Abstract:A novel ceramic nanofiber membrane (CNM), without an intermediate layer, was successfully developed onto the surface of a mullite fiber-based porous ceramic support using a sacrificial layer-assisted multiple dip-coating method. The CNM based on attapulgite exhibited a remarkable permeability of 1602.6L/(m2·h·bar), over 24 times higher than the ceramic nanofiber membrane with a support made from alumina granular particles. Moreover, a catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (Mn@CNM) was fabricated via an impregnation method. The Mn@CNM coupled catalytic ozonation process achieved a removal efficiency of up to 90.3% for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to evaluate the production of different reactive oxygen species during the catalytic ozonation of SMX. The superior performance of Mn@CNM was ascribed to the high porosity and specific surface area of the CNM support, as well as the presence of a separation layer composed of interwoven APT nanofibers. These components created nano-sized pore structures, that enhanced the nano-confinement effect and improved the interaction between ROS and SMX molecules. In addition, the excellent redox cycles of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) facilitated the generation of ROS and degradation of SMX in catalytic ozonation systems. This study presents a novel method for creating CNM with excellent permeability and Mn@CNM with superior catalytic performance, enabling efficient removal of emerging contaminants from water.

Abstract:A novel magnetically separable core/shell type nanocomposite was synthesized in a facile way and characterized by XRD, UV–Vis, FT-IR, TEM, nitrogen physisorption and magnetite susceptibility measurements. In the synthesis procedure, the mesoporous silica shell was coating on the surface of magnetic core directly via a nano-assembling method. After calcination at high temperature (550°C) for template removal, the spinel phase of maghemite core was retained without any transformation. The resulting material possessed a regularly hexagonal mesoporous structure with a high specific surface area (908.70m2/g), which were favorable to further functional modification. Once incorporated with iron species by in situ synthesis, the nanocomposite could serve as a Fenton catalyst and was effective in phenol degradation at the given conditions (40°C, pH=4). At the end of the reaction, it was easily collected by an external magnetic field and remained efficient in reuse.

Abstract:Synthetic procedures and application areas of a new composite material magnetic mesoporous silica were introduced. The material possesses advantages of both mesoporous silica materials and magnetic nanoparticles. The common synthetic methods of magnetic mesoporous silica including categories of one-step and two-step methods were introduced and compared in respect of mesoporous structure and magnetic separation performance. Two-step methods are relatively more complicated and time-consuming. The magnetic nanoparticles may clog the mesopores seriously. Comparatively, one-step methods are much easier and time-saving. The magnetic nanoparticles generate in-situ in side of silica walls which reduces clogging of mesopores to some extent. The magnetic mesoporous silica has great potential in areas of biocatalysis and controlled release of drugs.

The resulting Fe3O4@CSNT microspheres have a mean diameter of similar to 300 nm, high supermagnetic cores, and a hollow copper silicate nanotube shell, which endow them With useful magnetic responsivity, good dispersibility, and stable chemical properties. Moreover. the CSNT shell of the microspheres has strong surface affinity toward contaminations. The synthesized Fe3O4@CSNT was Successfully applied to convenient, efficient, and fast removal of microcystin-LR in water.

Abstract:A series of magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites have been synthesized through a simple nanocasting method using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as the template. Metal nitrates and natural soybean oil are respectively used as the magnetic particle precursors and carbon source, which can be infiltrated into the silica template after impregnation, grinding mix and heat treatment. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry and thermogravimetric analysis techniques are used to characterize the samples. It is observed that high content of magnetic FeNi alloy nanocrystals with the sizes of about 3–6nm are well homodispersed into the walls of graphitic mesoporous carbon matrix, and the resulting nanocomposites have a uniform mesostructure with a high specific surface area, large pore volume, and high saturation magnetization. Because of these characteristics, the obtained magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites can be used as efficient and recycled adsorbents in the removal of dye from wastewater.

Abstract:Magnetic mesoporous carbon composites were a type of nanomaterials which exhibit properties of both mesoporous carbon materials and magnetic materials.Magnetic mesoporous carbon composites have characteristics of high specific surface area,uniform pore size distribution and environment friendly,as well as good magnetic separation.In this paper,we briefly outline the common preparation methods of mesoporous carbon and magnetic nanoparticles,and then a comprehensive review is presented to introduce and compare the fabrication of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites.Their novel applications in biological medicine,catalysis and sewage treatment were also introduced.The future developments of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites have also been prospected.Meanwhile,the advantages and challenges of environmental friendly green synthetic route in the preparation of magnetic mesoporous carbon composites were discussed.
Template-Assisted Synthesis of Mesoporous Magnetic Nanocomposite Particles

Abstract:A new concept is proposed to synthesize mesoporous magnetic nanocomposite particles of great scientific and technological importance. Mesoporous silica coatings were created on micrometer-sized magnetite (Fe3O4) particles using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles as molecular templates. The characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, diffuse-reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta-potential measurements confirmed the deposition of mesoporous silica thin layers on the magnetite particles. The synthesized particles showed a drastic increase in specific surface area with an average pore size of 2.5 nm. The coating material showed a negligible effect on the saturation magnetization of the original particles that were fully protected by silica coatings. The synthesized mesoporous magnetic nanocomposite particles have a wide range, of applications in toxin removal, waste remediation, catalysis, reactive sorbents, and biological cell separations.
Adsorption of Methylene Blue by Halloysite/MnFe2O4 Nanocomposites

Abstract:Halloysite/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites have been proposed as a novel material which can be used in magnetic and electromagnetic applications. In this study, we fabricated two kinds of halloysite/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites. The XRD and TEM characterizations suggested that ferrite nanoparticles were mainly adhered on the outer surface of HNTs (named as WMH) and in the inner wall (MH), respectively. Both MH and WMH were applied to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that both MH and WMH can remove more than 97% MB at a dosage of 2 g L-1 and initial MB concentration of 20 mg L-1. The adsorption processes by both nanocomposites fit pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm with correlation coefficient of > 0.99. WMH (19.19 mg g(-1)) shows slightly higher maximum adsorption capacity than MH (18.52 mg g(-1)), contradicts to the fact that the mesopore volume of MH is 30% larger than that of WMH. It can be reconciled by the strong bonding between the outer surface ferrite nanoparticles of WMH and the MB molecules, which greatly enhanced the MB adsorption capacity. In addition, the dimethylamino groups of MB molecules were preferably removed, suggesting the MB degradation by the ferrite nanoparticles during adsorption. Furthermore, both WMH and MH can be easily magnetic separated and recycled. The MB removal efficiency can be maintained at after regenerated for 5 times. Ascribed to the advantages of easily recycling and regeneration, low cost, and MB degradation, the halloysite-MnFe2O4 nanocomposites are potential environmental friendly adsorbents for removing organic pollutants.

Abstract:MCs is a group of potent hepatotoxic peptides produced by cyanobacterial in eutrophic water, among which microcystin-LR is the most abundant and toxic. Long-time accumulation of even trace dosage from drinking water would cause significantly hepatic injury to animal and humans. Here we reported a novel Cu2+-modified mesoporous silica coated magnetic graphene composite (magG@mSiO(2)@-Cu2+) through mild sol-gel process and surface modification. Next, the composites were successfully applied for enrichment and separation of microcystin-LR followed by MALDI-TOF MS analysis based on the virtues of excellent hydrophilicity, high surface area (261 cm(2) g(-1)), sensitively magnetic separation property, accessible porosity (3.10 nm) and large amount of modified Cu2+ ions. Even performed in a lower concentration (0.5 mu g/L), at which microcystin-LR could not be detected directly, after treatment with the composites the S/N ratio could appear to be 82.93. Furthermore, the novel composites also exhibited high enrichment efficiency in real water sample. It provided a sensitive and efficient technique for enrichment and detection of microcystin-LR and developed a potent method for separation of pollutant in contaminated water. (c) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize magnetic nanoparticle and carbon nanotube (CNT) core-shell nanostructures, such as CoO/CNTs and Mn3O4/CNTs, by the nonaqueous solvothermal treatment of metal carbonyl on CNT templates using hexane as the solvent. The morphological and structural characterizations indicate that numerous cubic CoO or tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of the CNTs to form CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. It is revealed that the hydrophobic interaction between nanoparticles and CNTs in hexane plays the critical role for the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. A physical property measurement system (PPMS-9, Quantum Design) analysis indicates that the CoO/CNT core-shell nanostructures show weak ferromagnetic performance at 300 K due to the ferromagnetic Co clusters and the uncompensated surface spin states, while the Mn3O4/CNT core-shell nanostructures display ferromagnetic behavior at low temperature (34.5 K), which transforms into paramagnetic behavior with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Mesoporous magnetic Co-NPs(nanoparticles)/carbon nanocomposites were synthesized by carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microspheres entrapped with cobalt salt for the first time. The structure and morphology of the porous magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and N2 adsorption–desorption technique. The nanocomposites possess very high saturation magnetization (Ms is up to ∼133emu/g), near-zero remanence, and very low coercivity (Hc is down to ∼0.023KOe). Meanwhile, the nanocomposites have mesoporous structure with average pore size of 4nm and high specific surface area of 232m2/g, which can be tuned by changing the carbonization conditions. Using methyl orange (MO) as model pollutant in water, the mesoporous magnetic nanocomposites showed good adsorption capacity of 380mg/g, and the absorbed MO could be easily released in ethanol. The mesoporous nanocomposites were facile separated from solution under external magnetic force, and over 85% adsorption capacity for MO could be retained after five adsorption/desorption cycles.

Abstract:Magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs), consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), have enormous exploration and application potentials due to their superior physical and chemical properties, such as unique magnetism and high enrichment performance. This review concentrates on the rapid advances in the synthesis and application of magnetic carbon nanotubes. Great progress has been made in the preparation of MCNTs by developing methods including chemical vapor deposition, pyrolysis procedure, sol-gel process, template-based synthesis, filling process and hydrothermal/solvothermal method. Various applications of MCNTs as a mediator of the adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction, sensors, antibacterial agents, and imaging system contrast agents, and in drug delivery and catalysis are discussed. In order to overcome the drawbacks of MCNTs, such as sidewall damage, lack of convincing quantitative characterization methods, toxicity and environmental impact, and deficiency of extraction performance, researchers proposed some solutions in recent years. We systematically review the latest advances in MCNTs and discuss the direction of future development.

Abstract:Advanced magnetic carbon composites with high specific surface area and high microporosity are required for both environmentally and agriculturally related applications. However, more research is needed for the development of a facile and highly efficient synthesis process. In the present work, a novel approach of simultaneous activation and magnetization is proposed for the fabrication of magnetic carbon composites via the thermal pyrolysis of hydrochar (i.e., a solid residue from a hydrothermal carbonization process) that has been pretreated with mixtures of ferric chloride (FeCl3) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2). The main objective of this study is the investigation of the variation of characteristics of magnetic carbon composites produced at various conditions, as well as triclosan (TCS) adsorption behavior on such composites. This presented simple one-step synthesis method has the following advantages: (a) the hydrochar is activated with high surface area and pore volume (up to 1351 m(2)/g and 0.549 cm(3)/g, respectively), (b) activation and magnetization are simultaneously achieved without further modification, (c) the magnetic particles (γ-Fe2O3) are stable under an acidic medium (pH of 3.0 and 4.0), and (d) the products have the potential to remove TCS from aqueous solutions with a maximum adsorption capacity of 892.9 mg/g. The results indicate the effectiveness of this facile synthesis strategy in converting low-value biowaste into a functional material with high performance for pollutant removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The adsorption removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution using polymer nanocomposites has attracted great interest because of their advantages from both nanomaterials and polymers. In this work, a facile and novel method has been developed for surface modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) with carboxymethyl chitosan via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and Michael addition reaction. To obtain resultant CNT based chitosan nanocomposites (CNT-PDA-CS), pristine CNT were first coated with polydopamine (PDA) thin films through self polymerization of dopamine under alkaline aqueous solution. Then PDA modified CNT were further functionalized with carboxymethyl chitosan (CS) via Michael addition reaction. The successful preparation of CNT-PDA-CS nanocomposites was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. The utilization of the resultant CNT-PDA-CS for removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solution was also examined in this work. The results showed that CNT-PDA-CS exhibited obviously enhanced Cu2+ removal capability as compared with the unmodified CNT. Considered the versatility of mussel inspired chemistry, the method described in this work should be a general route for fabricating highly efficient adsorbents, which should be of great interest for environmental applications. Abstract:Superparamagnetic microspheres with an Fe3O4@SiO2 core and a perpendicularly aligned mesoporous SiO2 shell were synthesized through a surfactant-templating sol-gel approach. The microspheres possess high magnetization (53.3 emu/g), high surface area (365 m2/g), large pore volume (0.29 cm3/g), and uniform mesopore (2.3 nm). By using the unique core-shell microspheres with accessible large pores and excellent magnetic property, a fast removal of microcystins with high efficiency (>95%) can be achieved.

Abstract:Nanostructured Co3O4 materials attracted significant attention due to their exceptional electrochemical (pseudo-capacitive) properties. However, rigorous preparation conditions are needed to control the size (especially nanosize), morphology and size distribution of the products obtained by conventional methods. Herein, we describe a novel one step shape-controlled synthesis of uniform Co3O4 nanocubes with a size of 50 nm with the existence of mesoporous carbon nanorods (meso-CNRs). In this synthesis process, meso-CNRs not only act as a heat receiver to directly obtain Co3O4 eliminating the high-temperature post-calcination, but also control the morphology of the resulting Co3O4 to form nanocubes with uniform distribution. More strikingly, mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes are obtained by further thermal treatment. The structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A possible formation mechanism of mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes is proposed here. Electrochemical tests have revealed that the prepared mesoporous Co3O4 nanocubes demonstrate a remarkable performance in supercapacitor applications due to the porous structure, which endows fast ion and electron transfer.

Abstract:Magnetic iron/graphitic mesoporous carbon composites were prepared by a simple one-step solid–liquid grinding/templating route. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the samples. It was observed that a high content of magnetic iron nanoparticles could be embedded in the walls of graphitic mesoporous carbon matrix, and the resulting materials have a hierarchical mesostructure with a high specific surface area, large pore volume, and high saturation magnetization, giving the materials wide potential applications as catalyst supports and adsorbents.

Abstract:Magnetic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized in a process consisting of two steps: (a) covalent in situ polymerization and grafting of poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) on the surface of SWCNTs, followed by (b) thermal decomposition of ferric triacetylacetonateto produce magnetite nanoparticles on the PAA-grafted SWCNTs. It was demonstrated that magnetic nanoparticle-coated SWCNTs dispersed in water by sonication would respond to an external magnetic field. On such functionalization, the reorientation of SWCNTs in an epoxy matrix could be produced using a magnet. This endowed the composites with desirable magnetic and mechanical properties. POLYM.
