Clinical and histopathological analysis of six cases of ientigo maligna melanoma

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the clinical and histopathological characters of lentigo maligna melanoma. Methods: Six cases of lentigo maligna melanoma diagnosed in our department were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Four cases were developed at the old age and one of them had two lesions, two cases developed at the young age. All the lesions were black macules with irregular edges and uneven color, and one patient had ulceration on the lesion. Histological examination showed all lesions were melanoma in situ except one case an invasive melanoma. The melanoma in situ presented as proliferations of unevenly distributed melanocytes with prominent pleomorphism. Small nests could be formed at its fully developed stage. The two lesions developed at the young age showed the same histopathological characters compared with the lesions developed at the old age, except no basophilic degeneration of collagen found. Immunohistochemistry results showed the neoplasm cells stained positive for S100 and Melan-A in all cases. Conclusion: Lentigo maligna melanoma is a subtype of melanoma commonly found on the facial region of elderly patient, but middle aged people is not spared. Histopathologically it can be melanoma in situ or invasive melanoma.
