Abstract:Microalga is a highly efficient biological approach for converting CO2 and nutrients to biomass. Scenedesmus quadricauda was selected as it has the advantages of high growth rate and digestibility for animal food. In this work, Scenedesmus quadricauda was cultured in digested wastewater to study the effects of simultaneous nutrient removal and CO2 fixation. The effects of initial concentration of Scenedesmus quadricauda, pH, CO2 concentration and digested wastewater concentration on Scenedesmus quadricauda growth were investigated. The removal of the total phosphorus and nitrogen in the digested wastewater by the algae was also considered. The results showed that the growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda was significantly affected by the CO2 concentration. Compared with the air, the algae cultivated with 1% (v/v) CO2 in air presented 60% increases of the growth rate. The removal of the total phosphorus and nitrogen in the digested wastewater was also observed. After 8 days' cultivation, the eliminating efficiency of the total phosphorus and nitrogen were more than 94%. The growth rate of Scenedesmus quadricauda was not obviously affected by the initial concentrations of Scenedesmus quadricauda and pH.
