Abstract:Stable metallic 1T-WS2 nanoribbons with zigzag chain superlattices, highly stabilized by ammonia-ion intercalation, are produced using a facile bottom-up process. The atomic structure of the nanoribbons, including W-W reconstruction and W-S distorted octahedral coordination, results in distinctive electrical transport and optical Raman scattering properties that are very different from semiconducting 2H-WS2 . The correlations between structure and properties are further confirmed by theory calculations.

Abstract:First-principles calculations are used to establish that the electronic structure of graphene ribbons with zigzag edges is unstable with respect to magnetic polarization of the edge states. The magnetic interaction between edge states is found to be remarkably long ranged and intimately connected to the electronic structure of the ribbon. Various treatments of electronic exchange and correlation are used to examine the sensitivity of this result to details of the electron-electron interactions, and the qualitative features are found to be independent of the details of the approximation. The possibility of other stablization mechanisms, such as charge ordering and a Peierls distortion, are explicitly considered and found to be unfavorable for ribbons of reasonable width. These results have direct implications for the control of the spin-dependent conductance in graphitic nanoribbons using suitably modulated magnetic fields.

Abstract:First-principles calculations are used to predict the electronic properties and stability of ultranarrow single-layer SnS2 nanoribbons with zigzag- and armchair-terminated edges. We find that both kinds of SnS2 nanoribbons are nonmagnetic semiconductors with the band gap decreasing monotonically with the increasing ribbon width. The zigzag-edged SnS2 nanoribbons have narrower band gaps than those of the armchair-edged ones with similar widths. Based on the formation energy calculation, the wider SnS2 nanoribbons are more stable than narrower ones, and zigzag-edged SnS2 nanoribbons are more stable than armchair-edged ones.

Abstract:We present a first-principles study of the migration and recombination of edge defects (carbon adatom and/or vacancy) and their influence on electrical conductance in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that at room temperature, the adatom is quite mobile while the vacancy is almost immobile along the edge of ZGNRs. The recombination of an adatom-vacancy pair leads to a pentagon-heptagon ring defect structure having a lower energy than the perfect edge, implying that such an edge defect can be formed spontaneously. This edge defect can suppresses the conductance of ZGNRs drastically, which provides some useful hints for understanding the observed semiconducting behavior of the fabricated narrow GNRs.

Abstract:Structure, stability, electronic structure and magnetic property of MoS2 and WS2 nanoribbons are studied based on density functional theory. Formation enthalpies of nanoribbons with a series of widths are calculated and the formation enthalpy versus width curve of zigzag nanoribbon is lower than that of armchair nanoribbon. Edge energy (energy required to create one unit of edge length), which can be regarded as a 1D analog of surface energy (energy required to create one unit of surface area), is defined. For both MoS2 and WS2, zigzag edge energy is always smaller than armchair edge energy, indicating zigzag edge is more preferable than armchair edge. Band structure calculations show that all zigzag MoS2 and WS2 nanoribbons are magnetic and metallic, except for the narrowest monolayer MoS2 nanoribbon with a width of 0.36nm, which is a magnetic semiconductor. MoS2 and WS2 nanoribbons with armchair edge keep the semiconducting character of their 2D and 3D counterparts. The effect of nanoribbon width as well as layer thickness to the band gap characters is investigated.

Abstract:We investigated the energetic stability, electronic, and magnetic properties of the zigzag graphene nanoribbons with one edge saturated by two hydrogen atoms, the other edge saturated by one hydrogen atom by using density-functional theory (DFT). The energy of the ferromagnetic semiconductor state is the lowest state for these nanoribbons. The energy difference between the antiferromagnetic states and the ferromagnetic states varies inversely with the nanoribbon width. Both the band gaps and the magnetic moments in the zigzag graphene nanoribbons with one edge saturated are larger than those of zigzag graphene nanoribbons. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Electronic and magnetic properties of Li-intercalated bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) are studied by the spin density functional method. The configuration with antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling of the edge states between two nanoribbon layers is found most stable. The energy differences between the ferromagnetic states and AFM states increase as the width of the graphene nanoribbon increases. Further calculations show that Li-intercalated trilayer and tetralayer ZGNRs also favor the AFM coupling of the edge states. Such "superlattice" structure formed with spin magnetic edge states are potentially useful for spintronics applications.

Abstract:With advanced synthetic techniques, a wide variety of well-defined graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) can be produced with atomic precision. Hence, finding the relation between their structures and properties becomes important for the rational design of GNRs. In this work, we explore the complete chemical space of gulf-edged zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR-Gs), a subclass of zigzag GNRs in which the zigzag edges miss carbon atoms in a regular sequence. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of ZGNR-Gs depend on four structural parameters: ribbon width, gulf edge size, unit length, and gulf offset. Using tight-binding calculations and the Hubbard model, we find that all ZGNR-Gs are semiconductors with varying band gaps; there are no metals in this class of materials. Notably, when spin polarization is considered, most ZGNR-Gs exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior, with the spin moments and spin-induced band gap opening being stabilized by longer zigzag segments at the edges. Furthermore, we provide simple empirical rules that describe the Z2 topological invariant based on the aforementioned structural parameters. By analyzing the full chemical space of ZGNR-Gs, we offer insights into the design of GNRs with desired electronic, magnetic, and topological properties for nanoelectronic applications.

Half Metallicity along the Edge of Zigzag Boron Nitride Nanoribbons

Abstract:First-principles calculations within the local spin-density approximation reveal half metallicity in zigzag boron nitride nanoribbons (ZBNNRs). When the B edge, but not the N edge, of the ZBNNR is passivated, despite being a pure sp-electron system, the ribbon shows a giant spin splitting. The electrons at the Fermi level are 100% spin polarized with a half-metal gap of 0.38 eV and its conductivity is dominated by metallic single-spin states. The two states crossing at the Dirac point have different molecular origins, which signal a switch of carrier velocity. The ZBNNR should be a good potential candidate for wide gap spintronics.

Abstract:The energetic stability, electronic and magnetic properties of chiral graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with hydrogen-terminated edges are investigated using density functional theory. Our calculations show that the percentage of carbon atoms at the zigzag sites (P(z)) is the key factor determining the electronic and magnetic properties of chiral GNRs. Within the local spin density approximation, chiral GNRs with P(z) ≥ 50% have a semiconducting antiferromagnetic ground state. Otherwise, chiral GNRs are spin degenerate semiconductors. Thus, the critical chiral angle for the occurrence of spin polarization is determined to be 13.9°. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic state that is independent of the width of GNRs investigated, size effects occur for the ferromagnetic metastable state. These findings are helpful for the design of GNR-based spintronic devices.

Abstract:Quantum confinement and interference often generate exotic properties in nanostructures. One recent highlight is the experimental indication of a magnetic phase transition in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons at the critical ribbon width of about 7 nm [ Magda , G. Z. et al. Nature 2014 , 514 , 608 ]. Here we show theoretically that with further increase in the ribbon width, the magnetic correlation of the two edges can exhibit an intriguing oscillatory behavior between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, driven by acquiring the positive coherence between the two edges to lower the free energy. The oscillation effect is readily tunable in applied magnetic fields. These novel properties suggest new experimental manifestation of the edge magnetic orders in graphene nanoribbons and enhance the hopes of graphene-like spintronic nanodevices functioning at room temperature.

Abstract:The charge transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) under uniaxial and shear strains are theoretically studied. Although all strained ZGNRs have similar metallic band structures, they show four types of transport behavior under bias voltages that depend on the type of strain and the mirror symmetry of the ZGNR. Under an applied uniaxial strain, the current of symmetric ZGNRs is consistently small, while for asymmetric ZGNRs it is large. In contrast, the current increases with increasing shear strain for symmetric ZGNRs while it decreases for asymmetric ZGNRs. The current properties merge when the shear strain exceeds a critical value, and the two systems then show similar behavior. Our results suggest that strained ZGNRs with an appropriate applied shear are ideal conducting wires.

Abstract:The Effective Valence Bond (EVB) model is compared against DFT method in the study of magnetic polarization in edge-reconstructed zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR). Our studies lead to the discovery as well as understanding of the anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state transformation for ZGNRs on one-edge reconstruction from polyacene to polyazulene moieties, with a considerable stabilization of the ferromagnetic state due to the formation of a more stable in-body electronic structure. It is also found that long-range corrected DFT method is required to represent correctly such kind of electronic structure transformations.

Abstract:The electronic structure of zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) is studied using density functional theory. The mechanisms underlying the quantum-confinement effect and edge magnetism in ZGNR are systematically investigated by combining the simulated results and some useful analytic models. The quantum-confinement effect and the inter-edge superexchange interaction can be tuned by varying the ribbon width, and the spin polarization and direct exchange splitting of the edge states can be tuned by varying their electronic occupations. The two edges of ZGNR can be equally or unequally tuned by charge doping or Li adsorption, respectively. The Li adatom has a site-selective adsorption on ZGNR, and it is a nondestructive and memorable approach to effectively modify the edge states in ZGNR. These systematic understanding and effective tuning of ZGNR electronics presented in this work are helpful for further investigation and application of ZGNR and other magnetic graphene systems.

Abstract:We have performed first-principles calculations of graphene edge stresses, which display two interesting quantum manifestations absent from the classical interpretation: the armchair edge stress oscillates with a nanoribbon width, and the zigzag edge stress is noticeably reduced by spin polarization. Such quantum stress effects in turn manifest in mechanical edge twisting and warping instability, showing features not captured by empirical potentials or continuum theory. Edge adsorption of H and Stone-Wales reconstruction are shown to provide alternative mechanisms in relieving the edge compression and hence to stabilize the planar edge structure.
First-principles Study of Line-Defect-embedded Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons: Electronic and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations, we present the electronic and magnetic properties of a class of line defect-embedded zigzag graphene nanoribbons, with one edge saturated by two hydrogen atoms per carbon atom and the other edge terminated by only one hydrogen atom. Such edge-modified nanoribbons without line defects are found to be typical bipolar magnetic semiconductors (BMS). In contrast, when the line defect is introduced into the ribbons, the ground state is ferromagnetic, and the resulting nanoribbons can be tuned to spin-polarized metal, metal with Dirac point, or half-metal by varying the position of the line defect, owing to the defect-induced self-doping of the BMS. Specifically, when the line defect is far away from the edges of the ribbon, the system shows half-metallicity. We further confirm the structural and magnetic stability at room temperature by first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings reveal the possibility of building metal-free electronic/spintronic devices with magnetic/half-metallic graphene nanoribbons.
Enhanced Half-Metallicity in Edge-Oxidized Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons

Abstract:We present a novel comprehensive first-principles theoretical study of the electronic properties and relative stabilities of edge-oxidized zigzag graphene nanoribbons. The oxidation schemes considered include hydroxyl, carboxyl, ether, and ketone groups. Using screened exchange density functional theory, we show that these oxidized ribbons are more stable than hydrogen-terminated nanoribbons except for the case of the etheric groups. The stable oxidized configurations maintain a spin-polarized ground state with antiferromagnetic ordering localized at the edges, similar to the fully hydrogenated counterparts. More important, edge oxidation is found to lower the onset electric field required to induce half-metallic behavior and extend the overall field range at which the systems remain half-metallic. Once the half-metallic state is reached, further increase of the external electric field intensity produces a rapid decrease in the spin magnetization up to a point where the magnetization is quenched completely. Finally, we find that oxygen containing edge groups have a minor effect on the energy difference between the antiferromagnetic ground state and the above-lying ferromagnetic state.

Abstract:We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missing m-xylene units emerging during the cyclodehydrogenation step of the on-surface synthesis are the most common point defects. These "bite'' defects act as spin-1 paramagnetic centers, severely disrupt the conductance spectrum around the band extrema, and give rise to spin-polarized charge transport. We further show that the electronic conductance across graphene nanoribbons is more sensitive to "bite" defects forming at the zigzag edges than at the armchair ones. Our work establishes a comprehensive understanding of the low-energy electronic properties of disordered bottom-up graphene nanoribbons.

Abstract:Inspired by the fabrication of zigzag MoSe 2 nanoribbons and MoS 2 nanoribbons with well‐defined atomically precise edges, we study the stability, electronic structures, and magnetic properties of zigzag VS 2 nanoribbons (ZNRs) with different edge structures and widths. The calculated edge energies for all studied VS 2 nanoribbons are less than 0.9 eV/Å, lower than that of fabricated armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons, indicating the easy formation of ZNRs. The results show N‐ZNRs terminated with S and V atoms (N‐SV‐ZNRs) is a ferrimagnetic metal. The magnetic moments are mainly contributed by d orbitals of V atoms, and the V2 atom exhibits a spin that is antiparallel to the other V atoms due to the increase of through–space interaction. With hydrogen passivation, the magnetic moment of V2 atom in N‐SV‐ZNRs couples ferromagnetically with other V atoms and N‐SV‐ZNRs becomes half metallic. The N‐ZNRs terminated with V atom (N‐VV‐ZNRs) is found to be a magnetic metal, and the magnetic moments of V atoms around edges are very sensitive to ribbon width. Furthermore, N‐ZNRs with S atom terminations (N‐SS‐ZNRs) is a ferromagnetic quasi‐semiconductor. Only select bands intersect with the Fermi level near the Γ point, and the magnetic moments of all V atoms couple ferromagnetically. These findings are essential for applications of VS 2 nanoribbons–based low‐dimensional spintronic devices.
