Abstract:Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is an aquatic plant that can be used to recover nutrients from wastewaters. Duckweed grows very fast and can double its biomass within 16 h to four days. The grown duckweed can be a good resource of proteins and utilized for animal feed production. Duckweed production rate growing on wastewaters can be 15-30 g (dry weight)/m2·d and the protein content in dry duckweed can be as high as 30%-45%. Wastewater treatment using duckweed has attracted much attention as an alternative technology to recover nutrients from wastewater and, at the same time, generate revenue through the production of value-added products from harvesedt duckweed plants. Duckweed-based wastewater treatment systems have been extensively studied. The advantages of these systems include high removal rates of nitrogen and phosphorus, and great potential of using duckweed biomass as protein source for animal feed as well as starch source for the production of fuel ethanol.
