Abstract:On basis of the redox reaction between MnO4− and Mn2+, a facile hydrothermal method combined with the adjustment of pH value in the reaction system has been employed to synthesize single-crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods, and square-like Mn3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, single-crystalline β-MnO2 and Mn2O3 nanorods can be obtained after subsequent calcinations of the as-prepared γ-MnOOH nanostructures at 300°C and 600°C, respectively. Furthermore, electrochemical property of as-obtained β-MnO2 is also studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the obtention of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, such as: nanospheres, nanorods, and urchin-like microspheres were synthesized by a surfactant-free hydrothermal method. The as-obtained powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy. XRD patterns indicate that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure without deleterious phases. The TEM images revealed that the pH values and precursors played a key role in the morphology-controlled synthesis of MnWO4 nanocrystals. This green method is an effective approach to the controlled growth of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, which are of interest for both theoretical investigations and practical applications. Finally, a possible growth mechanism for the formation of the MnWO4 microcrystals with different shapes was discussed in detail.

Abstract:A series of MnO2 unique nanostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. A novel nanostructure formation mechanism has been proposed, that MnO6 octahedral nuclei and molecular layers can be rearranged into different nanostructured morphologies by restacking and splitting, and then clasping, which is associated with tunnel structure phase transformation. Systematic macrostructure observations and magnetic property measurements have been conducted on these nanostructures, which demonstrate that engineering layered structures has the potential to create many unique nanostructures and unusual physicochemical behaviours.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism for the CTAB assisted hydrothermal synthesis of gamma-MnOOH nanorods has been preliminarily presented. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Single-crystal MnWO4 nanowires were successfully prepared for the first time via a simple hydrothermal method without any surfactants. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effect of pH value, precursor, and reaction temperature on the formation of MnWO4 nanocrystals was investigated. The precursor was found to be vital to the formation of MnWO4 nanowires. It is rational to expect that one-dimensional nanostructures of other tungstates may also be synthesized by this simple method.

Abstract:We reported the successful synthesis of novel Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons and MnOOH nanostructures via a facile hydrothermal method. Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons are with length of 350-400 nm and smooth surfaces. The sodium citrate (C6H5Na3O7) played a very important role in the formation of the nanostructures. A possible formation mechanism was proposed in detail. Furthermore, the Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons showed excellent ethanol gas-sensing properties. It is hoped that this study would help to further understand the synthesis and growth mechanism of other manganese oxide nanostructures. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:In this work, four well-defined morphologies, including nanorod, nanowire, nanoflower and nanowall, of MnO2 nanostructures with different crystal phases (alpha-, beta-, and delta-MnO2) have been synthesized employing a simple hydrothermal process. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) spectrometry. Our experimental results demonstrate that the concentration of KMnO4 plays a key role in forming different shapes and phases of MnO2 nanostructures. Specifically, the K+ concentration can affect the crystal phase of MnO2 seeds in the nucleation processes and the decomposition rate of MnO4- can influence the number of MnO2 nuclei at the initial nucleating stage and also can affect the subsequent crystal growth process. Moreover, the effects of reaction temperature on the morphology of the delta-MnO2 nanowall are systematically studied. The electrochemical performances of the as-prepared MnO2 as the positive material of rechargeable Li-ion batteries have also been researched. It is found that the alpha-MnO2 nanowall possesses largely enhanced electrochemical activity compared to alpha-MnO2 nanowires and beta-MnO2 nanorods. The vast difference in electrochemical activity is discussed in terms of the morphology, crystal phase and specific surface area of MnO2 nanostructures. It is highly expected that these findings are useful in understanding the formation of MnO2 nanocrystals with different morphologies, which are also applicable to other metal oxides nanocrystals.

Abstract:Manganese dioxides with various morphologies were prepared using a common hydrothermalmethod without any templates or additives. The evolution of the morphology was accompanied by the gradual conversion of the polymorphic forms from γ-type to β-type. Meanwhile, MnO2 microspheres, urchin-like nanostructures and nanowires were successfully synthesized. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The evolution process can be explained by the Ostwald Ripening mechanism.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:A lot of effort has been focused on the integration of nanorods/nanowire as building blocks into three-dimensional (3D) complex superstructures. But, the development of simple and effective methods for creating novel assemblies of self-supported patterns of hierarchical architectures to designed materials using a suitable chemical method is important to technology and remains an attractive, but elusive goal.RESULTS:The hierarchical structure of Mn3O4 with radiated spherulitic nanorods was prepared via a simple solution-based coordinated route in the presence of macrocycle polyamine, hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene (CT) with the assistance of thiourea as an additive.CONCLUSION:This approach opens a new and facile route for the morphogenesis of Mn3O4 material and it might be extended as a novel synthetic method for the synthesis of other inorganic semiconducting nanomaterials such as metal chalcogenide semiconductors with novel morphology and complex form, since it has been shown that thiourea can be used as an effective additive and the number of such water-soluble macrocyclic polyamines also makes it possible to provide various kinds of ligands for different metals in homogeneous water system.

Abstract:Single-crystalline Mn3O4 nanoframes and hollow octahedra were firstly prepared via a polyethylene glycol template-assisted route under hydrothermal conditions. The synthesized Mn3O4 nanoframes showed both square-shaped hollow interiors and the outward solid rims while their relative octahedra displayed hollow cores of about 75 nm. In addition, the formation mechanisms of Mn3O4 hollow nanostructures and the key roles of polyethylene glycol templates were discussed.

Abstract:Flowerlike manganese oxide microspheres and cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts were selectively synthesized by a simple decomposition of KMnO_4 under mild hydrothermal conditions without using template or cross-linking reagents. The effect of varying the hydrothermal times and temperatures on the nanostructure, morphology, compositional, and electrochemical properties of the obtained manganese oxides was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies showed that the flowerlike manganese oxide microspheres could be obtained at relatively low hydrothermal temperatures, while high hydrothermal temperatures were favorable for the formation of cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts. A morphology and crystalline evolution of the nanostructures was observed as the hydrothermal temperature was increased from 180 to 240 °C. On the basis of changing the temperatures and hydrothermal reaction times, the formation mechanism of cryptomelane-type manganese oxide nanobelts is discussed. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to evaluate the electrochemical properties of the obtained manganese oxide nanostructures, and the results show that the electrochemical properties depend on their shape and crystalline structure. This easily controllable, template-free, and environmentally friendly method has the potential for being used in syntheses of manganese oxide nanomaterials with uniform morphologies and crystal structures.

Abstract:β-MnO2 single crystals with novel tetragonous morphology have been hydrothermally prepared in an HCl solution at 180°C for 24h without using templates, catalysts, and organic reagents. The structure of the obtained β-MnO2 was systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, DSC–TGA analyses, and chemical compositional analyses. The morphology of β-MnO2 could be controlled by the hydrothermal treatment temperatures and the hydrothermal reaction times. β-MnO2 single crystals with diameters 200–600nm and lengths up to 1–5μm not only had novel tetragonous morphology, but also had high purity.

Abstract:A new and facile route was developed to manipulate the growth of hierarchically ordered Mn2O3 architectures via a solvothermal approach. Various solvents are employed to control the product morphologies and structures. Mn2O3 with unique cuboctahedral, truncated-octahedral, and octahedral shapes are obtained, and a possible formation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:In this work, three types of MnO2 nanostructures, viz., microsphere/nanosheet core-corona hierarchical architectures, one-dimensional (1D) nanorods, and nanotubes, have been synthesized employing a simple hydrothermal process. The formation mechanisms have been rationalized. The materials have been thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller spectrometry, field-emission scanning electron miscroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The microsphere/nanosheet core-corona hierarchical structures are found to be the layered birnessite-type MnO2, while ID nanorods and nanotubes are of the alpha-MnO2 phase. These MnO2 nanostructures are used as a model system for studying the shape/phase-dependent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction, which have be investigated by cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry. It is found that alpha-MnO2 nanorods/tubes possess largely enhanced electrocatalytic activity compared to birnessite-type MnO2 core-corona spheres despite the latter having a much higher specific surface area. The vast difference in electrocatalytic activity is discussed in terms of crystal structure, oxygen adsorption mode, and exposed crystal facets.

Abstract:A versatile synthetic method has been developed for the fabrication of Mn3O4 nanocrystals with different sizes and shapes, such as square nanoplates, mesocrystal nanodisks, and nanopolyhedra. Manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate and hydrazine monohydrate were the only two reactants used in aqueous solution, and no surfactant was employed. The key advantages of our approach are (1) the room-temperature synthesis, (2) the facile operation, (3) the flexibility in shape and size-control, and (4) the ease of scale-up. The exposed surfaces of the as-prepared nanoparticles were carefully characterized and indexed. The catalytic properties of the nanoplates for the degradation of methylene blue were evaluated in detail. The catalytic properties are closely related to the shape and size of the Mn3O4 nanocrystals, and nanoplates with a size of 50 nm exhibited the best catalytic performance. The magnetic properties were investigated with a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer.

Abstract:Single-crystalline alpha-MnO2 nanowires and beta-MnO2 microcrystals have been controllably synthesized by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reaction between MnO4- and Cr3+. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effects of various experimental conditions on the morphologies and crystalline structures of the final products were investigated. It was found that alpha-MnO2 nanowires were converted to beta-MnO2 microcrystals by prolonging the hydrothermal treatment under a dissolution-recrystallization process. Higher hydrothermal temperature and lower pH value were beneficial for the phase transformation from alpha-MnO2 to beta-MnO2.

Abstract:The assemblies of [M4O4] (M = metal) cubanes represent a fascinating class of materials in a variety of application fields. Although such a structural characteristic is relatively common in small molecules and in extended bulk solids, high nuclearity clusters composed of multiple [M4O4] units as their backbones are rare. In this work, we report two new Mn-oxo clusters, MnII8MnIII10O10(OOCMe)12(OMe)14(py)2 ([Mn18-Ac]) and MnII4MnIII14O14(OOCCMe3)8(OMe)14(MeOH)5(py) ([Mn18-Piv]), whose core structures are assemblies of either 6- or 7-cubanes in different packing patterns, which have been unambiguously revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The cubane-assembled structural features can be deemed as the embryonic structures of the bulk manganese oxide. Herein, this report demonstrates the first case study of utilizing Mn-oxo clusters as precursors for the preparation of manganese oxide nanocrystals, which has never been explored before. Through a simple colloidal synthetic approach, high-quality, monodisperse Mn3O4 nanocrystals can be readily prepared by employing both precursors, while their morphologies were found to be quite different. This work confirms that the structural similarity between precursors and nanomaterials is instrumental in affording more kinetically efficient pathways for materials formation, and the structure of the precursor has a significant impact on the morphology of final nanocrystal products.

Abstract:Single-crystalline α-MnO2 three-dimensional nanostructures were synthesized via a novel redox reaction of KMnO4 and Cr(NO3)3 under hydrothermal conditions. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The addition of HNO3 into the reaction has a significant effect on the morphologies of the final products. The α-MnO2 three-dimensional nanostructures were obtained under the acidic condition, while α-MnO2 nanowires were obtained without the addition of HNO3. A mechanism for the growth of α-MnO2 three-dimensional nanostructures was proposed.
