Abstract:The experiments on the start-up of membrane bioreactors (MBR) inoculated with Pseudomonas putida were conducted for toluene removal in the present study. A composite membrane consisting of a porous polyamide (PA) support layer coated with a very thin dense polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) top layer was used. The dry weight, OD (D 600nm) of circulation liquid, pressure drop and removal efficiency in MBR were investigated .The results revealed that the start-up progress of MBR consisted of three phases: Biofilm formation period (0∼5 d), development period (6∼10 d), and stabilization period (11∼14 d). The D 600nm of circulation liquid, pressure drop of liquid in MBR, removal efficiency of toluene and dry weight increased rapidly in the biofilm formation period, then the D 600nm decreased while other parameters rose continuously in the development period, and they kept relative stability in the stabilization period of biofilm growth, finally D 600nm, pressure drop of liquid, removal efficiency of toluene and dry weight of the biofilm reached 0.75, 180 Pa, 78%, 2.25 mg/cm 2, respectively. It was suggested that the synthetical analysis of the above parameters could be a guideline for practical biofilm formation of MBR.
