Abstract:There is usually phase difference between the current and back electromotive force (EMF) in the control of single-phase brushless direct current (SPBLDC) motor, which probably produces invalid tail current and negative torque. Invalid tail current and negative torque dramatically decrease the efficiency of motor and increase the torque ripple, vibration, and acoustic noises. This paper analyzes a new kind of SPBLDC motor with sinusoidal back EMF. By analyzing it is found that the phase and width of input voltage are the main factors causing invalid tail current. In order to reduce the invalid tail current, it is proposed and verified that the current change rate should be less than zero when the electrical angle is near π. Comparing different square wave voltage control strategies, the phase advance with commutation pulse control technique has lower torque ripple, relatively high output torque, and wider control margin. The calculation formulas of optimal phase advance angle and duty angle (also called dwell angle in some papers) are deduced in the paper. An eight-pole SPBLDC fan motor with rated speed of 125000 rpm is used in the experiment. And experiments verify the correctness of analysis. In addition, the methods of control and analysis in the paper is also applicable to other SPBLDC motors.
