Abstract:To investigate the influence of hydrogen bonds and secondary ligands on the structures and properties of the resulting frameworks, five new Co(II) compounds have been synthesized by the reactions of Co(II) salts and 3,5-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethoxy)benzoic acid (HL) with four rationally selected dicarboxylic acid ligands. Without secondary ligand, we got one compound [CoL2(H2O)2]n·2nH2O (1), which possesses a 1D chain structure. In the presence of ancillary ligands, namely, 1,3-adamantanedicarboxylic acid (H2adbc), terephthalic acid (H2tpa), thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2tdc) and 1,4-benzenedithioacetic acid (H2bdtc), four 3D structures [Co2L2(adbc)]n·nH2O (2), [Co2L2(tpa)]n (3), [Co2L2(tdc)]n (4), [Co2L2(bdtc)(H2O)]n (5) were obtained, respectively. It can be observed from the architectures of 1–5 that hydrogen bonds and secondary ligands both have great effects on the spatial connective fashions, resulting in the formation of various dimensional compounds. The XRPD, TGA data of title polymers and the magnetic properties for 2 and 5 have also been investigated.

Abstract:Facilitated by multiple stacking interactions between components, two kinds of metalla-links containing molecular Borromean rings (623 links) and head-to-tail cyclic [3]catenanes (613 links), as isomers, were constructed in high yield by introducing tri-μ-methoxyl-dinuclear complexes [(Cp*M)2(μ-OCH3)3][OTf] (M = RhIII or IrIII, Cp* = η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, OTf = triflate) as unusual cationic guests during coordination-driven assembly. The topology of these intricate structures was controlled by strategically selecting two dipyridyl ligands that differ in their coordination orientations, as evidenced by X-ray crystallography and electrospray ionization-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry analysis. The behavior of the abovementioned metalla-links in solution was monitored and further studied by the detailed NMR techniques.

Abstract:Although catenated cages have been widely constructed due to their unique and elegant topological structures, cyclic catenanes formed by the connection of multiple catenane units have been rarely reported. Herein, based on the orthogonal metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we prepare a series of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes, whose structures are clearly evidenced by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Owing to the multiple positively charged nature, as well as the potential synergistic effect of the Cu(I) and Pt(II) metal ions, the cyclic bis[2]catenanes display broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for the construction of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes but also explores their applications as superior antibacterial agents, which will promote the construction of advanced supramolecular structures for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The solvothermal reactions of 1,1'-oxybis[3,5-di-4-pyridine]-benzene (L) and transition metal cations (Co and Ni) afford five novel coordination polymers in the presence of flexible bridging ligands (4,4'-H2nba = 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenylamine, H2cam = d-camphoric acid, 4,4'-H2sdb = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid, H2chdc = 1,4-trans-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid), namely {[Co2L2(OH)2(nba)]·2DMF}n (), {[CoL(cam)(H2O)]}n (), {[Co3(L)(4,4'-sdb)3(H2O)]·1.5CH3CN·4H2O}n (), {[Ni3(L)(4,4'-sdb)3(H2O)]·1.5CH3CN·4H2O}n (), and {[Ni2L2(chdc)2(H2O)2]·(H2O)3}n () (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). Their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Complex reveals a 2-fold interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) framework with the Schläfli symbol {4·8·10(4)}{4·8·10} topology. Compound crystallizes in the achiral space group with the d-camphorate ligand racemized. Compounds and reveal similar structure with the {3·4(4)·6}{3(2)·4(8)·5(9)·6(9)} topology based on a linear trinuclear building block M3(OOCR)6 (M = Co(ii) or Ni(ii)). Compound is a wavy sheet, where both carboxylate and L ligands act as bidentate ligands. Moreover, UV-Visible absorption spectra of complexes , and the magnetic properties of have been investigated.

Abstract:Eight novel coordination polymers, [Mn(L-1)(2)(H2O)(2)]Cl-2-2H(2)O (1, L-1 = bis(N-imidazolyl)methane), [Fe(L-1)(2)(NCS)(2)] (2), [Zn(nba)(2)L-2] (3, nba = p-nitrobenzoate, L-2 = 1,4-bis(N-imidazolyl)butane), [Ni(L-2)(hba)(2)]center dot(MeOH)(2)]center dot 2MeOH (4, hba = p-hydroxybenzoate), [Cd(L-2)(1.5)(NCS)(2)] (5), [Cd(L-2)(2)(NO3)(2)] (6), [Cd(L-2)(2)(tos)(2)] (tos = p-tolylsulfonate, 7), and [Ni(L-2)(3)](NO3)(2) (8), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with the flexible ligands, and their structures were fully characterized. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit one-dimensional (1D) double-stranded chain structures resulting from doubly bridged [Mn(L-1)(2)(H2O)(2)] and [Fe(NCS)(2)], respectively. Complexes 3 and 4 have 1D zigzag chain structures in which [Zn(nba)(2)] and [Ni(hba)(2)(MeOH)(2)] units are held together by L-2 bridges, respectively. The polymeric cadmium complexes 5-7 have two-dimensional (213) grid network structures with (4,4) topology. Complex 8 is a cationic polycatenane, and the nitrate anions occupy the triangular channels formed by the interpenetrating networks. Complexes 2, 3, 5, and 6 are stable up to 300 degrees C. Photoluminescent studies show that complexes 3 and 5-7 display intense blue emissions.

Abstract:Along with our recent investigations on Ni and Co coordination frameworks of a flexible tripodal ligand of H3TTG (N,N′,N″-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyltris-glycine), four new complexes {[Ni(HTTG)(4,4′-bpy)(H2O)3]·(H2O)2}n (1), {[Ni2(HTTG)2(bpe)2(H2O)]·(H2O)6}n (2), {[Co2(HTTG)2(bpe)2(H2O)]·(H2O)6}n (3) and {[Co3(TTG)2(bpe)2]·(H2O)2}n (4) were hydrothermally synthesized through reactions of this ligand with different pyridyl-containing ligands {4,4′-bpy (4,4-bipyridine), bpe [1,2-bi(4-pyridyl)ethane]}, respectively. Due to various coordination modes and conformations of the flexible tricarboxylate ligand and pyridyl-containing coligands, these complexes exhibit structural and dimensional diversity. Complex 1 shows a unique 1D chain bridged by the R22(8) hydrogen bonds between the carboxylate groups, the triazine rings, and hydrogen-bonded networks of the solvent water molecules as well. Complexes 2 and 3 are isomorphous and both exhibit special 2D (8,2)-connected double-layer structures with two kinds of 1D channels constructed by the coordination bonds and hydrogen bonding interactions, respectively. Complex 4 features a 3-D network with scarce (8,3)-connected rutile-related topology with a Schläfli symbol (42,622,7,83)(4,62)2 based on secondary building units (SBUs) of linear cobalt clusters [Co3(CO2)4]2−. Significantly, with increasing flexibility of the pyridyl-containing coligands, these corresponding complexes become more and more complicated. In addition, their physical properties such as thermal, XPRD, and magnetism have also been investigated.

Abstract:Two novel two-dimensional (2D) and one three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymers[Ni(HTTG)(H2O)2]n (1), [Co(HTTG)(H2O)2]n (2), and [Cd(HTTG)]n (3)have been hydrothermally synthesized by self-assembly of an unexplored tripodal ligand H3TTG (N,N‘,N‘ ‘-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyltris-glycine) and corresponding metal salts. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the three polymers exhibit novel frameworks due to diverse coordination conformations and different acid forms of the flexible tricaboxylate ligands. The isostructural complexes 1 and 2 possess 2D frameworks with M(H2O)2(CO2)2 chains bridged by the ligands, and the resulting 3D networks were extended through R22(8) hydrogen bonds between the undeprotonated carboxylate groups and the triazine rings as well as π···π interactions between the triazine rings. Complex 3 shows a 3D interpenetrating compact network with inorganic Cd2O2 chains interconnected by the flexible organic ligands. Topological analysis indicates that in all three complexes the tripodal ligand acts as a four-connected square-planar node, linking four-connected square-planar or tetrahedral-connected metal centers to form interesting two-dimensional (2D) (4,4) (in 1 and 2) and three-dimensional (3D) 2-fold interpenetrating PtS topologies (in 3), respectively. Interestingly, both 1 and 2 exhibit ferromagnetic interactions within the chains bridged by the syn−anti carboxylate groups and the water molecules alternately, and complex 3 displays strong photoluminescent properties at 413 nm due to the coordination of the ligands with the metal centers.

Abstract:We report a design strategy for integrative assembly of heteromeric [2]catenanes. The design focuses on the shape and functional group match of two different metalla-rectangles. A series of dipyridyl ligands with different lengths, widths and functional groups were designed and used for assembly experiments. Six heteromeric [2]catenanes were obtained both by direct mixture of two pre-assembled metalla-rectangles and one-pot three-component self-assembly. Multiple analytic methods were employed to characterize the catenanes, including single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis.
Infinite Twisted Polycatenanes

Abstract:Poly[n]catenanes have exceptional mechanical bonding properties that give them tremendous potential for use in the development of molecular machines and soft materials. Synthesizing these compounds has, however, proven to be a formidable challenge. Herein, we describe a concise method for the construction of twisted polycatenanes. Our approach involves using preorganized double helicates as templates, linked crosswise in a linear fashion by either silver ions or triple bonds. By using this approach, we successfully synthesized twisted polycatenanes with both coordination and covalent bonding employing Ag(I) ions and ethynylene units, respectively, as the linkages and leveraging the same Ag(I)-templated double helicate in both cases. Synthesis with Ag(I) ions formed a single-crystalline one-dimensional (1D) coordination poly[n]catenane, and synthesis using ethynylene units generated 1D fibers which self-assembled with solvents to form a gel. Our results confirm the potential of multi-stranded metallohelicates for creating sophisticated mechanically interlocked molecules and polymers, which could pave the way for exploration in the realms of molecular nanotopology and materials design.
Main-Chain Linear Polyrotaxanes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Conformational Modulation

Abstract:Two functional main-chain linear polyrotaxanes, one a covalent polymeric chain that threads through many macrocycles (P1) and the other a poly[n]rotaxane chain that is composed of many repeating rotaxane units (P2), were synthesized by employing strong crown-ether/ammonium-based (DB24C8/DBA) hostguest interactions and click chemistry. Energy transfer between the wheel and axle units in both polyrotaxanes was used to provide insight into the conformational information of their resulting polyrotaxanes. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy were performed to understand the conformation differences between polymers P1 and P2 in solution. Additional investigations by using dynamic/static light scattering and atomic force microscopy illustrated that polymer P1 was unbending and had a rigid rod-like structure, whilst polymer P2 was curved and flexible. This flexible topology facilitated the self-assembly of polymer P2 into relatively large ball-shaped particles. In addition, the energy transfer between the wheel and axle units was controlled by the addition of specific anions or base. The anion-induced energy enhancement was attributed to a change in electrostatic interactions between the polymer chains. The base-driven molecular shuttle broke the DB24C8/DBA hostguest interactions. These results confirm that both intra- and intermolecular electrostatic interactions are crucial for modulating conformational topology, which determines the assembly of polyrotaxanes in solution.
Synthesis and characterization of metal complexes with a mixed 4-imidazole-containing ligand and a variety of multi-carboxylic acids

Abstract:Six new metal-organic coordination polymers [Ni(L)(adip)(H2O)] (1), [Co(L)(adip)]center dot H2O (2), [Cd-2(L)(adip)(2)] (3), [Ni(L)(oxba)]center dot H2O (4), [Co(L)(obea)]center dot H2O (5) and [Mn-3(L)(2)(bta)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (6) were synthesized by reactions of the corresponding metal salt with the rigid ligand 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-4-yl) benzene (L) and different multi-carboxylic acids of adipic acid (H(2)adip), 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (H(2)oxba), 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid (H(2)obea), benzene-1,3,5-triacetic acid (H(3)bta), respectively. The structures of the complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 1-4 have entangled structures with different topologies: 1 is a 2-fold interpenetrating two-dimensional (2D) network with (4,4) topology containing rare meso-helical chains; 3 is a three-dimensional (3D) uninodal 8-connected self-penetrating net; 2 and 4 are a 3-fold interpenetrating dmp 3D net. Complex 5 is a 2D network with (4,4) topology, while 6 is a typical (3,8)-connected tfz-d 3D net based on the trinuclear Mn(II) subunits. Complex 3 exhibits intense light blue emission in the solid state at room temperature and the results of magnetic measurements show that there are antiferromagnetic interactions in 6.

Abstract:A series of novel coordination polymers with different structures have been synthesized by reacting Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) salts of aliphatic/aromatic dicarboxylic acids with flexible bisimidazole derivatives. The dicarboxylates can adopt chelating μ2, bridging μ2 and chelating-bridging μ3 coordination modes, or act as uncoordinated counter anions. The coordination polymers exhibit 1D single chain, ladder, 2D sheet and 3D network structures.

Its structure is constructed by mixed-ligands and chains of hexa-coordinated Mn(II) linkers: ONA groups bridge Mn ions to give the right-handed and left-handed helical [(ONA)Mn](n) chains running along (010). The helical chains are further held together by NA groups to form a novel 3-D framework.
Rational Design of Polynuclear Organometallic Assemblies from a Simple Heteromultifunctional Ligand.

Abstract:In modern coordination chemistry, supramolecular coordination complexes take advantage of ligand design to control the shapes and sizes of such architectures. Here we describe how to utilize starting building blocks and a multifunctional ligand to rationally design and synthesize different types of discrete assemblies. Using a hydroxamate ligand featuring two pair of chelating sites together with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium fragments, we were able to construct a series multinuclear organometallic macrocycles and cages through stepwise coordination-driven self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational work, show that selective coordination modes were ascribed to the significant electronic density differences of the two chelating sites, (O,O') and (N,N'). The results underline the advantages of the discrimination between soft and hard binding sites, and suggest that hydroxamic acids can be used as a versatile class of facile multifunctional scaffold for the construction of novel two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures.
Construction of Coordination-Driven Self-Assembled [5 + 5] Pentagons Using Metal−Carbonyl Dipyridine Ligands

Abstract:The coordination-driven self-assembly of two metal-carbonyl-cluster-coordinated dipyridyl donors, (4-C(5)H(4)N)(2)C[triple bond]CCo(2)(CO)(6) (1) and (4-C(5)H(4)N)(2)C[triple bond]CMo(2)Cp(2)(CO)(4) (2), with a linear diplatinum(II) acceptor ligand was investigated. The structures of the resulting self-assembled polygons were found to be controlled by the steric bulk of the metal-carbonyl cluster adduct. The use of a sterically less imposing ligand 1 resulted in a pentagon-hexagon mixture, which was characterized by electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The exclusive formation of a [5 + 5] pentagon was achieved by the self-assembly of the bulkier molybdenum donor ligand 2 with a linear organoplatinum(II) acceptor ligand. Molecular force field modeling was used to study the structural details of the pentagonal and hexagonal architectures. The first Fe(3)-Co(6)-Pt(6) trimetal [3 + 3] hexagon was also synthesized via the combination of 1 with a 120 degrees ferrocenyldiplatinum(II) acceptor.

Abstract:Upon coordination to catenane ligands derived from interlocked macrocycles of different size, gradual deviation of the coordination structure of the resulting 4-coordinate copper(I) complexes from the preferred tetrahedral geometry is resulted, and such structural distortion represents a new mechanism for modulating the thermodynamic, kinetic, photophysical and electrochemical properties of the transition metal complexes via ligand mechanical interlocking. Results from this study hence not only first demonstrate that the extend of catenand effect on metal coordination properties can be tuned by a physical attribute characteristic to mechanical interlocking, but also are implicated in the reactivity and potential applications of a distinct, rarely studied class of transition metal complexes supported by mechanically bonded ligands.
