Abstract:Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were dispersed and loaded homogeneously onto the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets via an electrostatic self-assembly process. The selective modification of the outmost surface with g-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) was performed. The outmost surface of the APTES-HNTs (APHNTs) was converted into a positively charged surface under acidic conditions due to the existence of amine-tailed short organic chains. A combination then occurred driven by the electrostatic force between the negative GO sheets and positive APHNTs. A HNTs@rGO composite (HGC) was fabricated after reduction of GO and investigated as an adsorbent and electrode material. The superior behavior of HGC for rhodamine B (RhB) removal and high performance as a supercapacitor highlight the potential applications of HGC in waste water treatment and energy storage issues.

Abstract:While electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising methods to store light/electrical energy in chemical bonds, a key challenge remains in the realization of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalyst with large surface area, good electrical conductivity, high catalytic properties, and low fabrication cost. Here, a facile solution reduction method is demonstrated for mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires treated with NaBH4. The high‐surface‐area mesopore feature leads to efficient surface reduction in solution at room temperature, which allows for retention of the nanowire morphology and 1D charge transport behavior, while at the same time substantially increasing the oxygen vacancies on the nanowire surface. Compared to pristine Co3O4 nanowires, the reduced Co3O4 nanowires exhibit a much larger current of 13.1 mA cm‐2 at 1.65 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a much lower onset potential of 1.52 V vs RHE. Electrochemical supercapacitors based on the reduced Co3O4 nanowires also show a much improved capacitance of 978 F g‐1 and reduced charge transfer resistance. Density‐functional theory calculations reveal that the existence of oxygen vacancies leads to the formation of new gap states in which the electrons previously associated with the Co‐O bonds tend to be delocalized, resulting in the much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:We synthesized the needle-like cobalt oxide/graphene composites with different mass ratios, which are composed of cobalt oxide (Co3O4 or CoO) needle homogeneously anchored on graphene nanosheets as the template, by a facile hydrothermal method. Without the graphene as the template, the cobalt precursor tends to group into urchin-like spheres formed by many fine needles. When used as electrode materials of aqueous supercapacitor, the composites of the needle-like Co3O4/graphene (the mass ratio of graphene oxide(GO) and Co(NO3)2·6H2O is 1:5) exhibit a high specific capacitance of 157.7 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) in 2 mol L(-1) KOH aqueous solution as well as good rate capability. Meanwhile, the capacitance retention keeps about 70% of the initial value after 4000 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1). The enhancement of excellent electrochemical performances may be attributed to the synergistic effect of graphene and cobalt oxide components in the unique multiscale structure of the composites.

Abstract:A well-organized composite of graphene nanosheets decorated with FeC 2 O 4 particles was synthesized through a simple chemical precipitation method. The FeC 2 O 4 nanoparticles obtained were 100-150 nm in size and homogeneously anchored on graphene sheets as spacers to keep the neighboring sheets separated. The FeC 2 O 4 -graphene exhbited excellent performances in absorption propties and supercapacitor make potential uses as environment and energy storage materials in future.

Abstract:MnO2 is an effective adsorbent for many metal ions and a promising electrode material for electrochemical supercapacitors. In this paper, we successfully combined the two functions through preparing a MnO2/carbon fiber (CF) composite as an electrosorptive electrode. The thin MnO2 film was deposited onto CF by an anodic eletrodeposition method. The MnO2/CF electrodes had ideal pseudocapacitive behavior and high capacitive reversibility. The specific capacitance of the MnO2/CF electrode reached a maximum value of 387 F/g, which is quite competitive compared with literature values. At 0.8 V applied potential, the maximum Cu(2+) adsorption capacity of the MnO2/CF electrode was 172.88 mg/g, which is more than 2 times higher than common MnO2 adsorbents without an electric field imposed. SEM images showed that MnO2 nanoflowers with several "petals" were uniformly distributed on the CF surface. Enhancement of adsorption by the polarization potential and the unique microstructure of the deposited MnO2 may be the source of the outstanding adsorption ability of the MnO2/CF electrode. The MnO2/CF electrode could be regenerated quickly by reversing the voltage. The deposition time of 1000 s was optimum for achieving maximum capacitance and Cu(2+) removal performance. The MnO2/CF composite electrosorptive electrode is a promising candidate for Cu(2+) removal from aqueous solution.
Copper porphyrin MOF/graphene oxide composite membrane with high efficiency electrocatalysis and structural stability for wastewater treatment

Abstract:In order to achieve effective separation and rapid degradation of toxic dyes, copper porphyrin/graphene oxide (Cu-TCPP/GO) composite membranes with structural stability were prepared. In this process, Cu-TCPP MOF was successfully synthesized by hydroxyl double salt active intermediates, which grow along the GO surface in different directions (the main direction is perpendicular to the GO base layer). The results showed that the CM3 composite membranes (GO-MOF: CNT = 2.5 : 1, wt%, PES substrate membrane) exhibited good membrane properties (permeation flux reached 26.24 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , with over 99 % rejection of Congo red) and excellent conductivity with R CM3 of 3.73 kΩ·sq −1 . Consequently, highly effective and rapid degradation of organic dyes was accomplished, e.g., 99.5 % of the Congo red was degraded in 10 min, and 94.8 % for methylene blue in 30 min, indicating a harmless treatment of dye wastewater. Furthermore, the composite membrane has maintained excellent stability and degradation ability in multiple cycle tests. The GO-MOF composite membrane provides a treatment method and design reference for clean water resources and environmental protection.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide/cuprous oxide (RGO/Cu2O) composite films were directly synthesized on the surface of copper foil substrates through a straight redox reaction between GO and Cu foil via a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the resultant composites with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) confirms the formation of Cu2O and reduction of GO, in which Cu2O nanoparticles were well covered by RGO. The resultant composites (referred to as RGO/Cu2O/Cu) were directly used as electrodes for supercapacitors, and their electrochemical performance was assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS) in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. A specific capacitance of 98.5 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) was obtained, which is much higher than that of pure Cu2O prepared under the same conditions, due to the presence of RGO. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Ultra-Fine Ruthenium Oxide Quantum Dots/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite as Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:This study synthesized ultra-fine nanometer-scaled ruthenium oxide (RuO2) quantum dots (QDs) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) surface by a facile and rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of RuO2 and rGO, RuO2/rGO nanocomposite electrodes showed ultra-high capacitive performance. The impact of different RuO2 loadings in RuO2/rGO nanocomposite on their electrochemical performance was investigated by various characterizations. The composite RG-2 with 38 wt.% RuO2 loadings exhibited a specific capacitance of 1120 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. In addition, it has an excellent capacity retention rate of 84 % from 1A g−1 to 10 A g−1, and excellent cycling stability of 89% retention after 10,000 cycles, indicating fast ion-involved redox reactions on the nanocomposite surfaces. These results illustrate that RuO2/rGO composites prepared by this facile process can be an ideal candidate electrode for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:With high conductivity, large surface area and a large number of interlayer structures, graphene has become an excellent choice for electrode materials in supercapacitors, but its mechanical strength and electrochemical performance need to be further improved. Herein, chitosan and polypyrrole were introduced into graphene oxide successively by a simple and low-cost method, and then the composite film was reduced by hydroiodic acid, leading to excellent mechanical and electrochemical properties. Structural characterizations verified the existence of covalent bond, it-it interaction and hydrogen bond, effectively improving the poor interface bonding between graphene sheets. The tensile strength and the microhardness of the composite film was increased by 182 % and 3000 % compared with original film. Electrochemical tests showed significantly improvement of the electrochemical activity, and the capacitance value could reach 170 F/g. This composite film with high strength and high electrochemical performance will become a promising candidate material in the field of flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by heavy metals is a severe environmental issue. In this work, a graphene oxide–starch composite (GO/WS) was facilely prepared via hydrothermal process. The as-prepared GO/WS was characterized and employed as adsorbent to remove Cu(II). The removal performance was evaluated, and the adsorption mechanism was analyzed. Result shows that GO/WS outperforms either single graphene oxide (GO) or water soluble starch (WS) in terms of adsorption capacity. Specifically, GO/WS (D = 500 mg L−1) adsorbs 542.01 mg g−1 of Cu(II) (C0 = 300 mg L−1) in 24 min, exhibiting some advantages as higher capacity and shorter equilibrium time over other similar adsorbents. Adsorption complies with the Freundlich model and PSO model and is controlled by surface reaction, exhibiting favorable and chemical feature. Moreover, adsorption is thermodynamically spontaneous and exothermic. The chemical bonding of C=O, C–O-related groups in both GO and starch with Cu(II) serves as the main adsorption mechanism. Owing to its high adsorption efficiency, GO/WS may be a promising adsorbent for heavy metal scavenging.

Abstract:Reduced graphene nanosheets/Fe2O3 nanorods (GNS/Fe2O3) composite has been fabricated by a hydrothermal route for supercapacitor electrode materials. The obtained GNS/Fe2O3 composite formed a uniform structure with the Fe2O3 nanorods grew on the graphene surface and/or filled between the graphene sheets. The electrochemical performances of the GNS/Fe2O3 hybrid supercapacitor were tested by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Comparing with the pure Fe2O3 electrode, GNS/Fe2O3 composite electrode exhibits an enhanced specific capacitance of 320 F g(-1) at 10 mA cm(-2) and an excellent cycle-ability with capacity retention of about 97% after 500 cycles. Abstract:The composite material composed of zinc sulfide, copper sulfide and porous carbon is prepared in this study, exhibiting excellent performances in the field of supercapacitor electrode and photocatalysts. In the degradation process of organic pollutants, zinc sulfide/ copper sulfide with heterostructure effectively reduce the recombination rate of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. And the porous carbon substrate can not only accelerate the separation of photo-carriers but also provide numerous active sites. Furthermore, the sample can be easily separated after decomposing the organic pollutants. As a supercapacitor electrode, the combination of zinc sulfide/copper sulfide with large pseudo-capacitance and porous carbon material with excellent double-layer capacitance results in superior electrochemical performances. The composite electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 1925 mF cm-2/ 0.53 mAh cm-2 at 4 mA cm-2. And the symmetric flexible supercapacitor based on the composite electrode achieves an outstanding energy density (0.39 Wh cm-2 at the power density of 4.32 W cm-2). Therefore, the zinc sulfide/ copper sulfide/porous carbonized cotton nanocomposites (pCZCS) prepared herein exhibit dual functions of photocatalysts with high efficiency as well as energy storage materials with high energy density, which is interesting and important for expanding the practical applications in cross fields.

Abstract:Supercapacitors stand out among some traditional energy storage devices due to their advantages such as long cycle stability, fast charge-discharge performance and high-power density. Therefore, it is necessary to explore high-performance electrode materials for application in supercapacitors. Manganese dioxide (MnO2) has high theoretical capacitance and high energy density, however, the deterioration of volume expansion and low conductivity directly affect its wide application. Graphene has attracted great interest owing to its invention. The combination of graphene and MnO2 can not only highlight the low resistance, large specific surface area and thermal stability of graphene, but also solve the shortcomings of MnO2 alone as an electrode material. The proposal of composite materials has also promoted the development and application of electrode materials in supercapacitors. Hence, this review aims to summarize the synthetic strategies and research progress of MnO2-graphene based multi-element composites, including the combination of MnO2-graphene with various carbon materials, transition metal oxides and conducting polymers, respectively. Finally, the possible development directions of MnO2-graphene based composite electrode materials in the future are also prospected.

Cu-Doped Porous Carbon Derived From Heavy Metal-Contaminated Sewage Sludge For High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode Materials

Abstract:In this paper, we report a complete solution for enhanced sludge treatment involving the removal of toxic metal (Cu(II)) from waste waters, subsequent pyrolytic conversion of these sludge to Cu-doped porous carbon, and their application in energy storage systems. The morphology, composition, and pore structure of the resultant Cu-doped porous carbon could be readily modulated by varying the flocculation capacity of Cu(II). The results demonstrated that it exhibited outstanding performance for supercapacitor electrode applications. The Cu(II) removal efficiency has been evaluated and compared to the possible energy benefits. The flocculant dosage up to 200 mgL(-1) was an equilibrium point existing between environmental impact and energy, at which more than 99% Cu(II) removal efficiency was achieved, while the resulting annealed product showed a high specific capacity (389.9Fg(-1) at 1Ag(-1)) and good cycling stability (4% loss after 2500 cycles) as an electrode material for supercapacitors.
Flocculant-Assisted Synthesis Of Graphene-Like Carbon Nanosheets For Oxygen Reduction Reaction And Supercapacitor

Abstract:The rational treatment of hazardous textile sludge is critical and challenging for the environment and a sustainable future. Here, a water-soluble chitosan derivative was synthesized and used as an effective flocculant in removal of reactive dye from aqueous solution. Employing these chitosan-containing textile sludges as precursors, graphene-like carbon nanosheets were synthesized through simple one-step carbonization with the use of Fe (III) salt as graphitization catalyst. It was found that the resultant graphene-like carbon nanosheets material at thickness near 3.2 nm (NSC-Fe-2) showed a high graphitization degree, high specific surface area, and excellent bifunctional electrochemical performance. As-prepared NSC-Fe-2 catalyst exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (onset potential 1.05 V) and a much better methanol tolerance than that of commercial Pt/C (onset potential 0.98 V) in an alkaline medium. Additionally, as electrode materials for supercapacitors, NSC-Fe-2 also displayed an outstanding specific capacitance of 195 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and superior cycling stability (loss of 3.4% after 2500 cycles). The good electrochemical properties of the as-prepared NSC-Fe materials could be attributed to the ultrathin graphene-like nanosheets structure and synergistic effects from codoping of iron and nitrogen. This work develops a simple but effective strategy for direct conversion of textile sewage sludge to value-added graphene-like carbon, which is considered as a promising alternative to fulfill the requirements of environment and energy.
Carbon Quantum Dots Anchoring MnO2/graphene Aerogel Exhibits Excellent Performance As Electrode Materials for Supercapacitor

Abstract:Manganese oxides/graphene composite material has become regarded as a highly promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. However, some shortages such as low bonding strength and poor stability are faced to solve. In this work, carbon quantum dots serve as the bridge for connecting MnO2 and graphene, which contribute to synthesize the stable MnO2/carbon quantum dots/graphene composite aerogel. Due to the connection function of CQDs the stable combinations are formed between MnO2 nanoparticles and graphene nanosheets. Subsequently, the composite aerogel as-fabricated has the three-dimensional net structure, indicating a large specific surface area and abundant electron transport pathways. The MnO2/CQDs/GA electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as compared to those of MnO2/GA and MnO2/G that are synthesized without the addition of CQDs. This composite electrode displays high specific capacitance of 721 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), good rate capability of 89.2% capacitance retention at 20 A g(-1) and remarkable cycle stability of 92.3% capacitance retention after 10,000 at 10 A g(-1). Abstract:Spent supercapacitor electrodes are considered waste after the end of the cycle. Designing a multifunctional material to increase the specific capacity of supercapacitors and eliminate environmental pollution is one of the existing challenges. In this study, Co 3 O 4 was extracted from waste CMB by several tandem hydrothermal methods. Also, 3-Aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) was used to exfoliate and surface modification of Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene nanosheets. Then, by assembling Co 3 O 4 on the synthesized Ti 3 C 2 Tx nanosheet, a sandwich composite of Co@Si/Ox-Ti 3 C 2 Tx was formed through the formation of a complex with active surface functional groups on the oxalic acid modified MXene surface. Co 3 O 4 can increase the number of redox reaction sites and fast charge transfer in the conducting channels of MXene by penetrating interlayers. The Co@Si/Ox-Ti 3 C 2 composite electrode showed an increased specific capacity of 1821 Cg −1 at a current density of 1 Ag −1 . The prepared hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) with Co@Si/Ox-Ti 3 C 2 composite as the positive electrode and silanized active nanocarbon (Si69@AC) with bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide as the negative electrode had a high energy density of 50 Wh kg −1 up to a power density of 8422 W kg −1 along with excellent cyclic life of 90.87% capacitance retention. After 15,000 cycles, XRD and XPS analyses confirmed 62% degradation of the positive electrode and conversion to TiO 2 after 30 days in water. To graft the separated and agglomerated elements, they were added to the TEOS solution and subjected to the sol-gel process. High photocatalytic properties, 97% degradation of methylene blue (MB), changing the absorption region from UV to visible due to changing its band gap to 3.3 eV were among the characteristics of the new material. This work is a new approach for the construction of eco-friendly new HSCs.
