Abstract:Zinc-Aluminum composite coating on AZ91D alloy was successfully obtained by using vacuum evaporation technique and further kept warm for 2 h under the constant load of 32 MPa at 400°C in the atmosphere. The surface morphology, the structure and the phase component of the coating were examined by OM, SEM, EDS and XRD. The microhardness and corrosion resistance of the AZ91D alloy coating were measured as well. The results showed that a homogeneous and dense Zn-Al composite coating was bonded tightly with the AZ91D alloy matrix by forming a transition layer between them. Based on binary phase diagram and the results of masked points by EDS analysis, the structure of eutectic phase in the Mg/Zn interface was Mg2Zn11 or MgZn2, and the structure of eutectic phase in the Al/Zn interface was Al2Zn3; the microhardness of the hot-pressing-treated coating was up to 1360~1430 MPa, 1.7 to 2.4 times relative to that of the matrix. After immersing in 3.5% NaCl neutral solution for 72 h, the significant breakdown was not found on the coating of hot-pressing-treated sample, the island microstructure still existed and only slight surface black pitting occurred on the surface of the coated sample; but the coating of no hot-pressing-treated coating sample was peeled off flakily, and could not protect the exposed bright white matrix; simultaneously, the surface of AZ91D sample was greatly damaged, the flocculent corrosion product Mg(OH)2 appeared in flaky and continuous corrosion pits was a loose construction and did not have a protective effect to the matrix, so AZ91D alloy of hot-pressing-treated coating showed a significantly improvement of corrosion resistance.
