Abstract:In view of current economical and environmental problems in recent years, integral utilization of sugarcane bagasse, an energy crop residue, has been a high priority for the diversification of the sugarcane industry. In this paper, the fungal biomass and laccase production in pretreatment spent liquor of bagasse using three strains of white rot fungi, Panus conchatus, Flammulina velutipes and Psathyrella candollean, was investigated. The performance of three pretreatment methods, a mixture of 5% NaHSO3 and 0.2 % H2SO4 (A), 5 % NaHSO3 (B) and 0.2% H2SO4 (C), was compared for fermentation at 160 degrees C for 15 min with a 1:8 solid-to-liquor ratio. The majority of the monosaccharide in spent liquor from the pretreatment methods A, B and C was xylose, with the concentrations of 11.3, 3.7 and 10.6 g/L, respectively:The biomass of all the three strains of white rot fungi increased during fermentation in the three kinds of liquid medium based on the spent liquor of bagasse without detoxification, but only Flammulina velutipes showed excellent enzyme production with the maximal laccase activity of about 200, 180 and 130 U/L in the medium, respectively. It should be noted that our results demonstrated the potential for laccase production from pretreatment spent liquor of bagasse by white rot fungi.
