of the highest activity among carbonyl compounds leading to various competitive side reactions. Herein we reported an efficient Pd‐catalyzed asymmetric intermolecular α‐arylation reaction of α‐alkyl‐α‐aryl disubstituted aldehydes with aryl bromides, which provides a rapid access to chiral aldehydes bearing an α‐all‐carbon quaternary stereocenter in moderate to good yields with good er in most cases. In addition, a pair of enantiomers could be easily prepared with the use of the same ligand by exchanging the aryl groups of aldehyde and aryl bromide.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient palladium-catalyzed synthesis of aromatic ketones and isoindolobenzimidazoles has been developed via selective aromatic CH bond acylation. The protocol uses palladium acetate as the catalyst, readily available carboxylic acids as the acylating reagents, trifluoroacetic anhydride as the activated agent of the acids, and the corresponding aromatic ketones and isoindolobenzimidazoles were obtained in good to excellent yields. This finding should provide a new and useful strategy for synthesis of aromatic ketones and isoindolobenzimidazoles.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed C-H activation reactions directed by a removable 2-pyridylsulfinyl group were developed. Aromatic olefination products were formed in good yields on treatment of 2-(phenylsulfinyl)pyridines with alkenes in the presence of a Pd catalyst. The reaction tolerates a wide range of substituted alkenes, including various acrylates and styrenes. The controlled experiments indicated that the 2-pyridyl moiety, rather than the sulfinyl, played the role of ligand. The final reductive desulfonylation affords the stilbenes, sulfides, and disulfides with different reductive conditions, respectively. More importantly, this transformation could also be applied in arylation through dual C-H activation.
