Abstract:A low-cost electrically processed OCDMA system based on spatial coding and subcarrier multiplexing is proposed. The simulation shows that at least 10 simultaneous users can be supported in a 16-code OCDMA system with 40-dB OSNR.

Abstract:The experiment of optical code division multiple(OCDMA) technology with active 3 senders and 3 receivers is reported.Design method and some parameters of the OCDMA system are presented,the scheme and experiment results are analyzed in detail,it is shown that OCDMA system with 3 pairs users,2.5 Gchip/s,and 20 km fiber transmission is successfully experimented by optical delay line,the multiple users interference(MUI) effects highly on the bit error rate(BER) performance of OCDMA system is also clarified.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel multi-layer secure communication system that bases 2D-OCDMA technology to enhance the security and number of users of the system. The system innovatively combines RSA encryption, polarization multiplexing, and address coding techniques to protect and transmit the data. At the transmitting end, the data is encrypted by algorithm and then encoded by address code. The encoded optical data is split into two orthogonal polarization states and sent over the same channel. At the receiving end, only the optical signals in the matching polarization state can be retrieved by the polarizer with the right angle. The retrieved data is then decoded by the address code and decrypted by the algorithm to recover the original data. This system achieves multi-layer security and capacity enhancement by processing the information at different layers. The feasibility of the system is demonstrated by joint experimental simulation using Java programming language and Optisystem simulation software. In this paper, low BER transmission of 4 code words for 8 users 50 km 1Gbit/s is realized using optical orthogonal codes (OOC) with BER around 10 −30 . It realizes the enhancement of 4-user to 8-user without affecting the transmission effect.

Abstract:A simple code switching scheme for security enhancement of an optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) communication system is proposed. The scheme avoids the replacement of all the encoders and decoders in the system and all users' codes are changed by only tuning the center wavelength of the laser source. Each en/decoder contains multiple codes which are nonoverlapping in the spectrum. The scheme is demonstrated in a proof-of-principle transmission experiment. There are three codes on the encoder and decoder pairs, one 2-D code and two 1-D bipolar gold codes with chip number of 63 and 127, respectively. All three codes are decoded successfully after 12.7-km single-mode fiber link.

Abstract:The proposed optical code-division multiple access(OCDMA) add-drop multiplexer(ADM) is based on arrayed waveguide gratings(AWG) and 2-D time-wavelength code.It drops several code channels simultaneously without disturbing the remaining code channels.The proposed ADM can also add several code channels simulataneously.Furthermore,with using the specific code,such as Prime/OOC,and a small number of AWGs,it is achieved to encode many users simultaneously to make the system compact.Simulation results show the proposed ADM possesses the required functions,according to the success of drop/add two from the 4-user network simultaneously.

Abstract:Orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) is a new multi-carrier scheme based on chirp spread spectrum (CSS) recently introduced and shown to be more robust to interference. In this paper, we propose a novel OCDM system based on index modulation (IM). In this scheme, information is conveyed not only by M-ary signal constellation in classic OCDM, but also by subchirp indices activated in accordance with the input bitstream. We design a receiver structure based on single-tap frequency domain equalization (FDE) and maximum likelihood (ML) detection. To address the exponential complexity growth caused by ML detection, we also propose a novel reduced-complexity maximum likelihood (RC-ML) detector. The new detector offers a comparable BER performance to the ML one with a substantially reduced complexity. A theoretical peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance analysis of the new scheme is given to illustrate the advantages of combining OCDM with IM. We provide an extensive performance analysis of the new scheme in terms of bit error rate (BER), diversity gain, and minimum Euclidean distance (MED). Simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the PAPR and BER performances of the proposed scheme are significantly better than those of the OCDM scheme due to the information bits carried by the OCDM subchirp indices. Moreover, our numerical results verify the robustness of the system in the presence of carrier frequency offsets (CFO).

Abstract:In this study, a bipolar optical code-division multiple-access (Bi-OCDMA) technique based on spectral amplitude coding (SAC) was proposed by using a phase modulator to realize polarization coding through a free-space optical (FSO) channel. Various types of noise, such as amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, thermal noise, and shot noise, were included in the simulation to approach the real application. The first simulation, utilizing a modified M-sequence as signature code, demonstrated that the proposed Bi-OCDMA system could be implemented in FSO communication. The proposed Bi-OCDMA scheme improves the transmission rate and power efficiency compared with the previous scheme. The structure of the proposed system alleviates multiple-access interference (MAI) with a simple and cost-effective design. The second simulation observed the performance of the proposed Bi-OCDMA for two users with several well-known SAC codes, i.e., multi-diagonal (MD) code, modified quadratic congruence (MQC) code, modified maximum length sequence (M-sequence) code, and Walsh–Hadamard code, in extreme weather conditions, both for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and turbulence-induced fading channel. The simulation results indicated that the Walsh–Hadamard code has superior performance compared to other codes. The results show the MD code can be implemented in the proposed Bi-OCDMA scheme for a medium-distance FSO.

Abstract:Optical code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) is receiving increasing attention due to its potential for enhanced information security, simplified and decentralized network control, and increased flexibility in the granularity of bandwidth that can be provisioned. In O-CDMA, different users whose signals may be overlapped both in time and frequency share a common communications medium; multipleaccess is achieved by assigning different, minimally interfering code sequences to different CDMA transmitters. In many O-CDMA approaches, input ultrashort pulses are time-spread during the encoding process into lower intensity noise-like signals [1-2]. In the receiver, data corresponding to a desired user is separated from multi-access interference via a matched filtering (decoding) operation, in which properly decoded signals are converted back to the original pulse-like signals, while improperly decoded signals remain low-intensity noise-like temporally broad waveforms. Since the energy in properly and improperly decoded signals is similar, and since the temporal duration of even improperly decoded signals is on the order of the bit period or below, both properly and improperly decoded signals will appear identical to an electronic receiver band-limited to the data rate. Consequently either very fast electronics or a nonlinear optical intensity discriminator play a critical role in separating properly decoded short pulses from improperly decoded multi-access interference.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a subcarrier-index modulation-based asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SACO-OFDM) scheme for optical wireless communication (OWC) systems, which benefits from the subcarrier-index modulation (SIM) and asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) techniques. SACO-OFDM conveys additional information via the subcarrier indexing, and the error rate of the bit transmitted by the subcarrier indexing is much lower than that of the conventional M-ary modulation scheme. On the other hand, as the signal constellation in M-ary modulation is relieved, SACO-OFDM has simple transceiver structure and low detection complexity. Moreover, considering the spectral, an enhanced SACO-OFDM (ESACO-OFDM) using even subcarriers is proposed. In this technique, the odd subcarriers are activated for SACO-OFDM, and the imaginary part of even subcarriers are activated for pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT). Clearly, ESACO-OFDM achieves better spectral efficiency than the conventional optical OFDM, since all subcarriers are used for data transmission. Simulation results verify the significant bit error rate (BER) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) improvement by the proposed ESACO-OFDM, especially for the medium-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.

Abstract:The optical code-division multiple access(OCDMA) based on fiber Bragg gratings(FBG) and two-dimensional wavelength-time code is studied theoretically and experimentally.A novel OCDMA add-drop multiplexer is introduced to drop a code channel without disturbing the rest code channels.The proposed add-drop multiplexer is cost-effective,and the channel-dropping scheme is verified in a simulation.

Abstract:Orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) is a new multi-carrier scheme that has been emerging as a new candidate for 6G waveform taking advantage of the unique features of the chirp spread spectrum that makes it immune to intersymbol interference raised due to delay spread. However, a thorough analysis of OCDM under doubly-dispersive channels has not been conducted yet to verify its robustness against Doppler spread as well. In this paper, we investigate the input-output relationship of an OCDM system under doubly-selective channel, where we demonstrate that the circular convolution property of OCDM partially holds even under Doppler spread. Building on previous results, we show the difficulties and problems associated with estimating and equalizing the channel at the receiver side in conventional OCDM systems, especially in case of having fractional delay and Doppler shifts. Then, we propose a new OCDM transceiver by adding fast Fourier transform (FFT) and windowing blocks to ensure channel tap separability and reduce the effect of fractional Doppler shift, respectively. Accordingly, a new channel estimation scheme is developed for the proposed OCDM system. The numerical and simulation results validate the advantages of the proposed OCDM system performance under doubly-dispersive channels over the conventional where the proposed leverages a bit-error-rate (BER) gain in perfect channel state information (CSI) of 2 dB and 3 dB for minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and message passing (MP) equalizers, respectively, and show that it holds great promise as an emerging radio access technology for 6G wireless systems.

Affine OCDM: Designing Chirp-based Multicarrier System with Maximum Diversity

Abstract:This work considers the problem of maximizing multipath diversity and coding gains of orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM)-based systems. We define and study an Affine OCDM (A-OCDM) system in which a chirp parameter is adapted based on block size to enable maximum diversity offered by frequency selective channels. Unlike linear constellation precoded (LCP)-OCDM, our proposed system effectively reduces implementation complexity while harnessing the full diversity potential offered by frequency-selective channels. Additionally, we explore and characterize the upper bounds on coding gains and diversity offered by linear equalizers (LEs). To further reduce the complexity of receive equalization, we propose a subchirp grouping method to multiplex chirp systems into independent sub-blocks. Corroborating simulations are presented to verify the theoretical results and the proposed A-OCDM system is shown to exhibit similar resilience to interference, while enjoying improved error performance, compared to OCDM.

Abstract:A two-user OCDMA system based on superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) encoder/decoder with equivalent phase shift is demonstrated. Each user can be decoded independently, and clear eye diagrams is achieved. In single user scenario, the system bit-error-rate (BER) curve is measured. At 10-9 BER level, a 0.7 dB power penalty is observed and attributed to the non-ideal encoding/decoding process. Experiment results prove that multi-user OCDMA system can be built based on SSFBG en/decoder with equivalent phase shift.

Abstract:The base-band bipolar optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) system is introduced, with transform of unipolar-bipolar and bipolar-unipolar, transmission of signal with bipolar codes is realized through unipolar medium. Gold sequence and m sequence in OCDMA system, and channel effect on the performance of OCDMA system are studied here. The simulation results demonstrate that Gold sequence and m sequence are adapted to bipolar OCDMA system according to the performance of the auto/cross-correlation, but Gold sequence in bipolar OCDMA system is better than m sequence. When the number of users is 20, the bit error rate (BER) is 10 -9 for Gold sequence, and about 10 -7 for m sequence. Channel model significantly influences the performance of the OCDMA system (～20 dB).

Abstract:A highly spectral-efficient transmission system based on optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) technique is investigated. To meet the rapid increase in the demand of data bandwidth, spectral efficiency is becoming a key factor in optical transport systems. Several modulation formats along with the optical receiver design have been proposed to upgrade the spectral efficiency. OCDM is one of the promising techniques for this purpose. OCDM is the other class of multiplexing technique than optical time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). OCDM provides unique features such as asynchronous transmission, secure communication, soft capacity on demand, and high degree of scalability. In this paper, we apply OCDM technique to the highly spectral-efficient transmission system by quaternary phase-shift keying optical encoding/decoding along with ultrafast optical time-gating and optical hard thresholding. As a result, a transmission of 6.4 Tbit/s OCDM/WDM (4 OCDM $\times {\hbox{ 40 WDM }}\times {\hbox{ 40 Gbit/s}}$) using only C-band wavelength region is experimentally demonstrated with 1.6-bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Optical Codes Division Multiple Access is a multiplexing approach in which the transmitter a distinguishable optical code is assigned to each user in the communication channel. OCDMA is designed for radio frequency (RF) communication systems and it is a variation of the CDMA system. Subsequently, to develop all OCDMA communication systems, the success of CDMA in wireless networks, as well as the full benefits of fibre optics, such as good security, extremely high bandwidth, low attenuation, and long-haul transmission. In this research Spectral Amplitude Coding-Optical Code Division Multiple Access is proposed. Initially, Modified Double Weight and Zero Cross-Correlation (MDW-ZCC) is proposed in this research to construct the code design of SAC-OCDMA, it produces the best possible autocorrelation and cross-correlation values. Subsequently, a combined Single Photodiode (SPD) and Direct detection technique is introduced to decode the transmitter information and it reduces the noise. Accordingly, a Gaussian approximation technique is presented to estimate the Bit error rate from the eye diagram of BER and Q-factor. Accordingly, the proposed method is simulated using Python software. The performance metrics are Q-factor, and bit error rate and the proposed method is compared with the existing Three-Dimensional Single Weight Zero Cross-Correlation (3D-SWZCC) Code, Two Dimensional Spectral/Spatial Cyclic Shift (2D-SSCS), and Permutation Matrix Zero Cross-Correlation (PM-ZCC) Code. Subsequently, these results exhibit that the proposed method produces the best performance than the other methods and it estimates the BER. Consequently, future work is based on the study of 3D codes with m-sequence code in the spectral/time/spatial OCDMA domain. The approach has elegantly integrated the design of an encoder and a decoder, allowing the system to efficiently create code in 3D bipolar mode, respectively.

Abstract:A secure orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) mode division multiplexed (MDM) short-reach optical communication based on time-frequency joint perturbation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the discrete Fresnel transform (DFnT) was used to realize the digital realization of OCDM, and then the Lorenz chaos model and Logistic chaos model were combined to realize the time-frequency perturbation of the orthogonal chirped subcarriers and chirped symbols. The digital up-conversion (DUC) was used to transform the OCDM signal and transmit it in the MDM short-reach optical communication system. The chirped signal has good pulse compression and spread spectrum capability, the maximum chirped spread spectrum can be achieved by using OCDM based on DFnT. The time-frequency joint perturbation of the double chaos model can achieve a large keyspace of $1{\bf } \times {\bf }{10^{144}}$ and improve the security of information transmission. DUC technology can transform OCDM signal from complex to a real number, which can meet the transmission requirements of the MDM IM/DD system and increase the transmission spectrum efficiency. Through experiments, 32Gb /s OCDM encrypted signal transmission is realized across 5km few-mode fiber, the OCDM has a maximum receiver sensitivity gain of 1.48 dB compared with OFDM at $1{\bf } \times {\bf }{10^{ - 2}}$ bit error rate. The results show that the proposed secure OCDM-MDM short-reach optical communication scheme based on time-frequency joint perturbation has good anti-interference and security performance, as well as a wide range of applications in the future short-reach optical communication.
Two-Dimensional CWH-M Matrices Coding in Spatial/Frequency OCDMA Networks

Abstract:A new tow-dimensional optical code with multiple-weight-per-row property and with cyclic relationship between codeword and its complement. The coding scheme and the spatial/frequency system configure is realized. The performance of the proposed system is analyzed. The theoretical analyse shows that, with this system, MAI can be perfectly cancelled and theoretically achieve quasiorthogonality between OCDMA users. The emulational result shows that the system performance can be improved compared to one-dimensional system and the conventional systems employing simple on-off keying.

Abstract:Recent results have shown that the recently proposed Orthogonal Chirp Division Multiplexing (OCDM) system outperforms OFDM under frequency-selective channels in single-input single-output case. In this work, we investigate the viability of OCDM in a multiple-input multiple-output case with different space time coding techniques. In particular, we consider: Alamouti, cyclic delay diversity (CDD) and Alamouti with CDD (ACDD) techniques. The contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we provide a comprehensive model for ACDD, which for the best of the authors' knowledge is not available in the literature. Secondly, we evaluate this model in a vehicular communication scenario based on ITS-G5 standard, and we show that OCDM outperforms OFDM in terms of frame error rate performance.
