Abstract:A hydrogen bonding approach has been developed to facilitate the self-assembly of a new series of rigid and planar metallocyclophanes. Two new anthranilamide derivatives 1 and 2, which are incorporated with two acetylene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis (for 1), 1D and 2D 1H NMR and IR experiments reveal that, due to the formation of intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding, both compounds adopt rigid and planar conformations with the two acetylene units located at the same side of the anthranilamide skeleton. Two new metallocyclophanes 17 and 18 have been constructed in moderate yields from the reaction of 1 and 2 with trans-Pt(PEt3)2Cl2, respectively, in dichloromethane in the presence of diethylamine and cupric chloride. Fluorescent and 1H NMR investigations reveal that both 17 and 18 can efficiently complex mono- and disaccharide derivatives in chloroform, with a binding selectivity for disaccharides, which is driven by intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Four oligoanthranilamides 1-4, which are incorporated with three, five, seven, or nine benzene units, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray analysis, 1D and 2D H-1 NMR, and IR experiments reveal that all the new oligoamides adopt rigid, planar and zigzagged conformations in both solution and solid state, which are stabilized by intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding. A 5-mer oligomer 22, which is incorporated with two acetylene groups at the ends, has also been synthesized and utilized for the self-assembly of a rigid hydrogen-bonded metallocyclophane. The new rigid oligoanthranilamides represent useful building blocks for the construction of supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:A novel glycyrrhetinic acid conjugate containing uracil and 2,6-diaminopyridine units was synthesized and the exclusive supramolecular dimeric structure through six intermolecular hydrogen bonds was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS. The supramolecular dimeric structure could recognize the polar molecule in aprotic polar solvents.

Abstract:Multiferrocenyl and multiadamantyl cuboctahedron nanospheres were synthesized via rapid self-assembly reactions of twelve 90 degrees Pd-II-containing compounds and twenty-four 120 degrees organic bidentate N-ligands in acetone solution. The selected self-assembly reaction and corresponding solvent were demonstrated to be effective and simple in the preparation of self-assembled nanospheres. DOSY NMR spectroscopy, AFM images and theoretical calculations confirmed the formation of cuboctahedron complexes with the size of 4-5 nm. Multifunctional molecular self-assembly processes offer considerable synthetic advantages including significantly fewer steps, fast and facile formation of final desirable products, and will lead to a new multifunctionality platform for cuboctahedron complexes.

Abstract:C(60)(OH)(8) is a fullerenol with all the hydroxyl groups located in the same hemisphere. It combines the fascinating assembly behaviour of a Janus particle and the unique properties of a fullerene. Since the range of interparticle hydrophobic attraction in water is much longer than the particle size, C(60)(OH)(8) has a strong tendency to form aggregates. At concentrations above 1.0 x 10(-6) M, the R(g) of the aggregate is 110 nm and the aggregation number reaches 2.5 x 10(5). However, the conformation of the aggregate is not condensed, C(60)(OH)(8) can still adjust its position by transportation or rotation. Therefore, when deposited on the surface, C(60)(OH)(8) assembles into a spherical structure or a single-layered fiber on the hydrophilic surface, but it forms a toroidal structure with concentric rings on the hydrophobic surface. If illuminated with light during assembly, fibers composed of multi-braids are observed on the hydrophilic surface. Our work demonstrated that the assembly of Janus fullerenol offered a new approach to prepare novel carbon structures.

Abstract:Self-assembly by means of coordinative bond formation has opened up opportunities for the high-yield synthesis of molecules with complex topologies. However, the preparation of purely covalent molecular architectures in aqueous media has remained a challenging task. Here, we present the preparation of a three-dimensional catenane through a self-assembly process that relies on the formation of dynamic hydrazone linkages in an acidic aqueous medium. The quantitative synthesis process and the mechanically interlocked structure of the resulting catenane were established by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and HPLC studies. In addition, the labile hydrazone linkages of the individual [2]catenane components may be ‘locked’ by increasing the pH of the solution, yielding a relatively kinetically stable molecule. The present study thus details a simple approach to the creation and control of complex molecular architectures under reaction conditions that mimic biological milieux.

Abstract:The title compound, C26H21N3O3, is a chemically symmetrical molecule with one methyl group and three (4-cyanophenoxy)methyl groups bonded to a tetracoordinate C atom. It crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P (1) over bar. In the crystal structure, there are many non-covalent interactions, including O ... N short contacts and antiparallel dipole-dipole interactions. The tetracoordinate C atom of the molecule exhibits central chirality, while the three attached groups exhibit different axial chirality. The enantiomers form homochiral monolayers through enantioselective self-assembly, and the monolayers are packed in the formation of a superlattice based on alternating the two enantiomeric states. The physical image of molecular chirality as well as the concept of a superlattice with respect to chirality may provide a new insight into such a racemic crystal, which is very common in crystallography.

Abstract:An azyl group of ethylene diamine was protected by N-tert-butoxycarbonyl. The remaining azyl group then successively reacted with methyl acrylate, ethylene diamine and methyl acrylate again to afford the compound Boc-NH2-(B-COOCH3)(4) 3 (AB(4)). The ester groups and the Boc-end-group of 3 were transferred to carboxylate 4 and azyl group 5 via hydrolyzation and deprotection respectively. The fan-shape dendron molecules with 16 exterior groups 6 were obtained by condensation of 4 and 5 in the presence of DCC. The dumbbell-like dendrimer molecules 7 could expediently prepared by coupling the dendrons with two functional groups of hexanedioyl chloride. The paper describes the synthesis procedures, reports the characterization results of FTIR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR and MALDI-TOF. Comparing with the PAMAM dendrimers from the divergent method, the synthesized compounds possess accurate structures and few defections.

Abstract:Self-assembling molecules based on branched aromatic rods, which are prepared by repeating of aromatic coupling reaction and substitution, and flexible dibranched ether-type coils were synthesized. Aggregation behavior could be investigated by optical polarized microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In contrast to the molecule I which shows an isotropic liquid state, the more elongated molecules 2 and 3 are observed to organize into a 3-D primitive monoclinic lattice with three distinct nanoscale dimensions, in which rods are tilted with respect to the layer normal.
Self-assembly variation of glycyrrhetinic acid epimers: Assembly mechanism and antibacterial efficacy between 18 α-GA and 18 β-GA

Abstract:Studies have confirmed that the spatial arrangement of chiral molecules has a decisive influence on supramolecular assembly. However, the effect of epimerization caused by the change of a single chiral center on the self-assembly of chiral molecules has not been reported. Herein, we explored a pair of epimers 18 α-glycyrrhetinic acid and 18 β-glycyrrhetinic acid from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, which had completely different medicinal activities. In this study, we found that these epimers of glycyrrhetinic acid showed distinct self-assembly properties under the condition of the deionized water and a small amount of DMSO solution. Interestingly, the cis-configured 18 β-GA could form a 'head-to-tail' interlaced structure and further self-assembled to form nanoparticles, while trans-configured 18 α-GA was connected in a "head-to-head" manner, and due to the excessive steric hindrance that made it difficult to assemble. This work not only clearly demonstrates the impact of epimerization due to changes in a single chiral center on the self-assembly of chiral molecules as well as biological activity, but also provides new insights into the self-assembly of natural organic molecules in the development of nanomedicines and biofunctional materials.

Abstract:New multilayer 3D chiral molecules have been designed and synthesized asymmetrically through the strategy of center-to-multilayer folding chirality control and double Suzuki couplings. Individual diastereoisomers were readily obtained and separated via flash column chromatography. The key diastereoisomer was further converted into corresponding enantiomers. These enantiomers possess electron-deficient aromatic bridges layered with top and bottom aromatic scaffolds. X-ray structural analysis has unambiguously confirmed the configuration, and intermolecular packing results in regular planar patterns in solid crystals. The synthesis was achieved in a total of ten steps starting from commercially available starting materials.

Abstract:Bridging of calix[4]arene derivatives with optically active subunits derived from chiral LID-amino alcohols has resulted in two novel calix[4]azacrowns enantiomers S-C51H64NO7 center dot CH3OH center dot H2O (S-1) and R-C51H64NO7 center dot CH3OH center dot H2O (R-1), which were crystallized separately. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that they each encapsulate a methanol molecule by weak interactions and that they form supramolecular enantiomeric helical arrangements along the crystallographic axis, which are constructed via C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds involving bridging water molecules. A similar helical arrangement previously reported calix[4]azacrown compound S-C108H146N2O16 (S-2).

Abstract:The rod-coil molecules with n-shaped rod building block, consisting of an anthracene unit and two biphenyl groups linked together with acetylenyl bonds at the 1,8-position of anthracene as a rigid rod segment, and the alkyl or alkyloxy chains with various length (i.e., methoxy- (1), octyl- (2), hexadecyl- (3)) at the 10-position of anthracene and poly(ethylene oxide) with the number of repeating units of 7 connected with biphenyl as coil segments were synthesized. The molecular structures were characterized by H-1 NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. The self-assembling behavior of new type of molecules 1-3 was investigated by means of DSC, POM, and SAXS at the bulk state. These molecules with a n-shaped rod building block segment self-assemble into supramolecular structures through the combination of pi-pi stacking of rigid rod building blocks and micro-phase separation of the rod and coil blocks. SAXS studies reveal that molecules 1 and 2 show hexagonal columnar and rectangular columnar structures in the liquid crystalline phase, respectively; meanwhile, molecules 1-3 self-organize into lamellar structures in the crystalline state. In addition, self-assembling studies of molecules 1-3 by DLS and TEM indicated that these molecules self-assemble into elongated nanofibers in aqueous medium. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Bowl-like tris-[(N-methyl-2-imidazoyl)]methoxy]cyclotriguaiacyclene (TMIM-CTG) (1) was synthesized and cocrystallized with ethanol, resorcinol, and phloroglucinol to afford three molecular complexes (TMIM-CTG)-(ethanol)(3) (2), (TMIM-CTG)-(resorcinol)-(CH3CN)(2) (3), and (TMIM-CTG)-(phloroglucinol)center dot(CH3CN)(2) (4), whose Structures have been determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. Except for the hydrogen bonds between imidazole of 1 and the hydroxyl group of alcohol/phenols (O-H center dot center dot center dot N), all crystals contain self-inclusion motifs with cooperative C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, interactions which can be considered as the secondary way to extend the primary hydrogen-bonded networks to (lie frameworks with higher levels. In complex 2. two adjacent TMIM-CTGs form a self-clasping dimer by an edge-to-face C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction between the imidazole ring and the benzene ring of CTG, which is further extended to a one-dimensional chain by the pi-pi. interactions between adjacent imidazole rings. The ethanol molecules interact with TMIM-CTGs by hydrogen bonding and fill channels within these chains. In complex 3, the self-assembly of TMIG-CTG and resorcinol Molecules by hydrogen bonding affords the Zigzag chain, which is then extended to the (4.4) sheet by the self-inclusion between TMIG-CTGs. Complex 4 contains a two-dimensional 4.8(2) hydrogen-bonding network betweenTMIG-CTG and phloroglucinol molecules, and the self-inclusion Of TMIG-CTGs extends it to,I novel three-dimensional supramolecular framework. The acetonitrile molecules in two latter Crystals arc included within the extended organic framework.

Abstract:The total synthesis of carbon onions is a significant challenge in the fields of materials science and organic chemistry. To date, the synthesis of even a fragment of fullerene C240 and its smallest carbon onion C60@C240 remains poorly explored. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy to produce a novel π-extended molecular crown-shaped molecule (MC3) containing curved pentagonal and hexagonal units. This molecular crown represents a curved model compound for fullerene C240 and is fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and from its emission spectra. Its supramolecular host–guest interaction with fullerene C60 is also investigated. MC3 and C60@MC3 can potentially be employed as seeds or templates for the bottom-up synthesis of fullerene C240 and the carbon onion C60@C240, respectively.

Abstract:Self-assembly is a fundamental bottom-up tool for the construction of living or synthetic materials. Owing to the specific, definite, and directional host-guest interactions, heteroditopic monomers has become one of the classic models as building blocks in self-assembly investigation. Driven by the unique multiple CH center dot center dot center dot 7r interactions between the pillar[5]arene cavity and the linear n-alkyl group, copillar[5]arenes have become one of the simplest and optimal models for the construction of heteroditopic monomers in recent years. Here, by comparison of the reported crystal structures of heteroditopic copillar[5]arenes with six new ones (P6Br, P8Br, P6Im, P10Im, P4 superset of acetonnitrile, and P8Br superset of succinonitrile), we found that their self-assembly manner in the solid state was primarily decided by the competition of the pillar[5]arene cavity between the threading guest moiety and the solvent molecules (or external competitors). When the competitor had much higher affinity to the pillar[5]arene cavity, a traditional host- guest complex would be formed in the solid state. When the threading guest moiety showed much higher affinity, [cn]daisy chains (normally [c2]) would be formed. It was further found that only when they had similar bonding abilities with the pillar[5]arene cavity, [an]daisy chains could be formed in the solid state.
