Abstract:Polyindole (Pind) is one of the conducting polymers (CPs) which previously was less studied but of recent is gaining attention for energy storage applications. In all the few previous reports, when Pind was employed as electrode active material in supercapacitors, the capacitance was reported low with reasonable values only being obtained as a composite with other materials. The reasons underlying the poor performance of Pind and Pind nanocomposites are thought to be: 1) inactive morphology and limited surface area, 2) poor conductivity, and 3) poor electrode fabrication techniques. To address the trio, we employed the traditional, easy and scalable electrospinning technique to fabricate high surface area electroactive Pind nanofibers. Further, a little percentage (10 wt.%) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to enhance the conductivity of Pind and to study the effect of our fabrication route on the nanocomposites. Significant capacitance improvements of up to 238 F g(-1) and 476 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1) for Pind and Pind/CNT freestanding electrospun electrodes, respectively were achieved. Moreover, we report the significant performance of the all-solid-state symmetric, flexible and binder-free supercapacitor fabricated by a one-step and scalable method of as-electrospun Pind/CNT nanofibers on the stainless steel fabric current collector. The supercapacitor showed a high energy density of 17.14 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 426 W kg(-1) and capacitance retention of 95% after 2000 cycles. We strongly believe that we have set a stage for Pind to compete in a healthy race with other CPs as a next generation electrode material for supercapacitors. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:We report three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoporous Au/polyaniline (PANI) composite films made by one-step electrochemical polymerization of PANI shell onto dealloyed nanoporous gold (NPG) skeletons for the applications in electrochemical supercapacitors. The NPG/PANI based supercapacitors exhibit ultrahigh volumetric capacitance (∼1500 F cm-3) and energy density (∼0.078 Wh cm-3), which are seven and four orders of magnitude higher than these of electrolytic capacitors, with the same power density up to ∼190 W cm-3. The outstanding capacitive performances result from a novel nanoarchitecture in which pseudocapacitive PANI shells are incorporated into pore channels of highly conductive NPG, making them promising candidates as electrode materials in supercapacitor devices combing high-energy storage densities with high-power delivery. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. TiO2-C Nanowire Arrays@polyaniline Core-Shell Nanostructures on Carbon Cloth for High Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:TiO2-C@polyaniline (PANI) are synthesized on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) as flexible electrode, in which TiO2-C nanowire arrays (NWAs) work as supporting frame to enhance the mechanical stability of composites, while PANI is coated on TTiO2-C NWAs to make a core-shell structure and form a continuous conducive 3D network between isolated TiO2-C nanowires. By virtue of such unique structure design, the as-prepared TiO2-C@ PANI composites achieve desirable cycling performance while possess high specific capacitance. Concretely, this TiO2-C@PANI composite shows remarkable specific capacitance of 1818 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) good rate capability with 75.5% capacitance retention at 10 A g(-1), and excellent cycling performance with 80% capacity retention over 5000 cycles at a charge-discharge current of 10 A g(-1). Besides, the prefabricated TiO2-C@PANI//AC asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor also exhibits a high energy density of 32.4 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 850.0 W kg(-1). In sum, such TiO2-C@PANI CC electrode material has a bright future in the application of supercapacitors and provides a new strategy for other conducive polymer-based electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Semiconducting carbon nanotubes (s-CNTs) have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional silicon for ultrascaled field-effect transistors (FETs), owing to their exceptional properties. Aligned s-CNTs (A-CNTs) are particularly favored for practical applications due to their ability to provide higher driving current and lower contact resistance compared with individual s-CNTs or random networks. Achieving high-semiconducting-purity A-CNTs typically involves conjugated polymer wrapping for selective separation of s-CNTs, followed by self-assembly techniques. However, the presence of the polymer wrapper on A-CNTs can adversely impact electrical contact, gating efficiency, carrier transport, and device-to-device variations, necessitating its complete removal. While various methods have been explored for polymer removal, accurately characterizing the extent of removal remains a challenge. Traditional techniques such as absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may not accurately depict the remaining polymer content on A-CNTs due to their inherent detection limits. Consequently, the performance of FETs based on pure polymer-wrapper-free A-CNTs is unclear. In this study, we present an approach for preparing high-semiconducting-purity and polymer-wrapper-free A-CNTs using poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-dinitrilomethine)-(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-dimethine)] (PFO-N-PFO), a degradable polymer, in conjunction with a modified dimension-limited self-alignment process (m-DLSA). Comprehensive transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations, complemented by absorption and XPS characterizations, provide robust evidence of the successful near-complete removal of the polymer wrapper via a cleaning procedure involving acidic degradation, hot solvent rinsing, and vacuum annealing. Furthermore, top-gated FETs based on these high-semiconducting-purity and polymer-wrapper-free A-CNTs exhibit good performance metrics, including an on-current (Ion) of 2.2 mA/μm, peak transconductance (gm) of 1.1 mS/μm, low contact resistance (Rc) of 191 Ω·μm, and negligible hysteresis, representing a significant advancement in the CNT-based FET technology.
Hierarchical Polyaniline Core-Shell Nanocomposites Coated on Modified Graphite for Improved Electrical Conductivity Performance

Abstract:Graphite has recently gained scientific and industrial attention due to its high electrical conductivity. In the current endeavor, a new way to fabricate novel and multifunctional nanocomposites using functional graphite (FG) as filler is presented. The fabrication of multilayered conducting composites of PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG was carried out via in situ polymerization, using polyaniline (PANi), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and block copolymer as matrices in the presence of FGfiller. The growth of PANi chains is manifested by PMMA due to the formation of H-bonding between imine and carbonyl groups of PANi and MMA units, respectively, and are responsible for ion exchange sites. FTIR spectroscopy was used for structural elucidation of composites while elemental analysis was accomplished by XPS and EDX spectroscopy. The morphology of the prepared PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG@FG composites was inspected by the SEM. The structure and crystallinity of the composites was investigated via XRD. The improved thermal stability and properties of the nanocomposites were observed using TGA and DSC. The conductivity measurements were used to characterize the electrical conductivity performance of the resulting composites. The presence of functional filler as well as polyaniline shows a significant contribution towards the enhancement of electrical conductivity of PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG@FG nanocomposites.
Polyaniline/Pt hybrid nanofibers: high-efficiency nanoelectrocatalysts for electrochemical devices.

Abstract:A simple and facile procedure to synthesize a novel hybrid nanoelectrocatalyst based on polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber-supported supra-high density Pt nanoparticles (NPs) or Pt/Pd hybrid NPs without prior PANI nanofiber functionalization at room temperature is demonstrated. This represents a new type of ID hybrid nanoelectrocatalyst with several important benefits. First, the procedure is very simple and can be performed at room temperature using commercially available reagents without the need for templates and surfactants. Second, ultra-high density small "bare" Pt NPs or Pt/Pd hybrid NPs are grown directly onto the surface of the PANI nanofiber, without using any additional linker. Most importantly, the present PANI nanofiber-supported supra-high density Pt NPs or Pt/Pd hybrid NPs can be used as a signal enhancement element for constructing electrochemical devices with high performance.
Enhanced Electrochemical Performances by Strongly Anchoring Highly Crystalline Polyaniline on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube.

Abstract:The multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) surface was strongly anchored by highly crystalline polyaniline (PANI), slowly grown from a controlled isothermal crystallization method under π-π interactions. The crystalline PANI particles are approximately 10-38 nm thick and the space between them varies from near zero to 55 nm as reaction conditions vary. The highly crystalline nanohybrid (CNH) showed electrochemical performance enhancement compared with neat MWNT, PANI and the referenced hybrid synthesized from chemical polymerization. The specific capacitance (SC) of CNHs can be 726 F g-1 coupled with an excellent rate capability. Moreover, the strong combination between PANI and MWNT as well as the crystalline structures in PANI improved the bulk conductivity, the interfacial charge transportation and the cycling stability of CNHs. The SC value of CNHs can keep almost unchanged upon 1000 charge-discharge cycles, followed by just slight decline of 2.6% after 10000 cycle tests. XRD data shows the SC decline was mainly resulted from the structural variation of crystalline PANI. Besides, the resulting CNHs showed significant electrocatalytic behaviours towards H2O2 and exhibits a low detection limit of 4.4 μM due to the enhanced electron transportation between MWNT and PANI. The reported method opens a gateway to design high-performance MWNT/PANI hybrids used in electrochemical sensor, fuel cells and energy-storage related devices.

Abstract:Nanofibers and mat-like polyacrylonitrile-polyphenyl/titanium oxide (PAN-Pph./TiO 2 ) with proper electrochemical properties were fabricated via a single-step electrospinning technique for supercapacitor application. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), thermogravimetry (TGA), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were conducted to characterize the morphological and chemical composition of all fabricated nanofibers. Furthermore, the electrochemical activity of the fabricated nanofibers for energy storage applications (supercapacitor) was probed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), charge–discharge (CD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The PAN-PPh./TiO 2 nanofiber electrode revealed a proper specific capacitance of 484 F g −1 at a current density of 11.0 A g –1 compared with PAN (198 F g −1 ), and PAN-PPh. (352 F g −1 ) nanofibers using the charge–discharge technique. Furthermore, the PAN-PPh./TiO 2 nanofiber electrode displayed a proper energy density of 16.8 Wh kg −1 at a power density (P) of 2749.1 Wkg −1 . Moreover, the PAN-PPh./TiO 2 nanofiber electrode has a low electrical resistance of 23.72 Ω, and outstanding cycling stability of 79.38% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles.

Abstract:This work aimed to produce poly(acrylonitrile-co-itaconic acid) (P(AN-co-IA)) nanocomposites with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(3-methoxythiophene) (PMOT). An anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate was used in emulsion polymerization for nanocomposite production. Incorporations of PEDOT and PMOT on the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and ultra-violet spectroscopy. These nanoparticles were blended with PAN and the blends were electrospun to produce P(AN-co-IA)–polythiophene-derivative-based nanofibres, and the obtained nanofibres were characterized by SEM and energy dispersive spectroscopy. In addition, electrochemical impedance studies conducted on nanofibres showed that PEDOT and PMOT in matrix polymer P(AN-co-IA) exhibited capacitive behaviour comparable to that of ITO–PET. Their capacitive behaviour changed with the amount of electroactive polymer.

Abstract:The functionalization of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) has attracted much attention in recent years due to the nano-tubular structure and particular features. Here, we report a conductive nanohybrids of HNTs, polyaniline (PANI), and poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with high electrical conductivity (0.11 S/cm) prepared by in situ polymerization and layer-by-layer assembly. The chemical structures and morphologies were characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis, FE-SEM, and TEM, which confirmed that the layers of PANI, PSS, and PANI were sequentially coated onto the HNTs as expected. A study of cyclic voltammetry suggested the typical pseudocapacitance and good rate performance of the as-prepared nanocomposites. The results of galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further demonstrated its favorable capacitive behavior and low resistance. The easily fabricated halloysite/polyaniline nanocomposites show great potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Preparation and properties of PANI/PI composite fabrics with conductive nanofiber network structure

Abstract:Electrically conductive polyaniline (PANI)/polyimide (PI) composite fabric was prepared by in situ polymerized aniline on PI fabric in the acid solution using ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. PANI nanoflowers and nanofibers was obtained on the surface of PI fabric by controlling the molar ratio of aniline/oxidant and the acidity of the polymerization solution. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) results demonstrated that a continuous PANI nanofiber network with an average fiber diameter of 80–100 nm was successfully constructed on PI fabric when the doping acid was HNO3, the aniline to oxidant molar ratio was 4:5, and the pH value was 2.32. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the PANI nanofibers was combined on PI fabric through hydrogen bonding. The conductivity of the composite fabric was 0.53 S/m, the contact angle of the composite fabric was increased from 50.6° to 84.7° due to the uniform nanofiber network structure, and the decomposition temperature (Td) of the composite fabrics was beyond 580.0 °C. Remarkably, the prepared PANI/PI composite fabric exhibited excellent electromagnetic wave absorption features (reflection loss of −57.99 dB), which implied it could be a good candidate for the electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Abstract:Conductive nanofibers are adopted to enhance the electric properties of ferroelectric polymers. Polyaniline (PAN[) nanofibers doped by protonic acids have a high dispersion stability in vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymers [P(VDF-TrFE)] and lead to percolative nanocomposites with enhanced electric responses. About a 50-fold rise in the dielectric constant of the ferroelectric polymer matrix has been achieved. Percolation thresholds of the nanocomposites are relevant to doping levels of PAN I nanofibers and can be as low as 2.9 wt% for fully doped nanofibers. The interface between the conductive nanofiber and the polymer matrix plays a crucial role in the dielectric enhancement of the nanocomposites in the vicinity of the percolation threshold. Compared with other dopants, perfluorosulfonic acid resin is better at improving the performance of the nanofibers in that it serves as a surface passivation layer for the conductive fillers and suppresses leakage current at low frequency. The nanofibers drastically reduce the electric field strength required to switch spontaneous polarization of P(VDF-TrFE). The nanocomposites can be utilized for potential applications as high energy density capacitors, thin-film transistors, and non-volatile ferroelectric memories.
Electrically Conductive Polyaniline/Polyimide Nanofiber Membranes Prepared via a Combination of Electrospinning and Subsequent In situ Polymerization Growth

Abstract:Highly aligned polyimide (PI) nanofiber membranes have been prepared by electrospinning equipped with a high speed rotating collector. As the electrospun polyimide nanofiber membranes possess large surface area, they can be used as the template for in situ growth of polyaniline (PANi) by using FeCl₃ as the oxidant. It is found that PANi nanoparticles can be uniformly distributed on the surface of highly aligned PI nanofibers due to the low oxidization/reduction potential of FeCl₃ and the active nucleation sites of the functionalized PI nanofibers. The as-prepared PANi/PI composite membranes not only possess excellent thermal and mechanical properties but also show good electrical conductivity, pH sensitivity and significantly improved electromagnetic impedance properties. This is a facile method for fabricating high-performance and multifunctional composites that can find potential applications in electrical and aerospace fields.

Flexible PANI/SWCNT Thermoelectric Films with Ultrahigh Electrical Conductivity.

Abstract:The effects of polyaniline (PANI) with different polymerization times on the film-forming and thermoelectric properties as well as on the performance of SWCNTs/PANI composites were systematically investigated in this study. It was found that the film-forming and flexibility of PANI films improved with the increase in polymerization time. We showed that a super high conductivity of ∼4000 S cm-1 can be achieved for the SWCNTs/PANI composite film, which is the highest value for the SWCNTs/PANI system at present. Both the electrical conductivity and power factor increase by an order of magnitude than that of pure PANI films and far exceed the theoretical value of the mixture model. These results suggest that the sufficiently continuous and ordered regions on the interlayer between the filler and matrix are key to improve the electrical conductivity of composites. Finally, the maximum PF reaches 100 μW m-1 K-2 at 410 K for the 0.6CNT/PANI5h. Furthermore, it is found that the composite films have excellent environmental and structural stability. Our results can deepen the understanding of organic-inorganic thermoelectric composite systems and facilitate the practical application of flexible and wearable thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:A composite conductive polymer film, polyaniline-coated polytetrafluoroethylene, noted as PANI/PTFE, has been successfully synthesized by a simple chemical oxidation polymerization approach. The observed surface morphology of the PANI/PTFE film confirms that the network structural PTFE film acted as template in the synthesis of the composite film to get PANI@PTFE coaxial-line structure at a relative low oxidant concentration. By regulating the molar ratio of oxidant to monomer, the morphological evolution of the composite film could be controlled, resulting in the tunable hydrophilicity. As a consequence of an optimal combination of the characteristic features of PANI and PTFE, a composite film with excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, easy processability, adjustable hydrophilicity and reversible conversion between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity have been obtained.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH)/PANI composites are fabricated via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The crystallinity, chemical structure and morphology of the composites are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Based on the different morphology, the formation mechanism of the composites is proposed and the influence of the morphology on the electrochemical performance is predicted. The electrochemical properties of the composites are evaluated by galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite electrode shows higher specific capacitance than that of the MWCNT/PANI composite, as can be ascribed to the interpenetrating network structure of the MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite and the co-doping of DBSA and MWCNT-COOH. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite with 15% MWCNT-COOH presents the best electrochemical performance owing to the synergistic and comprehensive effect of the components. Using functionalized MWCNT provides an efficient approach to prepare high-performance composite materials for electrical energy storage fields.

Abstract:ABSTRACTPorous hollow carbon nanofibers (PHCNFs) using styrene‐acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) solution as core and polyacrylic acid (PAA) as shell were manufactured by co‐axial electrospinning technique, taking polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a pore inducer additive in the shell. The shell thickness of PHCNFs could be adjusted by controlling flow rates of core and shell fluids. The prepared PHCNFs showed excellent electrochemical properties with the high specific capacitance of 221 F g−1 and superior cycling stability, remaining a capacitance retention of 95% after 5000 cycles under a scan rate of 0.1 V s−1. In this system, hollow structures bring a 20% capacitance improvement, while the porous morphology brings a 47% capacitance improvement. The attractive performances exhibited by these sponge supercapacitors make them potentially promising candidates for future energy storage systems. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
