Abstract:Membrane fouling is one of the main concerns in membrane process. Many endeavors have been made while accurate control of micromorphological characteristics of foulants is still lacking. In this study, the influence of electrocoagulation pretreatment on membrane fouling was investigated via determination and characterization of the transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) formed by bridging of aluminum ions. Results showed that the fouling propensity increased and subsequently decreased with the rise in current density. Staining of TEP revealed that, at low current density, the TEP resulting from few aluminum ions was small and amorphous, leading to the development of a dense fouling layer during filtration. Conversely, with the increase in current density, abundant aluminum ions induced more alginate aggregation, resulting in the larger and structurally more stable TEP, which developed fouling layers with porous structure. The fouling ability of foulants decreased by a factor of 5.29 after pretreatment at 3 mA/cm 2 electrocoagulation. This study revealed that it was not the quantity but the quality of foulant that determined the fouling severity. This study provides evidence that application of appropriate electrocoagulation pretreatment reduces the fouling ability of organic foulants and offers notable advantages in mitigating membrane fouling.
