Abstract:The impact of group delay ripples of chirped fiber gratings (CFG) on the performance of optical beamforming networks (OBFN) is investigated. The paper theoretically analyzes the quantified relations among the amplitude and period of CFG, the optical angle frequency interval at the inter-element arrays and the beampointing shift. The wavelength instability of the optical source is also investigated. This instability-induced phase jitter of RF signal has been verified experimentally. The theoretical models are proposed to analyze the performance of CFG-based OBFN systems.

Abstract:In order to improve monotonously variational group delay characteristic in the conventional one-dimensional photonic crystals(PCs),an improved PCs structure was presented.The properties of rapid phase shift for the mismatch induced by the overlaps of different reflective bands inside PCs were utilized in the structure,and the relationship between phase shift and group delay was used,and thickness-tapered period structures were added at the two ends of the periodical PCs.The property of the reflective band was investigated inside the structure,and distribution of corresponding group delay was studied.Group delay properties between two thickness-tapered structures including high refractive index material and low refractive index material were compared and analyzed.The results indicate that compared with traditional Bragg mirrors,the structure design is more free and the structure can achieve multichannel group delay,realize large and linear dispersion at multiwave of light beams,and have better filtering effect and more superiorities in optical demultiplexer system.

Abstract:In this study, we designed and fabricated a cable accommodating 4-core and 7-core multicore fibers (MCFs). Fiber characteristics including attenuation, dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) during the cabling procedure were measured and analyzed. We observed a significant degradation in PMD for MCFs, particularly for those outer cores proximate to the cladding. Thus it requires longer taps of MIMO equalizers to sufficiently equalize at the receiver for reliable communications at the subsea distance. To assess the PMD impact on outage performance with limitations of MIMO equalizers’ taps, we developed a C-band 8000-km submarine transmission model which was calibrated with measured parameters during cabling, for qualifying 4- and 7-core MCFs in practical use. Simulations performed on the calibrated model could predict the outage performance for ensuring the communication reliability. More than 2-dB SNR margin is required to prevent the PMD-induced outage with using 300-taps MIMO equalizer at the receiver. Based on these comprehensive tests and simulations, we emphasize the importance of carefully managing PMD and ensuring adequate system SNR margins during the practical cabling and deployment of optical MCFs submarine cables.

Abstract:The dispersion effects of fiber gratings are studied for phased-array antennas,which are fed by the optical delay-line array based on a number of discrete fiber gratings.The results indicate that the time delay performance is affected greatly by the dispersion induced by the fiber gratings,even if single-sideband modulation scheme is employed.The dispersion effects can be effectively reduced by choosing a proper spacing between the array elements and an increased fiber difference of the adjacent channel.

Abstract:We realize an ultra-stable microwave signal distribution system based on an optical phase-locked loop. The transmission delay jitter is accurately compensated with a piezoelectric fiber stretcher (PFS). For further eliminating the additional delay jitter originated from the polarization changes during the PFS stretching, we propose an orthogonal-polarized round-trip PFS structure. The transmission delay jitter of 24 GHz signals distributed to multiple remote ends using the proposed and the traditional PFS scheme are carefully compared and quantitively analyzed under various fiber types and lengths. With the proposed PFS structure, the relative delay jitter of two transmitted signals are decreased from 291.4 fs to merely 17.7 fs even via 200 m polarization maintaining fiber with considerable polarization mode dispersion, showing its remarkable superiority. This microwave signal distribution system can find its versatile applications in radio astronomy where multiple ultra-high relative stable microwave signals are highly desired in different locations.

Time delay ripples apart from ideal time delay exist in single optical true time delay link and delay array based OBFN, but counteract between WDM links. Thus, OBFN is recommended to use WDM architecture.

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-group beamforming system based on an integrated optical true time delay line (OTTDL) chip is presented in this paper. Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) can be realized by this system. This system operating at 10.2 GHz can achieve no-distortion beam scanning, and three directions (0°, ±90°) are shown in the paper. Besides, the speed of beam scanning is measured as 1.2 kHz.

Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers poses a major challenge for maintaining the fidelity of quantum states for quantum communications. In this work, a comprehensive model linking the probability of quantum measurement errors (infidelity) to PMD is developed and validated by experimental measurements of differential group delay and quantum bit error rate (QBER). Our research proposes effective methods to mitigate PMD effects for broadband entangled photons and evaluates the impact of higher-order PMD effects. The model provides an experimentally verified framework for the optimization of commercial quantum key distribution systems in deployed fiber optic lines.

Abstract:A novel optical beamforming network scheme based on broadband optical source and Chirped Fiber Grating as true-time-delay module is proposed in the paper. The principle of this scheme is illustrated by theoretical analysis and the feasibility is validated by experiment. In experiment, Er-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) is used as broad band optical source, chirped fiber grating as dispersive element is used for time delay unit, and tunable optical filter is used to choose operation wavelength. In 9.25~10.25 GHz microwave band, optical true time delay performance is measured and results shows that the delay time consistency and the ratio of the RF signal to its noise (SNR) meet the practical demands, and such system has many potentials in optical complexity, cost, tune speed and the system expansibility.

Abstract:We investigate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) impairments in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) signals with optical polarization demultiplexing and direct detection. We find that the time alignment between the bits in the two polarizations has a significant impact on the PMD impairments, and PMD impairments also depend on the bandwidth of PDM signals, whereas PDL impairments have little dependence on the relative time alignment between the two polarizations and the signal bandwidth. We show that with a proper configuration of the polarization demultiplexing, the PDL-induced crosstalk between the two polarizations can be completely eliminated. The combined effects of PMD and PDL are also studied, and we find that, in the presence of concatenated PMD and PDL, the impairment from one effect does not enhance that from the other. Abstract:We firstly propose an approach to compensate the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) effectively in optical true time delay (TTD) system composed of a Faraday Rotation Mirror (FRM), a normal 3-port circular. The TTD system can preserve an arbitrary input state of polarization regardless of any external perturbations, and is complete free from polarization effects. We demonstrate experimentally the polarization-stability of the TTD system and discuss the RF correspond of the TTD system.

Abstract:>Polarization dependent loss (PDL) has been recognized as a critical issue because various inline optical components may have nonnegligible PDL effect that interacts with polarization mode dispersion (PMD). We investigated the impact of PMD-PDL interaction on degree of polarization (DOP), which is the most commonly used feedback signal in PMD compensation. The simulation results of a 40-Gb/s NRZ code optical transmission system show that the maximum PMD increases from approximately 40 ps to more than 45 ps, while minimum DOP declines from approximately 0.6 to approximately 0.2. The interaction of PMD and PDL also induces residual PMD underestimation of 5-8 ps, which causes degradation of PMD compensation performance.

Abstract:We propose a novel dispersion-based optical beamforming network scheme employing phase modulation and direct detection. Optical phase modulators have the advantages of simple-structure, low loss and absence of bias. Dispersion-induced phase-to-intensity conversion is utilized to facilitate direct detection. A structure of wideband dispersive device (WDD) cascaded with periodic dispersive device (PDD) is introduced to enhance the system flexibility, so that the delay adjustability and RF response can be properly designed respectively by choosing appropriate dispersions of the WDD and PDD. A concept-proof system with a wideband chirped fiber grating (CFG) as the WDD and two multiband CFGs (MCFG1 and MCFG2) as the PDD separately is built to demonstrate the basic idea. The delay tuning range is 0–1.8ns with increment of 164.2ps. The passband center is 30GHz for MCFG1 and 20GHz for MCFG2, and the fractional bandwidth is 51.8%. The shot-noise-limited spurious-free dynamic range is also analyzed and measured to be 105.7dB⋅Hz2/3 when the average photocurrent is 2.7mA.

Abstract:Photonic true time delay (TTD) systems based on optical dispersive devices suffer from RF power degradation induced by dispersion. When the dispersion value is 100 ps/nm, the -3 dB bandwidth are limited to 17.6 GHz and 4.4 GHz for systems using lasers and broadband light sources, respectively. A multichannel chirped fiber grating is used to mitigate the RF power degradation in a dispersion-based TTD link for the first time. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the degradation can be completely eliminated by using this method.

Abstract:We theoretically extend the concept of proposed Jones-space optical field recovery to the all-order polarization mode dispersion model for short-reach direct detection optical fiber communications. Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is becoming major system impairment in high speed and long distance optical fiber transmission systems. As the bit rate climbs from 10 to 40Gb/s per channel and beyond, optical pulses are increasingly distorted by 1(st) and higher order PMD. We report on the experimental mitigation of pulse distortion due to 1(st) and higher order PMD effect based on one tunable differential group delay (DGD) element, which is a compact concatenation via six magneto-optic polarization rotators (Faraday rotators) of six YVO4 birefringence crystals whose lengths decrease in a binary power series. Two different experiments are carried out, with and without an electric polarization controller set before the tunable DGD element. Optical pulses with width of 41ps are broadened and distorted by the PMD emulator which generates 1(st) and 2(nd) order PMD with mean magnitude of 30.28 ps and 483.31 ps(2), respectively, and then reshaped by the compensation device. Degree of polarization (DOP) is used as the feedback signal, which is significantly increased from around 0.15 to around 0.85. The experiment results show that pulse distortion due to 1(st) and higher order PMD is successfully mitigated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 1×8 binary tree optical beamforming network (OBFN) chip for a microwave photonic phased array antenna. The OBFN is formed by cascading multiple microring resonators (MRRs) working at the anti-resonant wavelengths. The binary tree topology reduces the MRR amount by reusing the MRRs in the preceding stage, and the anti-resonant MRRs realize continuous delay tuning with a reduced in-band delay fluctuation. The delay adjustment is achieved by digitally tuned MRRs and one continuously tuned MRR in each stage with an improved operating bandwidth. The random initial states of the MRRs are calibrated to produce a flat delay response. Experimental results show that the maximum delay is 560 ps. The beamforming performance of the OBFN is evaluated in 20 ps and 45 ps delay increments. In an 8-GHz operating bandwidth, the maximum delay fluctuation is less than 7.6 ps. The capability of our delay lines to suppress the delay ripple encountered in conventional on-resonance delay lines opens exciting opportunities for the development of compact integrated broadband OBFNs demanded in broadband microwave phased array antennas.

Abstract:The fiber optic true delay technique can help to realize broadband and wide-angle scan in phased array antenna.Based on existing optical delay line(ODL) structures,it's implemented a new switching structure of ODL using semiconductor optical amplifiers(SOA) and Faraday rotation mirrors(FRM).This structure has the advantages of fast tunability,high delay precision,stable output power,and polarization independence.The delay of this structure can be controlled at a precision of 1 ps with error of less than 0.1 ps.
