Abstract:In stimulated Raman scattering, two incident optical waves induce a force oscillating at the difference of the two light frequencies. This process has enabled important applications such as the excitation and coherent control of phonons and magnons by femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the so far neglected up-conversion counterpart of this process: THz sum-frequency excitation of a Raman-active phonon mode, which is tantamount to two-photon absorption by an optical transition between two adjacent vibrational levels. Coherent control of an optical lattice vibration of diamond is achieved by an intense terahertz pulse whose spectrum is centered at half the phonon frequency of 40 THz. Remarkably, the carrier-envelope phase of the driving pulse is directly imprinted on the lattice vibration. New prospects in infrared spectroscopy, light storage schemes and lattice trajectory control in the electronic ground state emerge.

Abstract:Coherent terahertz (THz) emission from the vacuum-plasma interface induced through laser wake-field excitation has been investigated by particle-in-cell simulations. The emission frequency appears around tau(-1)(L), where tau(L) is the laser pulse duration, even though the plasma density is distributed inhomogeneously near the interface. The emission amplitude, which is zero on the propagation axis of the incident pulse, increases transversely until reaching the maximum amplitude at the beam edge of the incident pulse and then decays transversely. The emission power scales like P approximately 10(8) x a(4)(0) W, where a(0) is the normalized field amplitude of the laser pulse. For an incident pulse of a few tens of femtoseconds at the forced intensity of 3 x 10(17) W/cm(2), it can generate THz radiation with a power of a few MW and with an energy of several microJ/pulse.
Powerful Terahertz Emission from Laser Wakefields in Inhomogeneous Magnetized Plasmas

Abstract:Powerful coherent terahertz (THz) pulses with a broad spectrum (0.1-3 THz) can be produced from a laser-driven wakefield through linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas with the maximum plasma density of 10(17) cm(-3). This occurs when a laser pulse, with an optimized duration about 300 fs, is incident either normally or obliquely to the density gradient of inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas. The external dc magnetic field has a magnitude of a few tesla. By changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field, one can enhance or suppress the THz emission. The maximum energy conversion efficiency in the magnetized plasmas can be double that in the unmagnetized plasmas. Such wakefield emission can be a powerful THz source at the MW level and capable of affording field strength of a few MV/cm, suitable for THz nonlinear physics. Because these THz emissions are always with a positive chirp, with a proper dispersion compression, single-cycle THz pulses can be generated with higher peak powers and field strengths.

Abstract:Plasma as a nonlinear optical medium has the potential to produce extremely powerful terahertz (THz) emission when irradiated by ultrashort high-intensity laser pulses. Different schemes to produce THz emission associated with laser wakefield excitation will be discussed, which include THz emission from inhomogeneous plasma via linear mode conversion, emission from magnetized plasma, as well as from a plasma channel and a homogeneous plasma slab. Potential applications include diagnostic of laser wakefields, particle acceleration, and nonlinear THz spectroscopy, etc.

Abstract:Mechanism of terahertz （THz） pulse generation in gases irradiated by ultrashort laser pulses is investigated theoretically. Quasi-static transverse currents produced by laser field ionization of gases and the longitudinal modulation in formed plasmas are responsible for the THz emission at the electron plasma frequency, as demonstrated by particle-in-cell simulations including field ionization. The THz field amplitude scaling with the laser amplitude within a large range is also discussed.

Abstract:With one- and two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, we simulate the generation of high power terahertz (THz) emission from the interaction of ultrashort intense lasers with tenuous plasma and gas targets. By driving high-amplitude electron plasma waves either with a laser wakefield or the beatwave of two laser pulses, powerful THz electromagnetic pulses can be produced by linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous plasma or by the transient current induced at the surfaces of a thin plasma layer of few plasma wavelengths. Even with incident lasers at moderate intensity such as 10(17)W/cm(2), the produced emission can be at the level of tens of MW in power and capable of affording field strengths of a few MV/cm, suitable for the studies of THz nonlinear physics. With field ionization included in the PIC codes, THz emission from laser interaction with tenuous gas targets is simulated. It is found that the transient transverse current formed during the ionization processes is responsible for the THz emission. With this mechanism, one may also obtain THz fields of MV/cm at lower laser intensity as compared with the schemes of plasma-wave excitation.

Abstract:Generation of intense coherent THz radiation by obliquely incidenting an intense laser pulse on a wire target is studied using particle-in-cell simulation. The laser-accelerated fast electrons are confined and guided along the surface of the wire, which then acts like a current-carrying line antenna and under appropriate conditions can emit electromagnetic radiation in the THz regime. For a driving laser intensity ∼3×10^{18}W/cm^{2} and pulse duration ∼10 fs, a transient current above 10 KA is produced on the wire surface. The emission-cone angle of the resulting ∼0.15 mJ (∼58 GV/m peak electric field) THz radiation is ∼30^{∘}. The conversion efficiency of laser-to-THz energy is ∼0.75%. A simple analytical model that well reproduces the simulated result is presented.

Abstract:Coherent terahertz (THz) radiation sources based on a storage ring hold a significant future for generating high average power terahertz radiation, as the electron beam possesses a high revolution frequency. We propose a novel scheme to generate a high repetition rate coherent THz radiation leveraging the energy modulation self-amplification technology. In this scheme, utilizing the interaction of external intensity-modulated laser pulses with the electron beam can lead to a customized manipulation of the electron beam, such as a periodic longitudinal density modulation with a submillimeter scale for coherent THz radiation. Positively, it can propel the repetition rate when the peak power requirement of an external laser system is decreased. Thus, we employ a self-modulation method to enhance the initial weak energy modulation induced by the laser directly. In the meanwhile, the use of self-modulation can bypass the limitation that the bandwidth of a long modulator should be smaller than that of the external wideband laser source, which is necessary to shape the intensity envelope flexibly. The one-dimensional analytical description of electron longitudinal dynamic during the self-modulation process is given, which confirms the effective enhancement of the modulation at THz band. Three-dimensional time-dependent simulation results based on the parameters of Hefei light source-II show that the coherent THz radiation pulses with a repetition rate of 10 kHz can be generated. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.27.040701 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:A scheme to generate coherent terahertz (THz) radiation carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) through down-frequency conversion of optical lasers and higher order mode coupling is proposed and analyzed. Based on the laser–electron interaction in the undulator under a linear regime, the scheme utilizes dual-frequency lasers resonating at the harmonics of two consecutive undulators and a dispersion section to impose a THz helical microbunching in the electron beam. By choosing appropriate parameters of lasers and dispersion section, the density modulation can be down-converted to a THz spectral-domain and the central frequency can be extensively tuned together with the helical mode number. Then, the helically microbunched beam can be used as a source of THz OAM radiation in a downstream radiator. We expect that the intense vortex beam in the terahertz band will bring new opportunities for the research of quantum topological materials.

Abstract:We perform a joint measurement of coherent terahertz radiation and high order harmonic generation from gas ionizing by intense two-color laser fields. The relative phase of the superposed two-color field is determined according to the emission time of even high order harmonics. Terahertz radiation maximizes its intensity when this phase delay is locked in 0.8π The deviation from the prediction of four-wave-mixing and directional photoelectron current models originates from the soft re-scattering of the ionized electronic wave packet with the Coulomb potential of the parent ion, which is confirmed by theoretical model and simulations. Thus terahertz radiation supplies an alternative tool to study the electronic dynamics in addition to high-order harmonic generation and above threshold ionization.

Abstract:We report the observation and studies of selective excitation and control of terahertz (THz) coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (cSPr) from a train of sub-picosecond-period electron micro-bunches. The coherence of the radiation from such a train has been demonstrated. The spectrum of cSPr was measured and the selective excitation of the first and the second harmonics was observed, respectively. We also demonstrate experimentally that radiation pulses generated by each electron micro-bunch interfere coherently with the maximum intensity of cSPr observed at the frequency equal to the frequency of the micro-bunch spacing. The experimental results greatly contribute to the understanding of coherent Smith-Purcell radiation from the train of electron micro-bunches, as well as the development of THz diagnostics for accelerators.

Abstract:A survey on the mechanisms of powerful terahertz (THz) radiation from laser plasmas is presented.Firstly, an analytical model is described, showing that a transverse net current formed in a plasma can be converted into THz radiations at the plasma oscillation frequency.This theory is applied to explain THz generation in a gas driven by two-color laser pulses.It is also applied to THz generation in a tenuous plasma driven by a chirped laser pulse, a few-cycle laser pulse, a DC/AC bias electric field.These are well verified by particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating that THz radiations produced in these approaches are nearly single-cycles and linear polarized.In the chirped laser scheme and the few-cycle laser scheme, THz radiations with the peak field strength of tens of MV/cm and the peak power of gigawatt can be achieved with the incident laser intensity less than 10 17 W/cm 2 .

Abstract:With a low emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate realized by a superconducting linac, stimulated excitation of an optical cavity at the terahertz spectrum range has been shown. The electron beam passed through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp resonance structure which indicated wide-band stimulated emission via coherent diffraction radiation was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity.

Abstract:We investigate intense broadband terahertz radiation generation based the interaction of high intensity ultrashort laser with solid plasma. THz pulse with electric field of hundreds of MV/cm are generated using laser with intensity of about 1018 W/cm2. Theoretical model, simulations agree well with experiments, and reveal that the THz radiation is coherent transition radiation by hot electrons produced in laser-plasma interaction. We have studied both planar and nanorod array targets, latter of which efficiently enhance the intensity and directionality of the THz source.

Abstract:The development of efficient terahertz (THz) radiation sources is driven by the scientific and technological applications. To date, as far as the radiation of THz pulses is concerned, the widely used methods are biased semiconductor, electro-optical crystal and air plasma, which are excited separately by femtosecond laser pulses. The mechanisms involved in these THz sources are photo-carrier acceleration, second order nonlinear effect, and plasma oscillations, respectively. Here, we report the generation of coherent THz radiation in the designed ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metallic W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt trilayers on SiO2 substrates, excited separately by ultrafast laser pulses. The transient THz electric field is fully inverted when the magnetization is reversed, which indicates a strong connection between THz radiation and spin order of the sample. We present the THz radiation results of the bilayers, CoFeB/W, CoFeB/Pt and CoFeB/Ta, which are comprised of the trilayer heterostructures used in our experiments. We find that all experimental results are in good agreement with the results from the inversed spin-Hall effect (ISHE) mechanism. Owing to the ISHE, the transient spin current converts into a transient transverse charge current, which launches the THz electromagnetic wave. In our experiments, W or Ta has an opposite spin Hall angle to Pt. Therefore, the amplitude of the THz emission can be increased by a constructive superposition of two charge currents in metallic layers. Our results indicate that the peak-values of the THz radiation covering the 0-2.5 THz range from W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt are stronger than that from 0.5 mm thick ZnTe (110) crystal, under very similar excitation conditions. Finally, we investigate the dependence of peak-to-peak values for two different heterostructures on the pump fluence. The saturations of THz pulse at pump fluences of~0.47 mJ/cm2 and~0.61 mJ/cm2 are found for W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures, respectively. The saturation can be generally attributed to the spin accumulation effect and laser-induced thermal effect. Our results indicate that the spin accumulation effect, by which the density of spin-polarized electrons is restricted in a non-magnetic metallic layer, is slightly less pronounced for Ta/CoFeB/Pt system at high fluences. Our findings provide a new pathway for fabricating the spintronic THz emitter, which is comparable to the conventional nonlinear optical crystals.
Terahertz Radiation from Oscillating Electrons in Laser-Induced Wake Fields.

Abstract:Strong terahertz (1 THz= 10(12) Hz) radiation can be generated by the electron oscillation in fs-laser-induced wake fields. The interaction of a fs-laser pulse with a low-density plasma layer is studied in detail using numerical simulations. The spatial distribution and temporal evolution of terahertz electron current developed in a low-density plasma layer are presented, which enables us to calculate the intensity distribution of THz radiation. It is shown that laser and plasma parameters, such as laser intensity, pulse width, and background plasma density, are of key importance to the process. The optimum condition for wake-field excitation and terahertz emission is discussed upon the simulation results. Radiation peaked at 6.4 THz, with 900 fs duration and 9% bandwidth, can be generated in a plasma of density 5x 10(17) cm(-3) . It turns out that the maximum radiation intensity scales as n(3)(0) a(4)(0) when wake field is resonantly excited, where n(0) and a(0) are, respectively, the plasma density and the normalized field amplitude of the laser pulse.

Abstract:We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.

Abstract:In this paper, an electron-beam-driven enhanced terahertz (THz) coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) from the interaction between cylindrical surface wave and annular electron beam within a cylindrical quasi-optical cavity is presented. The results show that the quasi-optical cavity plays a very important role in the coherent SPR resonance and energy feedback which leads to an enhanced coherent SPR with relatively high efficiency and low current density. Moreover, it is found that the radiated field intensity and field energy of the coherent SPR with the quasi-optical cavity has been improved five times and almost one order of magnitude, respectively, compared with those without the cavity. This system provides an alternative way for high-performance THz sources.

Abstract:In this article, the preliminary studies of coherent stimulated terahertz radiation from intense, subnanosecond electron beam are presented. The mechanism of terahertz pulse generation is associated with self‐bunching of the beam and slippage of the wave over the whole electron flow. This so‐called Cherenkov superradiance (SR) was used to propose a compact terahertz generator with high peak power. A large cross section (overmoded), slow wave structure was designed to support the high power handling capability, and the mode competition was avoided by operating the device in the surface wave status. With 2.5D particle‐in‐cell simulation, we investigated the “hot” characteristics of the proposed superradiant terahertz generator and found that the SR peak power could be further increased by optimizing the amplitude profile of electron pulse. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
