Abstract:Catalytic oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling between unactivated C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H bonds is achieved by the cobalt-catalyzed o-alkylation reaction of aromatic carboxamides containing (pyridin-2-yl)isopropyl amine (PIP-NH2) as a N,N-bidentate directing group. Many different C(sp3)-H bonds in alkanes, toluene derivatives and even in the α-position of ethers and thioethers can be used as coupling partners. This method has a broad substrate scope and the tolerance of various functional groups.

Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:Sequential addition of CNXyl (Xyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) and CO to a tetrametallic magnesium hydride cluster results in stepwise reduction and cross-coupling of these substrates. Cross-coupling results in the formation of an ethene amidolate ligand [OC1(H1)=C2(H2)NAr]2– a previously unknown entity which contains a 1,2-difunctionalised carbon chain reminiscent of those found in aminoalcohols and aminoacids. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of such reactivity with metal hydride precursors. DFT calculations support a mechanism that parallels that established for coupling of CO to form ethenediolate ligands, with the key carbon–carbon bond step occurring by nucleophilic attack of a putative azamethylene intermediate on CO. The cluster plays a key role in templating the synthesis, providing kinetic control over each of the steps. The ethene amidolate ligand can be transferred to other metals (Al) and semi-metals (B) through onwards metathesis reactions.

Abstract:Enantioselective C(sp3)–C(sp3) coupling substantially impacts organic synthesis but remains challenging. Cobalt has played an important role in the development of homogeneous organometallic catalysis, but there are few examples of its use in asymmetric cross-coupling. Here we report a cobalt-catalysed enantioselective C(sp3)–C(sp3) coupling reaction, namely, alkene hydroalkylation, to access chiral fluoroalkanes. This reaction represents a catalyst-controlled enantioselective coupling mode in which a tailor-made auxiliary is unnecessary; via this reaction, an aliphatic C–F stereogenic centre can be introduced at the desired position in an alkyl chain.

Abstract:Cross-dehydrogenative couplings of two different C-H bonds have emerged as an attractive goal in organic synthesis. However, achieving regioselective C-H activation is a great challenge because C-H bonds are ubiquitous in organic compounds. Actually, the regioselective couplings promoted by enzymes are a common occurrence in nature. Herein, we have developed simple, efficient and general transition metal-free intramolecular couplings of alphatic and aromatic C-H bonds. The protocol uses readily available aryl triazene as the radical initiator, cheap K2S2O8 as the oxidant, and the couplings were performed well with excellent tolerance of functional groups. Interestingly, α-carbon configuration of some amino acid residues in the substrates was kept after the reactions, and the couplings for substrates with substituted phenylalanine residues exhibited complete β-carbon diastereoselectivity for induction of the chiral α-carbon. Therefore, the present study should provide a novel strategy for regioselective cross-dehydrogenative couplings of two different C-H bonds.

Abstract:Cobalt(II) halides in combination with phenoxy-imine (FI) ligands generated efficient precatalysts in situ for the C(sp2)-C(sp3) Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling between alkyl bromides and neopentylglycol (hetero)arylboronic esters. The protocol enabled efficient C-C bond formation with a host of nucleophiles and electrophiles (36 examples, 34-95%) with precatalyst loadings of 5 mol%. Studies with alkyl halide electrophiles that function as radical clocks support the intermediacy of alkyl radicals during the course of the catalytic reaction. The improved performance of the FI-cobalt catalyst was correlated with decreased lifetimes of cage-escaped radicals as compared to diamine-type ligands. Studies of the phenoxy(imine)-cobalt coordination chemistry validate the L,X interaction leading to the discovery of an optimal, well defined, air-stable mono-FI cobalt(II) precatalyst structure.

Abstract:Cobaltacycle synthesis via C-H activation has been achieved for the first time, providing key mechanistic insight into cobalt catalytic chemistry. N-Chloroamides are used as a directing synthon for cobalt-catalyzed room-temperature C-H activation and construction of heterocycles. Alkynes as coupling partners allow convenient access to isoquinolones, a class of synthetically and pharmaceutically important compounds. The broad substrate scope enables a diverse range of substitution patterns to be incorporated into the heterocyclic scaffold.

Abstract:Herein, we report the alkylation of alkenyl carbonates using alkyl Grignard reagents and iron catalysis to generate C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds and provide synthetically useful yields over a range of substrates. The transformation allows the alkylation of a wide range of substrates, including aromatic rings, alkanes, cycloalkanes, heterocycles. This reaction has introduced a new family of electrophiles to the iron‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions.

Abstract:We have developed cobalt-catalyzed, bidentate 2-(1-methylhydrazinyl)pyridine (MHP)-directed C(sp(2))-H alkylation/ annulation of benzoic hydrazides with various alkenes. Notably, diverse cyclopenta[c]isoquinolinones and dihydroisoquinolinones were obtained via this functional group-tolerant protocol. The reaction can be performed on a gram scale while maintaining an excellent yield, and the directing group can be removed efficiently under mild conditions. Furthermore, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations provide an incisive understanding of the observed regioselectivities for different olefins.

Abstract:Direct application of benzyl alcohols (or their magnesium salts) as electrophiles in various reactions with Grignard reagents has been developed via transition metal-catalyzed sp(3) C-O bond activation. Ni complex was found to be an efficient catalyst for the first direct cross coupling of benzyl alcohols with aryl/alkyl Grignard reagents, while Fe, Co, or Ni catalysts could promote the unprecedented conversion of benzyl alcohols to benzyl Grignard reagents in the presence of (n)hexylMgCl. These methods offer straightforward pathways to transform benzyl alcohols into a variety of functionalities.

Abstract:We describe a new application of 2-(1-methylhydrazinyl)pyridine as a bidentate directing group to directing cobalt-catalyzed C(sp(2))-H alkenylation/annulation of the corresponding benzoic hydrazides to form an isoquinoline backbone, via reacting with a terminal or internal alkyne followed by annulation. The reaction shows a broad substrate scope with the products obtained in good to excellent yields and high regioselectivity. Moreover, the directing group can be reductively removed in one step under mild conditions.
