Abstract:We report the first X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study of a single crystal of the rare-earth endohedral fullerene Dy@C82. The lattice is found to be body-centered cubic (a = 25.79 A, space group $I\bar {4}3d)$ which is at variance with previous reports and confirms that several types of structures can be stabilized in Dy@C82. X-ray diffraction/diffuse scattering methods reveal no low-temperature change down to 12 K for the present structure. The Raman spectroscopy data are comparable to those of other M@C82 endohedral compounds. However, the Dy oxidation state and the force constant of the low-frequency metal-cage stretching mode do not follow the simple relationship observed before.

Abstract:The local structural and electronic properties of individual metallofullerenes are studied using scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and theoretical simulations. The energy-resolved metal-cage hybrid states of a single endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C82 isomer I have been spatially mapped, supporting a complex picture consisting of the orbital hybridization and charge transfer for the interaction between the cage and the metal atom. The relative position of the encapsulated Dy atom inside the cage and the molecular orientation on the surface have been inferred by comparing the experimental results with theoretical simulations. The combined technique provides promising applications in the fields of in situ characterization and diagnostics of metallofullerene-based nanodevices.

Abstract:A family of dilanthanum-containing endohedral metallofullerene La2C2n (n = 46-51) was synthesized recently. In the present work, a systematical investigation on La2C96 series including the carbide clusterfullerene form La2C2@C94 and the conventional dimetallofullerene form La2@C96 was implemented by density functional theory, combined with statistical mechanics. Three isomers, i.e., La2@D2(191838)-C96, La2C2@Cs(153479)-C94, and La2C2@C1(153491)-C94 were disclosed to be thermodynamically stable at the temperature region of endohedral metallofullerene formation. La2@D2(191838)-C96 is the prevailing isomer at low temperature, while La2C2@Cs(153479)-C94 and La2C2@C1(153491)-C94 are the most and second-most abundant isomers at high temperature. Interestingly, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of La2C2@C1(153491)-C94 is distributed on one pole of the cage, and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of this isomer is mainly located on the equator of the cage, which can facilitate synthesis of regioselective derivatives. This work will provide useful information for further experimental identification and application of La2C96.

Abstract:Trimetallic carbide clusterfullerenes (TCCFs) encapsulating a quinary M3C2 cluster represent a special family of endohedral fullerenes with an open-shell electronic configuration. Herein, a novel TCCF based on a medium-sized rare earth metal, dysprosium (Dy), is synthesized for the first time. The molecular structure of Dy3C2@I h(7)-C80 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the encapsulated Dy3C2 cluster adopts a bat ray configuration, in which the acetylide unit C2 is elevated above the Dy3 plane by ∼1.66 Å, while Dy-Dy distances are ∼3.4 Å. DFT computational analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the endohedral cluster has an unusual formal charge distribution of (Dy3)8+(C2)2-@C80 6- and features an unprecedented three-center single-electron Dy-Dy-Dy bond, which has never been reported for lanthanide compounds. Moreover, this electronic structure is different from that of the analogous Sc3C2@I h(7)-C80 with a (Sc3)9+(C2)3-@C80 6- charge distribution and no metal-metal bonding.

Abstract:Systematic studies on M2C98 (M = Sc, Y, La, Gd, Lu) series by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods disclose that having large concentrations within the temperature interval of fullerene formation, the metal-carbide endohedral fullerenes M2C2@C-98 are found to be more stable than the dimetallofullerenes M-2@C-98. When encapsulating M2C2 clusters, three types of C-96 cages will present excellent thermodynamic stabilities and become the largest metal-carbide endohedral fullerenes so far. The dynamic mechanisms of the internal C-2 moieties in the most important M2C2@C-96 species have been discussed, which provide profound understanding of metal carbide endohedral fullerenes. Moreover, C-13 NMR and IR spectra have been simulated to aid further experimental identification and characterization.

Abstract:Encapsulation of transition metals represents a crucial method for modifying the electronic structure and regulating the reactivity of fullerene, thereby expanding its applications. Herein, we present calculations with density functional theory methods to investigate the mechanisms of the Diels‐Alder (DA) reactions of cyclopentadiene and La@C60 or Gd@C60 as well as their tricationic derivatives. Our findings indicate that the encapsulation of La and Gd into the C60 cage is thermodynamically favorable. The DA reactions are favored by the presence of La and Gd, with lower barriers, though the regioselectivity, favoring 6‐6 bonds in the fullerene, is not affected. The effect of external electric fields has been also considered.

Abstract:The stabilization performance of Th@C74 series have been determined by using density functional theory methods combined with statistical thermodynamic analyses. Results indicate that the only isolated pentagon rule satisfied isomer Th@D3h(14246)-C74 possesses excellent thermodynamic stabilities. The frontier molecular orbital analysis demonstrates that four-electron-transfer from metal to D3h(14246)-C74 cage occurs. Further interaction mechanisms of the X@C74 (X = Th, U, Sc2C2) revealed that, besides of electron-transfer, the interaction between metal and pentagon adjacency plays also an important factor determining relative stabilities of C74 endohedral metallofullerenes. The covalent interactions between inner metals and C74 cage should not be neglected.

Abstract:B3LYP/6–31G(d) hybrid HF/DFT calculations were carried out to determine the structural and electronic properties of the endohedral complex of C60 with tetrahedrane C4H4. It was demonstrated that C4H4 was seated in the center of the C60 cage and existed in a molecular form inside the fullerene. The formation of this complex was endothermic with inclusion energy of 141.05kcal/mol. C4H4 endohedral doping slightly perturbed the molecular orbitals of C60. The calculated HOMO–LUMO gaps, the electron affinity (EA) and the ionizational potential (IP) indicated that C4H4@C60 seemed to be more kinetically reactive than C60. The IR active modes and harmonic vibrational frequencies of C4H4@C60 were also discussed.

Abstract:Understanding metal-metal bonding involving f-block elements has been a challenging goal in chemistry. Here we report a series of mixed-valence di-metallofullerenes, ThDy@C 2 n (2 n = 72, 76, 78, and 80) and ThY@C 2 n (2 n = 72 and 78), which feature single electron actinide-lanthanide metal-metal bonds, characterized by structural, spectroscopic and computational methods. Crystallographic characterization unambiguously confirmed that Th and Y or Dy are encapsulated inside variably sized fullerene carbon cages. The ESR study of ThY@ D 3 h (5)-C 78 shows a doublet as expected for an unpaired electron interacting with Y, and a SQUID magnetometric study of ThDy@ D 3 h (5)-C 78 reveals a high-spin ground state for the whole molecule. Theoretical studies further confirm the presence of a single-electron bonding interaction between Y or Dy and Th, due to a significant overlap between hybrid spd orbitals of the two metals.

Abstract:Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes, in which encapsulated metals form covalent metal-metal bonds inside, are an emerging class of endohedral metallofullerenes. Herein, we reported quantum-chemical studies on the electronic structures, chemical bonding, and dynamic fluxionality behavior of endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes Lu2@C2n (2n = 76-88). Multiple bonding analysis approaches, including molecular orbital analysis, the natural bond orbital analysis, electron localization function, adaptive natural density partitioning analysis, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules, have unambiguously revealed one two-center two-electron σ covalent bond between two Lu ions in fullerenes. Energy decomposition analysis with the natural orbitals for chemical valence method on the bonding nature between the encapsulated metal dimer and the fullerene cage suggested the existence of two covalent bonds between the metal dimer and fullerenes, giving rise to a covalent bonding nature between the metal dimer and fullerene cage and a formal charge model of [Lu2]2+@[C2n]2-. For Lu2@C76, the dynamic fluxionality behavior of the metal dimer Lu2 inside fullerene C76 has been revealed via locating the transition state with an energy barrier of 5 kcal/mol. Further energy decomposition analysis calculations indicate that the energy barrier is controlled by a series of terms, including the geometric deformation energy, electrostatic interaction, and orbital interactions.

Abstract:We performed quantum chemical calculations on the geometries, electronic structures, bonding properties, and stability strategy of endohedral metallofullerenes TM@C28 (TM = Sc−, Y−, La−, Ti, Zr, Hf, V+, Nb+, Ta+). Our calculations revealed that there are three different lowest-energy structures with C2v, C3v, and Td symmetries for TM@C28. The HOMO–LUMO gap of all these structures ranges from 1.35 eV to 2.31 eV, in which [V@C28]+ has the lowest HOMO–LUMO gap of 1.35 eV. The molecular orbitals are mainly composed of fullerene cage orbitals and slightly encapsulated metal orbitals. The bonding analysis on the metal–cage interactions reveals they are dominated by the Coulomb term ΔEelstat and the orbital interaction term ΔEorb, in which the orbital interaction term ΔEorb contributes more than the Coulomb term ΔEelstat. The addition of one or two CF3 groups to [V@C28]+ could increase the HOMO–LUMO gap and further increase the stability of [V@C28]+.

Abstract:Systemic investigations on lanthanum nitride endohedral metallofullerene La3N@C92 are carried out by a hybrid density functional theory technique combined with statistical mechanics treatment. A novel isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) isomer with C2 symmetry is determined as the most suitable host cage for the encapsulation of La3N with the lowest energy and predominant thermodynamic stability related to fullerene formation. Natural electron configuration analyses reveal that electron transfer between the La3N cluster and C92 cage is mainly contributed by the 6s orbital of lanthanum atoms. The present work may supply some information reliable for synthesis and experimental characterization of large trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerenes.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) encapsulating divalent metal ions have received limited attention because of their low production yields. Here, we report the results of structural determination and chemical functionalization of a typical divalent metallofullerene, Yb@C84(II). Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies of Yb@C84/Ni(II)(OEP) cocrystals (OEP is the dianion of octaethylporphyrin) unambiguously established the chiral C2(13)-C84 cage structure and revealed multiple sites for Yb(2+), indicating a moving metal ion inside the cage. The chemical property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 was probed with the electrophillic adamantylidene carbene (1). Three monoadduct isomers were isolated and characterized. Crystallographic results of the major isomer (2b) revealed that, although the cycloaddition breaks a [5,6]-bond on the cage, Yb(2+) is localized under a hexagonal ring distant from the sites of addition. Thus, it is proved that the dynamic motion of the divalent metal ion in Yb@C84 has been effectively halted by exohedral functionalization. Spectroscopic results show that the electronic property of Yb@C2(13)-C84 is pertained in the derivatives, although the addend exerts a mild reduction effect on the electrochemical behavior of the EMF. Computational works demonstrated that addition of 1 to Yb@C2(13)-C84 is mainly driven by releasing the local strains of cage carbons rather than charge recombination, which is always prominent to the affinity of typical trivalent EMFs such as M@C2v(9)-C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Gd) toward 1. Accordingly, it is speculated that the chemical behaviors of divalent EMFs more likely resemble those of empty fullerenes because both are closed-shell compounds, but they differ from those of trivalent EMFs, which have open-shell electronic configurations instead.

Abstract:Non-isolated pentagon fullerenes with a series of special physical and chemical properties have potential applications in the fields of pharmaceutics, chemical catalysis and superconducting materials. On the basis of theoretical calculations, stabilities and aromaticities of pure and doped C32 fullerene isomers are calculated at B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level systematically for the first time. Formation enthalpies and BSSE-corrected encapsulation energies of endohedral fullerenes are also studied at the same level of theory, the changes of corrected single point energy sequence are possibly useful in controlling the proportions of different isomers in chemical synthesis.
Preparation, Characterization, and Photoelectrochemistry of Langmuir−Blodgett Films of the Endohedral Metallofullerene Dy@C82 Mixed with Metallophthalocyanines

Abstract:Stable Langmuir-Blodgett films of the endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C-82 mixed with metallophthalocyanine (MPc = copper tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine (1) and M octakis(octyloxy)phthalocyanine, M = copper (2) and zinc (3)) are fabricated from the N-2/water interface at a molar ratio of 1:1. Optical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical properties of these films have been studied. The packing of Dy@C-82/MPc is found to be dependent on the substituents and the central metal ion of MPc, resulting in different relative orientations of the MPc's macrocyclic ring plane and the metallofullerene ball in the Langmuir films. Steady anodic photocurrent responses have been demonstrated for the Dy@C-82/MPc mixture films with enhanced quantum yields compared to the pure forms of both MPc and Dy@C-82. Dy@C-82/2 (or 3) are shown to outperform Dy@C-82/1, giving quantum yields up to 7-8% under appropriate conditions. Both ground-state charge transfer and photoinduced charge transfer between Dy@C82 and the octasubstituted MPcs 2 and 3 are proposed. Comparative studies with C-60 have also been conducted.

Abstract:Endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n were synthesized and extracted with high-yield by K-H carbon-are evaporation and an effective pyridine extraction technique at high-temperature high-pressure. Laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight (LD-TOF) mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy and gas phase derivation reaction with the self-chemical ionization mass spectrometric ion system of vinyl acetate were employed for studying the electronic structures, fluorescent properties and gas phase reactivities of metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n. The experimental results suggest that endohedral metallofullerenes Tb@C-2n would have the approximate structures of Tb3+@C-2n(3-) similar to other metallofullerenes, good fluorescent emission properties and active reactivities in gas phase ion-molecular reactions.
